About N or wic h U niv er sity Nor orwic wich Univ niver ersity Founded in 1819 by Captain Aldridge Partridge, Norwich University is nestled in the Green Mountains in Northfield, Vermont. Norwich is the nation’s oldest private military college. Today Norwich University offers educational opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students. The undergraduate experience offers a choice of being in the Corps of Cadets or as a civilian student. Both lifestyles are integrated within the classroom, athletic teams and student organizations. Norwich’s undergraduate student population of 2200 hail from 40 different states and 20 foreign countries. Eightyone percent of the 157 faculty hold terminal degrees. Norwich boasts a student to faculty ratio of 14:1 and is proud of its long tradition of excellence in teaching and personal attention given to students. Thirty academic programs, including a teacher/education licensure program, and four ROTC programs are offered. Norwich is the birthplace of the ROTC program due to the innovative educational methods of Alden Partridge. As an NCAA Division III school, the University sponsors varsity athletic competition in men’s and women’s ice hockey, football, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s cross country, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s lacrosse, women’s volleyball, wrestling, men’s tennis and men’s and women’s swimming and diving, as well as men’s and women’s rugby. On campus Norwich offers 80 clubs and organizations including academic and professional societies, special interest clubs and a range of religious, military and community service organizations. Under its School of Graduate Studies, Norwich offers 10 online graduate degrees at the Master’s level and one certificate program. Enrollment in the graduate school is 1200 students. Norwich University is located in Northfield, Vt., just 15 miles from Montpelier, the state capital.

“Our sophomore class is extremely talented and we can’t wait to see how much they will have improved this fall.” Senior Mike Lee and sophomores Mike Ravenelle and Garrett Shufelt return and should provide veteran leadership to the midfield, an area of strength for the Cadets this fall. Ravenelle and Shufelt combined to score nine goals in 2009, and both have improved over the summer. Norwich should be strong at forward this fall as well, with junior Ryan Robertson and sophomore Jake Leclaire headlining that unit. Robertson showed flashes of potential last season, including a hat trick and two assists in NU’s 8-0 victory over Green Mountain. Leclaire, meanwhile, scored two goals and dished out a team-best six assists as a freshman. Norwich University Men’s Basketball

The biggest question marks on the roster heading into the fall surround the defense and goalkeeper positions. The Cadets graduated four-year starting defender Chris Rivet this past spring, and they will sorely miss his dependability along the back line. NU will also be without Charles Maxwell, who had served as the team’s starting goalie for the past two seasons. Sophomore Sam Armus, who appeared in four games as a first-year player in 2009, and freshman Alex Toomey are expected to battle it out for the right to replace Maxwell in goal. “This year’s team will have excellent experience and leadership in seniors Roger Motaze and Mike Lee who have started almost every game over their careers,” says Dezotell. “Lee has an uncanny ability to play just about every position on the field, and we will likely use him in many different roles this fall. Motaze will look to round off his excellent four-year career with his best year yet. He is undoubtedly one of the top players in New England when he performs at his peak level and we expect nothing less from him in his final season. “Zach Blodgett is going to set a great example for us this fall as he continues his rehab from a torn ACL during the spring season,” adds Dezotell. “He has an outside shot at being able to play towards the end of the season and he is doing everything possible to make this a reality. His hard work and desire will be a great example for the younger players to draw from.”
The Norwich University men’s soccer team is looking to recapture its championship form after dropping to fourth place in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) last year. The Cadets, who qualified for the ECAC New England Tournament last fall, are hoping to return to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in three seasons. Norwich returns several key players to this year’s squad, led by senior midfielder Roger Motaze. Motaze, who will serve as one of the team’s co-captains this season, scored five goals and added two assists as a junior last year. The former GNAC “Rookie of the Year” figures to provide excellent leadership to a relatively young team that is still developing. Norwich head coach Kyle Dezotell, who has brought tremendous success to the program over his four years at the school, is looking forward to what the upcoming season will bring. “We are very excited about our chances to compete at a high level this fall,” says Dezotell. “We have the nucleus of a very solid, young team, but our success will largely depend on the ability of our freshmen and sophomores to step in and make significant contributions.

Kyle Dezotell enters his fifth season as the head men’s soccer coach at Norwich University in 2010. He has led the Cadets to great success including back-to-back Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Regular Season titles, a GNAC Tournament title and a NCAA Tournament appearance. The 2008 team finished with an 18-3-1 overall record, winning the GNAC Regular Season and Tournament titles before advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Dezotell was named the GNAC “Coach of the Year” two straight seasons, receiving the honor in 2007 and 2008. Previous to coming to Norwich Dezotell served as head men’s soccer coach at Johnson State College in 2004 and 2005. He led the 2005 JSC men’s soccer team to the North Athletic Conference (NAC) Regular Season title and recognition as the 10th “Most Improved Team” in NCAA D-III. Dezotell was tabbed as the NAC “Coach of the Year” for his efforts. Dezotell began his coaching career in 2003 as an assistant coach at St. Michael’s College. Prior to coaching Dezotell played three seasons with the semi-professional Vermont Voltage. The team advanced to the Final Eight of the 2003 Player Development League (PDL) National Championships. Dezotell spent his collegiate career at Middlebury College, where he is the Panthers’ career record holder in goals, assists, and points. His team captured 1999 ECAC New England Championship and won the inaugural New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men’s soccer championship in 2001. Dezotell was named All-NESCAC and All-New England while at Middlebury. Dezotell also competed for three seasons on the D-I Middlebury College nordic ski team. Dezotell received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Middlebury College in 2003. He also holds a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) advanced national diploma. Dezotell serves as a staff coach for the Far Post soccer club, and has coached in the Vermont ODP. In addition to his duties as head men’s soccer coach, Dezotell also serves as the head tennis coach at Norwich University.
Eric Nordenson enters his fifth season as assistant men’s soccer coach at Norwich University in 2010. He has assisted head coach Kyle Dezotell in winning two Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Regular Season titles, a GNAC Tournament title and a first round NCAA Tournament game. Nordenson began his coaching career in 1995 as an assistant coach at Castleton State, where the Spartans compiled a record of 14-3-1 and captured the Mayflower Conference title. In 1996, Nordenson served as an assistant coach at Northeastern University for one of the finest Huskies’ teams in school history. Nordenson then moved back to Vermont, coaching at Montpelier High School and Spaulding High School from 19972003. From 2000-2003, Nordenson was the assistant director at Montpelier based Capital Soccer Club. Nordenson served an assistant coach at Saint Michael’s College in 2004 and 2005 prior to coming to Norwich. Nordenson played college soccer at Castleton State College from 1991-1994 while earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice.
Chris Rivet Assistant Coach 2010 marks Chris Rivet’s first venture into coaching. He will work primarily in an individual setting with the players, helping them develop their skills and awareness of the game. The 2009 Norwich graduate comes off a stellar career for the Cadets in which he anchored the defense for four years while tying the team’s all-time assist record with 29. Rivet earned numerous accolades during his time at NU. He was named to the All-GNAC third team in 2008 before being named to the first team in 2009. Rivet was also named a ECAC New England all-star and invited to participate in the 2009 NEISL senior bowl following his final campaign for the maroon and gold. Rivet earned a degree in Civil Engineering.
