2011 Season Preview A strong foundation will be important to the 2011 Norwich volleyball squad. Head coach Amanda Cuiffo looks to build off a successful 2010 slate where the Cadets finished 20-11 overall and 7-5 in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference. She has a strong returning group in place to do so. The returnees consist of senior middle hitters Ivana Batur (Zadar, Croatia) and April Byllaardt (Stormville, N.Y.), senior outside hitter Brittany Palmer (York, Pa.), junior right side hitter MaryRose Meany (Goshen, N.Y.), sophomore defensive specialist Jennette Chartrand (Poestenkill, N.Y.) and classmate outside hitter Quinn Duffy (Colchester, Conn.). Batur, Byllardt and Palmer were three of the Cadets’ top five in kills last fall, while Byllardt and Palmer were the top two in service aces.

strong around the floor with a team-best 80 blocks (32 of which were stuffs) to go with 222 digs, 42 service aces and 196 kills. She was also first in attack percentage (.263). Byllaardt was above .200 in attack percentage (.249 – 233 kills) and accumulated 65 blocks and a team-high 58 service aces. Meany contributed 73 kills and 39 blocks, while Palmer, playing on the outside, had 105 kills to go along with 49 service aces and 220 digs. “Ivana had a strong junior season, and I look forward to having her lead the offense this year,” Cuiffo said. Getting the ball to the attackers will be the job of a newcomer. With standout setter Molly Rice gone due to graduation, the Cadets may turn to several new faces. Junior Gabrielle Miller (Grove City, Ohio) and freshmen Corinnne Baita (Rochester, N.H.), Kassandra Jermyn (Auburn, Mass.) and Audra Bianco (Lehigh Acres, Fla.) are among those possibilities. “I like this freshman class,” Cuiffo said. “The four setters, plus Alex Palmer (South Windsor, Ct.) and Kelsey Mancini (Lynnfield, Mass.), could provide us with some strong numbers.”

April Byllaardt provides a strong presence at the net for Norwich.

Batur and Palmer were among the top five in digs and Batur, Byllardt and Meany made up the top three in blocks. Duffy gained court experi-ence appearing in 20 matches during her freshman campaign, while Chartrand produced 56 digs in 25 matches. Adding to the depth of the front line is junior Haley Vermes who is joining the team for the first time this fall. “Those six give us key ingredients of leadership and experience,” Cuiffo said. “(The two areas) are important with
