Plan a Few Sunsets Here The panoramic sunset from the summit of Lewiston Hill just might take your breath away. From an overlook more than 2,000 feet above the confluence of the Clearwater and Snake rivers, the view of the Lewis Clark Valley, consisting of Lewiston, ID and Clarkston, WA, is awe-inspiring and dramatic. Known as the Gateway to Hells Canyon, the Lewis Clark Valley has long been a meeting place. It's where Idaho meets Washington, Lewiston meets Clarkston and Asotin, the Clearwater River meets the Snake River, and where Lewis and Clark met the Nez Perce. It's where you will meet the adventure of a lifetime with all the recreational and cultural offerings.

The Lewis Clark Valley is a recreational paradise jam packed with history and natural beauty.

The Lewis clark valley A Place, a feeling, a state of mind.

A must-see is Hells Canyon, North America’s deepest river gorge. Our region is filled with recreational opportunities for jet boating, white-water rafting, swimming, fishing, hunting, hiking and camping. Miles of levee pathways follow the rivers for walking, jogging and biking. We’re called the “Banana Belt” of the Pacific Northwest because of the mild climate that allows for year-round golfing but only a short drive away from snow skiing and snowmobiling. This area is also rich in history and you will find yourself taken back in time to learn about how Lewis and Clark engaged in diplomatic exchanges with the native Nez Perce tribal chiefs. A stroll through beautiful downtown Lewiston's historical district will shed light on its early years during the gold rush and the era of steamboat travel. Also, part of our history, and becoming a big part of our future, is the re-emergence of the wine industry.

Local Flavor When you have the opportunity to experience the local flavor, items that are produced and made right here, you can really get to know a place and its people. Our products are indicative of our people, downto-earth and focused on creating a good quality of life. Fresh produce, organic grains, local jams and jellies, honey, baked goods, wine, beer and other liquor are a few of the things you’ll want to sample and take home with you. Local restaurants feature Northwest specialties on their menu like salmon, trout and steelhead. Fresh huckleberries and morel mushrooms are in high demand when they come in season. And don’t leave for home without tasting our famous bite-size steak (fried or grilled) that’s on the menu at several area restaurants.

Microbrews

Quench your thirst with a light ale, soulful IPA, rich dark beer or a smooth sweet stout with a visit to one of our local establishments for the finest in suds.

Wines

This region is considered part of the new frontier of wine-growing areas in the United States. But, we actually have a long wine history. Grapes were introduced into the Clearwater Valley by 1872 and thanks to the pioneering efforts of two Frenchmen, Louis Desol and Robert Schleicher, and one German immigrant, Jacob Schaefer, the region rapidly become known for its wines. Schleicher was most successful, taking a number of gold medals for his wines at expositions in Omaha, Buffalo, St. Louis and Portland. Today, local wineries are winning their own medals for varietals made from local and regional grapes. The Lewis Clark Valley hopes to be one of the newest designated American Viticulture Area (AVA) in the near future. Taste for yourself and take some home to share with friends and family.

The Call of the Wild Find your favorite fishing hole

Few places offer the variety and accessibility of outdoor diversions that are found right in our backyard.

See page 27 for a list of professional guides.

You don’t even have to leave town to find some of the best fishing spots for trolling, spinning, bait casting and fly-fishing. Five public boat ramps and two marinas are located within a few miles. The spring and summer month’s fast action catch is bass, trout and spring chinook. During the fall it is steelhead. The canyon has a healthy number of North America’s largest fresh water fish, the great white sturgeon, which can reach lengths up to eight feet. You can’t take one home but catching one could be the highlight of your trip.

Ride the Valley Whether you’re a road bicyclist, mountain biker or casual rider, the Lewis-Clark Valley and surrounding region has a trail for you. Many road cyclists bike through our area and along Highway 12, a scenic highway that closely follows the Clearwater River. Originally constructed in 1917, the Old Lewiston Grade (Spiral Highway) has generated many stories attributed to its many curves and switchbacks. Replaced by the current highway more than 30 years ago, the 8-mile Spiral Highway has become famous for the challenge it presents to participants of the “I Made the Grade” annual bicycle race. The race climbs from the river’s edge to the top of the valley, and attracts riders from throughout the region.

Two Great Events, One Great Day of Fun For the Whole Family! portofclarkston.com

Mountain biking enthusiasts can enjoy miles of dirt trails in Hells Gate State Park and the attached recreational area. With views of the Snake River and nearby Craig Mountains, it's a scenic and peaceful place to escape people and traffic. LOCAL TIP: Pick up a bike route map at the visitor information center. Casual bicyclists have free access to more than 25 miles of paved pathways on the Clearwater and Snake River Recreation Trail. The North Lewiston Gateway Project, provides artwork that can be appreciated as you drive into Lewiston from the north and east. Artists David Govedare and Keith Powell created a series of statues depicting the meeting of Lewis and Clark and the Nez Perce people. Three bronze statues, created by Shirley Bothum, depict Meriwether Lewis, William Clark and Sacajawea. They are located at the intersection of Highway 12 and 21st Street.

a celebration of the Lewis-Clark Valley

In the center of Lewis-Clark State College campus is a representation of the explorers meeting Chief Twisted Hair. The wooded setting depicts the Clearwater region with waterfalls and native plants. Other bronze figures include Nez Perce women gathering food. LOCAL TIP: Don't miss Beautiful Downtown Lewiston's annual ArtWalk, held each fall

The Tsceminicum sculpture is located on the Lewiston side of the confluence of the Clearwater and Snake rivers. It interprets Nez Perce mythology with a symbolic Earth Mother figure whose body sustains all forms of life, and from whose hands the rivers run. The wildlife and legends depicted on the east-facing wall are those of the Clearwater River and its tributaries; on the west face are those of the Snake River. The central “Trickster” character of Indian legend, Coyote, keeps watch from the north end of the wall. Visit our website for an up-to-date listing of valley art.

LOCAL TIP: Rent a paddleboard, kayak or pedal boat from a local rental store and enjoy the views from the river.

Between the Clearwater and Snake rivers, water enthusiasts have miles and miles of recreation to choose from. Boat launches give easy access to fishermen, wakeboarders and waterskiers. Grab some supplies for a picnic and set up on one of the many sandy beaches for the day. Or search out a quiet lagoon to relax and enjoy the river, launch a paddleboard or throw a line. You can even wake up with a view of the river at one of several riverside RV parks or campgrounds .

Adventure in Hells Canyon

Hells Canyon is a name given to the section of the mighty Snake River which stretches from Hells Canyon Dam northward for 75 miles to the Washington-Oregon border. It is largely inaccessible except by river craft. When Congress passed the Wild and Scenic River Act in 1975, 31.5 miles of the river from Hells Canyon Dam to Upper Pittsburgh Landing were designated “wild.” It is designated “scenic” for 36 miles above Pittsburgh Landing. The earliest boats to travel into the canyon were sternwheelers from 1860 to 1910. Wild and rugged with many rapids, the canyon is primarily accessible today by jetboat and inflatable raft. Outfitters and tour guides will point out the canyon’s Indian petroglyphs, a myriad of wildlife, abandoned mines, shipwreck sites and homesteads. The region was once home to the Nez Perce who occupied Hells Canyon for thousands of years, 150 archaeological sites have been identified. The most vivid evidence of the early inhabitants lies at Buffalo Eddy; a scattered group of petroglyphs bearing 240 different designs. The canyon also has several other rock art sites that have been identified and can be viewed along the way.

The Lewis-Clark Valley is the gateway to Hells Canyon, world famous as North America’s deepest river gorge. Hells Canyon is a remnant of the last ice age, and was formed by the flowing waters of the 1,000-mile long Snake River. The canyon measures a mile and a half from the river bottom at Granite Creek Rapids to the tallest mountaintop. The headwaters of the Snake River start in Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming and traverses six states. It crosses southern Idaho, then turns north to form the boundary between the state of Oregon, finally entering Washington and turning southwest to end its travels in the wide embrace of the Columbia River.

History buffs, hikers, anglers and lovers of the rugged outdoors have several ways to visit Hells Canyon. Day trips or overnight stays in rustic lodges complement the everpopular float trips via inflatable raft or kayak. Guided trips are highly recommended because of the rapids that range up to Class IV and V. Hells Canyon attracts whitewater rafters, jetboaters, hikers, campers and outdoor adventurers worldwide. You can enjoy a lazy afternoon on a white sand beach, fish for steelhead or sturgeon or help deliver the mail to remote ranches. You won’t want to miss this breathtaking trip.

Nimiipuu - The People According to tribal legend, Nimiipuu, “the people,” were created in north central Idaho at the dawn of time. There is evidence dating back more than 11,000 years of Nez Perce inhabiting the regions surrounding the Clearwater and Snake River valleys. The Nez Perce people are credited for saving the lives of the Corps of Discovery explorers who entered their camp near starvation. Without the food and shelter provided by the Nimiipuu villagers, the Lewis & Clark expedition may have had a tragic ending. The Nez Perce National Historical Park, 11 miles southeast of Lewiston on state Highway 95, is a complete informational center and museum featuring historical displays and interpretive programs teaching travelers about the rich history and customs of the Nez Perce Tribe. There are 24 separate interpretive sites that constitute the Nez Perce National Historical Park. Pow wows and other community events are hosted in various locations throughout the year. Tribal business enterprises include forest products, limestone quarry operations, two popular casinos, an RV park and convenience store. Visitors are welcomed today just as the Nez Perce welcomed the Corps of Discovery explorers nearly 200 years ago.....come experience their history and culture.

Asotin, WA 509.243.4411 www.cityofasotin.org/asotin-days

Asotin is a Nez Perce word for the freshwater eels that used to run aplenty in a nearby creek. This riverside hamlet still sports steelhead, sturgeon, bass and more in the Snake River. Located just south of Clarkston on Highway 129, Asotin is a jumping off point for many adventures. You'll pass through this small, friendly town on your way to Fields Spring State Park, overlooking the Grande Ronde River, or to Heller Bar, where many fishing and rafting charters arrive, and beyond that, Hells Canyon. Hop on the riverside levee trail and bike, walk or jog between Asotin and Clarkston/Lewiston. Challenge your legs and lungs with a bike ride up the grade to Anatone. Or, if you're of the motorized two-wheeled persuasion, the spectacular views and twists and turns, make this grade a must for motorcyclists. Approximately 15 miles upriver from Asotin, on either side of an eddy formed by a series of sharp bends in the Snake River are densely grouped clusters of petroglyphs and a few pictographs. Known as Buffalo Eddy, the unique petroglyphs of this area are evidence of the longevity of the Nez Perce in the region and contain hundreds of distinct images that possibly date from as early as 4,500 years ago. The Asotin County Museum features hands-on displays emphasizing the region’s pioneer period. Highlights include a Mastodon elephant tusk over 10,000 years old, 1880s sheepherder’s cabin, pioneer home, old time barbershop and a one-room schoolhouse. Live & Work Where You Want to Play A Retirement Oasis

The routine of punching time-cards is past, and now it’s time to capture those hours for yourself! Our affordable cost of living, variety of cultural events, access to medical services and abundant recreational possibilities make the Lewis-Clark Valley a wonderful place to live. Independent homes, assisted living homes and skilled nursing facilities can all be found in the Lewis-Clark Valley. Be active and get involved in the numerous senior activities.

Southeast Washington A Great Place To Live & Work

WASHINGTON STATE UNIVERSITY (WSU) Pullman, WA - 4 year, located 32 miles northwest of Lewiston. WSU offers more than 150 undergraduate programs and 100+ master’s and doctoral degrees.

Business Opportunities

The Lewis-Clark Valley offers a unique location for starting and expanding companies. On one side of the Snake River is a corporate income tax state (Idaho); on the other side is a gross receipt tax state (Washington). They each present different regulatory environments, depending on the nature of the business. Business locations can be determined on the basis of mostappropriate tax and regulatory issues, while enjoying the same labor market, vendor support, transportation services and training resources.
