lege. In 1999, the team captured the ECAC New Eng land Championship and won the inaugural NESCAC Men’s Soccer Championship two seasons later. While at Middlebury, Dezotell was named to the AllNESCAC and All-New England teams, while still finding time to compete on the Division-I Nordic Ski Team for three seasons. After college, Dezotell played three seasons with the semi-professional Vermont Voltage. In 2003, his team advanced to the Final Eight of the 2003 PDL National Championships. Dezotell serves as a staff coach for Far Post Soccer Club and has coached previous season for Vermont’s Olympic Development Program.

Head Coach Head Coach Kyle Dezotell embarks on his sixth season at the helm of the Cadets men’s soccer team, compiling an impressive career record of 70-28-7 in his five seasons at Norwich. Dezotell began his coaching career in 2003 as the assistant coach at Saint Michael’s College. The following year in 2004 he was named head coach of the Johnson State College Badgers, a squad he ended up coaching to the NAC Regular Season Championship in 2005 and earned the 10th spot as “Most Improved Team” in NCAA Division III. That year, Dezotell was named NAC’s “Coach of the Year”. In 2006, he found his way to Norwich and became the ninth head coach in the 52-year history of the men's soccer program. In his inaugural season, Dezotell coached the Cadets to a 13-7-1 record and into the ECAC New England Tournament semifinals. The following year, NU finished at 19-3-1 and won the GNAC Regular Season title, setting precedent as the first Norwich University athletic team to ever win an ECAC New England Championship. He earned his first GNAC “Coach of the Year” in 2007 and then repeated in 2008 after guiding the Cadets to their first GNAC Tournament title since 2001. The coach’s soccer resume stands out as early as ninth grade, where at North Country Union High School, Dezotell’s name still stands as the career record holder in goals, assists, and points, in addition to holding the single season and career Vermont Division-I High School goals record. He was a four-time All-Metro Conference athlete and three-time All-State performer. Dezotell also earned Vermont Gatorade “Player of the Year” and NSCAA All-America. In 1998, he led his team to the Vermont State Championship. Dezotell received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Middlebury College in 2003 and also holds an NSCAA Advanced National Diploma. Dezotell played to an impressive level in his four years with the Panthers men’s soccer team and still stands as the career record holder in goals, assists and points at the Col

the Corps,” Dezotell said. “He’s had a great preseason, and now we’ll see if he can balance the demands of being a rook, a student, and an athlete all at the same time.” To add to any already talented defense, NU also has the benefit of returning its standout freshman goaltender from a year ago in Alex Toomey (Anchorage, Alaska). Toomey started 18 of 19 games in net and finished the season with a 10-6-2 record, 1.29 goals against average and a .802 save percentage. He also posted five shutouts. “Having Alex back is great,” Dezotell said. “He had a very good freshman year, and certainly in my mind, is one of the best goalkeepers in our conference. He was a rook as well, so there were some good times and some tough times. But now, being a sophomore, he has taken over a leadership role within in our team, especially guiding the new freshmen corps kids.” Toomey will have four other freshmen pushing him for playing time, including Greg Payne (Budd Lake, Pa.), Christian Hallstrom (Las Vegas, Nev.), Zach Harrington and Zach Scher (Troy, N.Y.) While NU was excellent at stopping goals last season, the Cadets also struggled to score goals for much of the season. Dezotell said that once again he’ll be looking for someone to step up on offense. “Offensively it’s still a little bit of a question mark on who is going to score goals,” he said. “We’ve had some guys look good both on our trip to Spain and now in preseason.” One of the players to catch Dezotell’s eye will be a new face in sophomore transfer Wesley Keslin (Brossard, Que.) “Wesley transferred in last year and had to sit out a year due to NCAA International rules,” Dezotell said. “He is looking like he could score some goals for us. He’s got great speed and a great attitude and works really hard. He’s very athletic so I think he’ll be able to get in behind some teams and score some goals.” Senior captain Ryan Robertson and sophomore Joe Young are both expected to factor heavily into the offense as well. “As long as Ryan stays healthy he has 10-goal potential and can be one of our leading scorers,” Dezotell said. “Joe has also had a pretty good preseason. He played well last season but was unlucky a number

by Derek Dunning, NU Sports Information NORTHFIELD, Vt. – “Defense wins championships” is a commonly used phrase by coaches in a variety of sports. The 2011 Norwich men’s soccer team will attempt to prove the age-old adage true this season as the Cadets have their sights set on winning their first Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) title since 2008. Kyle Dezotell enters his sixth season at the helm of the program with an impressive 70-28-7 record so far. He begins 2011 just 19 wins shy of the school all-time record for coaching wins. NU returns eight starters from last year’s 10-72 squad that fell 4-0 to Albertus Magnus in the conference semifinals. The Cadets will have every member of their defense back that surrendered just 31 goals last season. The group is led by a pair of sophomores in GNAC 1st Team selection Ryan Campbell (Damascus, Md.) and 2nd Team selection Andrew Dustin (Canterbury, N.H.). “Defensively things look good right now,” said NU men’s soccer coach Kyle Dezotell. “Ryan and Andy were our two starting center backs last year as freshmen and gained a ton of experience. They could potentially be a center back pairing for four years which would be a great thing.” Junior Mike Ravenelle (Merrimack, N.H), sophomore Anthony Amell (Northfield, Vt.) and freshman Chris Bristol (Clinton, Conn.) are each expected to compete for time on the backline as well. “Ravenelle has really stepped up into more of a leadership role as a junior,” Dezotell said. “He’s drastically improved his fitness, maybe as much as anybody we’ve ever had while I’ve been here. He’s pretty much solidified himself into a starting defensive role.” “Amell started a lot of games for us last year, and this year I think he’s going to fit into a utility role quite well,” Dezotell said. “He’s versatile and can fill a number of roles and can be the cover for a lot of positions.” “Chris Bristol is one of our freshman rooks in 6

2011 Season Preview of times and for some reason just couldn’t find the back of the net.” With seven field players on the roster 6-foot or taller, Dezotell hopes that the team can convert scoring chances off of set pieces. “The big thing for us will be scoring on set pieces,” he said. “We have some size for the first time in a couple years, so we’re going to try and generate some offense through our corner kicks and set pieces.” At midfield, NU will have a mix of veterans and newcomers battling for playing time led by junior GNAC 2nd team selection Garrett Shufelt (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and classmate Colin Pope (Tunbridge, Vt.), as well as sophomores Eric Weir (Ipswich, Mass.) and Billy Flanagan (Oxford, N.Y.). “Eric had a great year for us last year playing both midfield and forward,” Dezotell said. “He’s always incredibly fit and plays both sides of the ball well. Garrett is a good wide player and is always dangerous when he’s on the field. We’re working on a couple things with him right now but he’ll definitely score some goals for us and get some assists.” Coming into preseason, Dezotell didn’t expect to have Flanagan ready for game action after the sophomore suffered a season ending lacrosse injury last spring. “We’ve had a bit of a surprise having Billy back and training already,” Dezotell said. “To have him back and able to play after just five months is pretty amazing considering what he’s gone through.” “Colin Pope is another guy, that if he can stay healthy, he’ll have a great year for us,” Dezotell said. “He’s been battling through injuries his whole career, but when he’s healthy he certainly will factor in.” Pedro Rodriguez (Bolivar City, Venezuela) and Derek Morin (South Paris, Maine) are two freshmen that Dezotell expects to be in the mix competing with the four veterans. “Pedro is a very smooth player,” Dezotell said. “He passes the ball and maintains possession really well. I think it may take a bit of an adjustment for him to fit into the strong, fast and physical American college game, but he’s a very good player. Derek is another freshman that will be battling for playing time and has looked good in preseason so far. He’s naturally a defender but he can run for days so we like seeing what he can do out wide now.”

Dezotell said the biggest thing that Norwich will need to improve on is focus and playing a full 90 minutes. He feels that the temporary lapses from last year however can somewhat be contributed to inexperience with having seven freshmen at times in the starting lineup. “I think our focus for 90 minutes has to be better this year,” Dezotell said. “We lost in the conference semifinals last year after giving up three headers in the first half.” “We’re still young, but I don’t think we’re too young,” he said. “Last year, I think we were too young, with at times having as many as seven freshmen starting, and I think that was a bit too much to ask. This year I feel like we’re significantly older than we were last year and it will most likely be more like one or two freshmen and then the rest being mostly sophomores and juniors.” “The start of our season is going to be extremely difficult, it’s probably as tough of a start as anyone in New England,” Dezotell said. “In some ways that can be good, though, because when you’re on the road your focus needs to be especially good. But, as much as we’re at a disadvantage at the start of the year, we’ll be playing a lot of home games at the end of the year when kids start to wear down a bit more.” Although the first month of the schedule will be taxing, Dezotell said it will help prepare the team in the long run when the GNAC conference schedule starts up. “The most important thing we’ll be looking at through the first part of the season is the progress the team makes,” he said. “The win/loss record isn’t as crucial since at-large bids typically don’t come out of our conference. It’s all about being ready for GNAC games and putting ourselves in the best position to win the conference tournament and make the NCAAs.” Norwich opens the 2011 campaign on Thursday, Sept. 1 at Johnson State at 3 p.m.
