My favourite subject—the weather. We have had some lovely bright days and we complain when the sky is grey and it rains! We really are not happy unless we are moaning are we, this is what we should have in November/December. I really hope the weather predictions are correct and we get snow and have a white Christmas! Talking to my girls, they have never seen a white Christmas so maybe this year… We have had a busy few weeks, Halloween was enjoyed by many families in the village this year which is brilliant so much better than previous years although not all areas were as fortunate, I think Epping saw a lot of trouble this year for example. Fireworks were ablaze in the village this year, there were many organised events and lots of families enjoying fireworks. Over the weekend whenever you stepped outside in the garden during the evening, the sky was alight and all you could hear were pops and bangs. I am not going to be a party pooper but some of them I feel are unnecessarily loud, I had to run out several times to make sure our rabbit had not become too scared. I do love fireworks but could not attend any events because one of my dogs is so scared, we had to babysit him. I wonder if we should follow Italy’s example, they only have silent fireworks—that would certainly answer a few problems although not all of course. I also survived Stoptober with no drinking alcohol for the whole month of October, not only did I prove my doubters that I could do (that includes my family) but also I raised over £150 for MacMillan Cancer. I am now back to having the odd drink but have definitely cut down although now the festive season is nearly upon us …….

So Christmas is fast approaching and I am taking a big gulp as I write this. Christmas—hang on what happened to Summer?
Epping,
www.northwealdvillagelife.co.uk
I am going to put my serious hat on now, we are in the midst of an Epping Forest District Council consultation called the ‘Local Plan’, how many of you have heard of this or are aware of what this refers too? I have included some information which can be found later in the magazine, but please can I ask that you read the special four page feature included in the centre of this magazine. Some of you may ask why should I bother—but now is the time to ‘bother’ as this will be the only time you can have input into the Local Plan. North Weald seems to have been targeted for major development involving a recommendation for over 1,500 homes to be built in the village but this is not set in stone, the time is now for you to have your say. So come on, if you disagree or agree just have your say. The special feature breaks down the facts and hopefully provides it in a way that you can see how it could impact on our village and how to have your say. Nag, nag, nag—but this is very important. It is not a case of ‘it has already been decided’ or ‘it is not worth me having me say’ because it really is as the consultation has to listen to all the comments provided and is a District wide consultation. So on a more positive note, Christmas is a coming, there are a number of Christmas events coming up, Andy and I are having stalls this year at Epping Market, St Andrews School Fair and Lindsey Street Christmas market event selling of course our handmade items—Wooden Dreams –www.woodenreams.co.uk (couldn’t miss the opportunity to promote us—sorry). You can find details of some of these in the magazine including invitations to the Carol Service and a Nativity event at St Andrews Primary School. I am delighted to learn of so many local people who have provided opportunities for us to help the less fortunate including the elderly, sick children and the homeless to name a few. So why not check out the feature which can be found later in this issue and donate something that I know will make someone’s day at this special time of year. For us with families and the opportunity to spend time with them enjoying some quality time it is easy to forget that there are many that are not so fortunate and remember Christmas should be a special time for all. Although there will be another issue out on 20th December, you may all be too busy to read this until after Christmas day, so I will take this opportunity to wish everybody a very merry Christmas and hope that you have a special time with lots of kindness, love and smiles.

BT Scam A resident of North Weald telephoned me recently to inform me of a scam that recently targeted her. One particular weekday in October, she received 3 calls throughout the day, by 3 different men to her landline and they all started off by saying that they are from British Telecom technical department. They informed her that her internet had been hacked by fraudulent people. When she questioned them, they confirmed her that the internet security was at risk so any emails or payments made hackers could get hold of personal details and could use these details to commit crimes. The caller also used technical and they also added that in the last 2 weeks 27 people in Essex have been affected by these hackers. The resident did not believe him and asked for his name which he said was Ricky Smith gave his employee number 0729/Bt.Rs, and he said he was calling from Nottingham. About 2 hours later, the resident received a second phone call this time he said he was from BT Technical department he was much more determined and forceful then the first guy and was quite menacing when she would not do what he said. She got one last call about 3 hours later which her daughter answered and as soon as she heard who they were she put the phone straight down. She did ring her internet provider who told me it was a scam and whatever you do, no matter how convincing they sound do not let them get on your internet as they will block your line and unless you pay them you will not be able to use your internet. He told me that two ladies had rung them and had got taken in by these fraudsters and it cost them £250 & £500 to get them to release there internet, so please be aware. Page 5

Reporting Fly Tipping The Environment Agency has issued a 24/7 Hotline to try and gain intelligence to combat the illegal dumping of rubbish also known as flytipping. If you witness or find fly-tipping or have any information about it you can now report it to the Environment Agency 0800 807060.
Reports should include as many details about the incident and type/amount of waste as possible. Some key points about if you witness such activity: * Witnesses are vitally important in enabling action to be taken against people who fly-tip waste, so please do not hesitate to report any incident that you witness as soon as possible. * Do not put yourself in danger by approaching anyone you see dumping waste; they are criminals, who may be involved in other criminal activities, and as such are unlikely to respond well to being challenged. If it is possible to observe them safely, the more information you are able to provide, the better the chances of an investigation. Information that is useful includes the following: 1. Time and date of incident; 2. Description of person(s) dumping waste; 3. Description of vehicle(s) involved, including registration numbers; Penny Cadwallader DO MRO 4. Description of the waste dumped; 5. Photographs can also be very useful, OSTEOPATH but only if it is possible to obtain them Penny has been in practice for over 29 years and is starting up a new practice safely. here in North Weald at Blakes Golf Club.
Please be reassured that any information supplied in connection to any such incident is treated in strictest confidence. If you make notes please keep them, even if they are scribbled notes on the back of an envelope. Actual notes taken at the time can be very valuable as evidence. Do not try to rummage through the waste yourself to look for evidence, as there may be hazardous or sharp items hidden among the waste. Page 9

St Clare to hold four Light up a Life services St Clare Hospice is preparing to come together to celebrate the lives of friends and loved ones – along with hundreds of local people – at a series of nine Light up a Life services being held over the festive season. Four of the services will be held in the Epping Forest area over the period. Light up a Life services give everyone, whether they have a personal connection with St Clare or not, a very special way to remember those who will be missed over the festive period and to honour their memory in a very personal way. Tanya Curry, Chief Executive of St Clare Hospice, extended the invitation to the services to the whole of the charity’s local community: “St Clare has been bringing warmth and love to the lives of people across West Essex and the borders of East Hertfordshire for more than 25 years. The care and support we offer does not end when someone dies, and our Light up a Life services are just one of the ways we continue to support people when they need it most.” “I warmly invite everyone in our local towns to join with us for one of our Light up a Life services – whether that is at the Hospice, at a service near your home, or a simple period of reflection in your own home. The events are so special, and offer precious time to pause and remember those close to our hearts, in the company of others who understand.” Four of the services are being held in Epping Forest: on 1 December in Waltham Abbey, 3 December in Epping, 3 December in Loughton and 8 December in Ongar. The service will include hearfelt readings, music and Christmas carols – offering an uplifting and beautiful way to celebrate the lives of lost loved ones. The Light up a Life services are on: Sunday 20 November, 3pm – St Michael’s Church, Bishop’s Thursday 1 December, 7pm – Waltham Abbey Church, Waltham Abbey Stortford Saturday 3 December, 4pm – St John’s Church, Epping Sunday 20 November, 4pm – All Saints Parish Church, Ashdon Saturday 3 December, 4.30pm – Methodist Church, Loughton Thursday 8 December, 4pm – St Martin’s Church, Ongar Sunday 11 December, 3.30pm – United Reform Church, Dunmow Wednesday 14 December, 7pm – St Clare Hospice, Hastingwood Saturday 17 December, 4pm – St Clare Hospice, Hastingwood The highlight of the services held at the Hospice in Hastingwood is the lighting of the tree, with each light representing the life and memory of a loved one. If you would like to dedicate a light on the St Clare tree to a loved one, and to have their name placed in the Book of Remembrance, you can do so on their dedicated webpage at: www.stclarehospice.org/light-up-a-life. You can let the Hospice know which service you are planning to attend through the webpage or by phoning the event organisers on 01279 773750. Just like St Clare Hospice’s care, participation in Light up a Life is completely free of charge. However, if you would like to make a donation alongside your loved one’s dedication, it would be so appreciated by the patients and their families. With very limited funding from the NHS, St Clare relies heavily on the support of local people. Page 10

Keeping yourself and your home warm and safe Winter weather can have an impact on your health and that of people you care about, here are some top tips courtesy of the Met Office to keep yourself and your home warm. You should heat your home to the temperature of at least 18 °C. This is particularly important if you have reduced mobility, are 65 or over, or have a health condition, such as heart or lung disease. Having room temperatures slightly over 18 °C could be good for your health. Age UK recommends that your living room temperature should be 21 °C (70 °F). If you are under the age of 65, active and wearing appropriate clothing, you may wish to keep your home at a comfortable temperature even if it is slightly lower than 18°C. Overnight, people who are 65 and over or who have pre-existing health conditions may find bedroom temperatures of at least 18 °C are good for their health; this may be less important if you are a healthy adult under 65 and have appropriate clothing and bedding. It is important to keep your bedroom window closed at night when the weather is cold and you are advised to draw your curtains at dusk to help keep the heat generated inside your rooms. Make sure that your radiators are not obstructed by curtains or furniture. You should also do the following: Open fires: sweep your chimney, use a fireguard, make sure the fire is put out properly before you leave the room. Electric heaters: keep away from curtains and furniture, and do not use for drying clothes. Always unplug when you go out or go t o b e d . Electric blankets: do not use a hot water bottle, even if the blanket's switched off. Unplug blankets before you go to bed, unless they have thermostat control for safe all-night use .
Solar Energy The installation of new windows and solar panels has led to significant reductions in energy consumption at the Council’s headquarters in Epping. The report by Technology and Support Services Portfolio Holder Councillor Alan Lion noted the generation of 35,760 KWh in the first seven months of panel operation. Electricity consumption was reduced by 13.4% in 2015 compared to 2014.
Incentive to reduce empty housing Epping Forest District Councillors agreed reductions in the Council Tax discount available for empty homes. Finance Portfolio Holder Gagan Mohindra presented the report. He said that the changes would make a relatively small difference to the amount of tax collected. However, the Council hopes that the reductions will incentivise local landlords to speed up the re-letting or sale of empty houses for occupation. Page 11

Local Parking At a recent Epping Forest District Council Cabinet Meeting, Councillor G a ry Wa l le r, P or tf ol io H ol d e r responsible for working with Essex County Council and the North Essex Parking Partnership (NEPP) assured fellow councillors that he would pass on their dissatisfaction with on-street parking enforcement across the district. Essex County Council is set to extend the current NEPP contract for a further four years. Supported by fellow Councillors Chris Whitbread and Chris Pond, Councillor Waller said that his criticisms were aimed at the operation of NEPP rather individual members of staff working within the district.
Have you heard of the Local Plan? Epping Forest District Council launched the consultation of the Local Plan on 31st October and has provided residents with six weeks to have their say on the content of this draft local plan. This Draft Local Plan sets out the proposed strategy to meet the economic and housing growth in the Epping Forest District up until 2033, identifying potential sites for development and regeneration.
Later on the agenda, Councillor Waller received Cabinet approval for three small new pay and display car parks in Debden. Two short stay car parks accommodating a total of 40 spaces are to be created at the northern and southern ends of Oakwood Hill Industrial Estate. Fifteen new long stay spaces are
It goes without saying that development will occur in North Weald, this plan outlines a potential 1,580 new homes in our village alone. The local plan outlines potential areas which has been identified for this development, some of which is green belt land. Please refer to the four page special feature included in the centre pages of this issue which provides further information on the impact of the local plan on North Weald and how you can have your say. The North Weald Resident’s Association have been highlighting information for residents via social media. There is a small display in the North Weald Library that contains some information on the local plan. The most important issue is that you have your say. The plan covers the entire Epping Forest District Area and I know that many areas are actively encouraging their residents to have their say. This is the most important time to have your say, please do not let other people decide the future for North Weald. At present it has not been fully decided on the future development of North Weald but after the 12th December you will not be asked for your input into sites and number of new homes for the village. Have you say now!

Centenary fireworks light up the skies This year there were many firework displays held locally. The first of which lit up the night skies above North Weald on Friday 5th November when the Squadron hosted their 1st firework party with North Weald Airfield. Despite the earlier rain, crowds of 4,000 gathered outside The Squadron to commemorate the Airfield’s Centenary year. They were treated to a fantastic firework display with 3 hot air balloons illuminating the display. Harlow Air Cadets helped with the parking whilst the airfield operations team together with The Squadron had extra staff on duty ensuring everyone’s safety. Many local families had a great night and thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere and the event. Billy Manning from the Squadron said ‘It was a great night that was well supported by the local community. We look forward to staging a bigger and better event in 2017.’
Local groups honoured
Seven groups in Essex were honoured at a special reception held recently to celebrate their recent nominations in the prestigious Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service (QAVS). The QAVS is a national honour equivalent to an MBE for volunteer groups. Included amongst the seven nominated groups from Essex are:Patient Panel in Harlow is a group of 20 volunteers working in partnership with the staff at the Princess Alexander Hospital to represent patient needs, especially in the ‘end of life’ care. Razed Roof in Harlow is a group of 5 paid staff and 37 volunteers who provide an inclusive performing arts group for people with and without severe learning difficulties and disabilities,. Brothers set to start Santa Dash event in memory of Mum Two young brothers who lost their mum just a few weeks before Christmas are back to start this year’s St Clare ‘Santa Dash’. The boys raised over £3,000 in their ‘Santa Dash’ sponsorship last year and are hoping to get even more fundraisers on board this Christmas to raise vital funds for the hospice that cared for their mum. Cathy Turner spent her final days at St Clare Hospice a month before Christmas 2013 and now her children Archie, 13, and Henry, 11, have decided to support the Hastingwood-based charity by kick-starting the Hospice’s biggest festive event. The ‘Santa Dash’ fun run event will be taking place on Sunday 4th December at The Water Gardens in Harlow. St Clare is encouraging people of all ages to dress up as Santa and join in this cracking Christmas event. With a 5k route option and a shorter ‘mini mile’ for young children, it offers festive fun for all the family. Archie, who is a pupil at Davenant Foundation School in Loughton, said: “My brother and I really enjoyed last year’s Santa Dash and we were so happy with the amount of money that we managed to raise. We are excited to be back and starting the race this year, and we hope that we can get an even bigger team together to help raise more money for the people that took care of mum. Mum would be so proud of us for continuing to support St Clare.” Archie and Henry’s auntie, Susy Harrison, said: “We are incredibly proud of the boys for wanting to come back again and take part in the Santa Dash in their mum’s memory. Cathy spent 10 days at the Hospice before she passed away 3 years ago, aged just 44 years. Susy Harrison said: “We couldn’t have received better support and care through such a hard time and that is why we want to continue fundraising for St Clare. We want to make sure that every family who is faced with that situation receives exceptional care, like we did. It really does make such a difference.” You can register for the St Clare ‘Santa Dash’, which is sponsored by The Grown Up Chocolate Company, by visiting www.stclarehospice.org.uk/event/st-clare-santa-dash . Advanced entry cost £12 for adults and £2.50 for children (£15 and £5 on the day). Registration for this event also includes a free Santa suit for adults and elf hats for children. Registration opens at 9.30am and the events kick off at 11.00am. You can take part in either the 5k route or 1 mile route. Both courses are suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs, and dogs are welcome.

The Epping St John's team and the teams from West Hatch High School, Roding Valley High School and Debden Park High School will be speaking for the Motion while the Chigwell School, King Harold Academy, Braeside School and Davenant Foundation School teams will speak against the Motion. Remembrance Sunday Epping Forest District Council staff, councillors and members of the public joined Chairman Jeane Lea to remember the fallen at a Remembrance Day service. Flags were lowered to half-mast as the crowds paused to observe the two minute service at 11am on 11th November 2016 outside the civic offices in Epping. Chairman Jeane Lea said: “Remembrance Day is always a very important date in our calendar. It helps us keep alive the memory of those who have paid the price for our freedom.” “This year it is particularly poignant as it marks a number of significant anniversaries including the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme and of our very own North Weald Airfield. North Weald Airfield was established in August 1916 as a base for night fighters to combat German Zeppelin airships which were bombing London and other towns.” The sun came out briefly at the Annual Act of Remembrance and Thanksgiving event held at the North Weald Airfield Memorial on Sunday 13th November. Derek Tringham, President of the Royal British Legion, North Weald branch, led the ceremony. Wreaths were laid before the Memorial. The last post was played and everybody took part in the silent two minute silence. Father James Rodley led the prayers. Many people turned out to the event, familiar and new faces.

British Classic Vehicles lineup at Buckingham On Saturday 15th October 2016 British classic vehicles with combined valuations of ÂŁ19,033,150 lined up on the forecourt of Buckingham Palace to help commemorate the 90th birthday of Her Majesty. They were inspected, on her behalf, by HRH Prince Michael of Kent.
Each of the ninety vehicles was manufactured in a specific year of her life, and represented that year. The first was a 1926 'Bullnose' Morris Oxford Tourer, the last an impressive 2016 Ford Focus RS. Among the many other superb machines on display, in possibly the best-ever gathering of British vehicles, was a 1948 Jaguar XK120 - the most famous tock competition Jaguar of all time, reg. no. NUB 120; a 1952 AEC Regent 111 - a London double-decker bus which completed a 12,000 coal, mile tour of the USA and Canada in 1952 as a s promotion for British goods and tourism; a y& 1959 Morris Mini-Minor - the first-ever Mini off the production line; the fantastic hybrid McLaren P.1. and the beautiful 2016 Jaguar FPACE. Jimmy and Barbara Waters of Thornwood Common in their 1979 Ausin FX4D Taxicab was one of these 90 vehicles. A photograph of their vehicle at Buckingham Palace is attached. The line-up included three London Taxis, four sports-racing cars, three police cars, as well as various models of Aston Martin, Austin Healey, Bentley, BSA, Caterham, Cooper, Daimler, DeLorean, Ford, Jaguar, Jensen, Lea -Francis, Lotus, McLaren, MG, Morgan, Morris, Noble, Riley, Rolls Royce, Rover, Triumph, TVR, Vauxhall, Windsor and Wolseley. The line-up was made possible by the goodwill and enthusiasm of all the owners who travelled from all over the UK - and three from Europe - to be present, and the support of both Stewart Miller & Peter James Insurance, the UK's leading specialist classic vehicle insurance broker and H&H Classics Auctioneers for the Classic Collector.

December Gardening Hints Although the weather has now turned and it's getting colder, there's still lots of jobs to do in the garden this month. Here's a few ideas to help you on your way....
clear fallen leaves from paths and lawns •prune roses to half their size
buddleja - cut back to half its size •if your rhubarb is over 5 years old now is the perfect time of year to split it
plant spring bulbs •clean up your perennial plants, cut long stems down to ground level
plant garlic (this can be done any time from now till February, however now is better as the soil is still soft enough to move, as we are forecast a harsh winter the ground may be frozen come January/February)
plant strawberry runners
Our real Christmas trees will be in stock last week of November, I recommend you buy them early and then stand them in the garden in a bucket of water. If you can leave them in water for a week before taking them indoors you'll find it will keep a lot longer, don't forget to still water them once indoors. This time of year there's not really a lot else happening in the garden, it's just a case of getting things cleaned up and ready for spring. Don't forget to wrap up warm and once you've tidied every thing up stand back and enjoy a tipple of your choice, mines a nice sloe gin and a mince pie! Cheers! with a Nativity presentation! Please do come and bring friends and neighbours, too. And also an evening for your diaries: The Village Community Carol Service – at St Andrew’s School: 6.30pm on Monday 19th December. I’m looking forward to these events and so much that’s associated with Christmas. But I think this coming Christmas is going to feel especially anxious for many more people than usual: the political instability in our country suddenly seems quite minor, after the election of Donald Trump as the next American President. The world around us seems to be going through dramatic and worrying change, and the so-called experts in government and elsewhere are, I guess, as confused about it all as we are. And the rising tide of voices calling out messages of prejudice and hate – in this land, America and elsewhere – it seems like a horrible echo of events many years ago. We’ve just marked Remembrance Sunday here in North Weald– God forbid that we too will have to go through the things inflicted on that generation. But for Christians, the “real message” of Christmas surely now takes on even more importance. For that message is, of course, nothing to do with frantic shopping, roast turkey or even jovial Santas - it’s about God’s light coming into the world in the person of Jesus, born in the Bethlehem stable. And we shouldn’t forget that the world into which Jesus came was just as dangerous, unjust and anxious as anything that we can know today. So as we sing, later this month, “Hark the Herald Angels Sing – glory to the new-born King!” we can remember that the new-born king understood – and understands - about all that causes us pain, distress and worry. Jesus, we say, lives now to show us God’s light in a dark world. And so our carols and prayers this Christmas aren’t just about remembering something that happened 2000 years ago – they’re about our own lives right now, and how God longs to share his love with us all now, just as he did then when he came to be one of us.
A blessed and peaceful Christmas-tide to you all.
I Fr James. (contact me on jwerodley@yahoo.co.uk or 01279 451065)

LETTER
Dear Editor I have read Mr. Miller's letter published in the Village Life and find that I must comment upon it - usually I take the brickbats as part of the job. As a North Weald District Councillor, I have a long history of being fully involved in defending the village against a number of unwelcome threats - e.g. from a Waste Incinerator to John Prescott's 6,000 houses on the Airfield, as well as increased development of Blake's Golf Course, with ever more importation of waste soil, increased lorry movements, dust, dirt and worry for the neighbouring residents. I have spoken out on many occasions at Council Meetings, Public Meetings, and Public Enquiries regarding these issues. Despite Mr Miller's concerns, long experience has shown that such debates tend to be won by sound argument and relevant facts - not by catchy sound-bites or by one Councillor making more noise than the others. At the Cabinet meeting of 6th October, I asked for information relating to whether the landowners at a site in North Weald had confirmed their agreement to putting forward that site, which potentially included a traveller site. Until this point, it had not been confirmed that the landowner was definitely bringing forward this piece of land. I also sought information on an amendment to clarify the difference between North Weald Village and the Parish of North Weald Bassett, which might cause confusion to residents. In my view, this was not the time to argue North Weald's case against the potential development but that it should be said at the forthcoming meeting of Full Council, when more Councillors would be present - up to 58. At Full Council on 18th October, I spoke against the potential 1500 houses being built on the Green Belt at North Weald (I was at this time totally unaware of Mr Miller's letter and criticism) and promised to work with residents to find evidence that would substantiate my argument that valuable agricultural Green Belt land should not be swallowed up by housing. As for my residency, after living in North Weald for over 20 years I moved to Hastingwood (not Thornwood as Mr Miller suggests) due to personal parking problems that could not be resolved, despite many attempts. At that time, the Electoral Ward of North Weald included both Hastingwood and Thornwood. A later Boundary Commission change removed Hastingwood and Thornwood from the Village ward, but this has not prevented me from representing the Village ward, on both District and Parish Councils, without any conflict of interest. Cllr Anne Grigg District and Parish Councillor for North Weald Village

Dear reader of north weald & possible beyond, Last magazine my entry was about lemons and thrilled it was published!!! This month I want to talk about. Trump, Clinton bil barack Michelle So this month on 8th November we can all say we witnessed a historic movement of the American political history. Trump won over Clinton and it will be something I will never forget. Clinton lost because I believe her campaign was the face of the White House with both Obama and Bill Clinton at her side constantly. With Trump it was just a rouge underdog that won, he was going against the fundamental democratic political ways. It's similar to Brexit. The American people have voiced there votes and a Trump America is the outcome. USA, USA, USA!!!!!

LETTER
Dear Editor,
I am writing in response to Mr Tony Miller`s letter in the November 2016 issue. In his letter he referred to myself and Councillor Grigg as timid in regard to the Cabinet meeting on the 6th October regarding the Draft Local Plan Consultation. I have stood and been re elected 4 times on my track record for standing up for the residents of North Weald village ward. I have challenged both the executives of all political colours and council during the 17 years I have been a District Councillor including the time I was a member of the Cabinet. I would not call myself timid when I argued the case for the retention of aviation at North Weald Airfield when under threat from the last Labour Government, I was not timid when I have fought against unsuitable development in our village. I can prove my actions with results, I am not sure what Mr Miller has done to protect our village, perhaps he would be able to supply details. I would now like to comment on the section where he refers to me as "a beneficial business proprietor". I have taken this as him implying I was timid as he believes I would benefit as a shop and post office owner from any development in the surrounding area. I have to assume Mr Miller has evidence to back this comment up. I would therefore ask him via your magazine to publically publish this evidence, and to also to supply copies to the District Councils Monitoring Officer, Ms C O`Boyle and make a formal complaint to the Standards Board. As if he does have such evidence, I could be excluded from voting on this item when next discussed. As I believe these allegations to be unfounded and no evidence held to back up this claim, I would ask Mr Miller to issue a formal public apology and withdrawn of his comments. Councillor David Stallan
LETTER Dear Editor
HOME GLAZING REPAIR SERVICE LTD
I feel compelled to pen a letter in reply to a letter published in the last issue from Mr Miller in regards to the proposed new housing in and around the village and in particular some comments made in his letter referring to a local residents with businesses and how he feels they would gain from the new build proposals. Shocked and horrified that a resident for many years of our village would point the finger and say such damming things…. Especially when the persons referred to give all they have for this village in so many ways. I have been a resident in this village for over 43 years and I have nothing but praise for these people who do so much for us in this village behind the scenes – we are not always aware of what they do and what they go through to support this village in times of need, they have given us things back that we could of lost and yet they are made to feel like they are doing wrong! I know that they will have been deeply offended by the comments written and I hope that they will see that this is NOT the opinion of the majority. I for one thank them for all they do and hope that they will continue to do what they do both in the public eye and behind the scenes to ensure that our village stays a village and the community spirit that we have only grows stronger and comments like those made fall to the wayside and we focus on what is important – OUR VILLAGE Dawn Wood Page 34

Christmas Time Wow yet another year is over, Where on earth has it all gone, I remember back when I was a kid That even a week seemed to last so long. With all that advice being said About making the most of it while your young, Though I’m sure just like me We all thought we knew better and chose to ignore everyone. Still they have all been proved right As the usual sights and sounds of Christmas have started to appear, That by itself wouldn't be so bad But for the fact it’s truly fast approaching and will soon be here. Once again up into the attic, risking life and limb just to bring down all the decorations once again, It really feels as if it was yesterday that I was doing just the same. Still here I am balancing upon the rafters just to bring them all down for that special day, Knowing full well that in a couple of weeks I’ll once again be putting them all away. As all the old comments of ‘make the most of it while you are young’ still for some reason ringing in my ear. I can virtually hear the same words being spoken to our kids trying to explain how time will go faster through each and every year. So here we are once again with Christmas knocking at the door, While all the advice we’ve given being ignored just as we had done all those years before. Still I do love Christmas and the fact you do see your families even if its for only a while, Because for most families it’s a tradition and that thought does make me smile.
Maybe time does go faster as you get older but it’s a great journey finding out, While to be honest that’s what life is all about. With most of us doing things differently if only we’d known how true time flying would be, Though looking back over my time so far I have to say its been pretty kind to me. And to get to share it all with my family By talking about the past, While laughing about the present Seems so sweet To reflect while thinking ahead. I think that finally, even a dim wit like me, Though it’s taken some time, I think that the true meaning Of Christmas I finally get. So with that thought in my head It leaves me only one thing to do, That’s to wish a very happy Christmas To each and every one of you! Source: Andy resident poet

Citizens Advice says: it’s time to save on your energy bills As the weather is turning colder, now is a good time to think about how you might save on your gas and electricity bills. Some easy checks could save you hundreds of pounds a year. Follow our three simple steps: Check you are getting the best deal from your current supplier—Switching suppliers isn’t the only way to get a better deal. Most suppliers offer discounts for managing your account online or choosing a ‘dual fuel’ deal. You should get personalised information on your bill about the cheapest tariff your supplier can offer you, and how much you can save. If your circumstances change in the meantime, call your supplier to discuss your options. Check if there is a better way to pay your bills—The way you pay your bill can also make a difference. For example, most suppliers offer a discount for paying your bill by direct debit. On average it is £100 cheaper per year to pay by monthly direct debit than paying by cash or cheque. You may also get discounts for receiving bills online, as this cuts down on paper and reduces costs for the supplier, and is good for the environment. Contact your supplier directly to find out if there is a better way for you to pay, and that might save you money. Check you are getting all the benefits and help you are entitled to—Did you know that up to £17bn in benefits and tax credits went unclaimed in the UK in 2013? That's enough to pay the fuel bills of nearly 13.5 million homes! Making sure you are receiving all help you are entitled to will make paying for fuel bills and other household expenses easier. If you've reached state pension age you may get a Winter Fuel Payment to help with winter heating costs. This will be paid in the same way your benefit or pension is paid. If you’ve not received a Winter Fuel Payment before, phone the Winter Fuel Payments helpline on 0345 915 1515 to apply. Some people who receive benefits can also get a Cold Weather Payment of £25 if the temperature drops below freezing in their local area for seven days in a row. You don't need to apply – if you are eligible it will be paid automatically in the same way you receive your benefits. The Warm Home Discount scheme is a Government scheme, whereby energy suppliers provide rebates to households on certain benefits. The rebate is £140 for 2016/17 and you should contact your electricity supplier directly to see if you qualify. Switching suppliers Shopping around for your energy supplier could save you up to £300 or more if you have never switched before. You can use the price comparison tool on the Citizens Advice website to compare prices from different energy suppliers. If you don't have internet access you can phone the Citizens Advice consumer service on 03454 040506. They will send you a factsheet with the deals available in your area. To make sure you get the best deal, you’ll need to know the name of your current supplier, the name of your current tariff, usually found on your bill, the amount of energy you use and how you currently pay, and would like to pay with a new supplier your postcode. If you are struggling to pay your energy bills, or simply want to make sure that you are getting all the financial help you are entitled to, we can help you to check that you are not missing out on any benefits or tax credits that could boost your income. You can get advice via the Citizens Advice website (www.citizensadvice.org.uk) or the Essex Adviceline – 03444 77 0808. Or you can come and see us at Loughton Library on Mondays to Wednesdays, and on Fridays, from 9.30 to 1.00, and at Waltham Abbey Town Hall on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. We hope to be offering a drop-in service in Epping very soon.
Theydon Jazz Club Lovers of Traditional Jazz will be pleased to know that the club is returning to its roots – well almost! The club was started by Dave and Sheila Dyer over twenty years ago in the famous old Thatched House pub in Epping before it became a gastro pub. Over the years the venue has changed a number of times within its Essex base as pubs have evolved and some unfortunately closed, but the good news is that on the 22 December we will have a one off Christmas (Thursday) session at Thornwood to celebrate our return to the area. From Tuesday 3 January the club will meet at Thornwood Parish Hall in Weald Hall Lane Thornwood every first and third Tuesday in the month. It is a great place for jazz with first class facilities and a large car park, and for those with the energy, an excellent dance floor. The change in venue to Thornwood will enable us to expand our membership, although guests are always welcome, and there is an attractive offer for new members for 2017 – see advert. If you like live jazz and want to support it locally we will be pleased to see you. Source: Dave Dyer Page 37

Bird Report Welcome to my jottings for the last month of 2016. As always I am writing these during the middle part of the previous month so any sightings that I mention are up to the end of the second week of November. Actually there are two quite interesting sightings to start off with. A couple of weeks back a small flock - about a dozen birds - of Ring necked Parakeets flew over the village, roughly over the library and on over Weald Common. There is reputedly a big roost in Leyton not far from the Orient football stadium - and there have been sporadic sightings over the Epping Forest area. I have previously speculated that they could colonise our area as the forest offers a green corridor for this species to spread out in our direction. Contrary to what we often think that parakeets and parrots etc are birds of just rain forests, several of the species have a natural range that includes the foothills of mountains and other cooler places. Surviving most of our winters is generally not a problem for the Ring-necked species and they have thrived in the London area since the 1970s after a few individuals escaped from captivity. One downside is that they are big, bold birds that will dominate other species for nesting sites - holes in trees - and at the bird table. I wonder if some of the flock I saw will hang around our area this winter ..... The other sighting of particular interest occurred mid-morning on Monday 7th November when two Red Kites flew over the village. It was a blustery day and they flew very slowly with dips and arcs as they made their way from the Weald Common site northwards in the general direction of the village school. At this time of year you can get younger birds that disperse from the various breeding grounds in the Home Counties. Prior to a successful re-introduction programme this very attractive species was an extreme rarity in the UK but numbers have grown year on year and there is now a relatively healthy population of them. It is still a very rare sighting in our part of Essex but so was the Buzzard at one time and now that bird of prey is regularly seen so who is to say that in twenty years or so the Red Kite can't be fairly common around here. I have mentioned before that some sightings are a question of luck and that was the case with the Red Kites. I literally popped to the back garden to put some rubbish in the bin, if it had been a few minutes before or after then I wouldn't have seen them. An acquaintance reported a possible sighting near the A414 at Canes Lane a couple of days before this. It was a long range spot and not confirmed but it seems eminently possible in view of the pair being seen a couple of days later A fairly regular bird in our area is the Meadow Pipit, particularly at the airfield and around Weald Common. It is the classic "little brown bird" and is easily missed and they are often only noticed when they take flight. I saw a small flock foraging in a damp, grassy stretch of Weald Common, at least ten in number. I didn't see them until they suddenly flew up when I was within a few feet of them. During the summer they are a common bird in upland areas and are a favourite prey of a variety of hawks and falcons - I have heard it said that when they are perched they give the impression that they know they are on the menu of a lot of other birds and always seem suitably nervous. I would expect a few to stick around our area here and there over the autumn and winter. I have seen several roving flocks of small birds, generally tit species with a Goldcrest or two mixed in. There was one sighting where the group was joined by a Nuthatch which is a very attractive bird that frequents woods. These tit flocks are generally most readily noted due to the quite loud and frequent calling of Long-tailed Tits which make their way through hedges, shrubs and lines of trees as they search for suitable food items. There also seems to be a quite large group of Goldfinches frequenting the area. I see numerous groups of half a dozen or so and they will often visit garden bird feeders, but I have also noted flocks of up to 50 or so. The Goldfinch is a quite beautiful species and their numbers seem to be on the rise over the last decade or so, certainly they are much more likely to be seen in gardens these days. Several groups of the classic winter visitors Redwing and Fieldfare have been in evidence. They rove throughout the area, particular settling near fruit and berry bearing trees and bushes. Many arrive in the UK via the east coast and disperse to more westerly locations so many of the birds we see are migrants just passing through. However in some years when conditions get colder we can get bigger concentrations and then there is more chance of them descending on suburban gardens for food.
Other flocks that will be in evidence are the old reliable regulars - Rooks and Jackdaws - members of the crow family - and also Starlings, plus lots of gulls. There are gull roosts in the Lea Valley which total in excess of 50,000 birds and we get a few hundred heading our way each day to feed in the local farmland. Remember what I have said previously - gulls aren't just Seagulls, you will most probably be able to pick out Black-headed Gulls (smaller, most numerous), Common Gulls (mid sized, with greenish legs) and also Lesser Black-backed Gulls and Herring Gulls (big, bold birds with dark grey backs or lighter grey backs). With this edition covering the festive period I can't do a report without mentioning the nation's official favourite bird - the Robin. Active later than most birds (apart from owls of course!) and out and about long before dawn in the winter, they are real survivors that can tough it out by feeding when some other species are still asleep in their roosting places. The phrase early bird catches the worm would certainly apply to the Robin. Mind you, that cute Robin that adorns so many Xmas cards is not so festive in real life, with fights to the death in territorial disputes during the breeding season. These disputes are less likely during the winter as they concentrate on survival but many of the birds we see are not native to the UK but winter visitors from harsher parts of continental Europe and Scandinavia etc. A reminder to keep feeding stations free of mouldy food and general messy build-ups and also remember that fresh, ice free water can be a life saver at this time of year too. All the best for the forthcoming festive period and as I always say, if you are out and about keep an eye out, we get a good variety of birds in our area and a quick look can be rewarded with interesting sightings.
