Information Science (Data Analytics) MSc ▪ Our teaching is linked to what you want to learn and also to what you need to learn in order to achieve greater success in information science. ▪ You will cover topics such as how to design and manipulate databases with relational algebra and SQL.

Information Science (Data Analytics) MSc Ways to Study 1 year, full-time 2 years, full-time (with advanced practice in second year) In the year 2, for one semester, you will undertake an Advanced Practice placement**, or join a research group.** ▪ Advanced practice placement** - the opportunity to spend three months working full-time to gain allimportant work experience and employability skills. We endeavour to help students to source opportunities and to perfect their CV, but ultimately the onus is on you to secure a placement through a competitive application process, or a group of advanced practice students will work with a client to deliver an outcome.. ▪ Research** – the opportunity to be assigned to our Computer Science and Informatics Research Group. There is every possibility that you may contribute to published research and therefore you may be named as part of the research team - a great start to a research career.

Information Science (Data Analytics) MSc Teaching 1 year, full-time ▪ You study for 180 credits. ▪ Our teaching is linked to what you want to learn and also to what you need to learn in order to achieve greater success in information science. ▪ There is an emphasis on learning by doing; coursework will include projects, portfolios of work, reports and presentations as well as essays. All this helps you to make sense of the subject, getting a clear understanding of important concepts and theories. ▪ Our long established relationship with employers ensures that you receive the most relevant and up-to-date knowledge to bring innovation, relevance, ethical sensitivity and currency to all you do. ▪ Modules are delivered as a combination of lectures, seminars and workshops**. Each module has 4 hours contact time per week** with additional hours spent on self study. ** Subject to availability and government guidance during Covid-19.


Information Science (Data Analytics) MSc Assessment ▪ Assessments reflect professional practice and include both formative and summative assessments. ▪ Formative assessments will be used to guide your progress and reinforce your learning. and you can expect both your tutors and your peers to provide useful comments and feedback.

▪ Summative assessments which contribute to your final grade will be undertaken either individually or as a group and will be submitted as either as essays, portfolios of work, presentations, reports or project work. ▪ The dissertation allows you to identify a topic of specific interest to you within the context of Information Science. You investigate the topic in depth and apply appropriate research methods to that investigation; during this period you will be allocated an academic supervisor to support preparation and presentation of your dissertation. You will work independently with the assistance of the supervisor, to carry out all stages in the research process.


Information Science (Library Management) MSc ▪ A distance learning course that gives the flexibility to combine existing job, or other commitments, with a Masters-level qualification in the field of library management. ▪ This course is designed equally for those who are already information professionals in libraries and those who are looking to break into the sector for the first time. ▪ Accredited by the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP) to assure students that programmes provide an excellent preparation for professional practice. ▪ This accreditation makes our courses stand out and enhances their credibility and currency among employers, and is also crucial for progressing to Chartership status once qualified.

Information Science (Library Management) MSc Teaching 2 years, Distance Learning ▪ You study for 180 credits. ▪ There is an emphasis on learning by doing. This helps you to make sense of the subject, getting a clear understanding of important concepts and theories. ▪ Northumbria uses a range of technologies to enhance your learning, with tools including webbased self-guided exercises, online tests with feedback, videos and tutorials. ▪ As a Distance Learning student you will learn using online learning materials, in addition to discussion boards and online activities. This is facilitated by our University eLearning Portal which has been successfully delivering distance learning provision for a number of years. It is expected that you will draw heavily on your own working experience to contextualise the theory learnt. You are encouraged throughout your programme to reflect critically on the theories and practice of information science.

Our Staff ▪ Our teaching staff include cutting-edge researchers whose specialisms overlap with the content of this course, helping ensure that teaching is right up-to-date. Specialisms include big data, data mining, decision-making, digital literacy, information behaviour, information retrieval systems, recommender systems, and the link between information science and cognitive psychology. • You will supported in your studies by the programme leader, Dr Naveed Anwar as well as module tutors and a guidance tutor who will be assigned to you on your arrival. Your guidance tutor will meet with you regularly to discuss your progress.


Research Rich Learning â–Ş We are living in a digital age where all of our lives are impacted and challenged by digital technologies and information sciences, from cyber security and AI, to social media, games and visual effects, to digital libraries, archives and records.

â–Ş Data and information form the lifeblood of modern society. The Information Management and Data Analytics (IMDA) research group take a multidisciplinary and multidimensional approach to the study of data and information to explore the way they are created, used and managed in specific personal and organisational contexts. â–Ş In the last Research Excellence Assessment (REA) the impact of our research was achieved 3* (internationally excellent) status.


Change Direction ▪ You probably chose your undergraduate degree when you were 17 years old. Have you changed since then? Have your career aspirations changed too? ▪ The hard work you put into your first degree has helped you develop a vast range of valuable skills. By combining them with a Masters in a completely new subject, you can open the door to a career that suits who you are today. ▪ Students can transfer to information sciences from various background including computer sciences students who prefer to do a more analytical job after graduation or social science students who prefer to be equipped with more solid computing knowledge. ▪ Students from other non-computing backgrounds who have many years of industrial experiences in the data analytics and IT industry might find this programme will improve their skills.


Entry Requirements ▪ Applicants should normally have a minimum of a 2:2 honours degree in any subject. Other subject qualifications, equivalent professional qualifications and/or relevant work experience will be considered on an individual basis. ▪ International qualifications - if you have studied a non-UK qualification, you can see how your qualifications compare to the standard entry criteria, by selecting the country that you received the qualification in from our country pages at www.northumbria.ac.uk/yourcountry. ▪ English language requirements - International applicants are required to have a minimum overall IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5 with 5.5 in each component (or approved equivalent*). * The university accepts many UK and International Qualifications in place of IELTS.
