North Wales is a stunning region, and its diversity can only be truly appreciated when you get off the beaten track. But it goes without saying that hiking up our highest mountain isn’t for everyone, which is where climbing aboard a historic steam train comes into its own…

A journey on the Snowdon Mountain Railway, which has been described as one of the most scenic railway journeys in the world, is a once in a lifetime adventure. Trains depart from Llanberis Station and begin their climb up Snowdon, Yr Wyddfa – a journey experienced by some 12 million travellers since 1896.

Weather permitting, the Traditional Diesel Service will be running daily until 30th of October, while the Heritage Steam Experience will run from 3rd June to 11th September. During 2022 trains will run to Clogwyn Station, which is ¾ distance up Snowdon, and this open mountainside station offers spectacular views to the valleys below. With stunning scenery and awe-inspiring views it’s all part of a great day out for you and your family in North Wales.

Back on the coast, and the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways offer a range of experiences to suit all tastes. Members of the famous ‘Great Little Trains of Wales’, these narrow gauge steam railways run from Caernarfon and Porthmadog with both part- and full-day options. Beddgelert and Blaenau Ffestiniog are both popular destinations, and food hampers may be added to make the most of your visit.

Take yourself back to the ‘holidaymaker special’ trains of yesteryear with named trains such as the ‘Gelert Explorer’ or the ‘Snowdonia Star’, both running from Caernarfon, a great place to start your journey being only 15 minutes off the A55 expressway, so easily accessible.
