Mary Goodrich, Director of NYA Summer Programs goodrich@nya.org | 207.847.5458

CAMP STAFF

The majority of our camp staff are recruited from NYA, the local community and colleges. Many of our Lead Instructors are trained teachers and all have extensive experience working with youth. Junior Counselors are high school or college students who assist instructors to provide our high quality program. They all share one thing - a passion to work with children and to make our campers’ experience really great! All staff are required to have a personal interview with the Director of Summer Programs, have references verified, and must pass a criminal background check before they work with campers. All staff and partner organizations participate in a safety orientation before the summer begins.

Please see page 22 for a statement about COVID-19 and NYA’s guidelines.

Blain performs in group acts such as Chinese Pole, Juggling, Wall Trampoline, and general acrobatics. Blaine has this to say about his NYA camp staff team, “All of the instructors I hire, I vet personally. All of them are past or current circus students, many, if not all, I have trained personally for years and have been a part of my coaching staff for years. I have a long hierarchy process of students, coaches in training, coaches, and then lead coaches. With that said, the staff may change slightly from year to year but remains largely the same. Maine Circus Arts operates exclusively for the circus summer camp at NYA each year.”

COVID-19 & Camp COVID-19 STATEMENT While much is unknown about where we will be in June with regards to COVID-19, we will continue to follow state guidance on health and safety. At North Yarmouth Academy this year, I was a part of the Health and Safety committee that worked diligently to safely open our school full time to our students. We did a lot of research, listening and learning. We put into place several safety measures to help reduce the risk of transmission on campus. These measures included: • • • • • • • •

Following all CDC, national, state and local recommendations and requirements Measuring all spaces in each building on campus and determining a capacity limit based on 6 foot spacing between people. Reducing class sizes and spacing out chairs and tables so that students and teachers could remain socially distanced at 6 feet apart. Requiring masks to be worn at all times while on campus except while outside, seated and socially distanced. Placing hand sanitizer in all classrooms and at all entrance and exit points in each building. Sanitizing tables and chairs between classes. Daily screening before school to include temperature check and COVID-19 screening questions. Creating a Health and Safety Action Agreement to be signed by all students, staff, parents and NYA community members agreeing to commit to keeping our community safe by following all CDC, national, state and school recommendations and guidelines, including limiting travel out of state.

We all want our lives to be back to normal as soon as possible, but will continue to take the necessary precautions to protect our campers and staff from the transmission of the virus. All campers and parents will be required to follow any safety guidelines that are in place and will be required to sign two documents regarding COVID-19 prior to camp. If you have any questions regarding NYA’s safety practices and policies please do not hesitate to reach out. We look forward to a fun and safe summer!

CAMPER ABILITIES & CAMP ATTENDANCE We welcome campers of differing abilities and will do our best to accommodate any special needs. However, please be aware that our typical staff ratios do not allow us to work with campers who require constant one-on-one guidance. Certain camp sessions also require different levels of physical/mental ability for campers to be successful. If you have questions about how your camper’s specific abilities will affect their camp experience, please contact the Director of Summer Programs to discuss the situation and devise a plan that will be beneficial for everyone. Campers in Panther Cub Tots sessions (ages 2-3) do not need to be potty trained to attend camp sessions. Before & After Care is a well-supervised and loosely structured time outside the normal camp program time. With a camp session registration, this is offered FREE of charge as a courtesy to our campers and their families. Before Care - 7:30-8:30 a.m. After Care - 3:00-5:30 p.m. Campers bring lunch and snacks from home. See Family Handbook for full packing list.
