From prehistoric times to now, the moustache has evolved from a roughly hewn block of hair into a genuine work of art. An artist needs his tools, however, and over the years moustache connoisseurs have found help in a long parade of tools and accessories beginning with sharpened rocks and evolving to include waxes, scissors, razors, snoods (a moustache net used while sleeping), moustache cups (special drinking cups), and host of others.
Meanwhile, the popularity of the moustache in society has been a long journey full of ups and downs. Just when it seems that the ‘stache has been resigned to the realm of fops and rogues (or, in modern times, porn stars), a cultural revolution will swing the pendulum back and usher in a new day for moustaches. Regardless of its current standing in popular culture, the moustache will always be fashionable among those who can see through the fuzz and truly appreciate its subtle charms. This zine is for them.
As any dedicated moustache grower will tell you, however, it’s not so important what kind of moustache you got but how you wear it. Really the only thing one should absolutely not forget before leaving the house is self-confidence, which allows anyone to pull off even the most absurd costume.
Shaving and grooming basics Growing a full beard and moustache is recommended before trying most styles. It’s always preferable to shave after a hot shower, for a closer and comfortable shave. The dry shave A dry shave is a quick and easy alternative to a wet shave. While not as comfortable or close as a wet shave, it works.
The wet shave Prepare and apply your shaving cream, gel, soap, or foam of choice. If using a shaving brush, apply the cream in circular motion. Otherwise, massage it into your beard with your fingers. Heat the razor under warm running water. Draw a line in the cream where you want your sideburns to end. Generally this is just above the bottom of your ear. Begin at the cheeks, shaving in the same direction that your facial hair grows. Shave only about 2 inches at a time, then rinse the blade under warm water.
After the shave Rinse with cold water to close up facial pores. If using aftershave, pat it on with your hands and allow to air dry.

There’s no trick to growing a ‘stache – all you have to do is stop shaving. Styling a look you’ll be proud of, on the other hand, takes a little knowhow. Twist, wax, snip, or trim – just imagine your whiskers as a clean palette on which to create your brilliant masterpiece. Despite their undisputable superiority, even moustaches get lonely sometimes. Luckily, there are sideburns, goatees, soul patches, and beards to keep a lonesome ‘stache company. No matter what style you wear or what outfit you put on, the most important thing is to have fun with your moustache.
