Since 2010, we’ve served a dual purpose: to help those in need of selling gently used items, and to provide great finds for those looking to buy them at bargain prices. We meet the needs of both shoppers and sellers with a large variety of pre-owned, high-quality vintage clothes, furniture, medals, toys, jewellery, paintings, large selection of vinyl records, militaria, fine china and glass.

With special thanks to everyone who works, lives, shops and plays in the unique and independent Norwich Lanes.
The Norwich Lanes are a wonderful mix of historic streets, alleyways, courtyards and open spaces – set just a few steps away from Norwich City Hall.
Built up over several centuries, the Lanes boasts lots of beautiful buildings including some of the finest medieval architecture to be found anywhere in the UK.
Today the Lanes are home to well over 500 independent businesses, including retailers, cafés, restaurants, pubs and bars. You will also find an independent cinema, a community theatre, two museums, several galleries and a whole host of live music venues too.
Mainly pedestrianised, the Lanes offer something for everyone – morning, noon and night. For more information or to find out what’s on and where, please visit our website www.norwichlanes.co.uk

St Andrew’s Hall dates back to the 14th century but in the 70s and 80s it was one of the largest live music venues in the city. Bands such as The Cure, Adam and the Ants and ACDC are just a few of the acts that played there.
Strangers’ Hall is a Grade I listed building which dates back to the 14th century and for many years has been a museum of domestic history. The building is named Strangers’ after a group of Protestant refugees from the Low Countries who settled in Norwich in the 16th century.
Dating back to the 14th century, The Museum of Norwich was once the home of the first Mayor of Norwich and later became the city’s house of correction. Today it showcases the city’s fascinating social and industrial past and one of the finest medieval undercrofts in the county.
At the bottom of Willow Lane, you will find the author and travel writer George Borrow’s house. Famous for the quote “a fine city” while describing Norwich and for penning the books ‘In Lavengro’ and ‘Romany Rye’, George was more
at home with the city’s travelling community and street traders, than the gentry who he schooled with. George retired to Great Yarmouth at the age of 50, where he famously entered a stormy North Sea, with 30 foot waves, to save a lone fisherman’s life.
Originally Nether Newport Street and as recently as 1882 the street was still paved with wood. In recent times St Giles Church became a favourable position for semaphore signalling practice, by soldiers at Britannia Barracks.
For as long as people can remember, St Benedicts Street has been missing the correct apostrophe, to make it St Benedict’s Street. For years it was assumed to be a sign makers error but it turns out to be the work of the then Bishop of Norwich, William Redman, for no recognisable reason at all. Must do better at school.
In the 1700s, hundreds of pubs opened in Norwich and the Lanes had plenty too. One such place was the Blue Bell,
“I never go there without seeing a book I absolutely have to buy; eclectic, thoughtful, and tempting. A must for book lovers!”
— Margaret Atwood
“ e kind of place I dreamt of existing in Norwich when I was growing up.”
— Stephen Fry
“ e Book Hive is a wonder for both books and the soul. Everyone should go there, often.”
— Eimear McBride

which was at the bottom of Lower Goat Lane. One of the pub’s many landlords, William Henry Rush, was fined £2 a time for selling beer well after traditional consumption hours. Today it is the excellent pottery studio, Fire and Flux Ceramics.
Jarrolds’ caretaker Arthur James Dunham, known as Joe, lived on the roof of the London Street store, where he created a beautiful garden with a fish pond and rose garden. Joe lived with his wife Emily and daughters Winifred and Olive.
The property that is a Lanes breakfast, brunch and lunch hotspot, JC Pinto, was formerly known as the Ironmongers Arms – a pub which opened to the public in 1303 – when Edward I was king. In the 1980s/90s former Norwich City midfielder Billy Steele was the landlord. Their annual cricket match against Brambles CC, made legendary status. It was thought to be the only Ironmongers Arms in the UK.
When the Norwich High School for boys was in existence in Upper St Giles, several famous people were tutored there, including Sir John Mills. The former Oscar winner was remembered there well – for breaking the school bully’s nose.

Looking for a good read for Summer 2024?
Henry Layte, proprietor of The Book Hive, gives us his top 5 books of the year so far…
From the author of the ever popular This Hollow land: Aspects of Norfolk
Folklore comes this new title, the first of its kind on the subject. Tolhurst’s exploration of this rich seam of artistic tradition is a beautifully produced volume, lavishly illustrated and deeply researched. A wonderful introduction for both amateur enthusiasts and seasoned art historians.
A debut novel from local boy Perry. It is a gloriously understated look at the lives of people who live on the edge of society, told through the eyes of a young man living in a caravan on an unnamed stretch of Norfolk coast who is ‘adopted’ by a stray racing dog. By turns extremely funny and deeply touching it makes both a brilliant summer read, as well as a story for people looking for something with emotional heft. One of The Book Hive’s picks of 2024!
Two ancient Greek potters decide to put on a play, using the Athenian soldiers captured in a local quarry in Syracuse. These men, they figure, will know more about how the great Athenian playwright Aeschelus should be performed
better than any locals. However their plans have dire consequences…
Written in the author’s own Irish vernacular this is an immensely funny and deeply moving portrait of two mates struggling to fulfill a dream against the odds.
A hard-boiled noir set in a New York that no longer exists (pre crash, pre smartphones). The genius of the book lies in its offering of multiple motives for the mysterious crime at its heart. Some are outwardly, tangibly, ‘criminal’ (real estate corruption) — others are deeply private and ambiguous (a fraying marriage; an estranged father; a desire for solitude). It asks: in the end, which explanation would make these events the greater crime?
This stunner tells the electrifying story of how a new generation of black artists and producers used synths and other new music tech to reinvent R&B, disco and soul from 1978-86. It’s a tale long overdue to be told, and Vass’ writing is infectious: enthusiastic, bouncy and bright with a poetic funkiness — one track is described as having a synth bass as “fat as a kipper tie”!
