Who needs to visit overseas for beautiful summer weather with blue skies when we have it right here at home. We have been so lucky with our summer already, although we are badly equipped to survive this. Our grass looks like we live in the Sahara as someone said to me recently, they are so brown and water is running out in areas although luckily not in Essex I believe (at the moment). I am hoping the weather continues for some or most of the school holidays. How much easier it will be for families to enjoy days off and not spending the earth. I remember enjoying picnics, going for long family walks with the dogs, setting up dens in the garden, camping in the garden, water fights, going to the seaside and building sand castles with my girls and we still do some of these even though they are teenagers and they do not have to cost the earth.

I love walking through the village early evening and seeing everybody still out and about, it just means our days are extended in the village.

I have to apologise for the absence of a poem from the resident poet again in this issue, Andy had to undergo a week of treatment in Royal London hospital and is still suffering the side effects and didn’t feel creative enough to write a poem for this issue. Hopefully he will be back for the next issue.

This issue celebrates 12 years of North Weald Village Life. I really cannot believe it. I just hope with your support and the support of advertisers, that it will continue to go from strength to strength as it is very much part of my life now. I don’t know what I would do with my time without it!! Thank you to everybody including readers, contributors, advertisers, for your support. Without you North Weald village Life would not exist. Who knows what will happen in the next 12 years. There is so much talk of development, increased crime, increased noise and us not being a village any more. Although the houses, infrastructure etc make the village, it is the people who make a community and we have a very strong one. We look out for missing cats and dogs throughout the village, if help is needed there is usually someone that can help, we have a strong and growing neighbourhood watch and we really do look out for each other. If we can continue to do this hopefully we can encourage any new residents to do the same. To give you an example of this, I recently needed to borrow a gazebo for a day and asked in my Facebook group and was delighted that so many people not only offered me one but some kind residents also offered to help me put it up. I remember moving to North Weald from a tiny hamlet in Hertfordshire with only about 12 houses, a pub, a shop and a bus that ran about four times a day to the local town into North weald. I thought it was huge compared to where I had grown up. On my very first visit, which I know I have shared with you before, I went to the Kings Head Pub and picked up a copy of the local paper to read that the headline that a tortoise had gone missing. Ok, things have changed but they have everywhere and I don’t regret a thing. I am glad I made North Weald my home where I choose to bring my family up, and have my own business. Ok I have now probably made everybody a bit sick, so will not say anymore. On this summer evening as I write this I must be feeling content and just wanted to share this. See you in the village, enjoying the weather.

Epping Forest District Public Meeting with Essex Police Many residents have questions they would like to ask the police regarding policing in our community. Already this year, we have had many home and car thefts, a knife found in the village, a car chase, theft of diesel from a local garage, damage to homes to name only a few things. There is a public meeting being held in Epping organised by Roger Hirst, being held at 6.30pm at the Civic Offices in the High Street. At this meeting, it is reported, that you will find information on the latest crime trends and proactive policing operations and have the ability to ask a question to the Senior team. Mr Hirst said: “I hold regular public meetings across the length and breadth of the county. They are a great way to hear from local communities directly and we can help them resolve community safety issues. Very often a joint approach is the answer to a problem. With a panel of experts on hand, our public meetings are a great way to find the solutions together.” Epping Forest District Council Portfolio Holder for Safer, Greener, Transport, Sam Kane said: "These meetings are a great opportunity for residents across the district to find out more about the current situation in policing and fire services in our area and to ask any questions they may have about the two services." So if you have any concerns or would like to find out about policing in our area, this would be a good meeting to attend. Sitting alongside Roger Hirst will be Jane Gardner, the Deputy Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner for Essex, and Chief Inspector Lewis Basford, Essex Police’s District Commander in Epping Forest. They will also be joined by Tony Clark, Group Manager South West Group Essex County Fire and Rescue Service and representatives from the local Community Safety Partnership.

Telephone Preference Service Scam Has anybody heard of the Telephone Preference Service? It is a FREE service in which you can register to opt out of unsolicited sales and marketing calls. Photographs: Thank you to my Roving Reporter from Thornwood for these photographs.

Now luckily I knew this, as only last week I received a call. The caller said they were calling from the Telephone Preference Service and they needed to verify my details. I asked them to proof who they were and they said how could they do this? They then preceded to ask for my address. I did not comment and said if they had my details they would have my address. They then asked how I paid my telephone bills, they said they thought it would be by direct debit. I didn’t comment. The caller then said they wanted to check my visa card details. I asked why as this was a free service. They said it was just to verify my details.

I told them I wouldn't even give them my Tesco Clubcard number and certainly not my visa card number. They hung up on me.

Local Plan Challenge The High Court has dismissed the legal challenge to the Epping Forest District Council’s Local Plan Submission Version 2017 paving the way for the Council to submit the Local Plan to the Secretary of State for Independent Examination. The Court rejected all four grounds of challenge brought by property development company CK Properties (Theydon Bois) Ltd, endorsing the lawfulness of the Council decision to approve the Local Plan for 11,400 new homes over the Plan period up to 2033. The Council’s Planning Portfolio Holder, Councillor John Philip described the Court’s decision as “good news” and the positive outcome is also seen as vindication of the Council’s approach by its Leader, Councillor Chris Whitbread. John Philip expressed his gratitude to the Court saying: “The production of the Local Plan is possibly the most difficult thing the Council has ever had to do. The issues involved in planning for growth in the District are very sensitive and, inevitably, emotions often run high, but the Court has endorsed the Council’s approach having scrutinised the decision-making process.” Chris Whitbread was also pleased. He said: “As Councillors we take a balanced view between the protection of the character of the District we love and the need to provide decent homes for local people. We burnt a great deal of ‘midnight oil’ to understand and balance complex issues while collectively studying and guiding the evolution of the Plan through workshops, meetings and engagement before making some really difficult decisions.” Councillor Philip continued: “I hope CK Properties will see the sense of the Court’s judgment, and pursue their arguments through the Local Plan Examination process, which has always been the proper place to air their concerns, and spare Council Tax payers any additional expense by resorting to the legal appeal process.”The Council’s Planning Portfolio Holder, Councillor John Philip described the Court’s decision as “good news” and the positive outcome is also seen as vindication of the Council’s approach by its Leader, John Philip expressed his gratitude to the Court saying: “The production of the Local Plan is possibly the most difficult thing the Council has ever had to do. Epping Forest Community Safety Hub opening A new joint District Community Safety Hub bringing Epping Forest District Council and Essex Police closer together in the fight against local crime was officially launched on 20th July 2018. The Council and Essex Police joined forces, together with other agencies, to create the Hub, at the Civic Offices in Epping. Guests, including Rt. Hon. Dame Eleanor Laing MP, Roger Hirst (Essex Police Fire and Crime Commissioner), Assistant Chief Constable Andy Prophet, Council Chairman Richard Bassett, and local councillors, joined Council and Police officers to open the Hub which has been in operation since the end of June 2018. The launch marks a partnership between Epping Forest District Council and Essex Police. The Hub comprises the Council’s Community Safety Team, a Police Sergeant and two experienced Police Constables all funded and tasked by the Council. The team is already working together with other partners involved with crime prevention and community safety.

The Council’s Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Community Safety, Councillor Sam Kane, hosted the Launch and said: “Over recent years there has been a sustained demand for councils to increase the use of their powers to deal with anti-social behaviour, disorder and environmental crime. At the same time, the Government has introduced significant new legislation giving police and councils effective new powers to deal with these issues. Epping Forest District Council is already making use of the new powers but enforcement is often the main responsibility of the Police, which can lead to a disjointed approach. Better coordination through the creation of this unique Community Safety Hub will prove to be revolutionary for the District.” Councillor Sam Kane said: “I believe this is the first initiative of a district council both funding and tasking police officers anywhere in the country. I am confident it will become a flagship for others to follow. The Council and Essex Police are proud of the close links that we already have. The new Community Safety Hub is a powerful demonstration of our continuing and innovative partnership working.” Chief Inspector Lewis Basford, District Commander for Epping Forest and Brentwood added: “This commitment is a fantastic demonstration of what local partnerships can do. It means more police, more problems solved, better engagement and ultimately safer communities.” Epping Forest District Council will review its commitment to fund the three police officers after three years.

The sun shines at Epping Town Show This good summer weather continued and many people flocked to the Epping Town Show on Sunday 1st July at Stonard’s Park in Epping. The event was officially opened by Town Mayor, Councillor Nigel Avey who was accompanied by Deputy Lieutenant of Essex Michael Chapman. Entry music was provided by the Epping Forest Pipe Band who also walked around the event playing at the start. The play area was swamped in children and parents enjoying a few minutes of rest in the warm weather, although I did see some of the adults on the play equipment, maybe rescuing their children but they looked to be having fun too. The fun fair rides were also very popular. The central arena held entertaining acts such as Morris Dancing, displays from local dance schools, karate and at the end a dog show. This annual event is definitely a favourite amongst local people and families. Well done to everybody at Epping Town Council for all their hard work, it was enjoyed by many. I was lucky enough to meet members from the Epping Horticultural Society, talking to existing and encouraging new members. Chase from Paw Patrol was walking around as well as of course Peppa Pig, greeting the children.

What a Grand Day! The Thornwood Village Open Garden Event on Sunday the 24th of June in aid of St. Clare’s Hospice, turned out to be more than a Grand Day, it was in fact over a THREE GRAND DAY! Nine gardens in the village of Thornwood were opened to the public from 11 am until 4 pm and with the support of the North Weald Parish Council, who agreed to have a Thornwood Allotments Open Day, with a conducted tour, opened too. The Thornwood village fete which had been running for 25 years came to a close last year the proceeds from this were in favour of our local Hospice, St. Clare and this also meant that there was the possibility of a loss of community ‘togetherness’ that we have enjoyed over the years. The idea of an Open Gardens Event in the village to support St. Clare’s and to bring that spirit of ‘togetherness’ was mooted way back last December and ‘cometh the hour, cometh the woman’, Mary West a resident of Thornwood formed a committee along with 4 other residents an idea was formed and the planning began. The generosity of local businesses has been overwhelming, the donation of quality prizes for the raffle which was held on the day, was gratifying, as was the support from those gardeners who opened their gardens for the day, a number of the gardens had food and drink, or items for sale. The day turned out to be a success in terms of the village atmosphere that was created and the funds raised for the Hospice which amounted to £3,205. Thank you to everyone who supported us, it was a GRAND DAY… Source: Pierre

St Clare becomes official University of Cambridge Teaching Hospice St Clare Hospice has been officially designated as a University of Cambridge Teaching Hospice by Dr Stephen Barclay, Senior Lecturer in Palliative Care at the University of Cambridge. The role involves both Medical Director, Dr John Zeppetella, and Deputy Medical Director, Dr Qamar Abbas, regularly teaching at the University’s Clinical School as Senior Clinical Tutors, as well as St Clare Hospice receiving Cambridge Medical students on placement at the Hospice.

Explaining the Hospice’s role with the University of Cambridge Clinical School, Dr Qamar Abbas (Deputy Medical Director at St Clare) said: “Our role as a Teaching Hospice, and as Senior Clinical Tutors, involves teaching around 15 days per year at the Clinical School, which is located in Addenbrooke’s University Hospital, on a series of four topics throughout the year. Dr John Zeppetella and I teach on: symptom management, care of the dying, ethical issues and bereavement issues. As a Teaching Hospice we will receive twelve University of Cambridge Medical Students on placement this year, as they finish their fifth year of studying and after their exams, so that they gain some clinical experience at the Hospice before starting their careers.” Commenting on the importance of teaching Palliative Care to all medical students and newly qualified doctors, Dr Abbas said: “My view is that all doctors should have experience in palliative care, early on in their career. No matter what area they go on to specialise in, whether it is as a surgeon, a GP, or in cardiology, it is so important that they have experience in caring for those who are dying, and in how to speak to patients and their families about death. Patients and their families look to us, as their doctor, to be able to guide them and answer questions about death, often not knowing who else to ask about it. We need to be confident in speaking on this topic in a sensitive, kind and honest way – and it is so important to learn these skills and have experiences with those that are dying, very early on in your career. I genuinely believe it makes them better doctors – and better in many situations where they have to have difficult conversations, not purely around death and dying.”
St Clare Hospice will receive twelve University of Cambridge fifth year medical students in 2018, and expects to take even more students in the coming years. In addition to these students, St Clare Hospice takes six newly qualified doctors each year on a 4 month placement, and two doctors who are undertaking General Practitioner training on a 6 month placement. Combined with the students the St Clare Medical Director and Deputy Medical Director teach each year in Cambridge, and on various seminars and teaching sessions at the Hospice, it is estimated that the Hospice comes in to contact and teaches more than 100 newly qualified doctors or medical students each year. For more information for clinical professionals about the services and partnership opportunities with St Clare Hospice, visit: stclarehospice.org.uk/care/health-professionals.

THANK YOU AND BEST WISHES! Helen Gould from The Red School, Queen’s Hall, North Weald would like to say a huge THANK YOU to EFDC who allowed a member of staff to collect three extra bags in the recent great compost give away. We are now growing our own fruit and vegetables for snack after converting a corner of our outside area. Also thanks to Lisa at Art Nursery who managed to find us some tomato plants along with helpful advice for our future growing. I would also like to wish 14 children going to schools in North Weald, Moreton, Epping, Coopersale, Hatfield Heath and Fyfield good luck and my very best wishes as they leave us to go to “big” school. It is always sad when we have to say “Goodbye” but I look forward to September when we welcome the new intake ready to start all over again! Finally, my thanks to the hardworking staff whose dedication, knowledge and support make The Red School a fun place to be!

Tobacco control in Essex Trading Standards have an important role to play in relation to regulating the supply of tobacco and safeguarding public health.
Not only in terms of protecting children from harm by preventing sales to under 18's, but also in ensuring tobacco products aren't advertised, placed on open sale within shops and they comply with the plain packaging and picture warning requirements. They also have an extensive programme of work dealing with counterfeit and illicit tobacco sold through shops, on-line and through other sources where we receive intelligence. They use tobacco detection dogs to locate the increasingly sophisticated methods of concealment and have extensive powers of seizure. During 2017/2018 they seized 130,180 cigarettes and 1,819 tonnes of hand rolling tobacco, which are a mixture of smuggled and counterfeit tobacco products. They are able to prosecute sellers and/or apply for revocation of alcohol licenses if the seller holds one, and they have a number of persistent sellers awaiting their Court dates. If you wish to report the sale of illicit tobacco contact Citizens Advice or 03454 040506.

Gardening Hints for August Hello residents and friends of North Weald, How can it be August already? The month where you can begin to reap the rewards of all your hard work, harvesting fruit and veg and admiring all the flowers on your gardens and those of your neighbours! It’s a good idea to net any soft fruit before the pigeons and other birds start to help themselves. Dead head your flowers regularly to encourage a longer flowering period. If you have rhododendrons and camellias then feed and water them regularly as now is the time that they will be forming their flower buds for next year, if they dry out now the chances are you won’t get many flowers next spring. During August cut back perennials which have finished flowering, you can cut them back hard. Prune wisteria to within a 6 leaf axis, this will encourage maximum flower growth for next year. When lavenders have finished flowering cut them back too otherwise they will go woody. Once your strawberries have finished fruiting plant the first runner from each plant for next year. Strawberries in general have a 3 year lifespan, the first and third year will produce some fruit but the maximum harvest will be the second year, by rooting some runners each year will give you a continuous supply of summer strawberries. Continue to remove the side shoots on tomato plants. Water your tomatoes regularly and feed once or twice a week. You can also remove some of the tomato leaves, this will enable the plant to put its energy into its fruit rather than the leaves. Dead head rose bushes to encourage more buds to form. Feed your baskets and planters at least weekly, tomato food will do the job! Watering tips... During this hot spell you will need to water your plants more frequently. Try to water either very early in the morning or better still late at night, if you water at night your plants will get a chance to soak up the water before it evaporates and causing less stress to the plants. Please ensure you’re giving enough water, a quick squirt with the hose really isn’t enough! Hanging baskets, before you water them, from underneath lift the basket with one hand so you can judge the weight, once fully watered lift again to ensure that it’s actually heavy to move. Medium size pots will take at least one full can of water, time how long it takes your hose to fill a watering can or bucket.... that’s how long you’ll need to stand there with the hose on it. It’s also a good idea to put a tray under pots where possible, water the pot fully then fill the tray with water too. If there’s any water left in the tray after an hour or so you can then empty it out to allow the plant to drain. If you’ve planted trees or shrubs in the ground over the last year then water these daily with at least a whole bucket of water. Established trees and shrubs should have grown enough root to find their own water, but if they’re looking a bit worse for wear then again give them at least a bucket full of water. Lawns- recently laid turf or seeded grass needs to be kept moist for at least 6 weeks. Don’t allow the edges of turf to dry out as the corners will curl up, leaving you with uneven grass and dead areas. Raise the cutter on your mower slightly, if you cut your lawn to short it will go brown quicker. If you want to water your lawn a quick squirt with the hose/sprinkler will do more harm than good. The water needs to be able to soak right down to the roots. So either absolutely drench your lawn or don’t water it at all. If you’re planning on using feed, weed and moss killer then I’d suggest applying it early evening and then water it in well. Keep tomato plants well watered but don’t leave them sitting in water, don’t let them dry out and once they are producing flowers feed twice weekly. In this heat our plants require more water, which means that any food you use will be used up or washed out quicker, so feed regularly. Do not allow Acer’s or any grafted trees to dry out and avoid getting water on the leaves of Acer’s. Flamingo trees and other varieties of willow trees will appreciate as much water as you can give them. Where possible avoid watering the foliage and flowers on your plants.
Be sure to spend a little time to admire your garden, whilst you’re there take some photos of your plants and baskets and share them to our Facebook page: Art Nursery Garden Centre (@ArtNGC) whilst snapping away don’t forget to have a drink of your choice, in this heat mines most definitely a nice COLD beer! Cheers. Source; Nigel Art Nursery Garden Centre Page

LETTER Dear Editor, I would like to thank all my neighbours and friends who have sent cards, flowers and wellwishes to me following the death of my husband, Norman. It is lovely to know that there is so much support here when you need it. With love from Joyce.
LETTER
Dear Editor,
RE: The garden at the parade of shops. The garden continues to mature and we manage to change the annual plants twice a year. As with previous years, the garden requires regular maintenance in terms of weeding etc., and once again I would extend our many thanks to our faithful volunteers, George Mulliner, Margeret Miullier, Daphne Buckley and Mid de Luca for all their efforts during the year. We are also grateful to our local business sponsors who have once again renewed their support and sponsorship for the forthcoming year which enables the garden to continue. Many thanks to: Davis Homes—Estate Agents Stuart Poulton—The Family Funeral Directors Cinnamon Indian Restaurant GreenAcres Woodland Burials Additionally we extend our thanks to North Weald Bassett Preservation Society who have taken over the maintenance and upkeep of the Village Green flowerbed at Wheelers Farm Gardens. We continue to receive many comments from passing residents and are always happy for any offers of assistance. Just contact the Parish office at the Library and we will get back to you. Our slogan ‘IF YOU FEEL THE NEED — OULL A WEED’ still applies and it does help. Also in this current very dry period, rather than empty a bowl of water away, put it in a bottle and put it around the flowers when you are passing by please. Also in this current very dry period, rather than empty a bowl of water away, put it in a bottle and put it around the flowers why you are passing by please. A. Buckley. Page 25

Growing from Strength to Strength Sandon Woodturners in New Enlarged premises with upgraded facilities In 2016 year Sandon Woodturners moved from Mayes lane into a purpose designed unit just down the road and in 2017 expanded into the adjoining unit. As well as increasing the demonstration and seating areas they now have a self-contained shop area adjacent to the tea and coffee bar. This provides a more comfortable area for the consumption of biscuits, or maybe a doughnut if somebody is celebrating a Birthday. Not too unlikely, as with an active membership of 90 or so members and a meeting 50 times a year it is usually a new landmark for someone. Details and dates of all activities, future program and outside event attendances are well publicised on the Sandon Woodturners excellent website, as are photos and reports of past demos. If web access is not available to you Norman or Paul are always delighted to talk to any potential visitors and will provide access details for anyone who has not been to us before. (security considerations prevent them from publicising the exact location in the press or on the website). Hard copy of the future program can also be provided by post –please ask. The programme of visiting turners reads like a who is who of well known and respected demonstrators and several of these also conduct masterclasses over a weekend visit.
Comments from visiting demonstrators suggest that SWT have one of (possibly THE) best equipped and organised clubs in the country. Closed circuit television cameras and HD LED screens ensure that all attendees can see, and radio microphones enable one to hear in detail the finer points of a demonstration. If you find it possible to make a visit the experience could be most rewarding and few can resist joining as a member for the minimal membership cost and a Saturday morning’s / afternoon’s/ or , whole day, great woodturning for the same entrance payment of £10. Annual Canvass forms arriving soon Household Enquiry Forms will be dropping through letterboxes over the next few weeks and it is essential that every home within the Epping Forest District responds by 21 August 2018. If you live at an address in the district, you are legally required to respond and we are urging local residents to do it as soon as the form arrives, to help cut down the £20,000 cost of reminders last year. The form also ensures that Epping Forest can keep the electoral register up to date and that you are able to vote should there be an unexpected election. If you’re not currently registered, your name will not appear on the form. If you want to register, the easiest way is online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote or call the Electoral Services office on 01992 564411. At the same time as registering you must also respond to the canvass form. People who have moved address recently are particularly encouraged to keep an eye out for the form and check the details. Research by the independent Electoral Commission indicates that recent home movers are far less likely to be registered than those that have lived at the same address for a long time.
It’s easiest and quickest to confirm your details online, by phone or by text. You can also let us know of any changes online. By using one of the automated response options you are helping to keep our costs down.

A Spiritual Reflection Quite a short reflection this month as we’re deep into holiday season for many! At St Andrew’s Church we’re going to be having more Family Communion services from the autumn -at least one per moth though the dates will vary (watch this column for more details). The first of the new series is on Sunday 9 th September, followed by Harvest Festival on 7th October. We start at 9.15am (so plenty of time to enjoy the rest of the day too!) and the service lasts just under an hour. It’s more informal than our usual worship, with no incense (which I know not everyone appreciates!) and some hymns that I hope are fairly well-known. I also try and explain a little of why we’re doing various things in church as we go along. So please do feel welcome to come – every Sunday, of course, but especially to our Family Communion. And watch out, too, for dates for the next Messy Church. Many of you who’ve come to St Andrew’s on a Sunday over the last twenty years will have met Richard, our organist. Richard has travelled from his home in Billericay virtually every week to play for us, but he’s decided that he’s not going to come so often from October onwards as his health isn’t as good as it was. I’m really grateful to Richard for all he’s done for St Andrew’s over the years: as I write this column the temperature outside is over 30 degrees, so it’s hard to remember just last December when Richard braved the overnight snow to come not only to North Weald but then on to my other church in Harlow afterwards! And he got home again too….

The summer is also a time of “moving on” for others: children from St Andrew’s School especially who are going to secondary schools in Ongar, Epping or Debden (or even further afield!), and others who are leaving the area completely. If any of our readers are off to pastures new over the summer, remember that the Church of England is there for you wherever you live in England – there will be a vicar for whichever town, village or part of a city you find yourselves in. They’ll be very pleased to hear from youmost clergy are delighted to make contact with those in their neighbourhood, even if people don’t especially wish to go to church all that often……because our Christian faith isn’t just about what we do for an hour on a Sunday, but how we share God’s love in every moment and every aspect of peoples’ lives. A happy and peaceful summer to you all. With best wishes, Fr James

Wildlife need water Don’t forget to leave water out for the wildlife in this hot weather. This could prove a lifeline to a visitor in your garden including hedgehogs. The recommendation is to keep water containers shallow so hedgehogs or small mammals do not fall in. Moreton & District WI News
The Moreton WI meeting was held on the 12th July in Jan's pretty garden. They opened with Alison reading the minutes from the garden meeting last year. Details of the resolutions update was distributed by Cathy to all members and it was confirmed that Alison and Cathy would be attending the resolution workshop on the 25th July. It was requested that any ideas for next years resolutions be handed in by the September meeting. Next year's AGM will be held in Bournemouth. They were pleased to receive a letter of thanks from Jane Bird, WI advisor and encouraged by her warm praise for our WI. The coffee morning is on 16th August at 10am, Garden Tearooms, Lordship road, Writtle. They were pleased to welcome past member, Kimberley Stevens, as the speaker for the afternoon. Kimberley, originally from Northern California which is home to two major wine regions, Sonoma Valley and Napa Valley. She told us that each The old rule of matching white wine with fish and white meats or red wine with red meats no longer applies. It is more a matter of taste, the accompanying sauces, method of cooking and the time of year. In spring a roast leg of lamb or BBQ salmon is better with a lighter red than a heavy red wine. On November 8th Emily Yarrow, singer and actress, will tell us about her life in show business. Our Christmas Party meeting is on 13th December, our entertainment will be Paul Clancy, a professional magician.
All meetings are held at Magdalan Laver Village Hall at 2pm. You are welcome to join us as a visitor and if you enjoy the afternoon why not become a member. BIRD FEATURE - AUGUST 2018 Welcome to the report for the month of August. A month that sees a transition from the breeding season to the start of the autumn with various species migrating out of the UK and some heading our way. As I write these notes we are still in the throes of a sustained, almost oppressive spell of hot weather. It must be approaching 6 weeks since we had any rain and there have been recurring temperatures in the high 20s and low 30s. This will have various effects on birds and their well being and their behaviour.
You may recall I previously mentioned that after breeding and in warmer weather many birds take on a more skulking lifestyle, hiding away during the hotter parts of the day and feeding at cooler times. Well in a normal year there would of course be occasional days when this applies but summer 2018 has taken things to a different level. For some birds this ongoing lack of rain can present real challenges in their quest to find food. In some ways things are worst for the familiar Blackbird which is well known for its feeding habit of pulling worms from the ground, often seen on back garden lawns. Of course having been born with a beak and not a pneumatic drill the Blackbirds are just not able to access this food source at present - the ground is too hard and the worms are staying much further down in the soil. The only way this will change will be if we have some decent rainfall. Even bigger species such as Rooks and Jackdaws which often feed by working their way across grassy areas probing for insects and grubs are not able to tackle the rock hard ground. The only comparable spell of such sustained weather that I can recall was in the famous summer of 1976 when it was even hotter, for week after week. Of course many countries, including in other parts of Europe, get these sort of temperatures on an annual basis and birds have to cope and have various adaptations and strategies to deal with the weather. Interestingly, birds have a naturally higher body temperature than many other creatures and their often very active lifestyles and high metabolic rates mean that they generate that much more body heat. Birds generally have bare skin on the legs and feet which allows greater heat loss. As I mentioned birds will be more skulking and seek shelter within the foliage of trees, bushes, hedges etc. They tend to favour thicker, lower positions as the foliage above absorbs more of the heat. If there is a safe water source then birds will utilise that, so putting fresh water in a bird bath can literally be a lifesaver for our garden birds. Some birds will use soaring to keep cool which seems contradictory as they are then exposed to the full glare of the sun but of course as they rise the air temperature starts to fall so Buzzards and other birds of prey, as well as gulls and even crows, will get higher and higher as they rise on thermals and get cooler by so doing. Using thermals reduces the energy used by the bird which again helps to keep their body temperature down. For some birds the warm weather can be a bonanza in terms of insect food although not all are able to catch flying insects. It will be very interesting to see what the experts say in due course about the effects of the weather on all sorts of wildlife, including insects. Going back to the information about Blackbirds, I have spoken to 3 or 4 people who have told the same basic story in that they have had Blackbirds becoming much tamer in their gardens, and have either targeted emerging soft fruit sources or even taken items at close quarters. Any individual birds that have not coped well with the lack of worms will become desperate for food and much more readily willing to associate humans with food sources. Young birds in particular will struggle. Remarkably only a few months ago we were talking about the weather at the opposite end of the climate spectrum so 2018 has proved a real challenge for our feathered friends. Survival of the fittest applies. What has been about our area ? In fairness there have been fewer sightings of fewer species, as explained above the birds are just not showing as readily. Swifts, House Martins and Swallows fly after insects and so remain obvious and numbers seem reasonable. Buzzards have been soaring regularly over the village and a pair of Lesser Black backed Gulls has been in evidence, even calling in classic seaside gull fashion. They have taken to flying low over the village, they are big gulls and very obvious. One interesting sighting was a Red Kite in the first week of July, very low in fact near the library before drifting towards Weald Common and beyond. As August progresses there should be plenty of younger birds about, I saw one mixed flock of Long-tailed, Blue and Great Tits and other groups of juvenile birds should be more evident as the month advances towards September. Of course one anticipates that this hot spell is going to break eventually and one can't help thinking it will involve thunderstorms with accompanying heavy rainfall which will then present their own challenges to the birds. If you are out and about enjoy your walks etc and hopefully there will be some good wildlife to spot. There certainly seem to be plenty of butterflies and moths around which you would expect with such warm conditions. So the birds may be elusive but there is always something around, just don't encounter any of the horseflies that have been biting people throughout the UK this summer. All the best, Paul Corbet Page 34
