with your support this issue celebrates my 11th Anniver-

sary.

Where has that time gone? 11 years ago I had an idea and thought I would try it and have never looked back since, well on the odd occasion I have—it is always with a sile. . This means I have written 132 columns—are you not bored yet and what have I found to write about all the time. I never ever thought North Weald Village Life would be where it is now, just 11 years later. It is very much a part of the family and hopefully the community.

So in between getting over the shock of publishing this issue celebrating my 11th Anniversary, the last few weeks have been busy. Attending Thornwood Village Festival, St Andrews School Fete and of course Race for Life, to name but a few. Andy has plucked up all his energy and reserves and penned a poem this month, so hopefully the withdrawal symptoms will ease. The summer holidays are fast approaching and for anybody who is planning a holiday I hope you have a lovely time. Don’t forget to chill out and get some rest and enjoy the scenery, time flies so quickly.

THANK YOU

This summer holidays are fast approching, we hope to drag Andy out and visit beaches, thene parks and go for a picnic. This summer is an end of an era, and come the end of August we may be looking around Oxford as my daughter is hopefully going to accept a place at Oxford Brookes university. I will be nervous, but will try not to show it. Please remember the magazine is for you to share news, views, events, recipes etc. Please send these into me regularly I am sure you would like to read contributions by local residents. Without your readership and support North Weald Village Life would not be here today, and planning for tomorrow, thank you for your support yesterday, today and tomorrow. For those of you have heard of Facebook, North Weald Village Life has a group page and has over 1200 members. I am delighted that it works so well with all the contributions, posts, dialogue, help etc that goes into the group every month by members. One way in which it works brilliantly is to help people find their pets, especially dogs. The group has reunited many dogs and owners over the last few weeks. Don’t forget the pet feature, send in your pets—funny, cute, etc to share with readers. We are a village of pet lovers.

Epping,

P

P Council property fire safety measures

Following the tragic fire at Grenfell Tower in the London Borough of Kensington and Chelsea in June 2017, Epping Forest District Council would like to reassure and inform our residents about their approach to fire safety in council properties across the Epping Forest district. Quick facts:• Epping Forest District Council owns no high-rise blocks of flats over 5 storeys • In the event of a fire, their flats are of a sufficient height that can be accessed by the Fire Service • Hard-wired linked smoke and heat detectors have been installed in all council properties • Regular fire safety risk assessments are carried out for all communal areas in council properties • There are very few flats across the district with external cladding. Those that do, do not have the same cladding as used on the Grenfell Tower • Cladding materials are being checked as a precaution

30-minute fire resistant front doors have been installed on all council flats in blocks The council is never complacent about fire safety and it is hoped that this information gives some reassurance. If for some reason you have not had hard wired smoke and heat detectors or 30 minute fire resistant doors installed, please contact us as a matter Thornwood Tragedy of urgency if you live in a building under the council’s ownership: An tragic accident took place on the B1393 at Thornwood 01992 562727 or housingassets@eppingforestdc.gov.uk. Common on 1st July.

My Care Record now live across Princess Alexandra Hospital According to NHS West Essex CCG People in west Essex and east and north Hertfordshire are now benefiting from more efficient, joined-up care. My Care Record allows clinicians at The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust in Harlow to view a patient’s medical history over a secure network. Initially the system was piloted in A&E but has now been rolledout across the whole hospital. My Care Record delivers a more productive service, ensuring that there is more clinical time spent on patients, fewer tests, more accurate prescriptions and safe and secure decision-making. It provides health and care professionals access to view information and patients are asked for their permission before any records are viewed. Plans are ongoing to widen My Care Record to include other hospitals in the next few months. A dedicated website, www.mycarerecord.org.uk - with information and frequently asked questions, has been created for people to find out more.

Reporting crime anonymously Independent crime-fighting charity Crimestoppers in Essex received a record number of reports from the public over the last 12 months, achieving the highest percentage increase across the country. From April 2016 to March 2017, the Crimestoppers’ UK Contact Centre handled over 4,200 Essex-related reports, a 44% increase on the previous 12 months, compared to the charity’s national average increase of 24%. The figures show that the highest number of reports to Crimestoppers were for drugs offences and driving offences - including drink driving; while others categories showing an increase in reporting included information around wanted individuals, alleged assault or harassment, theft and possession of a weapon. The number of online reports has also increased, with nearly half of all information now received via the Crimestoppers’ secure online form as opposed to over the phone. Crimestoppers encourages people to pass on information about crime 100% anonymously by calling 0800 555 111 or using our non-traceable online form at crimestoppers-uk.org Crimestoppers is not an emergency service and in the event of an emergency, you should always ring 999.

North Weald Raced for Life On a beautiful evening on Wednesday 12th July, 1000 people and their supporters visited North Weald Airfield to race money for Cancer Research UK. The event was the annual Race for Life event. Myself (editor), Sarah my sister-in-law and two of my daughters joined in and walked the 5k and we have raised nearly £300 which is fantastic. For personal reasons, this is a cause close to my heart and I did find it very emotional especially when they were talking about the future and how Cancer Research UK could provide sufferers with a better prognosis. I know this is fantastic news—it is just sad that my mum who is currently not fighting secondary bone cancer that it is too late for her and others. However, we enjoyed the weather and the surroundings, dogs walked patiently, children ran on knowing they were safe and the atmosphere was great. I even managed to down half a pint of beer bought and saved for me from the Squadron bar which gave me a little boost. The event raised over £35,000 for Cancer Research UK at this year’s Race for Life. The Epping Forest District Council Chairman Councillor David Stallan started the race with a heart-felt speech. The theme was pink, with many participants wearing placards with the names of friends and relatives on, remembering those who have suffered from cancer.

HANDY MAN VACANCY

Going away on holiday ?

2 days per week

DRIVER VACANCY 2 or 3 days per week until Oct 2017 Transit van, light loads. Some early starts. (delivery to Local, South East and Notts etc) Both jobs are based at local warehouse in Nth Weald For further information please contact email: john@prestopets.co.uk (Payment P.A.Y.E.)

Are you going away on holiday or even out for the day? Essex Police offer hints to make your home look like someone is still living there. • •

Ensure that windows, doors and gates are closed and locked correctly. Use automatic timer-switches to turn your lights and radios on when it goes dark also consider “Fake TV”. If you have an intruder alarm make sure that you set it before leaving and ensure that your neighbours know who the keyholders are.

Cancel any newspaper or milk deliveries.

Use the Royal Mail's 'keepsafe' service - they keep your mail for up to 2 months while you're away. Mail sitting on your doorstep is a sign that you are away.

Trusted neighbours may be able to help you by collecting your post, opening and closing curtains and they could park their car on your driveway.

Avoid discussing holiday plans on public social networking sites - burglars can use any information you post on there to their advantage - I would add to this watch what you are posting while you are away too or you may find you are giving useful information that the burglar or fraudster may use.

The Police UK website has useful advice and details of crimes in your area—https://www.police.uk/crime-prevention-advice/burglary/

EFDC Cabinet meeting update At the Epping Forest District Council cabinet meeting held on 15th June, they discussed many aspects affecting the area. Next (including a Costa Coffee), TK Max, Aldi, Hobbycraft, Pets at Home and Smyths Toys have been confirmed among the tenants of the new Epping Forest Shopping Park, Loughton. Councillor Anne Grigg made the announcement at the meeting of Epping Forest District Council’s Cabinet on 15 June. Construction of the retail units is nearing completion with the supporting highway improvements due to finish in August. The Council expects handover on 19 June with the start of shop fitting starting a week later. The park will also set high green transport standards in Essex with 10 electric charging points. Proposed masterplans covering areas in Epping, Waltham Abbey, Loughton, North Weald, Ongar, Chigwell and sites around Harlow will be produced as Epping Forest District Council works towards the implementation of the new Local Plan. The need for strategic masterplans to ensure development and infrastructure requirements across groups of sites in the same area was outlined in a report presented by Planning Portfolio Holder John Philip. Councillor Philip explained that it was necessary to show the governmentappointed inspector that the Council is taking steps to ensure that growth can be delivered in a coordinated way with necessary infrastructure provided. He emphasised that this does not mean any sites will definitely be in or out of the final Local Plan or that planning approvals have been decided or approved. No definitive decisions have as yet been taken on which sites will be included in the final draft of the Local Plan. Cabinet approved proposals to allocate the Homelessness Support Grant. Councillors supported the recommendations by Housing Portfolio Holder Syd Stavrou to allocate £60,000 to Genesis Housing Association to provide private sector accommodation, and £29,000 to the young parents scheme at Railway Meadow in Ongar. Further allocations will be made as additional reports come to Cabinet.

Helen Gould from The Red School, Queen’s Hall, School Green Lane, North Weald would like to say a huge THANK YOU to the children who recently took part in a Sponsored Nursery Rhyme Event and raised nearly £500 The monies raised have been used to purchase new resources for the whole environment. I would also like to wish 8 children going to schools in North Weald and Fyfield good luck and my very best wishes as they leave us to go to “big” school. It is always sad when we have to say “Goodbye” but I look forward to September when we welcome the new intake ready to start all over again! Finally, my thanks to the hardworking staff whose dedication, knowledge and support make The Red School a fun place to be! Helen

St Clare celebrates official launch of new Children’s Bereavement Service St Clare Hospice celebrated the official launch of their new Children’s Bereavement Service at an event held at the Hastingwood-based hospice on Tuesday 20th June. The launch event was attended by more than 50 supporters, including special guest Jeff Brazier, television presenter and regular part of the ITV This Morning team, who delivered the key note speech. Jeff Brazier, television presenter and life coach, addressed the gathering. Jeff, whose debut book ‘The Grief Survival Guide’ was published at the start of June 2017, is a supporter of the hospice and consulted their bereavement team during the writing of his book. The impact of bereavement in childhood has been an issue close to Jeff’s heart following his experience of raising his two sons, Bobby and Freddie, after the loss of their mother Jade Goody who was cared for at St Clare Hospice in 2009. Commenting on the launch of St Clare’s Children’s Bereavement Service, Jeff Brazier said: “It is fantastic that St Clare has secured funding to launch this vital service for the children and young relatives of those they care for.” Joanna Petts, the Patient and Family Support team manager, said: “Every year we see more young patients with young families, needing our care. It is vital that we are able to offer the specific support that children need when experiencing the loss of a loved one at St Clare. Losing your mum, dad or loved one as a child can affect you for the rest of your life, so it is vital that St Clare provides this support to complete the circle of care for the whole family.” The new dedicated bereavement service for children and young people will enable the charity to expand the current bereavement service delivered by their Patient and Family Support team, serving patients with life-limiting illnesses, and their families, across West Essex and the borders of East Herts. The specialist children’s bereavement service will provide a range of services to support the relatives and friends of all those who have been cared for by St Clare.

The Children’s Bereavement Service has been funded by a major grant from BBC Children in Need and bolstered by additional gifts from Clara E Burgess Trust and Charles S French Trust. For more information about St Clare Hospice’s Bereavement Service contact the Patient and Family support team on 01279 773742 or visit: www.stclarehospice.org.uk/care/ support-families

Hundreds join the Midnight Walk party in support of St Clare Hospice! Nearly 400 neon walkers from across West Essex and East Herts came together to ‘light up the night’ and dance in the streets in support of St Clare Hospice’s Midnight Walk on Saturday 1st July at The Water Gardens, Harlow. Luminous pink and green outfits set the streets of Harlow aglow at the neon-themed event as walkers of all ages came together to support the biggest fundraiser in the charity’s calendar. Setting the party atmosphere on the night was Heart Radio DJ and Drivetime lead, Matt Mackay, who performed a lively set of popular feel-good tunes, accompanied by energetic and glow-stick fuelled warm-up provided by dance-themed exercise class Clubbercise. St Clare supporters, clad in fluorescent attire and adorned with luminous accessories, proceeded in a vibrant parade on both a 5k and 10k route, setting off at 11pm. Participants were cheered on at the 1k mark by local fire-fighters from Essex County Fire & Rescue Service at Harlow Central Fire Station, making for an encouraging show of support. The event organiser, Jamie Hooper, St Clare Fundraising Development Manager, said: “The local community has once again stepped up in support of its local hospice charity, for another year running, with an amazing party attitude. ‘ ‘This year our Midnight Walkers did the Hospice proud – turning up in droves to support our biggest event of 2017 and helping to raise thousands of pounds of vital funding so we can continue providing our incredible care.” Amongst the walkers this year was student nurse at St Clare Hospice, Lydia Straker, who is currently working on the St Clare Inpatient Unit. Lydia set aside her nursing uniform for the night and pulled on her neon get-up in support of the hospice, walking the 10k route with a group of friends in 1 hour 45 mins. The first people across the finish line were Mona Singh (33, Harlow) and Sarah Ayling (36, Harlow) who walked the 5k route in 55mins. Mona and Sarah work together at local Harlow children’s charity, Barnado’s, and wanted to take part in the Midnight Walk as a way of supporting another local charity. First back from the 10k route were brothers Lewis and Myles Leverington-Poole from Harlow, 30 minutes. The pair took part with their mother, Marianne Leverington, and were walking in memory of their two Great Nannies. It is hoped that the event will have raised £60,000 once all sponsorship money has been collected – enough to fund the Inpatient Unit at St Clare for two weeks. Tel: 07814 863955

Defibrillator for Parish Hall, Thornwood Common A defibrillator has been installed at the Parish Hall at Thornwood Common. This was only made possible thanks to fundraising events held by Thornwood Seniors and The Sunday Lunch Club, collection boxes around the village and a donation by North Weald Bassett Parish Council. The defibrillator is now in service, and a demonstration was given at the Epping Forest District Council Safety Awareness Day which was held in the Parish Hall on Friday 14th July,

Animal Troughs There have had reports of damage being caused to water supplies to Cattle Water Troughs. This has caused the water to stop flowing and subsequently the cattle going without water.

This obviously can cause harm, or death to the cattle, especially in very hot weather. If you see such damage, please contact the farmer, Police or RSPCA.

Sun shines on St Andrews School Despite the cloudy start, the sun came out and shone on the families who came along the local St Andrews School Fete on Saturday 8th July. The Arena was full of events, the welly-wanging contest for both children and adult proved popular, so did the tug of war between adults and children but there was no contest the throw the sponge at the teachers including the Head Teacher Julie Lorkins was extremely popular with children lined up taking many goes. The ponies did very well despite the hot weather and children loved the rides. Well done to everyone for a good day.

f you have any information about anyone causing damage to farm equipment please contact Essex Police on 101 or online, thank you. PC 677 Long, Rural & Heritage Crime Officer

Dancing in North Weald The Dance Factory recently had their show on 17th June at Epping Hall. A funky dance show took place together with a choreography competition which saw lots of pupils winning medals. All the children really put on a great show, all their hard work paid off and Mandy, the Dance techer was just as proud as the parents!

They also raised £33 for St Clare Hospice and £33 for Motor Neurone Disease research. The photo shows the children after they had performed their ‘Domino’ routine at the St Andrews School Fete which took place on 8th July.

LETTER

PET FEATURE This month’s pet feature is dedicated to Tilly. Tilly is a rag doll cat and lives in North Weald along with Debbie, Tony and Jack. Tilly and her sister Jessie came to live with them 7 years ago after a visit to Chestnut cat sanctuary. Tilly loves being outdoors and is really very friendly and affectionate. Thank you Debbie for sharing Tilly’s photo with us.

Dear Editor,

I love cats and dogs and always see dogs chasing cats. However, on the corner of Thornhill coming from the pelican crossing end; as you approach the first bend by the hedge 2 cats - one Ginger and the other Tabby have a different idea for the dogs approaching. I was walking along when my dog barked at 2 cats - she was on the lead - I pulled her back but the cats pounced on her together and my dog ended up with several puncture wounds and a course of antibiotics. Me with several bruises as I was trying to pick her up but fell over in the process and got a cat scratch. I was shaken and tried to laugh it off. I wrote a letter and approached the owner who could only think that the cats were being protective of the corner and were scared as the dogs came around the corner. I know now that 5 other dogs have been attacked on the same corner. All those dogs are extremely placid - a few have been pinned down and one had its face attacked. The Ginger one seems to sit and smirk after. It's a walk I've done for the past 10 years. 2 ladies and 2 dogs were walking together - fortunately one of the ladies could pick her dog up as the cats were on the other dog. One of the dogs was a puppy. I wouldn't want a little old lady/man walking on that corner and that to happen. It wasn't until I heard about the other dogs otherwise I wouldn't have bothered. Concerned of North Weald

Please send in your photos of your pets, I would love to feature other local pets and share them with readers.

Thornwood Fun On Sunday 26th June, many people visited the Thornwood Village Festival. Amongst the fun was a very popular Dog Show taking centre stage in the Arena. Many dogs and the "Best in Show" dog was awarded to a Pug called Thyme aged 19 months. The weather remained dry and warm, many people enjoyed the Bbq and refreshments that were available. Representatives from North Weald Bassett Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group were on a stall and this was the first event they had attended to meet with local people to increase awareness of the role and importance of a Neighbourhood Plan for the parish of North Weald. Well done to everybody who organised this years event, it was a great event—as always.

Community garden volunteers start second year with 'Pull A Weed' slogan Volunteers who work on the community garden in front of the parade of shops in North Weald High Road have seen the project enter its second year by launching the slogan 'If you feel the need - pull a weed'. North Weald Bassett Parish Council vice-chairman Alan Buckley said: "Over the last 12 months the floral displays have matured and turned the area into a very attractive centrepiece for the village.

"A lot of hard work has gone into the maintenance of the garden during the year with weeding and seasonal planting and again I would like to thank our volunteers - George Mulliner, Margaret Mulliner and Daphne Buckley - for all their help during the year. The garden is being sponsored by Stuart Poulton - The Family Funeral Directors; GreenAcres Woodland Burials, Davis Homes estate agents, Cinnamon Indian Restaurant and North Weald Bassett Rural Preservation Society. Mr Buckley added: "Many residents have commented on the garden and we are very happy for any offers of assistance. "Keeping the area tidy is an ongoing task so may I invite any passers-by to participate in our garden slogan - 'If you feel the need - pull a weed'."

August Gardening Hints I always think that August is the month you begin to reap the rewards of the hard work, when you start to harvest your fruit and vegetables. Nothing beats the taste of home grown carrots, runner beans, lettuce, potatoes, tomatoes, cucumbers etc. If you have soft fruit ripening you will need to cover with netting to prevent the birds feasting before you get time to harvest. Watering is very important at all times but it can be critical in July/August. Plants in pots, baskets and containers will need watering everyday, this means nutrients within the soil will keep the plants healthy and continually being leeched out. So it is very important to feed your containerised plants. For flowering seasonal basket and bedding plants, always use tomato feed or Miracle Gro general purpose. For more long term plants in pots like shrubs etc then top dress with a slow release feed. This product will feed for up t o six months. If you are in any way confused over various feeds come into the Garden Centre and I will endeavour to explain in clear simple terms. To encourage your plants to continue to flower its important to dead head all flowers that are finished. Dead head roses, this will encourage a second flush later in the season. For those of you that have Rhododendrons and Camellias, its very important to keep these well watered throughout the summer. Next years flowering buds are forming, and if allowed to dry out will result in poor flowers or indeed often no flowers on next years plant. Cut back hard perennials that have finished flowering. With some especially delphiniums this will result in more flowers a little later in the summer. Prune Wisteria to within 6 leaf axis of the main stem to encourage maximum flowers next year. Cut back Lavender that has finished flowering to prevent it from getting straggly and woody. Now strawberries have finished fruiting you can replenish new plants by lifting and potting the runners. If you press them into a pot they will root quickly and easily. Keep the side shoots pinched out on tomato plants and keep them staked and watered. Try to prevent them drying out as this causes cracked sin and blossom end rot, turning the base of the fruit black. Keep on top of the weeding and hoeing to prevent weeds from flowering and then spreading their seeds to all posts of the garden. As weeds appear in the lawn deal with them straight away by spraying with lawn weed killer. As always take time to sit back, relax and take in the sights, sounds and smells of your garden with a drink of your choice. I was going to say a nice cold beer but I have accused of encouraging drinking by certain residents and cucumbers (unfairly I think) so it will have to be a cold lemonade! Uch! Followed by a beer—most definately! Cheers! Source: Nigel, Art Garden Centre, Vicarage Lane.

New National Lottery/Sport England funded artificial green. When the original artificial surface bowls green began to show signs of irreparable wear, members of Bantham & Ongar Bowls Club began to investigate a replacement. The loss of the green in Weald Bridge Road would mean the end of the North Weald based club and the closure of an important sport and social hub in the Epping/Ongar area of West Essex. That was back in the autumn of 2014. On Friday 9th June with the help of a successful 'Inspired Facilities' Sport England Lottery Grant the club's new green was opened. The Ceremony was performed by Mark Cohen, President of Essex County Bowling Association. Guests were treated to an exhibition bowls match between English International Mark Royal, currently ranked 13th in the world and 21 year old Keiran Clinton, from Scotland who already holds over 10 international caps. Both players excelled on the new green and Keiran delighted spectators, getting a toucher with his first bowl. In the end it was a Scottish win, both players were impressed with the green, Mark commenting that it was the best artificial surface he could remember playing on throughout his whole career. Before cutting the ribbon to open the green, Mark Cohen gave an inspiring speech, talking about the future of bowls and the relevance of the artificial surface to the modern game. On behalf of the club, the Honorary Secretary, Sue Czuba, thanked all those who had worked to secure the funding for the green. After the speeches, twelve bowls club took part in a triples competition sponsored by Daniel Robinson & Sons, Funeral Directors. The clubs from across the county, Burnham to Chingford, enjoyed playing on the new green under mostly blue skies. After the games, players and visitors relaxed in the club house with tea, cakes and drinks from the bar. Seamus Setterfield, on behalf of the sponsors, then presented prizes of hampers to the top three teams, they were 3rd -Falcon Bowls Club (Chelmsford), 2nd - Stock and Buttsbury Bowls Club (Stock) and 1st Halex Bowls Club (Chingford). Bantham and Ongar Club Captain, Francis Czuba, described the day as a great success, he said 'Our new green played well, both club players and professionals complimented us on the excellence of the playing surface. It was wonderful to see local politicians supporting community sports activities and showing such an interest bowls, particularly as many had been up late the night before because of their involvement with the general election. We're also very grateful to Sport England and the National Lottery for their support.' He added " Perhaps things can be best summed up in the way one visitor described the day 'perfect, the best bowls event she had ever attended, perfect green, wonderful food, brilliant bowls, the two professionals as superb, great entrainment, lovely atmosphere and surroundings and a really warm welcome.' I hope this will encourage more people to join our club and take up bowls"

Missing Days I’m so very sorry if I missed a few editions, But June had me locked away. In a place that removes your body parts, Even if you're good during your stay. Unfortunately she’s going to do it all again As apparently they didn’t take enough, So their going to bring me back in To remove yet more stuff. I probably wouldn’t mind so much if amongst all the scars And luke warm dinners, If I would have lost some weight and looked thinner. Although with a bit of luck, with this second visit I would have finally served my time, While once outside, giving me a chance for reflection And to work out which bits are still actually mine. Only jesting, as these op’s will hopefully change my life, Hopefully giving me back the ability to spend time with the kids And make more fuss of my wife. 19 years I’ve had to endure a painful disease on my arm, When finally someone comes along And tries something completely different By grafting half of my leg onto my arm. Firstly I’d like to thank all of you out there for your support When I was feeling so low, And the love from all my family Even if at times I didn’t let it show. So if you see me out—please say hello, As I’ve been kept in a room which was driving me mad, And a friendly face could with a lovely chat Make me feel not nearly so bad. Source: Andy—resident poet. CHURCH CHAT—St Andrews Church As promised, here’s the first of a series of “Church Chats” about the three Christian rites (or services) that mark the key moments in our life: birth, marriage and death. This month I’m thinking about baptism (also known as “christening” – an Old English word that means exactly the same!) Most readers over the age of 30 will have attended a baptism, and most readers over 50 will have been baptised themselves, perhaps in St Andrew’s Church here in North Weald. Up until the 1960s it was still a matter of social convention in England (unless you actively followed another religion) that your children were baptised, even if you never went to church normally. That’s all changed in my lifetime and that’s probably a good thing: Christians think baptism is important and it wouldn’t be right to do it if you had no intention of engaging with the Christian faith at all. Those today who ask me to baptise their children (the normal situation) or even being baptised themselves as adults have made, if you like, a positive decision to do it, rather than simply doing what others expect. But what’s it all about? Well, there are lots of symbolic things in a baptism that represent a key idea about the Christian faith. The best known is, of course, a sprinkling with water at the font (in some churches you get dunked in a pool or even take to the sea or a river – though not so commonly in Essex!). And this represents, for a Christian, a “washing” from sin and a new start as a member of the Church, the family of Jesus. One of the key things that you must declare before being baptised is “I repent of my sins” (the others, in the form of service I use, are “I turn to Christ” and “I renounce evil”)- remembering that “sins” are separate us from God and our neighbour. And in case you’re wondering, even tiny children (who may seem far too small to have deliberately sinned against anyone!) the things that we do that share, with human beings of all ages , that innate human tendency turn away from God and only be interested in ourselves. (That can be quite a complicated discussion and I’ll be glad to talk to anyone about it, or indeed any other aspect of baptism). At St Andrew’s we use two other symbols – firstly, an anointing on the forehead with oil that’s been blessed by the bishop in the Cathedral at Easter, which stands for our part in the great community of the Church across the world. And then those who are baptised are also presented with a candle, to represent Jesus “the light of the world”. They carry the candle out of church (probably not lit if they’re babies!) to show that, as new Christians, they carry the love of Jesus out into the world where they work, rest and play- we don’t stop being Christians at the church door. Those who are baptised – or parents and godparents who speak on behalf of small children- also promise, with God’s help, to try and lead a Christian life and “to take their part in the life and worship of Christ’s church.” There’s plenty more I could say, of course – Christians get baptised because Jesus himself (like many Jews of his day) was baptised to show a desire to make a new start with God. We’ve been reflecting on the meaning of baptism for 2000 years so there’s rather more to say that I can really fit in here! But crucially – if you live in St Andrew’s parish you have a right to be baptised at St Andrews after appropriate preparation, and it’s a journey that I go on with people with a great deal of pleasure. So, if having read this you want to know more, or even take the step of being baptised yourself, please let me know. With best wishes to you all, Fr James (jwerodley@yahoo.co.uk or 01279 451065) Page 30

Prostate Cancer – No Symptoms! Did you know that 1 in 8 men will get Prostate Cancer in their lifetime? Cancer, the word in itself is frightening, but it needn’t be – if caught early. Are you awoken in the night with a need to urinate one or more times? This doesn’t necessarily mean you have Prostate Cancer. As men age the Prostate gland gets larger naturally and can press on the bladder thus causing the need to urinate. However, it is most unwise to shrug it off without getting checked. There are no symptoms or pain to indicate Prostate Cancer. A simple blood test can reveal all. An enzyme in the blood, given off from the Prostate, called PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen), will be shown if cancer is present. The pathology department at the local hospital will analyse your PSA and report to your Doctor who will then contact you and suggest that you have further tests. If it is discovered that you do have Prostate Cancer there are many treatments available. If it is found early, chances are of up to 95% cure rate. Our local hospital, St Margaret’s in Epping, have a dedicated Prostate Cancer clinic and also a brilliant support service called ProActive, where past Prostate Cancer patients meet in a relaxed and informal setting at the hospital once a month to give support to newly diagnosed patients. This support service is attended by patients who have each had a different treatment and are eager to put your mind at rest as to what happens before and afterwards. You are then able to make an informed decision as to which of the many treatments you prefer. Please do not delay. The earlier you do this the more chance of a cure. Men – If you pee in the night ask your Doctor to arrange a blood test. Ladies – Please encourage you partner to have a simple blood test. There are no symptoms or pain to indicate Prostate Cancer. Be Vigilant

‘INSIDE OUT’

Another scam to be aware of. Police are warning members of the public to be vigilant after reports of rogue traders fleecing people out of thousands of pounds to fill in potholes.

PAINTING, DECORATING, PROPERTY MAINTENANCE

According to numerous reports, the group claim they have tarmac left over from a previous job and can fill in the holes on private land for a fee. Sgt Paul Downes said: “If you are approached by someone offering to fill in potholes I urge you not to agree to the work.

QUALITY WORK AT COMPETITIVE RATES REFERENCES ON REQUEST FOR A FREE QUOTE CALL JOHN ON 07714 284306 (BASED IN BLACKMORE)

“The group lays a strip of tarmac and are charging, in some cases, several thousands of pounds. “They are also threatening violence if you refuse to pay.

North Weald Cricket Club News The club junior section welcomed special guest from Essex Graham Pryke at the beginning of July, who presented a prize of a signed Ashley Giles international shirt that he actually wore in competition (it had been washed since!!).

“The work is of poor quality and the prices are way above average for this work.”

Following the good start reported last issue, the club has consolidated it's position and is within striking distance of the top spot, and in the key match against High Roding who were top, the club hit 313 for 6, winning by 75 runs as they could only reach 238/8 in reply. Captain James Ward mentioned that the recent addition of a class wicket keeper and others has helped bring the team strength back up to the levels seen before the departure of earlier key players. He added we are not complacent and are always looking to bring in players at all strength levels so that we could possibly return to the days of putting out multiple teams at the weekend. Along with more frequent midweek teams. Chairman Vince Curren had a near miss when he was out LBW on 99 at a recent game with Harlequins, having batted superbly throughout, he attempted a slightly risky sweep shot that alas he missed, ah well c'est la vie. Just to demonstrate the club's strength in depth, for the match against Harlequins, the opposition were a couple short, and not only did the club lend them a couple of players, but probably the club's leading players too in Jacob Ellis and James Ward who have both been in illustrious match winning form over the course of the season. They didn't let Harlequins down either top scoring for them too. The remaining Weald players just crept over the line though to win the match.

New cricketers of all standards are always welcome and can contact club secretary Ross at ross.haworth@hotmail.co.uk to get more information. Junior fun sessions for 5-11 year olds are finished for the holidays now, but bookings permitting will restart indoors soon.

BIRD FEATURE - AUGUST 2017

Hello. Here is the bird feature for August 2017. As always the article is being written during the middle of the preceding month so any details of sightings are current up to mid July. From our point of view August is the peak of the holidays with children off school and families off to destinations both in the UK and abroad. In terms of birds this is a month that represents a transition from the breeding season to autumn, with this year's young dispersing and summer visitors starting to feed up ahead of their forthcoming migration. Of course it is not as clear cut as that with some species making later breeding attempts and some species migrating earlier than other species. For instance whilst Swallows and House Martins will linger for several more weeks - indeed some individuals will be around well into autumn - by the end of July there will be Swifts leaving the UK and sightings will quickly become fewer and fewer as this species is always at the vanguard of outward migration. As August progresses you have a better chance of seeing some species in gardens. For example Chiffchaffs and Willow Warblers tend to turn up more frequently in gardens as the young disperse and the adults forage for insects and berries as they look to feed up before commencing their southward movements. If you hear a loud 'weet' or 'hweet' call then that means there is one of these warbler species on the move through the foliage although they are very similar looking and often it is only the subtle difference in their calls that enables you to determine which species is involved. For those of you with access to a computer there are various sites that have sound recordings of different bird calls and these can provide a good way of getting to know various species. You may well notice some flocks of species such as Starlings, tits, crows etc which will include juvenile birds. Young Starlings have a much browner look than adult birds and in fact can be a a source of confusion with people not realising that they are actually Starlings but a different species entirely. Incidentally if you go to Spain for holiday this year you may not realise that most of the Starlings you see are Spotless Starlings rather than the species we get in this country and the name says it all. What has been about our area ? Well I have seen quite a few Bullfinches, including some young and my impression is that this species is doing quite well around here. This species has long been controlled as they are notorious for attacking the buds of fruit trees in the spring and orchard owners will eradicate them when possible. For many years this has kept Bullfinch numbers artificially low. Male Bullfinches are a beautiful mix of red, black, grey and white and are a welcome sight although they tend to be wary and will quickly fly off when approached. There have been a couple of further sightings of a Red Kite which is a species that is seen more regularly around Essex and autumn could see further individuals around as young birds disperse from their stronghold in the Chilterns. They have forked tails and a more bouyant flight than the more familiar Buzzard so you should be able to differentiate them if you are lucky enough to look up as one flies over. I have noticed quite a few Yellowhammers locally, mostly in the hedgerows of the quieter lanes to the east of the village and just one or two within the edges of the village itself. Males are a gorgeous mix of yellow and brown and are generally seen singing on top of bushes, telegraph wires etc. Pressure on birdlife comes in all sorts of ways. Loss of habitat - such as changes in farmland - can severely restrict food and nesting sites, plus pressures produced by house building on land that has previously supported a good range of wildlife. Luckily the days of major poisonings by chemicals such as DDT in the 1960s are increasingly less common although authorities still need to be vigilant. There are still individuals that target wildlife with for example Peregrine nests targeted because the chicks are a valuable commodity for falconry in the Middle East. There are even raids on gull colonies as their eggs can be a delicacy for restaurants. These are money driven activities but there are still people who for example make their own collections of pinned butterflies for their own satisfaction with the rarest species the most highly prized. Study after study shows that preserving the biodiversity of the countryside is essential for the general welfare of both natural history itself and food production. In the report for July I mentioned that I would try and identify more wildlife particularly insects. I have noticed all manner of beetles, spiders, flies etc but the vast majority have eluded my attempts to positively identify them in books or on the internet. Indeed I have noticed a wide variety of hoverflies but I didn't realise there are almost 300 different species of them in the UK. As they all seem to be small and buzzy with black and yellow markings I have found it impossible to actually pinpoint the types I have seen. I will keep looking but apart from dragonflies which are bigger and more obviously marked I think I will struggle to draw up any sort of accurate list of what I have spotted. If you feed the birds in your garden then just a reminder to keep any feeding station clean, avoid a build-up of uneaten food which can quickly become mouldy and present a hazard to the birds and also to any people handling the feeders. It can be a good idea to move feeders and bird tables from time to time to stop bird droppings accumulating underneath. Fresh water is also a bonus for wildlife so if you can supply this then do so but again always consider cleanliness and freshness. The weather is likely to be nice and warm over the next few weeks so if you are out and about keep your eyes and ears open, there is a good variety of wildlife with a short distance of the village and you just never know what might fly over or scuttle across the ground in front of you. Enjoy. All the best, Paul Corbet. Page 34
