2010 NORWICH FOOTBALL MEDIA GUIDE

2010 SEASON OUTLOOK Having just completed its most successful season in over a decade, the Norwich University football team begins defense of its 2009 Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) title this fall. The Cadets ended last year by winning their final eight games to finish with an 8-3 overall record and its first conference championship in the long and storied history of the program. With 17 starters returning to the team this year, head coach Shawn McIntyre is optimistic that 2010 could be another special season. The Cadets return nearly their entire offensive unit from last season’s championship squad, but they will have a couple of huge holes to fill on the defensive side of the ball with the graduation of all-conference standouts Reza Afsarmanesh and Donovan Brown. Afsarmanesh terrorized opposing teams’ offenses last year, piling up team highs in tackles-for-loss (16.5) and quarterback sacks (7.0) en route to being named the ECFC “Defensive Player of the Year.” Brown, who was one of the team’s co-captains and quarterbacked the Cadets’ defense from his strong safety position, topped the club with six interceptions. NU also lost starting cornerbacks E.J. Flannigan and Dan Wilde, but the defense should continue to be strong with a slew of linebackers and defensive linemen returning to the fold.

OFFENSE The Norwich offense, which relied on a high-powered running game last season, figures to be just as dominant on the ground in 2010. The Cadets return their top four rushers from last year, as well as all five of their starting offensive linemen. NU averaged 294.4 rushing yards per contest in 2009, led by Andrew Fulford (703 yards, nine touchdowns) and Orwin Etkins (627 yards, 12 touchdowns). Fulford, who will be a junior this fall, figures to be penciled in as the team’s starting running back. Etkins, who earned MVP honors at the ECFC Championship Game after rushing for 269 yards and five TDs, will be a sophomore in 2009. He authored a pair of 200-yard performances on the ground as a freshman last season, and led the squad with the 13 total touchdowns. Sophomore QB Kris Sabourin, who was thrust into the starting role behind center early last season due Kris Sabourin stepped in at to injuries, will enter this quarterback last season and year’s preseason camp as the helped Norwich reel off eight projected starter. In 10 games straight wins last year, Sabourin led the

6

Andrew Fulford led the Cadets in rushing yards last season team in passing (507 yards) and listed third on the club in rushing (581 yards). Sophomore RB Danny Triplett, who ranked fourth on the team in rushing yards (454) and scored six touchdowns as a freshman last fall, figures to see more playing time this year. Senior RB Kyle Marzeoti, who missed four games due to injury in 2009, is healthy and ready to go this season. Sophomore WR Chris Denton was Sabourin’s favorite target in the passing game in 2009, leading the team in receptions (eight), receiving yards (180) and receiving touchdowns (three). Senior WR Emilio Martinez, who hauled in eight passes for 117 yards last season, is back and ready for a big senior year. Senior tight ends Derek Hungerford and Daniel Pellegrini are both back in the fold this year and should contribute in the passing game as well. The NU offensive line, which opened holes for the running Chris Denton led the Cadets game and protected Sabourin in receptions, receiving yards (five sacks allowed) during the and receiving TDs last year team’s championship run last year, returns completely intact. This group will be led by senior team captain Don Hanni. Fellow seniors Chris Madden, Chris Marden and Jon Thomas help anchor the unit, while junior Rob Sturgis is back for his second year as the team’s starting center.

www.NorwichAthletics.com

2010 SEASON OUTLOOK The Cadets should be strong defensively once again this fall with the return of seasoned veterans Rocco DiMeco, Mike Ohrenberger, Dan Reale, Joe Gumberwicz, Zach Sucharski, Chris Roberto and Charles Stiles. DiMeco, who will serve as one of the team’s captains, led the team last season with 86 tackles while listing second on the squad with 12.0 tacklesfor-loss. Ohrenberger, who will share the team’s captaincy with DiMeco and offensive lineman Dan Reale, making a tackle against New Don Hanni, posted 50 tackles (4.5 York Maritime last season, joins Rocco tackles-for-loss) DiMeco, Mike Ohrenberger and Joe in 2009. Reale and Gumberwicz in the NU linebacking corps Gumberwicz, who played well last year, will join DiMeco and Ohrenberger as the team’s starting linebackers once again this fall. Sucharski and Roberto, who combined for 14.5 tacklesfor-loss a year ago, will help fill the void created on the defensive line by the graduation of Reza Afsarmanesh. The biggest area of concern on the defense is the secondary, following the graduation of Donovan Brown, E.J. Flannigan and Dan Wilde. Senior Charles Stiles, who is a hard-hitting safety adept against both the pass and the run, figures to take over as the leader of the unit. Junior Jeramie Little is one of the early favorites to win one of the cornerback spots after earning

considerable playing time last year.

SPECIAL TEAMS Norwich figures to be quite strong in the kicking game once again this season as the Cadets return last season’s starting punter and kicker. Senior Brian Ryan Kelly (center) is coming off a terrific Segit (33.6 yards per 2009 season punt), and senior Ryan Kelly (3-of-6 field goals/32-of-38 extra points) shared the team’s “Special Team’s Player of the Year” award last year, and both return to the fold. The Cadets have also brought in Long Ding, a junior-college transfer student who possesses a very strong leg. Ding should challenge Kelly for place-kicking and kickoff duties this fall, according to McIntyre.

SCHEDULE Norwich’s current eight-game win streak, which is the second-longest in all of NCAA Division III, will be tested early in the season with non-conference contests versus Western New England, St. Lawrence and Hartwick the first three weeks of September. The Cadets open their conference slate on the final Saturday of September with a road contest at Mount Ida in a rematch of last season’s ECFC Championship Game. NU has never lost to the Mustangs, but MIC has closed the gap in recent years. After a road matchup at Becker, Norwich returns home for backto-back games versus Gallaudet and Husson. Consecutive road contests at Anna Maria and New York Maritime immediately precede NU’s home finale against in-state rival Castleton State.

The Norwich offensive line, which returns completely intact, helped pave the way for the Cadets’ rushing attack last season

HEAD COACH SHAWN MCINTYRE SHA WN MCINTYRE SHAWN HEAD COACH NORWICH ’98 SIXTH SEASON Shawn McIntyre begins his sixth season as the head football coach at Norwich University. Last year, he led the Cadets to the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) title. Norwich ran through the league slate with an undefeated 6-0 mark, and capped the season by trouncing Mount Ida, 49-14, in the inaugural conference championship game. McIntyre was introduced as the 28th head coach of the program in May 2005 after serving as the team’s offensive coordinator during the 2004 campaign. During his time as the offensive coordinator, McIntyre oversaw an offense that featured one of the most prolific passing attacks in the Empire 8 Football Conference. The Cadets racked up 2,256 yards of total offense, and much of that success came through the air with quarterback Matt Meehan passing for over 2,100 yards and 21 touchdowns. Wide receiver Pierre Garcon hauled in 13 scoring grabs and 1,001 yards. Following the season, Garcon was named to the All-Empire 8 first team, the only freshman to make the squad, while Meehan was an honorable mention selection. McIntyre also coached the Norwich baseball team in the spring of 2005. The Cadets finished with a mark of 7-16 and qualified for the GNAC postseason tournament. Sophomore pitcher/outfielder John Healy was named to the All-GNAC second team after batting .428 with 18 RBIs, six doubles and two home runs. During the 2002-03 academic year, McIntyre served as an

assistant coach at another alma mater, Milford (Mass.) High School, coaching both football and baseball. McIntyre’s coaching resume’ also includes stops at Division II Assumption (Mass.) College and Division III programs Amherst (Mass.) College and Juniata College. McIntyre also served as the offensive coordiantor at Division I-AA St. John’s University before the school eliminated the program. McIntyre played two years of football at Norwich as an offensive lineman, one under former head coach Steve Hackett and one under Mike Yesalonia, before a back injury cut short his playing career. During his senior year, he served as a student assistant coach and as a part-time assistant for one year following graduation. McIntyre was a member of the Norwich Corps of Cadets where he attained the rank of Cadet Lieutenant. He was also a member of the Honor Committee and the Ring Committee. While an offensive lineman at Milford High School, McIntyre captained the team during his senior year and made all-league and All-Central Massachussetts honors. He was also a Milford Daily News All-Star and played in the annual Children’s Hospital game. McIntyre also served as Senior Class President. McIntyre is the son of Jack and Ann McIntyre. He has a brother named Michael. During his free time, he enjoys exercising, skiing, playing golf and spending time with his family. McIntyre is single and resides in Northfield.

NEW FOOTBALL LOCKER ROOM

2010 NORWICH FOOTBALL MEDIA GUIDE

The Norwich University football team was welcomed to campus this August by a brand new locker room facility in Andrews Hall. The Cadets now have a state-of-the-art facility in which to prepare for both games and practices. The room features 126 wooden locker stalls for every member of the Norwich program. A synthetic rubber flooring has replaced the old painted concrete surface. The room is now private, and big enough for coaches to hold meetings in. A divider was installed so that the room can be separated and allow for offensive and defensive meetings to be conducted simultaneously. The room is also equipped with couches and flatscreen televisions for players to relax. It is also much more organized and spacious. NU head coach Shawn McIntyre is extremely pleased with how the room has come together. “The locker room has a very professional feel to it,” says McIntyre. “I think it has created a very positive atmosphere, which promotes a family feel. It is a wide open space, which is very comfortable. You really cannot put a price tag on how important this is for our program. It will certainly be an outstanding recruiting tool moving forward. The team’s Monument has been moved back into place, and the players continue to tap it each time they leave the locker room. The space will be available to the team during the spring season, which is different from past years.

2010 NORWICH FOOTBALL MEDIA GUIDE

STRENGTH & CONDITIONING Norwich Head Strength and Conditioning Coach Jeff Kruger implements and organizes year-round, and sportspecific speed, strength, flexibility, agility and metabolic conditioning programs for each team. During the off-season, summer and pre-season phases, athletes are taken through intensive conditioning sessions in the Plumley Armory weight room. Each athlete has a detailed program in which every set, repetition and rest interval is mapped out. Within the past few years, Norwich athletes have earned All-American honors from the National Strength and Conditioning Association as Jimmy Baker (football) and Allison Flynn (women’s basketball) each earned the award in 2006.

Mission Statement The mission of the Norwich University Strength & Conditioning department is to assist student-athletes in their efforts to improve athletic performance, providing the physical edge necessary to compete and win at the NCAA Division III level. Strength training programs consist predominately of groundbased movements including Olympic, power lifting and proprioceptive lifts to improve sport performance and decrease the incidence of injury. Norwich University’s year-round training programs are designed to improve the speed, power, strength, flexibility, agility and metabolic conditioning of each athlete.
