2010-11 Season Outlook The Norwich men’s basketball team wrapped up their 2009-10 season with a .500 record of 13-13, having gone 8-10 in conference play. They controlled the game on their home court in Andrews Hall, winning 8 of 12 contests played at Norwich.

Head coach Paul Booth enters his 18th season at the helm of the Cadets’ 2010-11 program and has a promising, experienced squad taking the court. Having graduated only two seniors, Booth returns his top four statistical leaders. Josh Cabrera will captain the Cadets this season. According to Booth, Cabrera is high-achieving, both academically and athletically and “embodies everything a captain should be” by setting a high standard for his teammates and making decisions based on the wellness of the team, not just the individual. One of the focuses for the Cadets’ 2010-11 campaign is consistency. “Last year we proved we can play with anyone in the league on any given night,” says Booth. “We want to

become more consistent throughout the season, raise the bar to the level of play regardless of the opponent.” As can be expected, the goal is to challenge for the GNAC Championship and win a berth to the NCAA Tournament. “Given our talent and experience I expect we will be in the mix” Booth stated, “however in all our years in this league this may be the best year in terms of parity. We are going to have to play well every night to achieve our goal.” This season will be the first time a core group of guys have been able to play together in maroon and gold for two or three consecutive seasons. “We had a young group last season, young in a lot of ways,” says Booth. “From the experience factor, we hope to mature to play consistently on the road as well as at home.” Booth is excited about many of his returning athletes, including Cori Boston, who transferred to the team last season. “We’re excited about having Cori for a full year,” says Booth. “We have a full preseason with him and to get him in game shape.” Booth expects Jaren Jeffcoat to be a leader on and off the court. Jeffcoat played over 600 minutes last season, averaging 13.3 points a game. He earned a .695 free-throw percentage and average 5.6 rebounds per contest. Jaren stepped up in a lot of tight games last season. For us to get to the post season we will need him to have a good senior year.” Two other upper classmen that will impact the season are junior Antonio Davis and Ryan Williams. Davis, 6-6 post player, led the team with 7.9 reb per game(which was good for 5th in the GNAC and was

5

the third leading scorer at 11.8 per game. “Antonio has really evolved as person and as a player. He epitomizes what Norwich Basketball is about.” Williams, a 6-2 guard from Texas had a tremendous first year in Northfield. He was 9th in the conference in 3point shooting percentage at just under 40% and was fourth on the team in scoring at 11.5ppg. “Ryan has NBA 3 point range and really stretches the defense. He allows other to be better players because defenses must pay a great deal of attention to his perimeter shooting” And then there is the captain, who is returning from a red-shirted sophomore season. “Cabrera is a cerebral type of player,” says Booth. He’s not a guy who is going to be getting 25 points a game, but we will win because of him. He’s a jack of all trades. He doesn’t necessarily excel in any particular category, but he is very good in a lot of them. His injury really impacted our team-I am very glad to see him back in uniform.” The Norwich Cadets will officially begin their 2010-11 campaign on the road at Southern Vermont College, tipping off at 7 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 15.

Norwich Coaching Staff Paul Booth

Jon Rock

Head Coach

Assistant Coach

Paul Booth is embarking upon his 17th season at the helm of the Norwich University men's basketball program. Booth is NU's all-time leader in career wins (195). He passed the legendary Ed Hockenbury on the all-time wins list during the 2007-08 campaign. Hockenbury previously held the record with 182 career victories. Booth came to Norwich in 1993 and took over a team that had posted a 1-23 record the previous season. He made an immediate impact on the program as he led the Cadets to a very respectable 12-13 mark during his first year on the sidelines. The dramatic improvement resulted in the team being recognized as the "Most Improved Team" in New England as voted on by the New England Basketball Coaches' Association. Booth then led NU to back-to-back 14-12 records in 1996 and 1997, marking the first consecutive winning seasons at the school in nine years. From 2002-2007, Booth guided Norwich to a schoolrecord five consecutive winning seasons. The Cadets just missed extending that streak to six straight years, compiling a 12-13 mark last season. Booth is a 1983 graduate of St. Joseph's College (Vt.). He began his coaching career that same year at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, N.Y. The Vikings won 20 games that season and went to the Region III Playoffs, eventually losing to Champlain College. Booth later spent three years at Springfield College, serving as assistant varsity coach and junior varsity head coach. While at Springfield, he completed his master's degree in 1988. Later that year, Booth moved on to Thomas College in Waterville, Maine. In the 1991-92 season, he led the Terriers to a 15-11 record and the NAIA District V Playoffs. Thomas earned a nomination as one of the most improved teams in New England following that season. Booth directed the Terriers for five seasons before coming to Norwich. In 1997, Booth was selected to be the program coordinator for the first Adidas ABCD Basketball Camp that was held in Tel Aviv, Israel. Among the many coaches and players there, he worked with NBA Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Booth also runs a two-week basketball camp at Norwich every August.

Jon Rock returns to Northfield for his third season as an assistant coach on the Norwich staff. Rock, who played at NU from 19972001, returned to the program last season after coaching at the high school level for a number of years. Rock assists Coach Booth in all facets in daily practice instruction, individual player development and recruiting. Rock earned GNAC all-league honors as a senior at Norwich, after leading the team in assists and points per game. Most recently, Rock served as an assistant coach for Rice Memorial High School in South Burlington, Vt. He helped lead the team to the 2006 Vermont D-I championship.

Daniel Gauthier Volunteer Assistant Coach Daniel Gauthier returns to the men's basketball program for his seventh year under head coach Paul Booth. Gauthier started out as the student manager for the team during his freshman year at Norwich and began to work his way up the coaching ranks, being promoted to Student Assistant Coach after his sophomore year. During his sophomore and junior years the Cadets were back-to-back GNAC Champions and participated in the NCAA Tournament twice, hosting the a first round game in 2006. His responsibilities include scouting opponents, on-floor coaching, player relations, and academic monitoring. Gauthier will look to take on an increased role in recruiting quality student-athletes this year. He also founded the Cadets' Classic 3-on-3 Tournament which has been a very successful fund raiser for the program for four years now. A 2008 graduate of Norwich University, Gauthier was a member of the Corps of Cadets and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Engineering. He is currently employed at Total Temperature Instrumentation, Inc. as an Assistant Webmaster.
