WELCOME In my career I have tried to inspire young people to be the best that they can be, to take chances and to bring about positive change in society. These are exactly the same values I have found at Northumbria University. Known as a centre of innovation, diversity and research Northumbria is focused on giving its students a competitive edge in today’s global job market.

Universities are no longer just about the quality of the degree and teaching. People want more than a qualification. Employability is a massive reason to go to university and Northumbria is very good at preparing its students for working life. My dad used to always say to me, "Education gives you choices". When I was 15 I thought he sounded really boring, now I realise he was absolutely right. Just being at university is an incredibly positive experience and I like being around positive people. When I came for my first meeting at Northumbria I had a wander around campus and was immediately struck by how friendly and upbeat everybody was.

If you choose Northumbria I want to encourage you to make the most of the opportunities it offers, try different things, meet new people and most of all have fun. The things you learn at university will set you up for the rest of your life. Tanni, Baroness Grey-Thompson DBE DL Chancellor of Northumbria University

Our course principles To help you emerge as a global graduate for the 21st century, we continually work with employers and professionals to make sure that what you learn at Northumbria is current and relevant. At Northumbria, we offer you a wide range of undergraduate courses, and in some ways, they couldn’t be more different. To ensure we consistently deliver an outstanding learning experience, we build our courses around the following four principles: Research-rich learning

Learning environment

Achieving together

Our research is helping to shape the world. And all the great stuff we do starts with a way of thinking.

Over the last ten years we’ve invested £200 million in facilities, creating real-world work environments on our City and Coach Lane campuses. In the next two years, a further £52 million is being spent to build an even better Northumbria to transform your student experience. Digital technology is built into our courses to ensure that you have what you need, wherever and whenever you need it, so that you can communicate easily with tutors, and access all our specialist software.

Underpinning all of this is our passion and commitment to work with you at every step of your learning experience so that you make the most of your potential.

No matter what you study, you will develop the ability to think independently, analyse and question data, and present evidence to communicate your ideas.

Real-world experience You’ll get regular opportunities to apply your knowledge and build your skills through projects, placements and study abroad opportunities. You’ll learn from our academics who’ve had incredible careers in business and industry, and you’ll graduate with the skills and experience that will give your career an edge.

10

To make sure that all the courses we offer stick to these principles and remain current and relevant, we continuously review and improve course content in consultation with students and employers. This means your course may be improved between you applying to Northumbria and enrolling. To keep up to date with any enhancements, visit northumbria.ac.uk/yourlearning.

Celebrating our students’ successes At Northumbria University we recognise our students’ hard work and achievements. Our students receive industry recognition and success in major national and international competitions. Whilst we can’t list everything, here are a few recent highlights: Recognising the North East’s best new nursing talent Six nursing and midwifery students received The Heath Award in recognition of their efforts whilst training to join the profession. The Heath Award, which was established in 1892 by George Yeoman Heath, former President of the Royal College of Medicine, is presented each year to the best nurses graduating from Northumbria nursing courses. Vicky McNally, Tracy Morris, Garry Uy, Alexandra Marvel, Rholynn Jacinto and Jessica Robinson (pictured below) were chosen after being nominated by the tutors and hospital staff they worked with whilst on placement.

Two Northumbria Fine Art students among winners of prestigious £40,000 art prize Delivered jointly by Northumbria University, Newcastle, and BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, the Woon Foundation Prize is one of the UK’s most generous prizes for artists. Hannah Barker and Sheyda Porter (BA (Hons) Fine Art) both excelled and were shortlisted amongst 10 finalists across the UK. An additional prize of £9,000 was awarded to Sheyda and £2,500 was awarded to Hannah.

Royal seal of approval for graduate entrepreneur

Architecture students keep on trekking Three architecture students were the only student team among an international field of professionals to be recognised in an international architecture competition. The competition in partnership with CDS Nord Property Developers called on entrants to create a design that was aesthetically pleasing, but which also provided safe, comfortable and inviting lodgings for trekkers. Alex Turner, Andrew Gibbard and Beth Scott were praised for their design, ‘Odin’s Retreat’ (pictured below).

Dan Robson, founder of Green Digit Gardening, collected The Duke of York Young Entrepreneur Award from the Duke himself at a special awards ceremony. The awards aim to highlight the roles that young entrepreneurs play in creating businesses that demonstrate commercial or social impact, as well as having potential for sustainability and growth. Dan established his gardening products company while studying Design for Industry at Northumbria. After undertaking a work placement in a plastics packaging company, he realised that he could help to reduce waste by making packaging part of the product. Inspirational staff Our academic staff did amazing things before they came here and continue to inspire at Northumbria too. Their drive and commitment to lead their discipline is demonstrated, not just through their research and its impact on the world, but also through the recognition they receive for what they do. Here are just a few of our award-winning academics: Karl Wharton MBE Senior Lecturer Karl Wharton, a Senior Lecturer in Sport Coaching received the award of Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2016 Queen’s Birthday Honours List, in recognition of his outstanding service to coaching gymnasts, both regionally and internationally.

Karl Wharton is a highly respected national and international coach and educator. His experience brought a unique and valued perspective to his teaching that benefited my education. I was really inspired throughout my degree to do so much more than I first thought possible. Danielle Hogg, BSc (Hons) Sport Coaching

12

This is a very great honour, and one I never dreamed of receiving. For me it is very important to continue working as a practitioner with athletes at every level. It enables me to apply academic theory to real-world practice, which is of huge benefit to both my students and my athletes. Karl Wharton MBE

Professor Greta Defeyter

Elaine achieved a highly prestigious National Teaching Fellowship in the Higher Education Academy's teaching awards for recognition of her contribution to the success of the Student Law Office, which provides communitybased pro-bono legal services, and for her role in developing Northumbria Law School's Business and Commercial Law Clinic.

Leverhulme Trust Early Career Research Fellow

This is an incredibly prestigious title which is awarded through a peer reviewed process. I’m thrilled to have been bestowed with this honour, especially as my research is making a real difference to children, families and communities. Professor Greta Defeyter, BSc (Hons) CPsychol FRSA FHEA FBPsS PhD. Associate Pro Vice-Chancellor (Strategic Planning and Engagement). Director of Northumbria's Healthy Living Research Unit.

Working in the Student Law Office in my fourth year provided me with the opportunity to give members of the general public free legal advice with the support of being supervised by a qualified solicitor. This was the best experience and has given me the practical skills I needed for employment.

And you’ll be learning from some of the best people in their fields. But learning isn’t something that we do for you. And it’s not something you have to do alone. It’s something we achieve together.

Here’s what that means for you: We’ll be clear about what’s expected of you. Your tasks will always have a purpose. Our academics want to hear about your goals, and will take them into account at every opportunity when planning your work.

You’ll be part of a learning community. In fact, lots of learning communities. Staff will structure and encourage these groups, but they won’t dictate to them. We create opportunities for interaction and conversations around learning and assessment between peers and tutors, both in the classroom and online, which allows you to learn how to evaluate your own progress and direct your own learning. You won’t be assessed just for the sake of it. Assessment is about helping you learn and taking you a step closer to your goals. If you do really well on an assignment, we’ll explain why. If you don’t, we’ll work with you so you know how to improve. We are always interested to hear about your experiences of assessment. We often draw on student feedback when planning future assessment processes.

The level of knowledge and experience that the academics bring into the learning environment at Northumbria is outstanding. It’s really reassuring to know that the vast amount of research in industry that they’ve been a part of, they then bring back into the classroom. It’s been of real importance to me that the teaching methods are up to date, incorporate current, real-world case studies and as a result I’m much more confident for the world of work upon graduation. Kirsty Gibson, BA (Hons) Business with Marketing Management

Research-rich learning As active researchers, our academics explore some of the world’s most urgent and complex problems. Of course they’ll share what they’re doing. But more than that, they’ll explain to you how they do it. Throughout your degree you will be challenged to view your work through a research-rich lens and ask yourself:

• You will be an active participant in your learning, with an emphasis on critical enquiry and opportunities for self-directed study.

• Am I asking the right questions?

• Your studio and laboratory experiences will allow you to learn through doing, and offer you the opportunity to explore new ways of working.

• Am I looking at problems in fresh ways? • Does my work bring together different points of view? • Can I justify my conclusions? From the start of your degree you’ll experience the impact of our research-informed learning: • Your lecturers will not only be experts in their discipline, many will have developed the discipline through their internationally published research.

Research-informed teaching empowers our students to become researchers in their own right and to co-create knowledge. It enhances their intellectual engagement with their subject and makes them more employable. Dr James McConnel, Reader in History

• As you progress through your degree you will have the opportunity, particularly in your final year, to be actively involved in research projects. You may not see yourself as a researcher in the future. But no matter what you decide to do, this way of thinking will help you change your world. Discover more northumbria.ac.uk/research

Employers love travellers Northumbria is all about helping you to experience new things. And one of the best ways to do this is by living and learning in a different culture. Thanks to our network of partner organisations, you’ll have the opportunity to study in countries from Spain to South Korea and from Canada to China.

Study abroad We talk to a lot of employers about what they want from a graduate. Something that comes up again and again is 'international awareness'. We also see student confidence go through the roof after studying abroad. Once you’ve lived abroad, made friends in a new country and studied in a second institution, cracking the job market doesn’t seem so tough.

Studying abroad at Florida Atlantic University gave me personal development opportunities I would never have imagined possible. I have gained confidence, self-assurance and resilience. It is an amazing opportunity I would highly recommend! Carley Denton, BA (Hons) Human Resource Management – awarded ‘Exchange Student of the Year’.

Interested? Read on to find out why you should come to Northumbria to study the subject of your choice, what makes our departments so special and what courses we have to offer. Visit our website and use our course search to find out all you need to know about your course – from modules to staff and student profiles to graduate careers.

56

Once you know which course you’re interested in, how do you know what you need to achieve to get here? On every course page we’ve highlighted the entry points we would typically ask for. These requirements are provided as a guide to our standard offer levels and we will take into account alternative equivalent qualifications. Please see the Admissions information on page 98 for more details. If you’re not sure how your qualifications translate into UCAS Tariff, look at page 102 or visit the UCAS website at ucas.com

At Northumbria we have a flexible and inclusive approach to assessing potential candidates. We know that there are many different qualifications, skills and experiences which can all contribute to your application. We make an offer based on the individual and our published entry requirements are typical of our standard offer, so just think of them as a guideline. Feel free to get in touch to talk to us about any queries you may have on +44 (0)191 406 0901 or email er.admissions@northumbria.ac.uk. A member of our dedicated admissions team will be happy to help.

Questions you may have… Is my course accredited? Northumbria has a long and successful history of professional accreditation for its courses. However, we continually review and improve our course content and delivery, and continued accreditation is subject to approval of those improvements by the relevant accrediting body. To ensure you are kept up to date with any enhancements visit northumbria.ac.uk/yourlearning. To find out which professional body accredits your course visit northumbria.ac.uk/courses and search for the course you are interested in. What is an Integrated Masters degree? An Integrated Masters (MComp, MEng, MGeog, MMath or MPhys) is a fully fundable undergraduate degree with the opportunity to undertake a whole year of study at Masters level. An Integrated Masters lasts longer than a standard three or four year undergraduate degree but gives you the added advantage of graduating with a qualification at Masters level. Please visit northumbria.ac.uk/ integratedmasters to see a list of these courses. What is a top-up course? A top-up course is for you if you have previously studied a related course of Higher Education such as a Higher National Diploma (HND) or a Foundation Degree (FD). A top-up course allows you to ‘top-up’ your HND or FD and achieve a full degree after only one extra year of study.

What is a completion award? You can follow a completion pathway if you have started a course in a similar subject at one of Northumbria’s partner institutions, and you wish to transfer to Northumbria to complete your degree. You can also qualify for a completion award with a HND or FD. Is there a study abroad or placement option on my course? With the exception of courses with compulsory placements, there is a study abroad and/or placement option on the majority of our courses, which can vary in length depending on the course. You apply for your selected course and have the option to apply for study abroad and/or a placement after your first year. There is a competitive selection process. Our dedicated Student Placement team and Careers and Employment service are available at Student Central to support and help you.. Please visit northumbria.ac.uk/studyabroad and northumbria.ac.uk/placementoptions to find out more information.

What is a foundation year? A foundation year is an additional year of study at the start of your degree, which means your undergraduate degree will be 4 or 5 years in duration. Foundation years can also be referred to as an extended degree. A foundation year is designed for those students who may not have achieved the entry requirements for their chosen degree course, or whose qualifications may be in a different subject area and who want to explore taking a degree in something completely new. This course provides an extra year of study for you to get the subject knowledge you need, and as long as you pass the foundation year you will automatically progress to the first year of a named degree which is part of the scheme. Please visit northumbria.ac.uk/ foundationyear to see a list of these courses. Will there be any optional modules on my course? Many of our undergraduate courses offer option choices in Years 2 and 3; you will be asked to indicate your preferences well in advance of the options running. To find out more information on module options visit northumbria.ac.uk/courses and search for the course that you are interested in. For more information visit northumbria.ac.uk

Why study Business at Newcastle Business School? Newcastle Business School has a global reputation for delivering some of the best business management education in the UK. We will equip you with the in-depth understanding, skills and experience you need to succeed in business. • In 2015, Newcastle Business School was named Business School of the Year at the Times Higher Education (THE) Awards. • We are part of an elite group of less than 1% of business schools worldwide, following accreditation by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) in business and accounting – we were the first in Europe to gain the double accreditation. • Our degrees are recognised for their quality by many professional bodies including CIM, CIPD, CIPS, CISI, AACSB, EPAS, ACCA, CIMA, CIPFA, AIA, CILT, AAT, ICAEW and ITT. • Newcastle Business School is the first University in North East England to be awarded the prestigious ‘Small Business Charter’ in

recognition of our work to support small businesses, start-ups and their contribution to local economic growth. • If you want to focus on a particular area of business we have a range of specialist courses, but we also have general business management courses which allow you to gain a broad understanding of business. • A vast majority of our courses offer study abroad opportunities at many of our partner universities in Europe, USA, South East Asia and Australia. • Newcastle Business School’s placements and internships give you the opportunity to gain a real insight into the industry you want to work in. They strengthen your CV and provide you with your own network of industry contacts.

I chose Northumbria as the Newcastle Business School has a great reputation which it certainly lives up to! The tutors and facilities are also amazing which helps when doing a degree. I was really impressed that so many courses offer the option to take a work placement, study abroad, or even both. William Mather, BA (Hons) Business with Economics

Admissions information Your choice of university is an important one and we view selection as a two-way process. You select your university as much as the university selects you! Northumbria University welcomes all applicants who are likely to benefit from and contribute to our challenging and stimulating learning environment. If you have the potential, ability and motivation to benefit from both your intended course of study and the wider experience of university life, then we can’t wait to meet you. The University is committed to the promotion of equal opportunities. We welcome applications from candidates of all social and ethnic backgrounds, and each individual will be considered solely on the basis of their individual merits.

Entrance requirements You can find out what the entry requirements are for the course you're interested in by looking along the table where your course is listed. To help you, we've listed the entry requirements as UCAS Tariff points and also grades from either A Levels or the BTEC Extended Diploma. Don't worry if the qualification you're studying isn't listed in the table, we accept a lot of qualifications for entry and are happy to talk to you about your individual profile.

98

If you want to find out what points are awarded to the grades for your qualification then take a look at our handy table on page 102, or go to ucas.com and search for their Tariff calculator.

Selection process For further information on the selection process for your course, please see northumbria.ac.uk/courses For most courses, a decision will be made based on what you tell us about yourself in your UCAS application, so we'll look at your academic qualifications, potential achievement, work and life experience, and personal skills and qualities. For some courses, you may need to attend an interview before we let you know if we can make you an offer. Interviews are compulsory for Interior Architecture, courses in Art and Design, and courses in Health, Social Work and Teaching. If you are made a conditional offer (including academic qualifications and DBS/medical clearance for some courses) then you must meet all conditions by 31 August 2018.

Any offer the University may make is subject to the terms and conditions set out in our Admissions Policy, the offer letter and Handbook of Student Regulations. Your attention is particularly drawn to the Student Enrolment Conditions in section 2, details of which can be found by visiting our website at northumbria.ac.uk/handbook Details of Northumbria University's Admissions Policy can be found by visiting our website at northumbria.ac.uk/admissions-policy

Writing your personal statement If you’re feeling a bit daunted about writing your UCAS personal statement then don’t worry – there’s a wealth of information available to help you get started. If you’re in school or college then your teachers and careers advisers will be a great source of information, hints, tips and motivation. If you’re not in school or college then you can find some fantastic resources on the UCAS website, including personal statement mind maps, timelines, worksheets and videos. You can only write one personal statement for all your choices – which can’t be changed once you’ve submitted your form – so you’ve got to make sure that it’s the best it possibly can be. Personal statements are all about you – this is your chance to sell yourself and tell the universities you apply for why they should choose you, so try and make your personal statement stand out. Think about what you want to tell universities about why you want to study at degree level and what really interests you about your chosen subject.

What skills, knowledge and achievements do you have that make you suitable for the course and will help you do well? These skills could be from education, employment or work experience, hobbies and interests or social activities. Think about which of your skills are suitable for the courses you’re applying for – do your research and make sure that you link your relevant skills and experience to what the selectors are looking for. Discover more Visit our website for a full guide to writing personal statements, plus interview tips and advice on portfolio preparation, at northumbria.ac.uk/iwantguides

Money matters A Northumbria degree is a valuable investment in your future. Understanding the way funding and finances work can be quite challenging, so we’ve simplified the different types of support available. This guide should ease any concerns you or your parents/ guardians may have about the cost of university, and we’re always here if you want to discuss your options further. This information is for UK students only* If you are an international student go to northumbria.ac.uk/ international or see the next page.

Tuition fee loan Tuition fee loans pay for your course and you can apply for a loan to cover the cost of these fees, regardless of your household income. For more information on tuition fee loans and maintenance loans visit gov.co.uk/studentfinance/overview where you can also apply.

What is a scholarship? Northumbria University scholarships aim to reward academic achievement. If you do well in your exams before you join us, you could be on target for a nonrepayable scholarship to help you with your finances.

104

What is a bursary? Northumbria University bursaries are cash contributions towards your time at university, to be spent on things like food, rent, books, etc. If you are eligible for a bursary, the amount you get will depend on your household income as calculated by the Student Loans Company when you apply for support. Bursaries do not need to be paid back.

2018 Northumbria scholarships and bursaries To keep up to date with our 2018 scholarship and bursary scheme visit northumbria.ac.uk/feesfunding

Help with living costs At Northumbria we are lucky to be situated in a very student-friendly city, with many retailers and services offering discounts for students. In fact we’re one of the most cost-effective cities to live in. Many students decide to work part-time and can sign up to JobsOnline, a national recruitment website, to access part-time vacancies. There are also other ways in which you may be able to access financial help towards the costs of living: for example, a maintenance loan (repayable) from Student Finance England or other funding bodies. If you are resident

in the UK and are applying for a full-time course then you may qualify for a loan. Please see gov.uk/ student-finance/overview for more information. The University’s Student Support and Wellbeing service also has a hardship fund which can help you if you are a UK student who is experiencing financial hardship, providing you meet certain eligibility criteria. There is a different process if you’re a student from Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland. Please see gov.uk/student-finance for more information. Discover more northumbria.ac.uk/feesandscholarships Visit the Money Matters section on our website northumbria.ac.uk/moneymatters You can also speak to one of the University’s Funding Advisers. Information on how to contact an Adviser can be found at northumbria.ac.uk/financialsupport * Please note that as of January 2017, EU funding for 2018/2019 entry has not yet been confirmed. As soon as this information is available, we will update the website: northumbria.ac.uk/ feesandscholarships

Terms and conditions The contract between the student and Northumbria University, which is formed on acceptance of the offer of a place on an academic programme, is subject to the conditions outlined in an offer letter and subject to terms set out in the Handbook of Student Regulations. Your attention is particularly drawn to the Student Enrolment Conditions in Section 2 northumbria.ac.uk/handbook Our courses

Admissions policy

This prospectus describes the courses offered by Northumbria University (‘the University’). Further documents describing the teaching, examination, assessment and other educational services (‘educational services’) offered by the University are made accessible to all students. The information in this prospectus was correct at the time of publication (February 2017), but is subject to change. For example, to ensure that all of our courses remain current and relevant, our leading academics continuously review and improve course content in consultation with students and employers. So to ensure that you are kept up to date with any enhancements, make sure you visit northumbria.ac.uk/yourlearning The University reserves the right to make variations to the contents or methods of delivery of courses, to discontinue courses and to merge or combine courses if such action is reasonably considered to be necessary. If the University discontinues or decides not to provide the course, or makes any significant variation to the course prior to the course commencing then it will use reasonable endeavours to notify you in advance and you shall be entitled to withdraw your application by written notice to the University and fees paid by you will be refunded.

Where entry requirements for an undergraduate degree programme are expressed as a range of grades (e.g. 120-128 tariff points), each offer will be determined on an individual basis, taking account of an applicant’s profile. It is not possible therefore to advise prospective students whether they will receive an offer, or of the conditions attached to an offer, before their application has been considered. Subjects and qualifications being taken, predicted grades, contextual data, and information in the personal statement and reference all contribute to an individual’s profile. Our published entrance requirements are typical of a standard offer and are intended as a guideline for applicants to consider when assessing their suitability for our courses. There are no guarantees that an offer will or will not be made, or the level at which the offer will be made. In any given admissions cycle, the terms of conditional offers made to applicants will not normally differ significantly from the entry requirements published in advance in respect of the admissions cycle concerned. Any necessary amendments to typical entry requirements which take place during the admissions cycle will be published on the University’s website.

108

Finance information The financial information in this prospectus refers to UK and EU students (page 104) and international

students (page 105) only who begin their studies at Northumbria in 2018. The grants and loans you may be eligible for depend entirely on your own personal and family circumstances and the particular course you choose to study. Please get in touch if you have any queries and we will do our best to help.

Other information Copies of this publication are available in alternative formats such as braille, large print or disk. In the first instance please contact our undergraduate team for details. Email: bc.ug.marketing@northumbria.ac.uk The information given in this prospectus is for guidance only. In compiling it the University has taken every care to be as accurate as possible, but the prospectus must be read as subject to change at any time and without notice. It is not to be taken as imposing upon the institution any obligation to provide, or to continue to provide, any course or amenity described herein. We are committed to considering all applications received at UCAS by the 15 January deadline equally, and applications received after 15 January will normally only be considered if there are still vacancies on a course. You may, if you wish, defer your entry for one year, to 2019, and you should make sure you indicate this in the appropriate section of your application form.
