REGISTRATION INFORMATION Community Recreation & Wellness For the last forty years, Northwood has offered residents and members of the community an opportunity to become involved and live more through its community outreach initiative. Membership to Community Recreation & Wellness is $20.00 per year. Membership allows you access to programs, free mailouts, exclusive lectures and other special one-time events. Registration Information There are three ways to register!

1. Call our office at 902-454-3351. If we aren’t available when you call, just leave us a message telling us your name, your contact information and the program you’re interested in. 2. Stop by either our Halifax or Bedford office during business hours. For up to date times that we are available please call our info line at 902-454-3351. 3. Visit us online at nwood.ns.ca/calendar find the program you wish to register for and click register. Programs, events, education, workshops, etc. are for Community Recreation & Wellness members only, unless otherwise specified. Advance registration is required unless otherwise specified. Drop-in programs do not require a commitment and are on a pay-as-you go basis. However, if you plan to attend a drop-in program, please register in advance using one of the methods listed above.

Calling all Painters! These series of instructional artist studio time are for all skill levels of artists to work on their independent projects in a social, yet serious environment. Through the shared space you will have the opportunity to learn from each other, learn new skills from the professional instructional artists and have the opportunity to seek support on various skills. The space is open and bright. Contact our office for more details on this program or for what you need to bring to get started. Supplies are not included. We do offer canvases for sale and have a few paints and brushes for sharing as needed.

Northwood’s Singers The Northwood Singers are a mixed voice chorus who sing a variety of styles under the direction of accomplished jazz pianist, Paul Simons. This dynamic group has performed with Symphony Nova Scotia, at the Paul O’Regan Hall, DeWolfe Park as part of the Bedford Days Celebrations and at various other Community Concert locations. This class is an accessible yoga class that focuses on seated postures and modified poses that everyone can enjoy! The class will focus on functional poses that help mobility of the spine and joints, stretch and strengthen our muscles and deep breathing exercises that are linked with movement. A great program for overall physical health.

Whether you use a yoga mat or sit in a chair, join experienced instructor Anna Hirtle for a weekly session of breathing exercises, gentle stretches, strengthening postures, and finally a few moments of relaxation. A Trip Down Memory Lane Step into the 1940s on this trip to Memory Lane Heritage Village in Lake Charlotte – a village that represents a time within living memory for many and bring stories from the past alive. Virtual Reality & 360 Video

Community Workshops are a way for the surrounding community to come together and enjoy an education space. Community Workshops provide a platform for vendors and local groups to share knowledge, skills, information and connect with Community Recreation & Wellness members. Northwood offers a variety of informative, education sessions where participants of all ages can come together over a commonality and make new discoveries! Please find this season’s upcoming Community Workshops below.

Northwood’s Community Recreation & Wellness welcomes you to try out virtual reality & 360 video technology. Put the virtual reality headset on and be transported to places you’ve never been while doing things you never thought possible. Working alongside local film producers to produce content featuring Nova Scotia land marks and places of cultural significance, there is surely something for everyone to experience. Device Assistance Clinics Thanks to the assistance of the Halifax Public Libraries, we offer these free, one hour device assistance clinics designed for people in need of basic supportive learning for their device. Come and learn about how to use your favourite device and all its functions – computer, iPhone, iPad etc. A laptop computer will be provided for use during the session for those needing one. Tree Planting Day

Think you might like Boccia? Give it a try and learn more about the program at the open house. Sample games and demonstrations. All are welcome and there is no charge for this event!

Thanks to a generous grant from Trees Canada, we will be planting many food producing trees on September 19 at the William E Frank Live More Park. All are welcome to assist in the planting of trees and the celebrations. Many hands make light work! Boccia Ball New to Northwood! Easter Seals Nova Scotia Boccia Program (pron.: /boch-a) is a precision ball sport, related to bowling. The sport is contested at local, national and international levels, by athletes with severe physical disabilities. In 1984, it became a Paralympic sport, and is now played in more than 50 countries worldwide. Fresh fruits, vegetables, homemade-style bread and many dried goods will be available bi-weekly at Northwood! Through a partnership with the Mobile Food Market, Northwood will host an affordable fresh food market every two weeks this autumn. The first autumn market will be September 7 in the new market area on Main Street in Northwood’s Halifax Campus. This market is open to all and all are welcome to attend!
