CIRCA LOCKDOWN FOUR 2021 BY ELLIE HEANEY
X THRIVING
Introduction
2
Inspired by tales of ascendancy and personal affirmations for the future, Surviving and Thriving is a publication which looks at lockdown and how it breathed new life into Generation Z and society as a whole from personal triumphs to business moguls. Through a look book of imagery, styling and storytelling this issue of Surviving x Thriving is divided into three chapters, each exploring a different element of lockdown lessons and small wins. Surviving and Thriving is an escape from the news, an escape from the statistics, an escape from the media and an escape from life, it is a place to come and reflect on the months past and a place to look to the future. Surviving x Thriving will look at generation z, our trailblazers for the future and shine a spotlight on those who paved the way for innovation in a time of uncertainty that lacked all societal structure. This issue of Surviving x Thriving also looks at the concept of self-care and how lockdown has encouraged many to transform this sentiment from being a luxury to a priority. Finally, this issue will explore inhabitancy in lockdown, how where one has spent their lockdown can alter their experience and why contextually and metaphorically it shaped the creativity of this publication.

SURVIVNG
Dear Readers, I hope wherever this publication reaches you it makes you feel something strongly. Surviving X Thriving is something I wish I had at the beginning of lockdown, it’s the self-help book we never thought we would need, a little reminder that it isn’t all bad, it never is. Through imagery, typography, styling and short stories I hope this publication allows you to reflect and remember the forgotten, reach into the past, find comfort in the present and make sense on the intangible future. This publication allowed me to make sense of 2020, to ultimately seek out positivity, new beginnings and solace in a time that if somehow morphed into a biscuit would most definitely be a Fig Roll. 2020 was the year I was transported from my university experience back into my family home, it was the year I initially though I was going to lose my marbles, but it was also the year I fell in love with Ireland again, I formed a new and flourishing relationship with my family in our comradery and also started to consider the history of my hometown and surroundings in the context with Covid 19. In Derry, my home where I spent lockdown from March till September just two decades ago was renound for the wearing of gas masks in regard to The Troubles in the north of Ireland, 23 years on we are back in masks in the city due to Covid 19, when mirroring the two there is one major difference in my city and that is that we are now a united people, standing as one to beat this virus. I hope this sentiment allows you to look at your inhabitancy, where you spent lockdown and who you spent it with, whether that’s your family or your friends who are virtual or in person, your health care worker who visits to assist you or your animals etc. I hope this reminds you that we are all in this together, this is the beginning of a new age of gratifying freedom and that its not all bad, it never is.

Were a month in now, if you would have asked me a month ago how I would have anticipated to feel as this stage of lockdown I would have more than likely said I would be pulling my hair out, but I am still. I have just been on my daily walk and as cliché as it sounds, I feel as though that hour a day is breathing new life and gratitude through me. As the world becomes more jarring and intense around us at this time my wee world in Derry with my family becomes quieter and more harmonious. In a roundabout way I feel as though this lockdown is benefitting my mental health in ways I never expected, a month and a half ago I was at university and the world was noisy, I had worries I thought were paramount which now in reflection are insignificant. Through lockdown I feel as though the universe has done what is always seems to do every few generation’s, it draws us to a halt & as swans are starting to swim through the canals in Venice and nestle into each other In the Trevi Fountain I in my own personal way am finding my way back to myself, my mind is diaphanous. The notion that the world is finding solace and comfort in banana bread and that weekly zoom call with friends. The one where you always drink that glass of wine that tips you over the edge and you find yourself a bit worse for wear the next day, through all of this I am the most content I have been in a long time, so I have to say thank you to lockdown. Thank you, lockdown, for making me slow down, for making the world slow down, for reminding me that when everything is stripped back that the people under the same roof as me at this moment are the most precious people in life, the people that make life spectacular and worth all the other stuff that we go through that’s a bit rubbish. Thank you for reminding me that life is extraordinary and for grounding me. For making me realise how much time we have and in the same breath how minuscule our time on this earth is, for the realisation of something that seems so simple, those 24 hours in the day and what you condense into that. We all get those 24 hours a day but what is not guaranteed for us is how much of a span of years we have as individuals, we all get those same hours so it’s how you use it, and I will now be using it wisely.

DEAR LOCKDOWN I know you’ve been detrimental to many but in so many ways you’ve been so good to me.You’ve made me fall in love with Ireland again, the landscapes at my doorstep, all of us crammed into the car eating copious amounts of free state derry milk, those precious moments where you close your eyes, sigh gently and just exhale, I am content. I go to the beach every week now, as my family and I wind round the coast of Donegal each beach seems to get more spectacular than the one before, we bought a picnic basket... and we actually used it regularly, very wholesome. As the weeks charged on, they seemed as though they went in a millisecond but also at a eased leisurely pace, much like everybody else I had consumed more iced coffees (demonstrated on this morning) and banana bread that was ever necessary for my cholesterol, but I was content, I was still and as the world was so greatly documented as crumbling around all of us I’ve never felt as at peace with my surroundings. With every one hour walk a day it was as if it was 60 minutes of unchartered freedom and the fresh air was breathing new life into me. Mid-summer came and my daddy’s 50th would eventually pass, the whole family was scheduled to cruise the Bahamas for the big celebration. In the weeks leading up to the has been plans of sailing the turquoise ocean I would be lying if I said we as a family did not take turns being slightly bitter. When the day then came for the big 5 0 perspective hit, lockdown ultimately made me realise that I was here, in my kitchen surrounded by my family and a ginormous cake clotted in buttercream icing. It really is the wee things. So, thank you lockdown, thank you for bringing me back to me, to say it’s been a transitional period would be an understatement. Sometimes the world does halt for one reason or another and with this comes perspective...and joy... and admiration for what matters moving forward, I didn’t think it then, but you were the making of me.
