Why the Law (International Commercial Law at Northumbria? An increasingly globalised economy requires international commercial law professionals to have a wide range of knowledge on issues relevant to international commerce. As part of Northumbria’s innovative and flexible LLM Law framework, the International Commercial Law specialism has been designed to meet the needs of legal practitioners within this field, as well as finance professionals who may benefit from a deeper contextual understanding. Engaging in the LLM Law’s specialist areas of contemporary and innovative legal study, within an established postgraduate legal qualification, provides you with a remarkable opportunity to enhance your career. Develop your own skills as a researcher, learning to critically reflect on your own and others’ work, challenge your own thinking, and justify your own work in the context of wider theories and practice.
Law (International Commercial Law) LLM at Northumbria What will you learn? • You will examine the key legal issues that commonly arise in commercial contracts relevant to conducting business successfully in the modern commercial world. • Alongside that you will study Intellectual Property with patents and copyright playing a crucial role in the commercial world. • You will also study Research for Advanced Legal Studies, which will equip you with the skills you need to thrive on the course. • You will study how an international sale of goods contract works, i.e., which law will be the governing law of the contract and how that law is determined. To compliment this, you will also study modules on the law of the World Trade Organisation and on International Dispute Resolution. In the third semester you will undertake either a dissertation or an applied legal project, on a topic related to International Commercial Law.

Teaching and Assessment Teaching • Courses are split into modules worth 20 or 60 credits. • You study for 180 credits per year • Lectures (large group teaching), seminars (small group discussions), workshops (interactive, practical sessions) and dissertations (large scale research project).
You will have access to our e-Learning platform Blackboard, where you can re-watch all Panoptorecorded lectures and read workshop presentation slides at your own pace. You may even be able to undertake your dissertation from home – in the UK or internationally – through the Blackboard Collaborate function. Your assessment throughout will be coursework-based, with no exams.

Entry Requirements for 2021 It is not necessary to have an undergraduate law qualification and there are no jurisdictional restrictions, so you will be part of a diverse and intellectually stimulating cohort. You will learn from each other’s experiences in a relaxed and collaborative environment. Applicants should normally have: •A minimum of a 2:2 honours degree in either law, a relevant social science based discipline, or another degree relevant to the commercial aspect of the LLM. Relevant professional qualifications or suitable work experience will also be considered. •English language requirements: English language requirements - International applicants are required to have a minimum overall IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5 with 5.5 in each component (or approved equivalent*).
