Norwich University
Few American institutions of higher learning are as old as Norwich University and fewer still closely adhere to the principles of their founder. For over two centuries the educational philosophy of Alden Partridge has been Norwich’s touchstone for the mental, moral and physical development of future leaders of our nation and the world. This year we welcome Dr. Mark C. Anarumo, Colonel, USAF (Ret), as Norwich University’s 24th president. He assumed the presidency on June 1, 2020 amid a global pandemic and significant civil unrest. His top three priorities for his first year are to lead the Norwich community through the necessary changes inherent with the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure the health and safety of the campus community; to address academic, operational and financial priorities of Norwich in its third century of service to the nation and the world; and to learn the Norwich culture to preserve the 200-year-old tradition of educating citizen-soldiers to build and defend the republic. Founded in 1819, Norwich University celebrated its bicentennial in 2019. In September 2020 at Homecoming, Norwich launched its latest fundraising initiative, called “Shoulder-to-Shoulder,” a three-year, $28 million effort. About the initiative, President Anarumo said: “In order to navigate this uncharted course and push Norwich to greater heights, we must continue to stand Shoulder-to-Shoulder. That is why we have identified five priorities that are essential to our success: The Norwich Fund, Scholarships, Technology, Academic Enhancement and Planned Giving. Through May, 2023, we have set our sights on raising $28 million for these priorities.”

2020 TOP NEWS HIGHLIGHTS Norwich University welcomed Colonel Mark Anarumo, Ph.D., USAF, (Ret.) as 24th president of the nation’s oldest private military college. Dr. Mark Anarumo assumed the presidency on June 1, 2020 amid a global pandemic and significant civil unrest. His top three priorities for his first year are to lead the Norwich community through the necessary changes inherent with the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure the health and safety of the campus community; to address academic, operational and financial priorities of Norwich in its third century of service to the nation and the world; and to learn the Norwich culture to preserve the 200-year-old tradition of educating citizensoldiers to build and defend the republic. President Anarumo comes to Norwich most recently as the Director and Permanent Professor for the Center for Character and Leadership Development, U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado. Norwich University officials launched the “Shoulder-to-Shoulder” initiative, a three-year, $28 million fundraising effort during virtual 2020 Homecoming. The initiative is focused on raising funds for five strategic priorities: The Norwich Fund, scholarships, technology endowment, academic enhancement and planned giving. Norwich University’s Design+Build Collaborative earned a design excellence Merit Award from the American Institute of Architects, New England chapter for a project to design and build NEST, an outdoor classroom/playhouse as part of playground renovations at Montpelier’s Union Elementary School. Their entry was one of 163 from across the region. Norwich University Architecture Professor Tolya Stonorov and her students partnered with the school and the community on the project which serves over 475 students in the state’s capital city. Norwich University has been awarded two Cybersecurity grants through the National Security Agency (NSA) Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education (CAE_CDE) program in partnership with Department of Defense Chief Information Officer (DOD CIO) and CYBERCOMMAND. The grants are in support of the Norwich Academic Strategic Plan and advance both capacity on campus and national stature of its programs. The two grants, $21M over two years support the creation of a Senior Military College Department of Defense Cyber Institute program authorized in the 2019 National Defense Authorization Act and build an experiential construct to evidence competency for CAE schools nationally. Norwich is the lead institution for both efforts and working in partnership with the other 5 Senior Military Colleges and more than 60 schools nationally to develop and implement an evidencing competency framework. Norwich will execute more than $5M on campus in support of its Cybersecurity and Justice Studies programs to advance these goals. Norwich University’s College of Graduate and Continuing Studies (CGCS) announced the grand opening of its second office, in downtown Denver in early 2020, which will continue to offer student support services for its online bachelor’s degree completion and master’s degree programs, and Norwich Pro’s continuing and professional education courses and certificates for students in areas of the West Coast.
