Director of Athletics

Associate Director of Athletics Senior Women’s Administrator

Well into his fourth decade of service to Norwich University, Tony Mariano continues to provide leadership to a Norwich athletics program that has attained unprecedented levels of success. The 2003-04 season was arguably the finest in school history as all 16 varsity sports teams competed in postseason action, highlighted by the football team's first bowl game appearance in 20 years, and the men's ice hockey team competing in its sixth Division III "Frozen Four." Additionally, the Norwich men's rugby team qualified for the 16-team USA Rugby Collegiate Championship for the first time in program history. Mariano is in his 18th year as the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics, after spending his first 16 seasons in Northfield as a coach. He was head men's soccer coach from 1978-84, before being named head men's ice hockey coach in 1982. Under Mariano's guidance, the Norwich men's ice hockey team made its first postseason appearance in 1984, and went on to appear in seven ECAC tournaments and earn two NCAA Championship berths. Mariano stepped down as head coach in 1992 when he assumed his current duties as athletic director. Mariano is a 1974 graduate of St. Lawrence University with a degree in physical education. He received his master's degree from Norwich in 1975. Tony and his wife Gail reside in Northfield. Their son, Tom, is an assistant hockey coach at Hobart.

2011 Season Preview The Norwich softball team will open the 2011 season with a lot of new faces on a young squad that features 12 new players, including nine freshmen.

“Both young women boast an exciting balance of speed, strength and athleticism." McGrath said. "Look for Belcher to start as the Cadets' shortstop for several years to come. Defensively we're looking pretty solid. The pitching staff of three will have to work hard, and our offense, which has great potential, will have to outpace GNAC competitors."

Greg McGrath returns for his second season at the helm of the program looking to build off of last year's strong finish to the season where they went 12-7 over the final 19 games.

Sophomore utility players Erin Vien (Plymouth, N.H), Joanie Emerson (Tyngsboro, Mass.), and Noel Byers (Iron Mountain, Mich.) all embark on their first season with the Cadets and have the ability to play multiple positions in the field.

The Cadets finished with an overall record of 13-24 and a 9-15 mark in Great Northeast Athletic Conference play in 2010. NU qualified as the No. 8 seed in the GNAC Tournament and upset fifth-seeded Lasell in the first round before bowing out of the double-elimination tournament with losses to Simmons and St. Joseph's (Maine).

Freshmen Jennette Chartrand (Averill Park, N.Y.) and Pam Dubey (Campton, N.H.) will both compete for time in the outfield, while Erin Clark (Bradford, Vt.) and Maggie Walsh (North Planfield, N.J.) will lock down the first and third base corner-infield positions. Rebecca Weaver (Newport, R.I.) will also provide depth at the corner-infield positions as well.

The off-season proved devastating to the program though as Norwich lost rising senior Mackenzie Pratt to cancer. Mackenzie was a standout player and star pitcher for the Cadets. Moving forward from the loss of Mackenzie, the young Cadets have come together, boasting great potential and exceptional team chemistry.

McGrath said the team goals for the 2011 season include beginning the season with the energy and focus seen toward the end of the 2010 season, finishing with a conference record above .500, and earning a chance to return to the GNAC Tournament.

Norwich returns three players from last year's squad, including an all-conference selection in senior catcher Marley Balasco.

"Our team captains [Balasco and Buker] are working with me to prepare the young team for success in GNAC play," McGrath said. "Marley is the returning team MVP and has lofty individual goals of earning weekly and yearly GNAC accolades again this year. Kelsey will lead the team as a captain and as the ace in the circle for the Cadets this year."

Balasco (Barrington, R.I.) earned second-team honors after hitting .424 with a team-best 37 runs scored. She also added 12 doubles, two triples, one home run, and drove in 26 runs while posting a slugging percentage of .585 and leading the team with 18 walks. Seana Ellsworth (Everett, Mass.) and Kelsey Buker (Morrisville, Vt.) are the only other returners for the Maroon and Gold.

Freshmen Kaylie Miller (Long Lake, N.Y.) and Briana Day (Yelm, Wash.) will fill out the Cadets' pitching staff along with Buker.

McGrath said that the large group of newcomers will be vital to the team's success this season and two freshmen that should help make an immediate impact for the Cadets this season are Abby Belcher (Winthrop, Mass.) at shortstop and Kim Comtois (Northwood, N.H.) in the outfield.

The Cadets open their 2011 campaign with a spring break trip to Fort Myers, Fla. and the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic. NU will play eight games in five days while in Florida, starting with SUNY Brockport on March 14th and then Worcester State (Mass.) immediately following. Norwich will finish the trip up with 6

2011 Season Preview games against North Park (Ill.), Stevens Institute (N.J.), Salem State (Mass.), St. Joseph's (Brooklyn), Heidelberg (Ohio), as well as wrapping up with Franklin & Marshall (Pa.). Norwich kicks off its conference schedule on March 26 and 27 when the Cadets travel to Johnson & Wales and Lasell for a pair of doubleheaders. The Cadets follow up with trips to Pine Manor, Albertus Magnus, and Rivier the following Friday to Sunday. The Cadets will make their home debut in 2011 on Friday, April 8 when they host Emerson and then St. Joseph's (Conn.) the following day. After a road trip to Suffolk on Sunday April 10, Norwich closes out the regular season with five-straight home doubleheaders against Lyndon, Simmons, Emmanuel, Mt. Ida, and St. Joseph's (Maine.) will be senior day on April 23. If Norwich finishes in the top-eight of the league standings, the Cadets will qualify for the GNAC Tournament to be held April 26-May 1 at the highest seed.
