Getting Around The Halls
We have two main halls: St Andrew's Hall and Blackfriars' Hall. In addition to these, we also have the cloisters and a marquee. Both St. Andrew's Hall and Blackfriars' Hall have real ale bars in them.
Getting Around
The Blackfriars’ Hall will have Norfolk beers and will also have games up on the stage throughout each session. St Andrew’s Hall will have all the other real ales (national), arranged in approximately alphabetical order by brewery. Although this system breaks down during the week as the beers are restocked into vacant spaces, but we do our best to keep them in the right area of the stillage (as we call the structure the beer casks are stored on). Remember not all beers are on sale at once; some quickly sell out, others take time to be ready to serve. Some we have only a small amount of. You can see an updated list of the beers by visiting norwichcamra.org.uk/bf St Andrew’s is also where you will find the Cider Bar, where traditional ciders, perries, wine and apple juice are all available. Continuing on from 2017, we are offering mead on the Cider Bar. In the
4 B
Marquee you will find bottled and keg beer from around the world as well as a some keg gluten free beer.
Gluten Free & Vegan
We have increased our gluten free range this year. Look out for GF on the labels on the casks. Please see the beer list on page 30 or cask cards for our beers that are gluten free or vegan.
Seating
Seating is available in the Marquee and Cloisters. During the lunchtime session seating is also available in Blackfriars' and the main hall.
Access Cask Beer All areas are accessible,
Food & Soft Drinks
Food is provided by Expresso and is available from Blackfriars’ Hall. Oddfellows will be providing their chocolate goods from the bar between the two halls. Basic soft drinks are available for free on all bars. Premium speciality soft drinks are available from the marquee, and you will also find apple juice at the cider bar. Important for any designated drivers!
Membership
The Membership staff will be pleased to answer your questions about CAMRA, sign you on as a new member so you qualify for the Norwich Beer Festival offer (ask for details or see page 74) and to explain about our range of social activities and what you can add to CAMRA as a volunteer.

3 simple steps to getting started Step 1 Getting in At the front of the queue you will need to pay your entrance fee, hand over your advance ticket or show your CAMRA membership card. All of these methods will gain you entrance to the Festival.
Getting Started
Step 2 Get a glass & beer card. As you enter, on your left you will find the glasses counter where you will need to purchase a Beer Card to pay for your beer. You may also buy Beer Cards in the World Beer Bar. Please be aware that the bars do not take cash. You will also be able to purchase a souvenir beer glass to drink from. To get you started we offer the glass and £7 Beer Card for £10 (£3 payment for the glass). Anything that you do not spend is refundable and if you do not wish to take your glass with you when you leave, we will refund the £3 also. If you do intend to spend more than £7 you may ask the cashier for as many extra £5 or £10 Beer Cards that you think you will require. If you have your money ready before you approach the glasses stand this will help us keep the queues down and you to get your beverage quicker! Step 3 Get a drink! Go to the bar near where you see the drink you wish to purchase and ask the bar staff for the amount that you wish. All of our glasses offer thirds, halves and pints. To pay, you hand over the Beer Card to the bar staff, who will cross off the appropriate amount. You may return to the Glasses stand at any point to buy more cards or you can also purchase these at the World Beer Bar.

CAMRA: RESPONSIBLE DRINKING CAMRA actively promotes responsible drinking and recognises the harmful effects of high levels of alcohol consumption. We want everyone to enjoy the Norwich Beer Festival responsibly and safely. For most, moderate alcohol consumption is compatible with a healthy lifestyle. So why not consider ordering your beer in thirds this year? All our official festival glasses are marked with third of a pint lines. This means you can enjoy a greater variety of beers while managing your consumption. For more information about responsible drinking visit: www.drinkaware.co.uk

42nd Norwich Beer Festival
A welcome from CAMRA Craig Harmer Festival Organiser
Welcome
Hello! I wish you all a warm welcome to the 42nd Norwich Beer Festival. With Norwich Beer Festival being one of the biggest social events in Norwich each year, I am looking forward to continuing the success of our 41st Festival. I believe that a beer festival is a great opportunity to introduce people to real ale or for those that already enjoy it, to try some new beers. Last year we added a new bar called the Curiosity Bar. This bar had a wide range of different ales all new to the festival. This was a huge success and so this year we have doubled its size, there is a limited supply of each so make sure you get some whilst you can. We do of course also have the usual large range of real cider along with our marquee housing our World Beer and Keg Bar. We are also continuing to offer a selection of mead and wine, which can be found at the Cider Bar. We have also increased the amount of gluten free beer that we have available. New this year you will find two special bays in St Andrew's Hall. Firstly, is a bay which features beers which have been racked in wood casks instead of the usual steel. This gives the beers a different and many say superior flavour - thanks the the Society for the Preservation of Beers from the Wood (SPBW) for their help in sourcing these beers. Secondly, we have decided each year to feature a specific area of the UK with this year being beer from Sheffield. This year’s charity is NANSA. You can find their stand in the Blackfriars’ Hall, so please pay them a visit while at Norwich Beer Festival. Finally I would like to thank all the volunteers for their hard work. Whether it’s doing a session or two behind the bar or working all week or helping with the planning (which goes back as far back as January!), the festival wouldn’t function as it does without every single one of them. If you fancy the idea of volunteering at the festival just ask any member of staff about how to get involved. Thank you for attending and I hope you all enjoy the Norwich Beer Festival.
10
Ian Stamp N&N CAMRA Chairman Welcome to the 42nd Norwich Beer Festival! I hope you enjoy your visit, or hopefully visits, as a lot of people have worked very hard to make the Festival happen - did you know we have over 350 people working at the event in total, over the ten days from setting up all the equipment and beer, to taking it all down again on the Sunday - and none of them are paid a penny! (although a little beer may be consumed in recompense). If you would like to give a little back, and have a few hours on Sunday 26th, we'd love a little more help to clear the Halls - it's not all heavy lifting by any means, and if you arrive before 10.30am (we start at 9am) and stay until we're clear at about 3.30pm, we'll give you a free Sunday roast and couple of pints at the St Andrews Brewhouse!
Cask Beer
I'm sure Craig will have told you all about the changes we're making at the Festival this year, so as Chairman of the organising branch of CAMRA, Norwich & Norfolk, I thought I'd give you a quick update on Branch activities. We have over 4,000 members, and an extensive socials programme, with at least three or four events each month, including regular pub crawls in Norwich and coach tours in the county. We also run the Pub of the Year competition (congratulations to this years Pub of the Year, the Leopard!), and select entries for the Norfolk section of the Good Beer Guide. For more details, please join CAMRA, and if you're a member, make sure your email is up to date, and your preferences allow us to email you! Our magazine Norfolk Nips, shared with the other Norfolk branches, has a print run of 12,000 every quarter, and has a fresh new look this year - if you can't find it in your local, please get in touch with us via nipsdistribution@norwichcamra.org.uk and we'll try to get some delivered. Finally, please give generously to our charity this year, NANSA, who have been helping people with physical, sensory and learning difficulties for over 60 years oh, and if you’d like to volunteer for a session or two, please just speak to any steward or other volunteer, or contact staffing@norwichbeerfestival.org.uk. Enjoy!

Our Volunteers
42nd Norwich Beer Festival
Over the last 42 years we’ve seen a huge increase in the number of volunteers that help out at the Norwich Beer Festival. From helping wash glasses to serving drinks, to working on the stewarding team to signing up new members. There are many different voluntary roles that all support the Beer Festival in taking place. Some people return to working at the beer festival for many years (some for all!) and return each year to the same role whereas other will explore the different roles that are on offer. Some of the roles are explained below: On the bar Working on the bar brings you up close and personal to the beers that are on offer and whilst working a trade session gives you the chance to potentially meet the brewers that made a particular beverage or a pub which sells it. It also provides you with the knowledge to be able to discuss with the public the beers on offer. Steward As Stewards our primary job is the ensure the customer and members of staff have a fun, safe and trouble free festival whilst being the first point of contact with the public! Staffing Working behind the scenes in staffing helps to organize the festival and look after people – we’re always looking for new helpers!
16
“lovely, friendly people, a fantastic venue and an amazing atmosphere.” Why do our amazing volunteers help out, you may ask and where do we find them? We have volunteers that are local and some come from further afield. We have Bar Managers from Barnsley, Cellar Team staff from America, Bar Staff from Suffolk, Stewards from Wales plus more who travel! We’ve been described as making new volunteers feel welcome to a beer festival with “lovely, friendly people, a fantastic venue and an amazing atmosphere”. We fully embrace individuality and enjoy when our bar staff have their fancy dress days! Helping volunteer at the Norwich Beer Festival makes you feel a part of the community and everyone makes you feel like you belong. There are many roles available and if you're interested in helping out, please ask any of the volunteers you see working or email us nbfstaffing@yahoo.com

43rd Norwich Beer Festival logo competition The annual competition has been launched by CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) to find the new logo for the 43rd Norwich Beer Festival, taking place from Monday 26th October until Saturday 31st October 2020. The deadline for logo entries is 9pm Monday 10th February 2020 and Norwich & Norfolk CAMRA are looking for innovative designs depicting a dragon of some form. Craig Harmer, Festival Organiser, said:
“The festival logo is a critical element that binds many aspects of the festival together. We always get a wide variety of designs and styles submitted. We're looking forward to receiving themâ€?. As always, the essential element is that a dragon must be included within the design, although abstract is acceptable. Also, a maximum of five solid colours (four is preferable) can be used, including any black or white parts of the design. Entrants are asked to specify "Adult" or "Under-18" and include their name, contact details and age (if under-18) within the email. Visit www.camra.org.uk/privacypolicy for our privacy policy. Judging will by organised by the festival organisers and the winner will receive ÂŁ100 along with a selection of merchandise featuring their logo at the festival. There will be two runner-up prizes of complementary festival tickets, and the best under-18 entrant will receive a voucher.
22
Submitting your entry All entries must be in a standard image format (JPEG, TIFF, PNG, GIF, BMP, or PDF). Vector files are welcome as long as a standard image format is included. Hand drawn entries are acceptable, but must be scanned or photographed. Multiple entries are also acceptable. All entries (and queries) must be emailed to logo@norwichbeerfestival.org.uk and be received before 9pm Monday 10th February 2020. All email entries will be acknowledged. All entries will become the property of the Norwich & Norfolk branch of the Campaign for Real Ale and may be used for display and publicity purposes. The logo of the winner will be depicted on the festival glass, programme, and other merchandise.

42nd Norwich Beer Festival
East Anglian Cider & Perry at Norwich Beer Festival
Cider & Perry
Real cider and perry have been enjoyed in Britain since Roman times. Many people have discovered the delights of these traditional drinks and the rich world of flavours they offer. While methods of production have benefited from modernisation, the basics still stay the same: pick, press, ferment, enjoy! Cider and perry made using these traditional methods are unpasteurised, uncarbonated and full of natural flavour. The taste can be any combination of mellow, aromatic, tangy, sharp, fruity, or tannic, as well as being sweet, medium or dry. These are real flavours, not masked by cold temperature or fizz! All of the well known 'industrial' ciders are not recognised by CAMRA as real traditional cider or perry. Here at Norwich Beer Festival, we'll be once again concentrating on East Anglian ciders & perries. We'll have ciders from new cider makers as well as established makers. New this year at Norwich we are pleased to introduce a selection of WestCountry style ciders produced in our region. This is to show that what the west (Cornwall, to Somerset, to Herefordshire, to Staffordshire) can do, our cider
24
makers can also do. Please ask at the cider bar about the difference in styles. Over the last few years, East Anglian cider makers have won a string of national CAMRA awards. Last year, at CAMRA's National Cider & Perry Championships held in May, Whin Hill's Brown's Cider won National Silver and Whin Hill's Perry won National Bronze. Both awards very well deserved! Each cider & perry on offer will have been graded for sweetness, and this will be indicated on the notices for each product. Here in Norwich, we use the 13 point scale, where 1 is the sweetest, 7 is a medium, and 13 is the driest possible. Along with the grading, taste and appearance attributes such as Sharp, Tannic, Fruity, Clear and Cloudy, will also be indicated. Where a cider or perry is made with a single variety of apple or pear, it will be indicated with "(SV)" at the end of the product name. Please ask the bar staff if you need help deciding, or have any questions, however, when it is busy, we will have less time to help. Please be aware that traditional ciders and perries typically have higher alcohol content than most of the commercial cider you get in pubs or supermarkets, so please drink responsibly and enjoy your time at the festival. Wassail! If you want to make great cider, be sure to practice your wassailing. The English custom, used to appease the deities of the apple trees, was believed necessary to ensure healthy crops. Here's how to honor the spirits: Place a jug of cider or piece of cider-soaked toast on the biggest apple tree. Then sing a chant or song. Finish by banging on kettles and blowing horns to scare away any evil spirits lingering in your orchard. It's that easy.

Kegs
Can a beer that comes from keg be real ale? ‘Real ale’ is sometimes referred to as ‘live beer’. This means the beer has undergone a secondary fermentation in the vessel from which it is served and is dispensed without encountering any additional gas such as CO2. Both parts of this definition contribute to the true real/live ale experience. Secondary fermentation
The beer is brewed and then after its primary chance in the brewery to turn the sugar source (usually malted barley) into alcohol and CO2 it is racked into casks and left for the yeast to continue working its magic. The same happens in bottle conditioned beers. It can also happen in a keg – yes, those things, so if it’s coming out having gone in still fermenting it’s real/live. Some casks can be filled with beer that has already finished its secondary fermentation – we call this ‘bright beer’ so even though the vessel is something
28
familiar the beer is no different to the stuff in the keg. Fear not, we look out for this at festivals and check yeast levels to make sure we haven’t been supplied anything that doesn’t meet the standard.
Served without additional gas.
The casks work on gravity, a hole in the top lets pressure build up and having the tap at the bottom pours the beer. Handpumps use suction to pull beer through lines and out the nozzle. Bottles, you pour them, but kegs? Ask to see a KeyKeg (if you haven’t already), this has the beer in a bag and it is then squeezed out using compressed air – nothing touches the beer, so if it went in still fermenting and comes out without contact with another gas it’s still real/live ale! KeyKegs aren’t perfect, they are difficult to recycle and made largely of plastic, unlike the more environmentally preferable metal kegs and they require a specialist coupler, but if you want your real/live ale out of a keg they’re currently the best bet. NATIONAL BEER St. Andrew's Hall
National Beer
This year we have separated our two main cask beer bars into three lists. National Beers will be in the St Andrews Bar with Norfolk Beers being served in the Blackfriars' Hall. Please be aware that later on in the week we may have beers on in other bars therefore please use our online beer list which is constantly updated: norwichcamra.org.uk/bf When beers are available to be served there will be a card on the cask/stillage which will look similar to this:
Beeston Beeston, Norfolk

Third:

£1.20
Not all of the gluten free and vegan beers available have been marked in the programme so please see the cask cards for either a or to signify if they are gluten free or vegan. For more information regarding allergens, please ask a member of staff behind the bar. The bars are staffed by CAMRA volunteers. Please bear in mind these points of etiquette whilst at the bar: Please be patient if it’s busy. Our staff will get to you, and serve you as quickly as they can. Please speak clearly (but don’t shout). The festival can be a noisy place sometimes so please help the staff by speaking clearly. Please be courteous. Our volunteer staff aren’t paid, and they give their time freely to work at the festival. Pleasantness is appreciated, and really does go a long way when it’s three deep at the bar on a busy night. All beer, cider, & perry lists are correct at time of printing. However, please remember that they are subject to last minute changes, and to products selling out. There is no guarantee of availabilityof a beer/cider/perry throughout the festival.

BEER FROM THE WOOD St. Andrew's Hall
Beers from the wood
For the first time we have decided to have an area of the bar where an array of beers are served from wood casks. For the first time since the 1920's, brewers are now widely experimenting with wood and producing surprising results. We've had a few wood casks in recent years, but it was only when we compared steel and wood casked beer, there was a marked difference in flavour and it wasn’t just nostalgia at work! Differences with a material that was porous, and had maybe contained whisky or wine in a previous life, often provides a highly rewarding drinking experience. Even more surprising, was the differences weren’t confined to darker beers, but to ales across a wide range. Try some, and let us know what you think!

COLLABORATION BEERS St. Andrew's Hall
Collaboration Beers
Norwich Amateur Brewers, as the name suggests, is a group of amateur brewers who meet regularly to swap ideas and information, and taste each others beers. In June 2018 they organised a beer festival at the Coachmakers pub on St Stephens Rd, Norwich, at which over 20 of their beers were available. CAMRA Tasting Panel members judged the beers and selected the winners, who were then paired with commercial brewers, and jointly brewed their beer on a commercial scale. The beers were then showcased at Norwich Beer Festival, and the public invited to judge the winner - with John Lee and Elmtree Brewing being chosen, for their Norwich Surprise Major. The festival, and the collaboration brews, were judged a huge success, and the festival, under the banner NABF19, was held again at the same venue in June this year. Three beers were selected for collaborations, and are again here at Norwich Beer Festival for you to drink and judge. So please try them and score them - we're certain you'll be amazed at the quality! And do look out for Norwich Amateur Brewers Festival 2020!

As Social Secretary for the Norwich and Norfolk branch of CAMRA my role involves organising campaign trips, brewery visits, branch meetings and various other social activities. The regular events that take place within our branch are as follows. On the 1st Friday of every month we visit 5 pubs within Norwich (First Friday Five) and these routes are organised by Adrian Hennessey. In December, we have our Christmas Crawl where we visit about 10 pubs and details can be found on our branch website. Our Branch Meetings are held on the 3rd Thursday of every other month. On the last Friday of every month (excluding October and December) a Campaign Trip takes place where we visit up to 5 rural pubs promoting and drinking real ale and real cider where available. These trips are extremely popular and early booking is advisable to secure a place. I also organise midweek strolls visiting 5 pubs within the City and these are well attended. To offer flexibility these
take place on various days of the week. I also organise midweek lunchtime coach trips which take place on a monthly basis. Alan Edwards also organises cider crawls on an ad-hoc basis and details are available on the branch website. So what have we been up to in the last 12 months? In November we enjoyed an excellent trip to Wibblers Brewery in Southminster despite the trains not being on best behaviour. In December we visited Humpty Dumpty for their open weekend and plan to revisit again this year. In March we travelled to Bull of the Woods Brewery visiting a few pubs in the area. In May we enjoyed the home leg of our summer social visiting North Norfolk and in June we enjoyed the away leg with a weekend in Sheffield. Also in June we had a great trip to Wildcraft for their open weekend. In September we enjoyed our afternoon of bowls at the Caxton Club in Beccles against our friends from Suffolk branches. It was an enjoyable afternoon in which Suffolk retained the Roly Bowly Cup, Also in September I arranged an excellent trip to Beeston
Social Secretary’s Welcome
Welcome to the 42nd Norwich Beer Festival and I hope you enjoy the fine range of beers and cider available served by our excellent team of volunteers. Brewery and Ploughshare. Thanks to Mark for his hospitality and we look forward to comparing the Old Stoatwobbler this week. Earlier this month we enjoyed an excellent trip to Ascot Races and Beer Festival. This is the 8th consecutive year that we have attended this event which is now a well established annual event. I trust this gives you an insight as to the types of activity that as a branch we are involved in and it would be good to see you if you wish to join us on any forthcoming events. To find out more about forthcoming events please refer to Norfolk Nips, our website or pop along to one of our branch meeting in the near future. If you are a CAMRA member and your e-mail details are up to date you should be receiving regular e-mails detailing upcoming events. If you have any suggestions for other events then please let me know and I will see if these can be arranged. Once again, enjoy the festival and hope to see some of you at our branch meetings and social events in the coming weeks and months. Michael Phillips socials@norwichcamra.org.uk

World Beer Keg
42nd Norwich Beer Festival
Welcome to the World Beer Bar, with beers from the UK and rest of the world. Once more my team and I have worked hard to find you some very special beers to tantalise your taste buds and imagination for the World Beer Bar. The success of the timed releases for our very special beers will continue. So expect to see these at 1.30pm and 7.30pm every day. This time we are going to include some very limited bottles we have been able to source from the USA. As part of our USA offering, we have some amazing beers from Hopping Frog; Prairie and Jackie O’s. If dessert beers are your thing then we have something for you, including a range of beers from Decadent. This year we will be one of the few places to have a Fantôme tap running until we sell out. This amazing brewery based in the heart of the Ardennes brews with foraged ingredients and is considered one of the top breweries in Belgium yet is rarely seen outside of Belgium in keg. In bottle we have the brand-new Monks Cellar beer in bottle which is already an award winner. If you are looking for keg, we will release the Guldendraak Calvados beer during one of our timed events.
around the import of some beers alongside costs, we have looked widely in the UK to bring you some delicious beers in foreign styles. This year we are featuring beers from Mad Squirrel, Black Iris, Neon Raptor, Bohem, Calvors, Westerham, Big Drop and many others. We are adding more taps and are trialling, a bottle sharing fridge, these are the larger bottles and you can ask for a 3rd of some or just buy a bottle and share it with friends. We are also going to help raise a bit more money for the charity this year. The marquee will have a new photo area for you to dress up and take photos, all we ask is a small donation to the charity, along with a post with the marquees new Instagram account. I would like to thank everyone involved in getting and serving these beers to you, especially all our volunteers, Beer Gonzo, Calvors, Krafty Braumeister, Cook House Hire and our sponsors: The Belgian Monk. I hope that you will enjoy. Prost! Cheryl Cade World Beer Bar Manager
