WE’RE BACK AND READY to screen the best independent films, bring you iconic guests, and invite you to hear from talented filmmakers. We’re continuing our history of showing fantastic short films by narrowing down a record 761 submissions to this year’s Official Selection for you to enjoy. 2018 means more independent features for you to see; the debut of workshops for aspiring and emerging filmmakers to take part in; and a new awards celebration to announce our category winners. We’re extremely grateful for the continued generous support of our sponsors, partners and festival friends; alongside the ongoing commitment from our team of volunteers and the staff at the venues hosting us across the city. Opening Event: In Conversation with Christopher Eccleston Venue: OPEN We’re kicking off this year’s festival by welcoming actor of stage & screen, Christopher Eccleston for a screening of cult-classic, Shallow Grave followed by an In Conversation hosted by Peter Bradshaw, the Chief Film Critic at The Guardian. Christopher will discuss his acting career which has taken in film roles including 28 Days Later, Thor: The Dark World, Where Hands Touch, and of course his wonderful performance as The Doctor in Doctor Who. While there will also be the opportunity for audience questions during the evening. Shallow Grave (1994) is the debut feature from Danny Boyle, and tells the story of three friends who discover their new flatmate dead, but loaded with cash. When the roommates decide to keep it for themselves; their action sets in motion a destructive chain of events that spiral out of control.

Power in Our Hands Venue: The John Hurt Centre Power in Our Hands is a ground-breaking documentary on the Deaf community’s fight for civil rights, and principally the right to be heard. Directed by Angela Spielsinger, it combines social history and archive film, with contemporary interviews to explore the secret history and heritage of the Deaf community in the UK. From the social scenes of the 1930s, to the 2000 march supporting British Sign Language (BSL) recognition, this film gives an insight into Deaf culture mostly hidden from the hearing world. VFX Masterclass with David Simpson
Women In Film: Directors

In May 2016, Directors UK published Cut Out of the Picture – a study into gender inequality among directors within the UK film industry. It found that despite women making up 49.4% of new entrants in the film industry, only 21.7% of publicly funded films studied were directed by women.
A Sci-Fine City: Come and try out some industry tools for creating believable VFX. Join NUA’s VFX guru David Simpson for a short hands-on session using Nuke and Maya software – the tools the VFX industry uses to create the special effects you’ve seen in Blade Runner 2049 or Star Wars: The Last Jedi. You’ll get to build a shot for a mysterious sci-fi film set in Norwich. Open to anyone who has ever used Photoshop or similar design programs. No need to be familiar with VFX software before. Is Visual Effects Killing Cinema? Venue: Norwich University of the Arts 49 out of the top 50 grossing films of all time are what you’d call VFX films, so it’s no wonder Hollywood continues to feed us superhero and sci-fi themes with variable success. Some people claim VFX has made the industry lazy; while others point out that VFX helps filmmakers tell stories in fresh and inventive ways. Renowned editor, Mark Everson who is best known for cutting TV & Film comedies and documentaries will talk about his experience of the industry so far. The former City College Norwich student will talk about working on TV hits including The Mighty Boosh, Pete Vs Life, and Peep Show; and film successes: Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa, and the acclaimed Paddington & Paddington 2.
Katie McCullough and Ian Bignell from Festival Formula will host this workshop helping you to understand the nature of the festival landscape. They will identify and discuss the different types of festivals that are out there, offer advice on managing expectation, and provide useful tips to prepare you for the competitive festival circuit.

Securing Funds for Your Film Venue: The John Hurt Centre This session will see Lizzie Francke, Senior Development & Production Executive at the BFI‘s Film Fund, and Gary Collins, CEO of Red Rock Entertainment discuss the components of where to look to secure funds for your films; and share their own experiences of securing funding for projects.
