On Sunday 28th August some of the team who will be running this year’s Great North Run held a bag pack at Tesco Consett to boost their fundraising. Generous customers supported with donations totaling £786.22. We have 21 runners this year all running to raise funds for Northumbria Blood Bikes. We are also joined by 5 runners who are raising money for The Nationwide Association of Blood Bikes. They have put a massive amount of effort into training and fundraising, we can't thank them enough. This year we will have our cheering point outside the entrance of the South Tyneside District Hospital on John Reid Road, South Shields (opposite the fire station). Please come down and help cheer on our runners, everyone is welcome. Providing effective and timely transportation of essential blood and medical products Registered Charity Number 1166689

We celebrated our second National Blood Bikes Awareness Day, on 12th August, we focused this year on the ‘diversity’ of the work we do and the volunteers who keep us running. “We’re not just about blood!” We started our day with a big announcement. In the early hours of the morning our team out on the road hit another milestone. Our volunteers have completed 10,000 jobs since going live on 03/02/14. Northumbria Blood Bikes are the men and women across the North East of England, who have dedicated their spare time, to provide a free out-of-hours rapid response courier service for the transportation of medical essentials. We transport blood, samples and other urgent and emergency items to hospitals and health centres in our region as well as ‘Blood on Board’ to the Great North Air Ambulance. Our entire operation is ran by unpaid volunteers and financed through public donations, fundraising events and corporate sponsorship. Blood bikes are known as the ‘unseen emergency service’ due to the nocturnal network of volunteers who are rarely witnessed by the recipients of our deliveries. Calls are handled by our own shift coordinators who answer calls then pass them on to our riders and drivers. These call handlers keep track of the team out on the roads and ensure they reach their destination safely. All of our riders and drivers hold advanced qualifications and are fully trained for handling the precious items they transport. Aside from the operational roles we also have a team of fundraisers and speakers who are vital to our continued awareness campaigns. Thanks to the hard work and dedication of our committed volunteers and generous support of the public we can continue to #makeadifferencetogether and save lives #ItsWhatWeDo. We combined our awareness day, based in Times Square Newcastle outside the Centre for Life, with a group coffee morning. Throughout the day members popped by for a cuppa and a catch up. The team from Made in Tyne & Wear’s Bulletin stopped by for an interview as did Heart NE News. One of our patrons Heidi Mottram, CEO of Northumbrian Water, recorded a special message about “It's not just about blood”. Thank you for your continued support Heidi.

We are always grateful for the support of our Patrons. Whilst Prof Jarman couldn't be with us in person, he was there in spirit, whilst covering his important A&E role. Thanks Bob appreciate the work you as doing. “Unfortunately manning the emergency department at the RVI today as would have loved to be with the Northumbria Blood Bikes crew at the Centre for Life Times Square, Newcastle upon Tyne. We're celebrating the good work done locally, and also nationally via sister organisations, transporting essential blood and medical supplies out of hours! As a major trauma centre consultant I've seen first handhold this service benefits patient care. This includes daily supply of blood products to the Great North Air Ambulance! I am so proud to be a patron of NBB; they are all volunteers but are so professional and driven. However, we still need more volunteers.

Funds raised to date from the staff and customers of Dobbies Ponteland:

It’s incredible that we have raised a further £1545.34 at Dobbies Ponteland during August. That brings our total over the £9,000 mark which is enough for us to purchase a used bike to be converted into operational use. Since choosing us as their charity of the year they aim to support us with raising enough money, (£15,000), for us to purchase and fully equip a new bike. We are thankful for the continued support of customers and the warm welcome our volunteers from the staff.
