2011 Season Outlook The Norwich University women’s lacrosse team finished strong in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference with a 7-1 record and found themselves in a three-way tie for the top seed. Although a coin toss did not fall in Norwich’s favor, they went on to win the GNAC championship game and advanced to the first round of the NCAA tournament, where they eventually fell to SUNY Cortland. This year, head coach Beth Van

Kacey Abbriano ’12

Parys returns for her second year at the helm of the Cadets squad and will be joined by Julia Steese as the new assistant women’s lacrosse coach. Having both worked together through a successful women’s soccer season earlier this fall, fans can expect to see this coaching staff making positive changes for an even more successful spring season. With 11 student-athletes returning to the field, the 10 new members in maroon and gold this season will have a chance to learn a lot through the hard work and experience of their upperclassmen. Van Parys’s top-three statistical leaders all will be returning to the line-up, including sophomore midfielder Kacey Abbriano, who led with a commanding 58 points. Abbriano scored 51 goals and added seven assists, and will be one of the Cadets’ greatest offensive threats. Junior midfielder Mollie Fitzpatrick earned 34 points, starting all 14

games she played. She led the team in assists with 10 and scored 24 goals, while collecting 50 ground balls and 20 draw controls. Senior attacker Chelsea Martin will be returning for her final season in the maroon and gold. Last year, she accumulated 31 points, having scored 26 goals and five assists. Martin’s veteran experience will help lead the Cadets offense against the strong defensive holds of their GNAC opponents. The Cadets return four additional attackers to join Martin on the front lines, representing a solid junior class with Jillian Balasco, Danielle Del Dotto, Lindsey Mathias, and Suzanne Whitaker. These four players round out the top half of the statistics charts for NU, as they combined for 62 points and 66 ground balls last season. Holding Norwich’s defensive line strong are sophomore Maggy Ackerman and junior Lori Baldassara, who started all but one game last season and collected 32 ground balls and 10 draw controls. Kellie Pickel, the Cadets senior goalkeeper, will be returning to the net after a 6-6-0 season in 2010. Pickel saw nearly 700 minutes of action last year, and made 127 saves in 13 games. She will be valuable to the last line of defense as the Cadets look to capture the conference title this season. Junior Meghan Kennedy will also be returning to goal, as she made 34 saves last year to go 3-1 in her four starts. Norwich’s 2011 women’s lacrosse squad will be captained by Abbriano, Baldassara and Pickel. The 10 new student-athletes will be in good hands with these three veteran, standout athletes. The Cadets have added seven new defenders and three attackers to their roster for the year. The incoming defenders range in age and experience from seniors Amber Heckmann, Nicki Hunsicker, and Brittney Schlauch to junior Whitney Brown and newcomers Miranda Otto, Amanda Quil-

liam, and Caitlyn Trepess. On the attacking side, freshmen Meghan Grenier and Courtney Saheim will look to put numbers on the board, while freshman Grace Fitzpatrick will join the Cadets’ midfielders. The only Great Northeast Athletic Conference loss the women’s lacrosse team faced last year was against the Saint Joseph’s (Me.) Monks, but the Cadets didn’t back down in the 13-12 defeat, taking the Monks into four overtimes before submitting to the loss. These two teams have a healthy competitive edge against one another, and fans can expect to see a great rematch in 2011 here in Northfield, Vt. on April 23. The Cadets will open their 2011 schedule on the road at Westfield State on March 22 at 4 p.m. The team will remain on the road for their first four games, hosting their home opener at Howard Field at 4 p.m. on April 6 against conference-rival Emmanuel College.
