Adult Day
Gerald is a participant in the Adult Day Programs at Northwood in Sackville. The Northwood Foundation is grateful to Judi for sharing her Alzheimer’s journey with us to help others who may also be struggling with the life changes that dementia can bring to families.“Ilost my dancing partner, and the love of my life when Gerald was diagnosed with Early-Onset Dementia.“Ihavecome to hate this dreaded disease, a memory monster and love larcenist. It might have taken ‘us’ away, all that we could be together, but I refuse to allow it to take away me.
A Journey with Judi and Gerald
“This past February I got a call from the Northwood Adult Day Program in Sackville to tell me they were opening their programs to the community. There was an opening for “DonationsGerald!tothe Northwood Foundation have helped both of us. They have given me the chance to find a new purpose in my days. The staff share information about workshops, and education sessions in our area that have helped too.
“I no longer feel lost. Northwood helped me find ‘me’ again. You never know when your generosity will help support someone you love through Northwood’s many programs, like Adult Day did for me and my Gerald. You may not think that you will ever need special programs to help you through difficult days that may lie ahead. I never thought I would.
Victoria Loureiro, one of the Recreation Therapy students, explains how they spend their days, “In the morning, we go to one floor (because we are usually assigned to two floors) and provide activities for that floor, and in the afternoon, we’d go to the other floor and do activities there.” Bijou Allen, another student, describes her experience so far, “[It’s been] really good … to the point where I want to be an LTCA during the school year.” She says her favourite part of the job is “… knowing that I can have a positive impact on [the residents’] day.”
Victoria says her favourite part is “Engaging with the residents and getting to know them. Rec. Therapy isn’t just providing activities for them to do, it’s actually interacting with them and getting to know them. I know so many people now and their stories … which is really nice.”
Music Coordinators, explains what her position entails, “As a music coordinator, I play music for the folks, I facilitate musical activities like the jam band and the dances. I help the other students with the other sorts of activities that are not music related.” When asked to describe a typical day she replies, “It’s never typical, and that’s what I love about it.” She describes this job as “the best job [she’s] ever had”. “Ditto,” Ilan Mendel, another Music Coordinator, echoes. He goes on to explain “The people are really nice; the environment is very laidback. It’s kind of interesting to see as a musician, they really appreciate what we do and that’s really nice. You can see that they’re enjoying theWhenprograms…”askedabout each of their favourite parts of the job, Reade reflects, “The fact that I’ve been able to learn so much here … In such a short amount of time, I’ve learned so many things. Like how bingo works. I never knew all of the intricacies of bingo! Even jobs that look simple on the outside, can be very complicated on the inside.” While Ilan remarks, “I really like playing for them, and seeing how much they enjoy and appreciate it … they really like it … and they’re very happy.”
The DevelopmentCommunityWorkers and Music Coordinators in Community Recreation have spent their summers helping to organize programs, for example, bingo every Monday, Almon Place and Two Manor teas and booking tenants in for the Cycling Without Age program. They have also been helping with events like

Work underway once again to provide augmented behavior support area
Work, which began in 2019, is once again underway to create a care area to provide augmented behavior support for those living with the behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia. The Northwood Foundation supported the completion of a new roof top patio and garden along with a new lounge and programming space on 1 C Chestnut Lake. Now, the Northwood team is building a program plan and was the successful applicant for the central zone one year pilot funding! Over the next few months, the Chestnut Lake team will be expanded, and innovative supportive technology will be purchased and implemented to support care planning and therapeutic recreation.
