Welcome to the Lewis Clark Valley NEZ PERCE HISTORY & CULTURE The Gateway to Hells Canyon, where two rivers (Snake and Clearwater) and two cities (Lewiston, Idaho and Clarkston, Washington) come together to serve as the hub for your next adventure! A must-see is Hells Canyon, North America’s deepest river gorge. Our region is filled with recreational opportunities for jet boating, white-water rafting, swimming, fishing, hunting, hiking and camping. Miles of levee pathways follow the rivers for walking, jogging and biking. We’re called the “Banana Belt” of the Pacific Northwest because of the mild climate that allows for year-round golfing but only a short drive away from snow skiing and snowmobiling. The Lewis Clark Valley is a recreational paradise jam packed with history and natural beauty.
WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU SOON!

According to tribal legend, Nimiipuu, “the people,” were created in north central Idaho at the dawn of time. There is evidence dating back more than 11,000 years of Nez Perce inhabiting the regions surrounding the Clearwater and Snake River valleys. The Nez Perce people are credited for saving the lives of the Corps of Discovery explorers who entered their camp near starvation. Without the food and shelter provided by the Nimiipuu villagers, the Lewis & Clark expedition may have had a tragic ending. The Nez Perce National Historical Park, 11 miles southeast of Lewiston on state Highway 95, is a complete informational center and museum featuring historical displays and interpretive programs teaching travelers about the rich history and customs of the Nez Perce Tribe. There are 24 separate interpretive sites that constitute the Nez Perce National Historical Park. Pow wows and other community events are hosted in various locations throughout the year. Tribal business enterprises include forest products, limestone quarry operations, two popular casinos, an RV park and convenience store. Visitors are welcomed today just as the Nez Perce welcomed the Corps of Discovery explorers nearly 200 years ago.....come experience their history and culture.

ROTARY RIVERS & RIDGES RIDE
riversandridgesride.org
Whether you’re a road bicyclist, mountain biker or casual rider, the Lewis-Clark Valley and surrounding region has a trail for you. Many road cyclists bike through our area and along Highway 12, a scenic highway that closely follows the Clearwater River. Originally constructed in 1917, the Old Lewiston Grade (Spiral Highway) has generated many stories attributed to its many curves and switchbacks. Replaced by the current highway more than 30 years ago, the 8-mile Spiral Highway has become famous for the challenge it presents to participants of the “I Made the Grade” annual bicycle race. The race climbs from the river’s edge to the top of the valley, and attracts riders from throughout the region. Mountain biking enthusiasts can enjoy miles of dirt trails in Hells Gate State Park and the attached recreational area. With views of the Snake River and nearby Craig Mountains, it's a scenic and peaceful place to escape people and traffic. Casual bicyclists have free access to more than 25 miles of paved pathways on the Clearwater and Snake River Recreation Trail. The Lewis-Clark Valley’s mild climate allows for use of the bike paths year round. You can access downtown Lewiston via the Clearwater and Snake River Recreation Trail at the 5th Street pedestrian overpass. You’ll find unique bike racks that double as art throughout the downtown corridor.

Miles of Waterfront Recreation ON THE RIVER
Between the Clearwater and Snake rivers, water enthusiasts have miles and miles of recreation to choose from. Boat launches give easy access to wakeboarders and waterskiers. Sandy beaches and quiet lagoons make perfect places to relax and enjoy the river.
ALONG THE RIVER
Casual bicyclists, walkers and runners utilize the more than 25 miles of paved pathways on the Clearwater and Snake River Recreation Trail. The Lewis-Clark Valley’s mild climate allows for use of the paths year round. Parks, beaches, boat launches and rest room facilities can be found along the route. The annual Seaport River Run, held every April, allows serious competitors and amateur runners a challenging course covering both sides of the Snake River.
GOLFING
The Lewis-Clark Valley earned the name “Banana Belt” due to the mild winter climate. While most of the Inland Northwest is covered in snow and frost, golf courses in the valley are open for business. You can play golf every month of the year (a few locals play nearly every day) on one of the four 18-hole courses in the valley. All courses offer full amenities and are challenging courses to play. For information on tournaments, play and stay packages or to schedule tee times call: BRYDEN CANYON GOLF COURSE, 208.746.0863 CLARKSTON GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB, 509.758.2546 LEWISTON GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB, 208.743.3549 QUAIL RIDGE GOLF CLUB, 509.758.8501
There are 12 exercise stations along a 1.25-mile paved trail on the Lewiston Levee Bypass. Park in one of the three parking lots to access the trail.
DISC GOLF
Going above and beyond just throwing a frisbee back and forth, Disc Golf involves strategy, skill, and a desire to have fun! Like regular golf, players tee off by throwing their discs toward the “hole” in an attempt to reach the end in as few as throws as possible. Try your hand at the 9-hole course at Sunset Park in Lewiston (2602 11th Avenue) or at the newly finished 9-hole course at Hells Gate State Park.
SKATE PARK
At Kiwanis Park in Lewiston (1114 Snake River Ave), you'll find a great skate park (12,000 sq. ft.) with three pools, one with a difficult shallow end about 6 feet deep and a deep end about 9 feet deep with good transition. Another pool is about 8 feet deep and really large with a few vertical spots, street spots and stairs with a rail.

WINES
This region is considered part of the new frontier of winegrowing areas in the United States. But, we actually have a long wine history. Grapes were introduced into the Clearwater Valley by 1872 and thanks to the pioneering efforts of two Frenchmen, Louis Desol and Robert Schleicher, and one German immigrant, Jacob Schaefer, the region rapidly become known for its wines. Schleicher was most successful, taking a number of gold medals for his wines at expositions in Omaha, Buffalo, St. Louis and Portland. Today, local wineries are winning their own medals for varietals made from local and regional grapes. The Lewis Clark Valley hopes to be one of the newest designated American Viticulture Area (AVA) in the near future. Taste for yourself and take some home to share with friends and family. Local Wineries, Breweries, Distillers and other Local Products listed on page 9.

Public Art The valley has a growing collection of public art. Some of the newest pieces can be found in downtown Lewiston. Enjoy the fountain in front of the Lewiston City Library, the benches and bike racks that double as art and the mosaics on the 5th Street pedestrian bridge. The North Lewiston Gateway Project, provides artwork that can be appreciated as you drive into Lewiston from the north and east. Artists David Govedare and Keith Powell created a series of statues depicting the meeting of Lewis and Clark and the Nez Perce people. Three bronze statues, created by Shirley Bothum, depict Meriwether Lewis, William Clark and Sacajawea. They are located at the intersection of Highway 12 and 21st Street. In the center of Lewis-Clark State College campus is a representation of the explorers meeting Chief Twisted Hair. The wooded setting depicts the Clearwater region with waterfalls and native plants. Other bronze figures include Nez Perce women gathering food.
Nez Perce mythology with a symbolic Earth Mother figure whose body sustains all forms of life, and from whose hands the rivers run. The wildlife and legends depicted on the east-facing wall are those of the Clearwater River and its tributaries; on the west face are those of the Snake River. The central “Trickster” character of Indian legend, Coyote, keeps watch from the north end of the wall. Other art include a bronze statue of Sacajawea at Lewiston’s Pioneer Park. Water flows from the bowls in her outstretched hands in the summer months, into a pool guarded by four bronze coyote statues. Brackenbury Square, on Lewiston’s Main Street, features a modern sculpture fountain of connected rings with three bronze children playing in the pool of water. Tribune Plaza, a public area created by the Lewiston Tribune, features a bronze sculpture of long-time local newspaper reporter Tom Campbell. In 1973 Don D. Joslyns was commissioned to create the bronze of a Nez Perce warrior on an Appaloosa horse entitled “Indian Summer 1974”, located at the Nez Perce County courthouse.
The Tsceminicum sculpture is located on the Lewiston side of the confluence of the Clearwater and Snake rivers. It interprets

Hells Canyon
stays in rustic lodges complement the ever-popular float trips via inflatable raft or kayak. Guided trips are highly recommended because of the rapids that range up to Class IV and V.
The Lewis-Clark Valley is the gateway to Hells Canyon, world famous as North America’s deepest river gorge. Hells Canyon is a remnant of the last ice age, and was formed by the flowing waters of the 1,000-mile long Snake River. The canyon measures a mile and a half from the river bottom at Granite Creek Rapids to the tallest mountaintop. The headwaters of the Snake River start in Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming and traverses six states. It crosses southern Idaho, then turns north to form the boundary between the state of Oregon, finally entering Washington and turning southwest to end its travels in the wide embrace of the Columbia River.
The earliest boats to travel into the canyon were sternwheelers from 1860 to 1910. Wild and rugged with many rapids, the canyon is primarily accessible today by jetboat and inflatable raft. Outfitters and tour guides will point out the canyon’s Indian petroglyphs, a myriad of wildlife, abandoned mines, shipwreck sites and homesteads. The region was once home to the Nez Perce who occupied Hells Canyon for thousands of years, 150 archaeological sites have been identified. The most vivid evidence of the early inhabitants lies at Buffalo Eddy; a scattered group of petroglyphs bearing 240 different designs. The canyon also has several other rock art sites that have been identified and can be viewed along the way. History buffs, hikers, anglers and lovers of the rugged outdoors have several ways to visit Hells Canyon. Day trips or overnight

Hells Canyon is a name given to the section of the mighty Snake River which stretches from Hells Canyon Dam northward for 75 miles to the Washington-Oregon border. It is largely inaccessible except by river craft. When Congress passed the Wild and Scenic River Act in 1975, 31.5 miles of the river from Hells Canyon Dam to Upper Pittsburgh Landing were designated “wild.” It is designated “scenic” for 36 miles above Pittsburgh Landing.

Chief Timothy Park
An artist's rendering of the listening circle
The Confluence Project Maya Lin walks the project site
The Confluence Project is interpretive artwork by world renowned artist Maya Lin, created to reflect the people and environment of the Columbia River Basin. It is six public art installations at significant points along the Columbia River system. Confluence is a collaboration of Pacific Northwest tribes, renowned artist Maya Lin, civic groups from Washington and Oregon and other artists, architects and landscape designers. The project stretches 438 miles from the mouth of the Columbia River in the west to the gateway to Hells Canyon in the east, with sites in both Oregon and Washington. Currently, four of the six sites are complete: CAPE DISAPPOINTMENT (ILWACO, WASH.) FORT VANCOUVER (VANCOUVER, WASH.) SANDY RIVER DELTA (TROUTDALE, ORE.) SACAJAWEA STATE PARK (PASCO, WASH.)
Two more are in the works: CHIEF TIMOTHY PARK (CLARKSTON, WASH.) SET FOR COMPLETION IN SPRING 2015 CELILO PARK (NEAR THE DALLES, ORE.)
These are "teachable places," transformed and reimagined to explore the confluence of history, culture and ecology in our region. Each work references a passage from the Lewis and Clark journals as a snapshot in time, while comparing it with the deeper story. Visit the Confluence project online experience at www. journeybook.confluenceproject.org). The local installation at Chief Timothy Park is scheduled for completion in 2015. Located on an island at the confluence of the Clearwater and Snake rivers
in Clarkston, Washington, it is the only Confluence Project site that still resembles what Lewis and Clark saw 200 years ago. Here, Maya Lin is fully restoring a section of the island to native grasses and wildflowers and will install a large, stone-rimmed earthwork: a "listening circle" sculpted out of a natural amphitheater located at the top of the island. The shape is inspired by a Nez Perce blessing ceremony performed here in spring 2005, at which the women were seated facing north, the men facing south, and the elders facing east, with no one allowed to pass behind them. The form of the "listening circle" also arises from Maya Lin's initial response to this site, where she envisioned creating a modern-day hieroglyph, representing waves moving on the water. A pathway from the parking area will lead to the top of a hill, and around and down into the amphitheater before connecting with other trails on the island. Near the top of the island, at a slight outcropping facing the basalt cliffs on the opposite shore, Ms. Lin will set this passage from Clark's journal:
2 9 TH L ANNUA
AUGUST5 1 27-29,T2O0 WN DOWN L E W IS T O N , ID A H O
Worthy of remark that not one tick of timber on the river near the forks and but a fiew trees for a great distance up the River. -William Clark, Oct 10, 1805, 2 miles upstream.
Visitors to this Nez Perce homeland will experience the planned "listening circle," and focus their attention on the breeze through the trees, the gentle sound of the water, and the muted browns, greens and yellows of the enduring landscape that surrounds them. The Chief Timothy Park site is scheduled for completion in 2015. For more info: confluenceproject.org
