Today’s Game Home Opener
Series History
Mel and Carol Tjeerdsma Day
No. 3 Northwest Missouri State University opens their 2011 home schedule today against Sioux Falls who begins their first season in a transition from NAIA to NCAA DII. The Bearcats and Cougars meet for only the second time in the history of the two schools. Northwest is coming off a 65-3 win at Truman State as the Bearcats regained their firm hold on the Hickory Stick for the 10th consecutive year, the Bearcats longest win streak in the series. Today’s game presents two similar programs as the Bearcats are looking
Today’s game is the first meeting between Northwest and Sioux Falls since the late 1930’s and also marks the first of two non-conference games this season for the Bearcats. Northwest holds a 2-0 edge over USF with the last meeting coming in 1939 with a 48-0 Bearcat win. In the history between the two schools, the Cougars have never scored against the Bearcats. In addition to the shutout in 1939, Northwest posted a 65-0 shutout over Sioux Falls in the first ever meeting in 1938.
At the end of the 2010 season longtime Bearcat head coach Mel Tjeerdsma retired after 17 seasons at the helm of the Northwest Missouri State football team. Today we honor Mel and Carol Tjeerdsma for their service at Northwest and in the Maryville community. Coach Tjeerdsma finished his tenure at Northwest with a record of 183-43 (.810) and a career record of 242-82-4 (.744) in 27 seasons. A three-time National Champion in 1998, 1999 and 2009, Tjeerdsma was among the first coaches inducted into the NCAA Division II College Football Hall of Fame last December. In January 2010, he was inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame as a four-time National Coach of the Year honoree (1998, 1999, 2008 and 2009), a seven-time AFCA regional Coach of the Year, a 12-time MIAA Coach of the Year and 32 postseason wins, a NCAA Division II record. Under Tjeerdsma 44 players have been named All-Americans, including 30 first team selections and 14 players who earned All-America accolades in two or more seasons. Along with the athletic accomplishments under Tjeerdsma, 119 student-athletes have earned All-MIAA academic recognition including 80 of those players being named All-MIAA first teamers. A Look at the Cougars
to return to the national title game after being eliminated in the NCAA Semifinals last year by eventual National Champion Minnesota-Duluth. The Cougars of Sioux Falls have appeared in the last five NAIA National Championship games earning titles in 2006, 2008 and 2009; however, USF is making the transition to NCAA Division II this year and is coming off a 33-17 loss to MIAA rival Washburn.

Running Game Returns for Bearcats The Northwest backfield may arguably be the best set of running backs in the MIAA this season. With the return of All-MIAA selection, Jordan Simmons, Northwest welcomes back Billy Creason from injury and Nebraska-Omaha transfer James Franklin. Last Thursday, the combination of Simmons and Franklin only rushed for 65 yards between the two, however, the duo combined for 34 points in last week’s 65-3 win over Truman.
Along with being new to the NCAA DII ranks, the Cougars are trying to break in a new signal caller in Carrington Hanna, a transfer from California (Pa.). The Bearcat secondary will have their hands full for the second straight week, after picking off Truman twice. The Cougar’s Hanna was picked off three times against Washburn, after going 22-of-39 for 242 yards in the loss. Hanna did connect for two touchdowns, both to Jeremiah Oates, who caught six passes.

t’s hard to find a more beautiful and more accommodating facility in Division II football than Northwest Missouri State’s Bearcat Stadium. Labeled “the crown jewel of the MIAA” by the Kansas City Star, Bearcat Stadium is the longest-running continuous site for football in all of NCAA Division II. Dating back to 1913, no other stadium has played host to its team’s games for so long. First named Memorial Stadium in 1917, and then Rickenbrode Stadium from 1961 to 2004, Bearcat Stadium has seen significant improvements this past decade. The east grandstand was completely rebuilt starting in 2000. In 2003, the new-and-improved stadium was unveiled, which included an increased seating capacity on the west side, chairback and railback seating, 10 luxury suites, a spacious and functional press area and a new scoreboard, complete with video board – one of few in a Division II football facility. The summer of 2007 saw the installation of FieldTurf and permanent lighting. Contributors for the project requested the new playing surface be named after previous head coach Mel Tjeerdsma, and on June 28, 2007, the Northwest Board of Regents unanimously approved the proposal. Heading into 2011, the Bearcats are 35-2 at the facility since October 2005. The facility has seen 12 NCAA playoff contests played since its renaming in 2004 – all Northwest wins.

The Hickory Stick
S
ince 1931, the Northwest and Truman football teams have been playing for possession of a 30-inch piece of hickory that serves as the oldest traveling trophy in Division II football.
The history of the Hickory Stick dates back to 1930 when Northwest president Uel Lamkin sent Truman president Dr. Eugene Fair a piece of wood found on the very farm where Fair was born. The stick had been turned in the woodworking shop at Northwest and the lettering on the stick listed the scores of every football game between the two institutions from 1908 to 1930. The football game in 1931 was inaugurated as a means of determining who would own the trophy for the following year.
10
Homecoming After each game, the winner paints the tip of the stick in its school color. Northwest earned first possession of the Hickory Stick following its 7-0 win in 1931. The Bearcats have held the stick the past eight years and have won 13 of their last 14 games against the Bulldogs. Since 1931, Truman leads the all-time series 54-32-4 (90 games) and has held the trophy in 44 of 79 years. (Note: The two teams did not play from 1942 to 1945.)
In addition to the parade, the court and all of the festivities, there are two special traditions during Homecoming week at Northwest. The first is the induction of the latest M-Club Hall of Fame class, which includes 104 individuals and 40 teams in 2011. The second is the naming of the Don Black Homecoming Most Valuable Player Award. Don Black was a running back for the Bearcat football team from 1951 to 1953 and helped lead Northwest to an MIAA title in 1952. In 1972, the Don Black Award was presented for the first time to the most valuable player in the annual Homecoming contest. Since 1972, 36 athletes have received the honor.

Head Coach Adam Dorrel
After legendary head coach Mel Tjeerdsma stepped down from his duties in December 2010, newly appointed athletic director Wren Baker announced Scott Bostwick would take over the reigns of the highly successful Bearcat football program. However, tragedy struck June 5 when Bostwick passed away unexpectedly leaving a void at the Bearcats top spot once again.
14
Looking no further than the current coaching staff after a difficult situation, Baker appointed Adam Dorrel as the head football coach. Dorrel who served as an assistant coach since 2004 begins the 2011 season at the helm of one of the most successful programs not only in the MIAA, but in the country. The program enters the season just three wins shy of 500 (497-388-33) in its 96th. Dorrel, however, is no stranger to Bearcat football, or success. He has been the offensive coordinator at Northwest since 2007, helping lead the Bearcats to an unprecedented five consecutive NCAA Division II championship appearances and a third national title in 2009. In Dorrel’s seven seasons with the Bearcats, they have an 87-14 record and added five MIAA Championships. Dorrel’s offensive unit averaged 42 points and 474 yards per game, ranking in the top 10 nationally in four major offensive categories. The Bearcats were second in scoring, sixth in total offense, third in pass efficiency and eighth in passing. Impressive team and individual accolades have become the norm under Dorrel. In seven

seasons the Bearcats have averaged more than 40 points per game three times and more than 400 yards of offense per game five times in Dorrel’s seven seasons. In addition, 14 offensive stars have been named All-Americans under Dorrel and three of the last four MIAA Offensive MVPs have been Bearcats. Jeremy Davis in 2008 and Brett Grozinger in 2009 and 2010 were named finalists for the Gene Upshaw Division II Lineman of the Year Award under Dorrel. Currently, there are two Northwest players in the NFL who played for Dorrel. Xavier Omon is a running back for the San Francisco 49ers, and Tom Pestock is an offensive tackle for the Arizona Cardinals. Omon was originally drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the seventh round of the 2008 NFL Draft and has played for the Seattle Seahawks as well. Pestock was an undrafted free agent, signed by the Cardinals in 2009 and has been with the team since. After earning his bachelor’s degree from Northwest in 1998, Dorrel spent a year as a graduate assistant at Northeastern State in Oklahoma. He returned to Northwest as a graduate assistant in 1999, when the team won the second of its back-to-back national titles, and completed his master’s degree at Northwest in 2000. Dorrel served coaching stints at South Dakota and William Jewell College in Missouri before being appointed offensive line coach at Northwest in 2004. He was promoted to offensive coordinator prior to the 2007 season and then to assistant head coach after Bostwick was named head coach in December 2010. During the summer of 2008, Dorrel was one of six American football coaches to lead clinics overseas to further strengthen the sport beyond the United States. During the summer of 2007, he served as offensive line coach for Team USA as it competed and won the IFAF World Championships in Japan. Dorrel himself is a former Northwest AllAmerican, having played under Tjeerdsma. Dorrel was a three-year captain for the Bearcats during his collegiate career as an offensive lineman from 1994 to 1997 and earned All-MIAA honors in 1995, 1996 and 1997. A Maryville native, he also was a two-time All-District and All-Conference lineman at Maryville High School. Additionally, Dorrel’s family has long ties to Bearcat football, beginning with his great grandfather, Ross Alexander Scott, who was a fullback on the first Bearcat football team in 1908. Dorrel’s grandfather and a great uncle also played in the program during the 1940s. Dorrel and his wife, Erin, live in Maryville with their twin daughters, Allie and Sam. 15

Richard Wright
Defensive Coordinator Richard Wright has served as Northwest’s defensive line coach and coordinator of special teams since 2004. The Bearcats have featured at least one All-American defensive lineman in every season since. In 2009, Tyler Roach became the program’s 10th All-America defensive lineman to play under Wright. Kendall Wright enjoyed one of the most decorated seasons in 2008 as a return specialist also earning All-America accolades. During Wright’s tenure 10 Bearcats have
Charlie Flohr
Offensive Coordinator Charlie Flohr enters his fifth season at Northwest where he has served as the quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator. He also serves as the recruiting coordinator for the Bearcats In four seasons under Flohr, Northwest is 36-0 in MIAA play, adding four conference titles along with a 53-6 overall record. The Bearcats also claimed the program’s third national title and earned three national runner-up finishes. Flohr was the leader of the nation’s top quarterback and wide receiver combination during the Bearcats 2009 championship season. Jake Soy and Blake Bolles each earned All-America honors while Soy was named national receiver of the year after hauling in 27 touchdowns and leading Division II with 1,559 yards receiving. Only one player in the history of Division II has caught more touchdowns in one season. Bolles set conference records with 42 touchdown passes and passing for 4,145, numbers that ranked second and fourth in the nation, respectively. 16
combined to earn 14 All-MIAA honors as either a lineman or return man. Two former players, Dave Tollefson (New York Giants) and Steve Williams (New England Patriots), are listed on NFL rosters while Tollefson earned a Super Bowl ring with the Giants following the 2007 season. Northwest tied for the most sacks in the nation in 2009 when 19 Bearcats combined for 48 sacks. The Bearcats have finished in the top 10 nationally in quarterback sacks in three of the last four seasons. Wright’s influence on the special teams at Northwest has also become noticeable during his tenure. The Bearcats have blocked 43 kicks in Wright’s six seasons – an average of more than seven per year. Northwest blocked eight kicks in 2009, including three in the postseason. Each blocked kick played a major role in the outcome en route to Northwest’s third NCAA Division II National Championship. Along with great special teams play, Northwest ranked third in NCAA Division II in net punting and 11th in yards allowed per punt during the 2007 campaign. In 2009 a pair of freshmen, Tyler Shaw and Jordan Simmons, helped the Bearcats lead the nation
Northwest ranked second nationally in scoring (42 ppg), third in pass efficiency (172.21), sixth in total offense (474.27 ypg) and eighth in passing (298.93 ypg) in 2009, the highest marks in Flohr’s four seasons. Northwest has ranked 10th, 32nd, 17th and now third nationally in pass efficiency under Flohr. Two Northwest receivers have earned All-America honors under Flohr in addition to Soy – Kendall Wright and tight end Mike Petersen. Wright finished a brilliant four-year career with 243 catches for 3,253 yards and 21 touchdowns while Peterson (first team) and Josh Gannan (second team) accounted for both All-MIAA tight ends in 2007. Flohr was a graduate assistant with the Bearcats in 2002 and 2003, serving as tight ends coach. After obtaining his master’s degree in health and physical education at Northwest, Flohr was hired at conference-rival Truman, where he served as the Bulldogs’ wide receivers and recruiting coach. Under the tutelage of Flohr, Truman receiver Jeff Amundson caught 76 passes in 2004, then the fourth-highest single-season total in program history.
in kick return yards for much of the season. The unit finished 17th overall including two touchdowns, one each by Shaw and Simmons, and an average of more than 23 yards per return. Wright got his first taste of Bearcat football when he served as a graduate assistant at Northwest in 1995 and 1996 as the tight ends coach. Before coming back to Northwest in 2004, Wright served as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at St. Ambrose (Iowa) University from 2000-04. During that time, the Fighting Bees won four straight conference titles and set the league record for consecutive wins. In his first season at St. Ambrose, Wright’s defense also led the country with 32 interceptions. Prior to St. Ambrose, Wright made stops at William Penn (Iowa) College and Central Methodist College (now University) and Dakota State University. Wright began coaching during the 1991 season at Cortland State before spending time at Dana College from 1993-94. Covering several facets of coaching, Wright has been an offensive coordinator, linebackers coach, wide receivers coach and special teams coordinator. Wright is a 1995 graduate of Dana (Neb.) College with a degree in physical education. He earned his master’s degree in physical education from Northwest in 1996. Wright and his wife, Sarah, reside in Maryville with their daughters Grace and Kate. Sarah is a 1998 Northwest graduate.
Flohr is a 2002 graduate of Dakota State University in Madison, S.D., where he earned a degree in health and physical education. Flohr was a four-year letterwinner in football at his alma mater and a two-time all-conference honorable mention selection at wide receiver. He graduated as the program’s all-time leader in punt returns. Flohr and his wife, Amy, reside in Maryville and have two sons, Adam and Austin. Amy is a 2004 Northwest graduate.

and 2008 seasons and led Northwest to two national runner-up finishes, finishing with a combined record of 25-4. Osborn was the 2008 MIAA MVP after throwing for 3,249 yards and 24 touchdowns. He passed for 5,501 yards and 54 touchdowns during his four-year career and remains the most accurate passer in program history, completing 67 percent of his passes. After throwing passes to Jake Soy, he helped groom Soy into the 2009 National Wide Receiver of the Year. Soy led the nation with 27 touchdown catches and 1,559 yards receiving in 2009. Both of those marks set conference and school records. In 2010, under Osborn’s tutelage, Soy was a first team All-MIAA selection and the recipient of the Ken B. Jones MIAA Student-Athlete of the Year Award. Soy caught 83 passes for 1,311 yards and 12 touchdowns. Bearcat Spotlight By David Boyce Last spring Nebraska-Omaha freshman James Franklin had every reason to be excited about spring football. The young Mavericks finished strong, winning three of their last five games. Their two losses were 34-31 at Central Missouri and 16-14 to Missouri Western. Both teams reached the NCAA Division II playoffs. For UNO, the D-II playoffs were a staple in its tradition-rich program, which made for a spirited rivalry with Northwest Missouri State. “We were ready to go into spring ball with a full head of steam,” Franklin said. “Everybody was ready for it. We were going to have a good team.” Franklin and the rest of the Mavericks will never find out. Sometime around midnight or 1 a.m. on a Saturday night last spring, Franklin received an email stating the UNO football program was disbanded. Disbelief was Franklin’s initial reaction. He called teammates. He called coaches. “I got hold of one them and he said, ‘I’m sorry to say it, but it is over.’ That was not a good feeling,” Franklin said. When Franklin went to UNO after a stellar high school career at Olathe North, the last thought on his mind was the football program would end before he graduated. College athletes deal with coaching change all the time. What happened to Franklin and the rest of the UNO players cut deeper. In all, four players from UNO have joined the Northwest team. The others are junior wide receiver Brian Miller, redshirt freshman Jerry Key and sophomore offensive lineman John Becklun. “From what I’ve seen from all the kids we got from UNO is those kids invested a lot in that place. I think it was hard for them,” Northwest coach Adam Dorrel said. “We told them you can play in the MIAA. You have proven that. You will come in here and not be shunned. That is not how this place works. Our kids are going to help you and open their arms to you even if that means you are cutting into their carries, their catches, their tackles and their playing time. That is what our kids have done.” It actually happened to Franklin before he stepped foot on the Northwest campus. He received a call from junior running back Jordan Simmons. Simmons already shares carries with junior running back Billy Creason. Another young, talented running back probably means fewer carries for Creason and Simmons. 18
Creason said bringing in players that helps the team win is what is important. It adds to the competition in practice and that helps all of them in games. “It’s good when you have a running back calling you and saying this is where you need to be,” said Franklin, who rushed for 766 yards and 10 touchdowns for UNO last season. “Obviously, that means people here are not selfish about their position. “I felt like that was a good sign.” The Northwest defense is happy it no longer has to chase Franklin. A year ago, Franklin surprised the Bearcats in the first half at UNO. In fact, Franklin gave the Mavericks their only spark. Franklin rushed for three, first-half touchdowns against Northwest. The Bearcats, though, went into halftime ahead 44-20 on the way to a 58-23 victory. Franklin finished with a 134 yards. “We are a defense that prides itself on stopping the run, and that was one game we didn’t,” senior defensive lineman Josh Lorenson said. “When I heard that we were getting him I was excited. I am glad I get to go against him in practice instead of a game. He’s a big addition to our team.” Franklin said he was surprised by his early success against the Bearcats. It was just his third collegiate game. “When the coach put me in I went out there with an attitude to see what I could do,” he said. “I went out there, made some big plays and got into a rhythm. I thought this might not be as hard as I thought.” He learned about Bearcat pride and adjustments that are made throughout a game. Northwest shut down Franklin in the second half. “They hit hard,” he said. “They wrap up. It does look like they are having fun when they are playing.” Franklin is now immersed in the Bearcat culture and has gained an understanding why the program has been so successful.
“They have more fun than I thought they did,” he said. “I could see it on the field when we played against them. “In practice, we are all joking around. It is a fun environment. I was not really expecting that. You see they have national championships under their belt. They win all the time. I thought everything would be so serious. It is not like that. If you mess up, somebody is there to pick you up. They are not really yelling at you, trying to get you to do everything right the first time. They always encourage you. It’s just a good feel.” Franklin figures to add to the winning culture. He has what all good running backs have and that is vision. Dorrel said Franklin has the ability to spot a hole where none seemingly exist and then burst through it. Lorenson echoed those sentiments. “He really has a great ability to cut,” Lorenson said. “If we are running a power play up the middle and if a hole is not there, he will cut to the outside so quickly and there is nothing you can do about it. You have to be on your toes.” “We have Jordan and we have Billy who will smack you in the face. They give us plenty of different looks. We have a really talented backfield.” Franklin knows there will be a few weird moments during the season. He will face a few UNO teammates who are now playing for other MIAA teams. “I have some high school teammates who went to UNO and I never had to play against them,” Franklin said. “It is going to be interesting to see how that plays out.”

O
ne of the premier and highly anticipated sporting events in all of Division II football is the Fall Classic at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. What started as a one-time event is now in its tenth season with this year’s contest slated for Oct. 1. The annual game between national powerhouses Northwest and Pittsburg State attracts nearly 23,000 fans on average to the home of the Kansas City Chiefs. The first game in 2002, dubbed “The Clash of the Champions,” brought in a series-record 26,695 fans.
The magnitude of the Northwest-Pittsburg State rivalry is something all college programs wish to emulate. In seven of eight meetings, both teams were ranked in the top 20. Four times, both teams were ranked in the top 10 including 2004, when for the first time in Division II history the two topranked teams met in the regular season finale. The 2007 clash marked the first overtime contest played between the two programs. An Xavier Omon leap into the end zone on 4th-and-goal from the 1-yard-line clinched a 37-34 Northwest victory. In 2010, Northwest improved to 7-2 in the Arrowhead series holding off a late comeback by the Gorillas to claim a 22-16 win.

“It’s a great experience for our players. For them to have the opportunity to play a game of that magnitude in that stadium is special.” -former Northwest Head Coach Mel Tjeerdsma
“It is without question one of the premier football games in all of Division II. A great satisfaction for me is the response from alumni and fans and the fact that this game serves as a model for others to follow.” -former Northwest Director of Athletics Dr. Bob Boerigter

Football Ambassadors
The Northwest Missouri State University Bearcat Football Ambassadors perform a number of important functions for the football program. As ambassadors, they give campus tours to prospective recruits. They also help with pregame and postgame festivities, hosting alumni, fans and families. They also have an important role with the players’ families. They stay in direct contact with family members of each player, giving updates on the progress of the team and the individual player.
Northwest School Songs Alma Mater
Bearcat Fight Song
Let your voices loudly ringing, Echo far and near; Songs of praise thy children singing To the memory dear.
Come on Bearcats fight, (you Bearcats fight!) on to victory. Hail the Green and White, best in history.
Years may dim our recollections, Time its change may bring; Still thy name in fond affection Evermore we sing. Chorus Alma Mater! Alma Mater! Tender, fair and true, Grateful ones with love unfailing, All their vows renew.

Come on Bearcats fight, (you Bearcats fight!) proud, brave and strong we will stand. Our glorious colors raised up triumphantly, across Missouri land.
Celebration of a big life By David Boyce One wife, one daughter, one son, numerous relatives and hundreds of friends are the important numbers Scott Bostwick left behind when he passed away June 5th of a heart attack. Bostwick never completely realized his dream of leading Northwest Missouri State football program as the head coach. He got the job in late December and coached the Bearcats in spring drills. The season opener on Sept. 1 at Truman and the home opener Sept. 10 against Sioux Falls would have been special days for Bostwick. By any standard, though, Bostwick already had Hall of Fame credentials in his 17 years as defensive coordinator at Northwest. His units consistently ranked at or near the top in the MIAA. Under his guidance, the Bearcats played defense with a passion and they played smart. Bostwick was a bundle of energy on the sidelines, injecting his enthusiasm into the players. “His passion and pride was what he was about,” said senior defensive tackle Aaron Terry. “He was here when they first started building the program to where it is now. He lived every day as a Bearcat. I feel that’s what he will be remembered as, his passion and pride as a Bearcat.” Most importantly, Bostwick was a Hall of Fame person. Whether it was his immediate family, Northwest players or friends, Bostwick left a lasting, positive mark. “As an uncle, he was just a great man,” Terry said. “I had some tough times and he guided me to where I am at and made me a better man. He has just been a good mentor and role model to me.”
the sense he didn’t want to. He would rather talk about his family, his brothers and his sisters.”
Game day in Maryville was always special for Bostwick and his family.

Football games, defensive awards and other on-field accolades sometimes fade from memory with time. Making a difference in another person’s life lives much longer. Bostwick will live on because of the positive impact he had on so many people. “He was just a guy who cared about his players,” Northwest senior defensive
tackle Josh Lorenson said. “He was that coach you could go and sit down and talk with. You could tell him something stupid you did and he would laugh at you at the right parts and lecture you at the right parts. “He was that guy who would never judge you, but would give you his advice and his opinion. That’s what I will always remember about him.” Remember Bostwick for his smile, the gleam in his eye when talked about anything and the way he treated you as his best friend. Scott Bostwick was a family man, a football coach and a wonderful human being. j
