Why Microelectronic and Communications Engineering MSc at Northumbria? • This course is designed for students from a variety of engineering backgrounds, to enhance and develop electronic engineering knowledge and skills essential for the modern engineer. • You will gain expertise and experience in the areas of analogue and digital systems and circuit design using state-of-the-art software and processors. •

You will gain the in-depth knowledge and skills you need for analysing, modelling and optimising the performance of advanced microelectronic and communication systems.

• The course covers a broad range of topics including advanced embedded system technologies, digital design automation and silicon electronic design, as well as optical fibre communication systems and wireless communications. • Accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) on behalf of the Engineering Council as meeting the requirements for Further Learning for registration as a Chartered Engineer.

Study Options • 1 Year Full Time | September Start • 18 Months Full Time | January or September Start • 2 Years Full Time with Advanced Practice in Second Year | January or September Start


Teaching and Assessment Teaching • Courses are split into modules worth 20 or 60 credits. • You study for 180 credits per year. • Lectures (large group teaching), seminars (small group discussions), workshops (interactive, practical sessions) and dissertations (large scale research project). You will have access to our e-Learning platform Blackboard, where you can re-watch all Panopto-recorded lectures and read workshop presentation slides at your own pace. • Guest Lectures. Assessment • You’ll undertake a Masters project that will hone your skills in evaluating and applying research techniques and methodologies. The topic of the project will reflect your own unique interests. Your supervisor will provide guidance from its development through to completion. • Assessments are designed to give feedback as well as to monitor your level of achievement. The assessed projects will enable you to test your skills in ways that relate to current industrial practice. Assessments are undertaken in the form of exams, assignments, technical reports, presentations and project work.

Entry Requirements for 2021 Applicants should normally have: •A minimum of a 2:2 honours degree in Physics, Engineering or a relevant subject. Other subject qualifications, equivalent professional qualifications and/or relevant work experience will be considered on an individual basis. •English language requirements: English language requirements - International applicants are required to have a minimum overall IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5 with 5.5 in each component (or approved equivalent*). Faculty Facilities • Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) is embedded throughout the course with tools such as the ‘Blackboard’ eLearning Portal and electronic reading lists that will guide your preparation for seminars and independent research. Our use of lecture capture software will help you revise challenging material. • Technology to enhance learning in engineering is embedded throughout the programme. This takes the form of self-guided exercises, online tests with feedback, assessment feedback and videos and tutorials to support lectures. Self-development and employability are enhanced throughout the programme, especially with respect to communicating ideas in written and oral forms, the use of appropriate IT tools, personal time management, problem solving and independent learning skills. • Our range of specialist and general use facilities will support you. Throughout your work you will be able to measure, explore, experiment and model developments that are changing the way we all live our lives.
