Welcome to the 24th annual Portland Jewish Film Festival, produced by the Northwest Film Center and co-presented with the Institute for Judaic Studies. Bette Davis (1908-1989) and Joan Crawford (1904-1977) were two of classic Hollywood’s most famous and respected leading ladies. Crawford got her start in the silents, first appearing in minor roles in lavish MGM productions, then transitioning to the gritty Warner Bros. films which earned her fame. While Crawford’s performances often appeared over-the-top, she was always psychologically committed to her roles, which grew darker, more villainous and indelible as her career progressed. Davis, on the other hand, worked at Warner for nearly her entire career, establishing herself as Hollywood’s top star and a model for the strong, modern woman. The two stars famously carried on a bitter feud throughout their careers, which became fodder for unending gossip and legendary Hollywood lore. But despite their deep personal animosity, the rivalry pushed each to excel, and between them they achieved some of the highest highs in some of the most memorable roles that we have had the good fortune to enjoy. Looking, Really Looking! The Films of Chantal Akerman surveys the work of the influential, Belgian/French filmmaker and places it within a conceptual, thematic, and historical context at the intersection of film and contemporary art. Akerman (1950-2015) presents us with a deeply autobiographical filmography spanning 40 years—typically portrayed in long takes within the modest aesthetics of everyday life and revolving around her personal family history, identity, memory, and displacement. Though her work is often placed within feminist, queer, Jewish, and avant-garde circles, Akerman’s expansive oeuvre freely moves across genres from the documentary/essay to the musical, psychodrama, structural film, and multi-media installation. Fiercely independent and always working outside established production systems, Akerman was “a paradoxical personality, at once rootless and deeply rooted...arguably the most important European film director of her generation.”—J. Hoberman. Looking, Really Looking!, a film and performative program, is presented by the Northwest Film Center and Zena Zezza, a Portland-based contemporary art project, and is curated by Sandra Percival and Morgen Ruff. The program begins with four screenings this summer and resumes in September 2016, running through May 2017.
