A university with research power Northumbria’s share of world-leading and internationally excellent research has tripled and we have been recognised by the Research Excellence Framework (REF, 2014) as having the biggest rise in research power of any UK university. In 2014, we saw our internationally recognised REF research power ranking jump 30 places to 50th, the largest rise in the sector. In 2015/16, the funding we received to support our research grew by more than 100% compared to the previous year. One of the things that makes us different from other universities is our multi-disciplinary research – where we bring together different disciplines to tackle the big research questions in a changing and challenging world. We have an impressive track record of working with like-minded global research, education and business partners. Our researchers are helping advance understanding of the world around us through these partnerships.

“Research-informed teaching is all about the student’s research journey: you begin as a guide, then become their travelling companion and finally watch as they forge on ahead to discover new knowledge territories of their own.” Dr Ruth Dalton, Professor of Building Usability and Visualisation

“Research-informed teaching provides the opportunity to analyse and critically reflect upon important current issues in social work and social care, with the aim of providing innovative solutions that will demonstrate significant impact to individuals and groups who experience a range of vulnerabilities.” Professor Kim Holt, Head of Social Work, Education and Community Wellbeing Discover more northumbria.ac.uk/research

Research with impact – Seeking to answer the big questions in a changing, challenging world

What does it mean to be human? How do we survive in a world without ice? Who owns our digital footprint? These are just some of the very real, global issues that you could be challenging at Northumbria University. We’re looking to answer big questions about the future of humans, our changing world and the technology we use. We’re investigating the places we live and work, the things we use, how we live together in changing societies and how we continue to explore our own planet and beyond. Identifying bio-based products and processes to save the planet and drive the economy As we continue to plunder the earth’s natural resources, bio-based products and processes take on an even greater significance. We need to find economic, ‘greener’ alternatives to the way we live. Bio-economy seeks to find sustainable and resource-efficient solutions to the major challenges we face today in public health, food, chemicals, materials, energy production and environmental protection. Northumbria has a strong pedigree for research in this area and we’re exploring wide ranging solutions to replace more toxic methods of chemical production with ‘green chemistry’, through to improving food quality with bio-refineries. Everything we do is aimed at developing solutions useful to the economy. In recent years, we have attracted significant grants from Research Councils UK and have excellent links with a range of industrial partners, from Unilever to GlaxoSmithKline, and many other companies in the food, biotech, pharmaceutical and consumer goods industries. We’re growing our team of researchers at the cutting-edge of this practice. Discover more northumbria.ac.uk/research

A key question we’re asking

How do we fight the spread of disease in a world where bacteria resists antibiotics? If our bodies continue to develop resistance to antibiotics, we’re risking a situation where routine infections become life threatening in a fairly short time span. Our research looks to develop novel, beneficial health interventions to address the big problems we’re facing in areas such as this, over the next 20 years. Interested? Humanities – Making sense of human experiences Humanity is in a permanent state of flux. Individually and collectively we have perpetually faced challenging new questions, to which we have offered answers that take on many different forms. In the humanities, we are fascinated by how these expressions of human will and agency become evident through the medium of politics, culture or artistic expression. Our research brings together the disciplines of Art History, American Studies, Creative Writing, English Language and Linguistics, English Literature, History, and Media Studies. We are recognised for world-leading research in several disciplines and Northumbria University is ranked in the top quartile of UK universities for Research Excellence in English and History for the quality of its outputs. Ideate – Building creative solutions for tomorrow’s challenges We’ve all heard of the many products that have changed history – from the telegram to the iPhone; the wheel to the jet engine. But, where will the next ‘new’ ideas come from? Will they result from richer and deeper understandings of problems, new creative and technical opportunities for solutions, or from new approaches to design research and practice? Our research breaks through barriers with unique, novel multidisciplinary approaches to design work. Creative and critical thinking bring innovative ideas to fruition by connecting in many ways with scientific approaches, the latest technologies, business strategies, design thinking and making practices. Our research projects are distinctive and diverse but, across the board, we aim to enable positive social, cultural, commercial, professional and technological change. The ideas that we bring to life have better futures firmly in mind.

A key question we’re asking

How can innovative design practices deliver new approaches to contemporary challenges? Northumbria University is a leader in design research, not just because of the unique approaches that we can create, but also because we constantly ask whether we’re seeking to solve the right problems, and we accept and manage the risks inherent in ground-breaking design. A key question we’re asking

Northumbria is bringing together researchers who are focusing on justice for people and our planet for current and future generations.

Our ground-breaking research covers: human and environmental rights, which explores how human rights can be secured whilst protecting ecosystems; risk from environmental hazards, crimes and harms in society, which investigates the consequences of unsustainable and harmful practices; resilience and response to environmental degradation, which studies the adaptations and recovery of individuals, communities and organisations to environmental harm. We bring together an array of areas including criminology, environmental justice, global development and law.

Our work includes research into: • The impact of large scale mining on indigenous communities of Northern Chile • Extinction and international wildlife trade • Human and environmental rights in the Pacific • The potential for Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) in the Mekong Delta • The production of palm oil in Colombia’s Pacific coast region • The social impacts of declining fisheries on vulnerable coastal populations in Africa and South Asia • The National Green Tribunal in India Our team has attracted significant funding from sources such as Research Councils UK, the European Union, the Department for International Development, the British Council and the Indian Centre for Migration. Engineering efficient cities of the future Future Engineering brings together smart materials, energy, transportation and communications to examine engineering for the next generation.

A key question we’re asking

Can we create ‘sustainable’ cities?

Across the world, the percentage of the population living in urban centres is growing and our multidisciplinary approach looks at how we can meet the engineering challenges of these fast-expanding urban environments.

We’re researching into driverless cars and the future of transportation, including more efficient ways of travelling by rail in conjunction with Network Rail. Other current projects include research into waterrepelling superhydrophobic coatings and photovoltaics.

Future engineering examines how we can slow down pollution and help the environment, making the cities of the future smarter, more sustainable places.

Through our research we want engineering to be sustainable, accessible to all and cost effective for both businesses and members of the public in the future.

Northumbria has a global reputation within the field, and this reputation is backed by a £6.7m investment into new STEM facilities launched in September 2016. Discover more northumbria.ac.uk/research

Learning in partnership We’ve developed strong links with business and cultural organisations that are critical to delivering an outstanding learning experience. These partnerships ensure that what you learn at Northumbria is current and relevant in the working world. More than 560 employers and almost 50 professional bodies sponsor and accredit our courses. That means our students are recognised by potential employers for their professionalism, competencies and skills.

Award-winning partnership with BALTIC Our award-winning cultural partnership with BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art sees students working side by side with professional artists at the purposebuilt cultural hub BALTIC 39. This is the only place in the UK where an art school sits alongside an international centre for contemporary art.

We develop and deliver some of our courses in close partnership with industry, business and arts organisations. Here are just a few examples:

Through this partnership, we’ve developed the BxNU Master of Fine Art (MFA) course which sees researchers and postgraduate students developing their practice alongside leading academics and internationally renowned artists.

Industry partnership with Penspen

Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums

One of our industrial partners is oil and gasline consultancy Penspen. Working together we have developed the distance learning MSc Pipeline Integrity Management – a qualification that’s the first of its kind.

Our partnership with Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums creates great benefit for both organisations. Access to the archives, collections and specialist museum staff gives students and academics a rich resource base that enhances learning and opens up rich new research opportunities.

Students benefit from Penspen engineers’ expertise and apply the theory and practice of pipeline engineering in a work-based environment. They graduate with a degree validated by Northumbria University that sets them up for a management role in this lucrative sector.

30

Northumbria’s research expertise enables the museums and archives service to deepen and extend the knowledge they hold in collections and archives, and we collaborate to develop innovative new ways

of using and conserving collections and developing exhibitions and events that engage with the public. New Writing North Northumbria University and New Writing North share an aspiration to support and develop new creative writing talent, and to create an environment in which new writing thrives. The partnership brings speakers, knowledge and expertise into Northumbria classrooms for both undergraduate and postgraduate students, helping to develop skills that equip students to work in the literary sector. Through the Northern Writers’ Awards, the partnership also supports developing writers through bursaries, mentoring and industry networks including Channel 4, Lime Pictures and Red Productions.

Projects and placements Northumbria is the number 1 university in the North East for ‘good industry connections’ (Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey 2015/16) Getting invaluable hands-on experience working on real-life projects not only reinforces what you learn but allows you to apply your knowledge and skills in a real world context. Many of our courses offer placement opportunities where you can develop your skills and build valuable connections. You can work on collaborative projects with organisations where you can explore ideas, test concepts and create new ways of thinking and doing. Our students get involved with projects as varied as helping Northumbrian Water tackle the issue of blocked drains and flooding; discussing the future of radio with the BBC; or devising new products for Unilever. Our reputation for producing great graduates means we have long-standing relationships with a wide range of national and international companies and household names such as LEGO, Kellogg’s, Nike, GSK, BAE Systems, Procter and Gamble, NHS, Capita, Sainsbury’s, Nissan, Barbour, Disney and Microsoft.

“My placements and the experience I gained ultimately gave me the opportunity to get an interview for the school I currently work at. My current employer commented that the courses I chose to take made me stand out from the crowd.” Ben Cawley, PGCE Primary Education 32

Multidisciplinary Innovation Multidisciplinary Innovation MA/MSc is a fantastic example of where projects with industry are wholly embedded into the course. Students work alongside academics on a mix of commercial and social projects aimed at developing and delivering solutions to problems faced by external organisations. This gives students the opportunity to gain practical experience in innovation practice through key projects with globally leading firms and brands such as Unilever, BA and Mars as well as charities and regional businesses such as Percy Hedley Foundation, Whitefield Academy Trust, Northumbrian Water and BeModern.

“My course is more of a job than a university subject. I work every day of every week on client projects as a consultant, solving complex problems using innovative methods and solutions. MDI has given me the most incredible exposure to industry.” Rob Hunter, MA/MSc Multidisciplinary Innovation Discover more northumbria.ac.uk/mdi

Investing in our future Over the last ten years we’ve invested £200 million in facilities on our City and Coach Lane campuses, creating learning environments that are as close to a real-world environment as possible. We offer everything from operating theatres to fashion studios; a mock courtroom to 3D motion analysis on an indoor sprint track; from industry approved science and engineering laboratories with the latest technology to comfortable spaces for working together or quiet study. We’re now investing a further £52 million in our City Campus to create: • New state-of-the-art building for Computing and Information Sciences. • New studio spaces for the School of Architecture in a modern extension to the Sutherland Building. • New laboratories and facilities for science, technology, engineering and maths including a wind tunnel, engine test cell facility, 3D printers and a scanning electron microscope.

We are also bringing all of our student-facing services together in one area, as part of an initiative known as Student Central. This will allow you to access course information and guidance, Careers and Employment, Student Support and Wellbeing, and International advice all in one easy central location. Northumbria’s graduates who now work in leading architecture and construction firms will be involved in the development, using the skills they learned at the University to create the new spaces to benefit current and future students.

“Now is the time to create the environment we need to achieve our vision for 2025, and beyond. This investment will sustain a world-class campus for Northumbria that will lead to improvements in student satisfaction and more effective ways of working, and support our evolution into a new kind of excellent university.” Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive, Professor Andrew Wathey CBE

“ One of the main aspects of the course here at Northumbria is that it gears you up for work – it’s a very vocational course. I’ve been to Lausanne on a week-long field trip where I met members of the International Sports Federation, which taught me a huge amount about working in the sports industry. I’ve now been offered my first job when I graduate: a sports development role in Malaysia, which is my dream job.” Hannah Marshall, MSc International Sport Management
