Why International Development MSc at Northumbria? • Develop the specialist skills and knowledge required to work in a range of careers across the international development sector. • The course will equip you with a critical and up-to-date understanding of the field of international development. • You will engage with contemporary debates on the issues that are currently defining the sector, whilst critically examining key international development policies, theories, strategies and practices. • You will also analyse the operation of development organisations, and the ways in which individuals and communities experience and challenge poverty and marginalisation. • You will be part of the Centre for International Development; a vibrant, multidisciplinary virtual research centre that provides an engaging, supportive and research-rich learning environment.

Teaching and Assessment Teaching • Courses are split into modules worth 30 or 60 credits. • Lectures (large group teaching), seminars (small group discussions), workshops (interactive, practical sessions) and dissertations (large scale research project). You will have access to our e-Learning platform Blackboard, where you can rewatch all Panopto-recorded lectures and read workshop presentation slides at your own pace. • Guest Lectures and Seminars. You will also have the opportunity to engage with development organisations, recent examples include; Traidcraft, Team Kenya, and COCO, as well as development NGOs working in India and Latin America. Assessment • The assessment methods utilised on this course have been specifically developed to prepare you for employment, and incorporate the writing of funding bids, policy briefs, and academic poster presentations. Traditional essays and a dissertation also form part of the assessment process. If you choose to do a placement, you will have the opportunity to develop your own real-world research project together with a development organisation.


Our Staff • Each member of our team boasts their own individual specialisms, in subjects such as environmental governance and development; natural resource conflicts, including anti-mining activism; public engagement and development education; cosmopolitanism and global citizenship; wellbeing and development; international volunteering; transnationalism, migrant mobilities and their impacts on development. • Staff research expertise spans internationally including Africa, Asia and Latin America. • All members of the MSc International Development teaching team are internationally recognised academics who publish in high impact international journals and regularly receive research funding from prestigious organisations such as the ESRC, the British Academy, the Leverhulme Trust and the Newton Fund. • In addition to the teaching delivered by our team, you will have the opportunity to attend guest lectures and seminars with experts who are currently working within the industry, and who will share their first-hand experience of what it’s like to work in the sector.

The Centre for International Development The Centre brings together academics, practitioners and students to promote research, consultancy, teaching, training and public engagement on issues of global poverty and inequality, the communities and individuals who experience this, and the policies, practices and approaches that seek to address it. Entry Requirements for 2021 The course attracts students from a wide variety of professional and disciplinary backgrounds including government, the private sector and NGOs. It is also popular with continuing students from undergraduate subjects including social sciences, law, human geography, physical geography, business and other subjects. Applicants should normally have: •A minimum of a 2:2 honours degree in any subject. Applicants with appropriate work experience and/or a relevant professional qualification will be considered. •English language requirements: English language requirements - International applicants are required to have a minimum overall IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5 with 5.5 in each component (or approved equivalent*). Faculty Facilities • Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) is embedded throughout the course with tools such as the ‘Blackboard’ eLearning Portal and electronic reading lists that will guide your preparation for seminars and independent research. Our use of lecture capture software will help you revise challenging material. • The academic team will help you develop the skills required to plan, manage and review your learning, and support you if you have any issues. A central principle of this system is to help you develop a well-honed ability to work independently upon graduation. • You will be given a dedicated dissertation supervisor with relevant subject expertise and you’ll also have a guidance tutor who will provide support for your personal and academic development. • As you progress, the links between taught elements and your own independent learning will be explained at regular intervals, giving you every opportunity to achieve your full potential. • You will also have access to tailored career guidance in 1-to-1 and CV skills sessions with the Northumbria Careers team.
