Why the LLM Legal Practice Course at Northumbria? Designed to act as a bridge between the academic study of law and the practice of law, the LLM in Legal Practice will enhance your legal knowledge and enable you to develop the skills and values necessary to become an effective and successful legal professional. This Master’s degree course offers you the opportunity to gain an internationally recognised LLM qualification in addition to your LPC. Completing an LLM project will help you to develop the professional and reflective skills necessary for practice, expanding on your legal knowledge, legal application and ability to critically analyse law, practice and policy. The programme will equip you for the demands of the legal profession and prepare you for a training contract and life as a solicitor.
LLM Legal Practice at Northumbria What will you learn? • There will be a focus on the development of professional attitudes and abilities, alongside the development of ethical responses to legal practice. • All students study legal research as a pervasive subject; this skill is practised throughout the course, and assessed as part of the LLM. • After completion of your LPC assessments in you will move on to complete your project or portfolio. The module will contain enhanced taught elements of research skills to support you in your learning. Your summative assessment for the module is a 8,000-10,000 word research project which will be linked to an area of study under your LPC.

Study Options Our flexible suite of Legal Practice Course options offer you the opportunity to learn in the way that suits you best, with part-time LLM options available. 1 Year Full Time | September Start 2 Years Part Time | September Start For the FT course you study all Core Modules and Skills in Semester 1 and 3 electives in Semester 2. For the PT course you study Litigation, certain Skills and 1 elective in Y1, and PLP, BLP, the remaining skills and 2 electives in Y2. Teaching and Assessment Teaching • Lectures (large group teaching), seminars (small group discussions), workshops (interactive, practical sessions) and dissertations (large scale research project). • Underpinning each module is an e-Learning Portal, which offers detailed learning materials including power point slides and self-evaluative tasks. All lectures are Panoptorecorded. This enables you to review lectures at your own pace and catch up on any you may have missed.
Assessment • Assessments reflect professional practice and include: • Visual / verbal presentations • Open book, problem based exams • MCQs • In course, coursework assessments. *LPC modules are assessed by examination or in context throughout the course

Entry Requirements for 2021 Applicants should normally have: • A Qualifying Law Degree awarded at a minimum of a 2:2 honours, or a GDL qualification, both awarded less than 7 years ago. Relevant professional qualifications or suitable experience will also be considered. • English language requirements - International applicants are required to have a minimum overall IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5 with 5.5 in each component (or approved equivalent*). On-course Experience Northumbria delivers opportunities to develop distinctive and unique knowledge and skills with opportunities to undertake: • The skill of interviewing is taught in the context of criminal litigation as a police station interview, with actors playing the role of the suspect during the assessment. • The skill of advocacy is taught in the context of civil litigation as a District Judge’s appointment. • We seek to use experience from practice to inform our teaching and use contacts from practice, for example to provide guest lectures, to add to the student experience.
