A Lifetime filled with open hands and heart for everyone she met
Joyce started volunteering at Northwood when her mother came to live here in 1993. She would tell you, as she has told many, that Northwood saved her life, and gave her purpose after her husband and best friend, Albert, died suddenly. She went on to spend 30+ years as a volunteer with Northwood’s Leisure and Recreation Department. She was recognized for her contribution and presented with Northwood’s Loving Care Award in 2017.
Joyce never hesitated to offer support to anyone, whether it be a stranger in need of a hug at the grocery store or convincing her daughter to pick up a young person waiting for the bus in the rain. She was an amazing woman who gave an open, loving, and compassionate heart to her family, friends, and everyone she met.
Northwood’s Hearts & Hands Campaign will ensure that Joyce will never be forgotten. Her kindness and love will forever be felt in the newly named, Joyce Bond Centre.
Joyce shared her life, her family, and her love with our Northwood Community. Her heart was filled with kindness, and it is our honour to be embarking on the Hands & Hearts Campaign for the new naming of the Joyce Bond Centre. The Hands & Hearts Campaign will recognize all donors for their generosity on a wall inside the Joyce Bond Centre. Every gift will make a difference. Any amount you can contribute is greatly appreciated.

Happy Holidays from Northwood
A message from President and CEO, Janet Simm
As we enter the twilight of 2022, there is an eagerness to enter a new year of positivity and happiness. We have all been looking forward to getting back to a happier time. We are looking forward to resuming some long-standing holiday traditions, slightly modified to ensure we keep our clients and staff safe while continuing to enjoy the warmth of the holidays- a chance to spend time with friends and family- a time to live Life to the fullest, flourishing in a community of belonging, dignity, and choice. This is a busy time of year for us here at Northwood, but it is also one of the most exciting times.
As we all look back over the last three years, while I am so glad many of those challenges are behind us, I am in awe of what we accomplished as an organization, a city, and a province. All the sacrifices you have made will be remembered by those residents and clients who were able to continue to live with dignity because of your hard work and compassion. I look back on the dedication, compassion, and bravery of all the Northwood family. You truly are amazing. The support our clients receive from the Northwood staff, volunteers, and the Northwood Foundation is truly incredible.
The opportunities that are in front of the organization to support Nova Scotians to LIVE MORE are limitless because of your hard work and dedication. While we will always face challenges, we have shown that we have the courage to face these challenges head on and be stronger as a result.
I hope this holiday season and the year ahead hold great things for you and your family. This season is a time to spend with the people you love, reflect on the year that has past and look to a shining future. We are committed to making sure everyone in the Northwood community feels the warmth of the season.
I would like to wish all of our clients, staff, donors and the rest of our community a wonderful holiday season and a Happy New Year, from all of us here at Northwood!

Every gift makes a difference. It’s easy to give!

There comes a time when a space needs to be revitalized to meet with today’s standards and provide a more vibrant, stimulating, growth-driven environment, and we are proud to announce that time is now!
The Activities Centre, is to be renamed the Joyce Bond Centre in honor and in memory of one of our passionate, dedicated volunteers, is the central hub for the community. It’s
where our members come together to socialize, share life stories, meet new friends, experience varying forms of entertainment like live theatre, guest speakers, or play some bingo and catch up with family and friendslearning and creating joyful memories along the way.
In 1977, Northwood was the first of its kind in North America to offer a range of social activities in long-term care. This renewal program will continue our drive to be seen as innovators in our field, ensuring a better tomorrow for our community.

Over the past several months Northwood Halifax Nursing Services has begun work to adjust our staffing model of care. This is because in 2020 our resident numbers reduced in Halifax by 100 to allow for a majority of private rooms. As a result of this reduction, the Department of Seniors and LongTerm Care have adjusted our budget accordingly.
Northwood Halifax Nursing Services has begun to work
differently within our established neighborhoods with a reduced number of RN Clinical Leaders in our Center building from 9 to 7 and reduced number of Nursing Services Managers in our Center building from 3 to 2. In addition, starting this month there will also be a reduction in the number of LPNs working from 7pm to 7am from 9 to 6. Each center neighborhood is working more closely as a team
to care for the residents living in the neighborhood. Fortunately, we have been able to accomplish these changes without anyone losing their employment. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we implement our new staffing model which reflects our 100-bed reduction. The teams on all shifts have been working together to plan and adjust to the new normal while maintaining quality resident care.
HANDS & HEARTS COME TOGETHER
A NEW LOOK AND A NEW NAME: THE JOYCE BOND CENTRE
Together, we are seeking to raise community, corporate and personal donations to help fund the renovations and rename this community hub to the JOYCE BOND CENTRE.
We are thrilled that our family will be partnering with the Northwood Foundation to renovate and rename the community room at Northwood in Halifax, to the JOYCE BOND CENTRE, in loving memory of our mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, dedicated Northwood volunteer, and a friend to many. This community space is the heart of Northwood. On behalf of the Bond Family, we want to thank you for considering a gift to this campaign that will help make the Joyce Bond Centre a reality.

Foundation Sponsor Spotlight
JACK 92.9 – Creates Ripple Effect of Giving Back
During the Holiday Season, I am ever-so grateful to our Sponsor JACK 92.9 and Rogers for creating their grass-roots Christmas Cards Campaign for Northwoodspreading cheer and joy throughout the holidays. Each year Griff and Caroline ask their listeners to remember someone in our Northwood community by sending a card during the holiday season.
Many have heard the call: teachers, church groups, dance leaders – the list is long! It’s now become a tradition and many even send photos of their pets too!
On the days that I wonder if I am still making a difference for Northwood – I am always reminded of a visit to deliver cards at our Halifax campus. I knocked on the door of a resident to see if I could come in to give her some cards.
She was so happy to see me, and welcomed me in. We had a lovely chat, and she shared that she had no family to visit her this year and she would be alone over the holidays.
When I passed her the cards, she gratefully took them and held my hand to thank me – and then she said “these cards are JUST ENOUGH. You have no idea how much it means to be remembered.”
I did all I could to compose myself during our visit, but
after leaving her room, I wept. I will never forget those two words. JUST ENOUGH.
It’s hard to express how thankful we are to our JACK 92.9 family for creating this ripple effect of caring by also embracing Northwood’s Giving Tree program along with the campaign. It has made us all think differently about the smallest gesture of kindness.
Giving back looks different for everyone. You see, giving back is not all about money. It’s about caring for others. It’s about compassion and love. It’s about being JUST ENOUGH.

Northwood resident, Cindy Tingley has third book in series published
On November 1, OC Publishing published the next story in Northwood resident’s Cindy Tingley’s bible story series for children, Lily’s Egypt Adventure.
In this book, the third installment in the series of first chapter books, Lily the donkey, continues her travels with the Holy Family as they depart Bethlehem in the dark of night to escape the clutches of King Herod who has put out a decree to execute all male children in Bethlehem under the age of two (known as the Massacre of the Innocents).
After crossing the desert, they arrive in Egypt and Lily’s Egypt Adventure unfolds as new and old
animal friends join the entourage and learn and share lessons of love, kindness, and forgiveness.
“I think young readers will relate to my main character, a feisty carrot-munching donkey who began the series with low self-esteem and now feels more confident as she learns more about the power of love,” says Tingley.
The Lily the Donkey’s Adventures series is available from most online retailers and can be ordered into any local bookstore.
For more information on Cindy and her books, visit https://www.ocpublishing.ca/ cindy-tingley.html.
