Founded in 1814, North Yarmouth Academy is one of the oldest private, college preparatory day schools in the state of Maine. Its beautiful historic campus is located on 25 acres in downtown Yarmouth, Maine, only 10 miles north of Portland. NYA’s Summer Programs offer children ages 2 through 16 the chance to experience the dynamic learning opportunities and individualized growth that are the hallmarks of an NYA education. MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR Thank you for your interest in North Yarmouth Academy’s Summer Programs! NYA offers a variety of day camp opportunities, from themed general sessions to specific sports programs, for children ages 2-16. Your child will have fun, meet friends, and learn new things under the direction of our highly experienced and trained summer staff. Some highlights of the GREAT value you receive with our Summer Programs are: • •

Most sessions are led or supervised by trained and experienced educators or run by partner organizations with expertise in their field. Junior counselors round out our camp staff team. FREE Before Care from 7:30 – 8:30 a.m. and FREE After Care from 3:00 – 5:30 p.m. Full day camp sessions run from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. That’s a full day of childcare when you register your child for a session! Half day camp sessions run from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and can take advantage of FREE Before Care. Early Bird pricing for those who register by April 15, 2017. Camp Staff:
The majority of our camp staff are recruited from NYA and the local community and colleges. Many of our Lead Instructors are trained teachers and all have extensive experience working with youth. Junior Counselors are high school or college students who assist instructors to provide our high quality program. They all share one thing - a passion to work with children and to make our campers’ experience really great! All staff are required to have a personal interview with the Director of Summer Programs, have references verified, and must pass a criminal background check before they work with campers. All staff and partner organizations participate in a safety orientation before the summer begins.

Panther Cub & Panther Cub Tots Camp For ages 2 to 5 PANTHER CUB & PANTHER CUB TOTS CAMP
NYA’s Panther Cub Camp offers a full or half day camp experience to children ages 3-5. Panther Cub Tots Camp offers a half day camp experience to children ages 2-3. Full Day sessions run from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with the options of FREE Before Care from 7:30-8:30 a.m. and FREE After Care from 3:00-5:30 p.m. Half Day sessions run from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. with the option of FREE Before Care from 7:30-8:30 a.m. All programs are based in NYA’s Lower School building and will be led by experienced staff. Panther Cub and Panther Cub Tots are two separate camp sessions. Although they may sometimes participate in activities together, they will have two sets of staff and be housed in different classrooms. The daily schedule for each camp remains very similar from week to week, but each week is centered around a different theme designed to help children explore the world around them. With a camp session registration, this is offered FREE of charge as a courtesy to our campers and their families. Before Care runs from 7:30-8:30 a.m. and After Care runs from 3:00-5:30 p.m. Campers bring a lunch, two snacks, and water bottle from home. Every Friday for all campers is Water Day! Campers bring swimsuits and towels and get to spend the morning running through sprinklers and having all kinds of fun with water. POTTY TRAINING: • Panther Cub campers must be potty trained. • Panther Cub Tot campers do not need to be potty trained. Please note that there are NO camp sessions running the week of July 17-21, 2017 because of the Yarmouth Clam Festival, which takes place on the NYA campus. Campers will get the chance to spend time outside, planting their own flowers and vegetables. They will also learn about different types of farm animals.

SUPER SUMMER DAY CAMP Our signature day camp for children ages 6-12 offers something for everyone. All programs are based in NYA’s Middle School building with plenty of time spent outside on NYA’s beautiful campus. Camp is designed to foster friendships, learning, teamwork, and of course, fun! Each week, campers participate in rotations of traditional day camp activities like: sports and games, arts and crafts, water fun, beginning archery, and nature hikes. Campers will be split into groups by age (approximately 15 campers with two counselors assigned to each group). Large group games and a weekly special event add to the fun! It’s going to be an unforgettable summer – we can’t wait to have you share it with us! Full Day sessions run from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with the options of FREE Before Care from 7:30-8:30 a.m. and FREE After Care from 3:00-5:30 p.m. The daily schedule for each camp remains the same from week to week but specific activities offered will vary. We have a large number of campers who return for multiple weeks, so activities will be rotated to keep campers engaged and interested every day of every week! These are specialty camps designed to appeal to the creative and artistic side of campers! Our arts and performing arts programs emphasize both product and process. We support the personal and artistic growth of all children and encourage campers to explore the world around them as they develop their own style and means of self-expression. We foster a sense of community among our students as we share our work and learn from each other. Daily schedules will be organized differently depending on the instructors and the activities offered, but campers will have the opportunity to spend time outside in between specialty activities. Age eligibility ranges from 5-16 years, depending on the specialty, so be sure to check each session closely. All programs are based on NYA’s beautiful campus and are instructed by staff with expertise in the specialty or by one of our partner organizations. Campers should come each day with a lunch, two snacks, comfortable shoes, sunscreen, and a water bottle. Because we are so active each day, please be sure campers dress comfortably and appropriately for the weather, as well as for the specialty activity in which they are participating (see Family Handbook for detailed packing list). This camp is designed for children new to theater who want to learn more or could use a boost of confidence. Campers will use a variety of techniques, such as pantomime, puppetry and role playing, to bring a Fairy Tale character to life for the week. Campers will also learn about staging and putting a show together. This camp culminates with a performance Friday afternoon for family and friends. Abracadabra Productions (NYA partner) Session 5: July 10 – 14 Session 7: July 31 – August 4 Cost: $350, Ages: 6 - 16 Welcome to a magical week in a not-so-typical summer camp! Campers will learn the art of magic through lessons in misdirection, timing, developing a routine, and showmanship. They will learn how to craft their own props, teamwork, and self-confidence through public speaking. Creativity and storytelling will also be explored. Card tricks, coin tricks and even feats of mind-reading will be explained in great detail. A part of each day will be dedicated to viewing video footage of present and past masters, helping your camper discover the many facets and performance styles of this great hobby. You will be invited to see a live performance showcasing all the hard work during the Grand Gala Magic Show on Friday. Does your child tap his/her toes constantly? Do you find your children dancing around the room when they think no one is watching? This is the camp for them! Each day will be spent learning a new dance style (ballet, contemporary, jazz, and hip hop), discussing good nutrition, exploring the relationship between music and dance, learning how to dance with a partner and in a group, and how to copy those awesome dance moves they see on TV! At the end of the week, there will be a performance showcase for friends & family. Daily activities will include: stretching, dance class, crafting, performance showcase preparation, and a media viewing of great dance performers. This camp will take your dancer’s experience to the next level and is ideal for students enrolled in dance classes throughout the year or that have completed the “So You Think You Can Dance Camp.” We will further explore ballet, jazz, modern, and hip hop dance techniques, the history of each style, choreography skills, and more. Campers will be encouraged to explore their dance vocabulary, improvisation skills, dance composition knowledge, build their self- confidence, and to work with their fellow campers to put together a dance showcase. Whether this is a child’s first exposure to circus basics or they are ready to delve deeper into specific skill development, professional circus artists are on hand to help every student find their path into the ring. Aerial silks, acrobatics, juggling, human pyramids, and performance techniques are just some of the activities campers will have the opportunity to explore. We recommend two back-to-back weeks, if at all possible, to give students a deeper immersion in circus arts training, and a chance to find their delight. Students will be divided into smaller groups based on prior experience and ability; instructors will meet each individual at their own ability level, whether beginning, intermediate or advanced. Each student will receive individualized attention and enjoy the chance to personalize their training according to their goals. More advanced students will have the opportunity to schedule private lessons throughout the summer and students can also sign up for advanced sessions at the Circus Maine facility at Thompson’s Point in Portland. All children will be given some outdoor time and other activity to balance the physicality of circus training... having fun can be an intense workout! Your kids will make astounding progress in a matter of days. Each session ends with a Friday afternoon on-campus exhibition open to family and friends. This camp offers ideal physical conditioning and flexibility development for kids of all ages and is also useful for dancers, gymnasts and athletes. Students with an interest in the theatre and drama will find circus arts useful for developing dramatic style and showmanship. BRIXOLOGY & ENGINEERING Mad Science of Maine (NYA partner) Session 8: August 7-11 Cost $385, Ages: 6 - 12
Get ready for the Bridges, Bricks, Blast-Off Brigade! Campers step into the shoes of engineers in this Mad Science FUN’gineered camp full of rockets, wacky machines, flying devices, roller coasters, and Bricks! We have merged two days of our BRIXOLOGY program with three days of our Adventures in Engineering Camp to inspire our next generation of makers in mechanical, structural, aerospace, and nautical engineering. With these programs combined, your future engineer will use their creativity to solve real-world design challenges. In the BRIXOLOGY portion, children will have the opportunity to use LEGO® bricks to build engineering-themed projects related to machines and boats. Children will also build skyscrapers and bridges. Blast off a variety of rockets propelled by model engines, air, and water. Discover Newton’s Laws of Motion with Co2 powered dragsters and test team car designs on our 8 foot egg crasher apparatus! Our sports camps are designed to encourage students to develop the disposition needed for good sportsmanship, leadership, and teamwork in an atmosphere of fun! Students will benefit from the expertise of seasoned coaches and players who bring their extensive knowledge and passion for sports to a variety of activities. GIRLS FIELD HOCKEY
Session 2: June 19 - 23, 8:30 am – 3:00 pm Cost: $325, Ages: 10 - 14 The goal of this camp is the development or improvement of sound field hockey skills and understanding of the game in a fun and safe environment. Campers will develop and utilize their interpersonal skills as they work with other campers to problem solve, think creatively, and support each other. Players will learn individual skills, starting with how to hold a field hockey stick and progressing to dribbling, shooting, dodges, and individual defense. We will also work on team skills such as passing, team defense, corners and much more. Players will have a chance to develop and improve their field hockey ability through drills and games. This camp would be great summer preparation for middle school players or girls entering their first year of high school. *Campers should plan to bring their own running/turf shoes or cleats, shin and mouth guards, goggles, and field hockey stick for this session. Session 5: July 10 - 14, 8:30 am – 3:00 pm Cost: $325, Ages: 10 - 14 This camp is designed to help boys develop sound lacrosse fundamentals. Players will learn both individual skills and team concepts, starting with passing, catching and ground balls and advancing to shooting, dodging, and team concepts like defensive slides and offensive play. The players will learn throughout the day as they work hard and have fun in the process. *Campers should plan to bring their own running/turf shoes or cleats, mouth guards, goggles, helmet, and lacrosse stick for this session. Global Premier Soccer-Maine (NYA Partner) Session 3: June 26-30 Session 6: July 24-28 Full Day Cost $325, Half Day Cost $175 Ages: 7 - 14 In this comprehensive soccer program, campers will focus on a different aspect of the game each day, including passing and receiving, ball control, attacking/ defending principles, and shooting. The camp will conclude with a mini World Cup tournament on Friday and a Coaches Challenge will be run where the students will compete against their coaches with prizes on the line. Global Premier Soccer-Maine (NYA Partner) Session 2: June 19-23 Cost $110 Ages: 3 -6 This program teaches the fundamentals of soccer using a fun and energetic curriculum that has been tailored to work with 3-6 year olds. The curriculum facilitates the development of motor and coordination skills. All sessions are held in a fun and positive environment, where players are encouraged to play with a smile on their face. Every child is taken on an adventure with the ball. This session is one hour in length and parents/guardians are required to remain on campus for the duration of the camp (unless camper is also part of NYA’s Panther Cub camp that week). This camp is designed to help kids enjoy the great sport of tennis at a young age. During the week we will focus on the basics of tennis and incorporate drills and games that will develop skills and provide plenty of fun in the process. MIDDLE SCHOOL TENNIS Session 7: July 31 - August 4 Cost: $325, Ages: 10 - 14
This camp is intended for middle school tennis players of all abilities. We will provide a strong base of fundamentals for the beginner as well as the strategy and instruction needed for advanced players to be able to further their game. Time each day will focus on improving form and stroke techniques as well as strategy and match play. Girls on the Run Maine (NYA Partner) Session 6: July 24- 28 Full Day Cost $325, Half Day Cost $175 Ages: 8 - 11* Camp GOTR inspires girls to be joyful, healthy and confident through a variety of creative and interactive outlets. Each day, girls explore a life skills topic through physical activity, collaborative games and creative expression, including writing, acting and art. The program culminates with a celebratory event where families can share in the girls’ accomplishments by joining them in a one-mile fun run and a creative showcase of their original work from the program. Girls will gain skills to navigate their world, improve their health and confidence, make friends and have fun. The Camp GOTR curriculum will take place in the morning, with all full and half day campers. Campers who choose to stay the full day will join NYA’s Super Summer Day Camp for afternoon activities and games. *Campers must be entering 3rd-5th grade for this camp session. COUNSELOR IN TRAINING (CIT) Safe Sitter (NYA Partner) Session 3: June 26 - 30 Cost $325, Ages: 13-14
If your camper loves to be around younger children and has shown an interest in babysitting, this is the perfect camp! It’s designed for campers who are craving more responsibility and are ready to begin the transition from camper to camp staff member. Campers will participate in a curriculum designed by the national program Safe Sitter and will end the week with a certificate in safe babysitting. The camp includes training in skills like: safety, childcare, first aid and rescue, and life and business. There will also be plenty of time to interact with and practice skills as the CITs work with the campers in the Super Summer Day Camp (SSDC) group. This will be a fun session for campers to build their skills and work toward a future caring for children! Session also includes a trip to Maine Wildlife Park in Gray with the SSDC group. SUMMER PROGRAMS
REGISTRATION INFORMATION REGISTRATION Summer Program registrations are accepted online at www.nya.org via the ACTIVE registration system. There is an $85 non-refundable deposit per session required at time of registration. Registrations are not considered complete until full payment and required forms have been received. Final balances and forms are due two weeks before session start date. Registration must be complete before a student can participate in a program. Registration for sessions closes the Wednesday before the session starts, if spots are still available. Full payment and forms are due at time of registration. Registrations after this date are considered late and you will need to contact the Director of Summer Programs to request to register late. This also applies to those wishing to switch sessions. Every camper gets a FREE t-shirt with first registration! WAIT LIST All Summer Programs are subject to maximum enrollment. When a program is full, a family can join the waitlist at no charge. If/when a spot becomes available, families will be notified and moved from the waitlist onto the attendance list. DISCOUNTS There is an Early Bird discount of $25 ($50 for Circus Arts) for registrations received by April 15, 2017. NYA offers a 10% discount to campers who sign up for two or more sessions of camp at the same time. This discount will automatically be applied to your balance when you register. CANCELLATION & REFUND POLICY All Summer Programs are subject to minimum and maximum enrollment. If for any reason a program is canceled, parents will be notified in advance and given the option of a full refund or switching the registration to another session. All requests for withdrawal must be in writing and received on or before the dates referenced below in order to receive a refund. A full refund, less the non-refundable deposit of $85 per session, will be given for cancellations received 21 days prior to the program start date. A partial (50%) refund, less the non-refundable deposit, will be given for cancellations received less than 21 days prior to the program start date. No refund will be given for cancellations received less than 7 days prior to start date. NYA cannot refund after start of session for absences due to minor illness/ injury, family schedule changes, forgotten registrations, behavioral concerns, etc. In cases of serious illness/injury or family emergencies, NYA will evaluate on a case-by-case basis and may issue a prorated or full refund, less the deposit. A doctor’s note may be required to receive any refund. Withdrawal notices may be sent by e-mail to the Director of Summer Programs (summer@nya.org) or mailed to: NYA Summer Programs, 148 Main Street, Yarmouth, Maine 04096. CAMPER ABILITIES We welcome campers of differing abilities and will do our best to accommodate any special needs. However, please be aware that our typical staff ratios do not allow us to work with campers who require constant one-on-one guidance. Certain camp sessions also require different levels of physical/mental ability in order for campers to be successful. If you have questions about how your camper’s specific abilities will affect their camp experience, please contact the Director of Summer Programs to discuss the situation and devise a plan that will be beneficial for everyone. Campers age 2-3 do not need to be potty trained in order to attend camp sessions.
