Let’s Survive & Thrive
Editor’s Note Introduction
Inspired by tales of ascendancy and personal affirmations for the future, Surviving & Thriving began as a zine which looked at generation z and how they breathed new life back into lockdown and society as a whole from personal triumphs to business moguls. Times have changed and when you are reading this the 21st of June will have been and gone, the clubs are open, normality is at your fingertips. With these ever changing and evolving times the message of Surviving & Thriving has since thrived, the movement is now focusing on the now, the present, that thing that is a lot of things but if it is anything it is current. Through a look book of imagery, styling, storytelling and photography this issue of Surviving & Thriving is divided into 6 chapters, all of which exploring a different aspect of life after lockdown. This magazine will explore generation z and their transition out of lockdown into a life of disarray that is fuelled by youthful excess, extravagance and taking ownership over their life and their youth. This issue of Surviving & Thriving will make up for lost time, it will champion freedom, spontaneity, dreamers, adventure, excess and most important youth. Surviving & Thriving will explore themes such as the surge in colour blocking post pandemic, the act of breathing new life back into your wardrobe just as you are your life as well as exploring the sexual liberation revolution that will take place after copious months of forbidden touch. It will draw parallels with the roaring 20’s, just over 100 years after the Spanish flu here we stand in the midst of transitioning out of another global pandemic, we are light years modernised but still have that human instinct to live, live to the full, no responsibilities, no cares, no aspirations, just the moment. The pandemic has shown us that we will have a lot of moments but only we have the power to make those count, count for the future wherever it is taking us, and this time generation z is navigating themselves to their youth. lets have a roaring 2020’s .

Dear Reader, I would like to start by reiterating as I did in the first volume of Surviving & Thriving that wherever this magazine reaches you I hope It makes you feel something strongly. Surviving & Thriving is something that I wish I had at the beginning of lockdown, the self help book that we never thought we would need, a little reminder that it isn’t all bad it never is. Through photography, styling, typography and storytelling this issue of Surviving & Thriving will take you on a journey which mirrors the past but is gearing heavily towards a post covid future. In the producing of this magazine I am approaching my 21st birthday, a time in ones life that is so precious and short lived. If the pandemic reiterated anything head on to me it is that old line that my mommy always gives me ‘you are old for ages, being young comes thick and fast, it only lasts a very short amount of time. This magazine will explore the transition back into the world for generation z after covid 19, a generation who’s formative, coming of age years have been put on pause. It will explore a generation who’s caution has been thrown to the wind, drawing parallels between the roaring 20’s and other periods of excess in modern history Surviving & Thriving will look at a generation of young people who are making up for lost time in whatever way they deem necessary. The security that we once thought we had has vanished, we enter into a global economy that favours no one, what is there left to do than sit in our youth and embrace it. I hope this magazine inspires you to be young, to go to that party, to get on that plane, to wear that bright pink tutu, to live, in the now, in full colour. This magazine will abandon the loungewear, the banana bread, the slow Sundays that lead into the ever-slow Wednesdays. If this pandemic has shown anything it’s that life moves fast and I hope you have the courage to move with it, grab your youth at any age, if you are capable of reading this then you are capable of coming on this journey and living life to the full. No restrictions. No Boris. No bullshit.

Being the main character means celebrating selflove at its core, As restrictions ease this chapter champions partying the pandemic away, get back out there and be the main character, live that life.

This series of Images explores the insistence for extravagance after copious months of loungewear. Heavily inspired by Hollywood glamour this series enforces that generation z now know that even Tescos can be the theatre. SHINE & ROLL This chapter depicts the journey of a disco ball, rolling around Newcastle breathing life back into the city. It acts as a metaphor for the extravagance and glamour that will be brought to the world when lockdown is lifted, and we can all live to our full potential again. Shine wherever you inhabit, shine and roll around this earth, life is a disco. disco balls can be harnessed as a complex symbol–a metaphor for community, excess, escapism, utopia, self-fashioned identity and even, safety in nightlife, that is what this chapter symbolises.

The 80s are upon us as WGSN and other neighbouring trend forecasters predict that we are set for a surge of colour blocking post pandemic.
