2022 Residency Conference: Monday, June 20 to Friday, June 24, 2022 All Norwich master’s degree programs culminate in a required, weeklong capstone residency conference on campus. During this transformative week, students present final projects or papers, participate in case studies and hands-on exercises, and solidify friendships and professional connections with classmates and professors. Commencement ceremonies conclude the week.

In October 2020, Norwich launched its latest fundraising initiative, called “Shoulder-to-Shoulder,” a three-year, $28 million effort. Shoulder-to-Shoulder aims to enhance affordability and keep Norwich on the cutting-edge of academic and experiential learning opportunities. It addresses five priorities: the Norwich Fund, Scholarships, Technology Endowment, Academic Enhancement and Planned Giving. Among these priorities, the focus is on the Norwich Fund, which provides flexible resources to address the university’s most urgent needs.

TOP NEWS HIGHLIGHTS Norwich University officials announced a new Bachelor of Science in Design Arts major beginning Fall 2020. The degree program falls within the School of Architecture + Art in the College of Professional Schools, which houses the Design+Build Collaborative. Norwich University has received a 2020 Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) Educational Fundraising Award for the five-year, $100 million bicentennial campaign “Forging the Future.” President Mark Anarumo’s move into Wilson Hall, a Corps of Cadets barracks, during January 2021’s modified in-room COVID-19 quarantine drew media coverage from The New York Times; Anderson Cooper “Full Circle;” the “EdSurge Podcast;” the business magazine Fast Company; New England Cable News; The Associated Press; Seven Days; WVNY-TV/WFFF-TV; Channel 22/44; WPTZ-TV, Channel 5; NBC Nightly News with Kate Snow; Inside HigherEd; and Comcast Newsmakers. Norwich University hosted the seventh International Symposium of Military Academies (ISOMA), Oct. 4 through Oct. 8, 2021, on its Northfield campus. This is the first time this biannual conference was held in the United States. ISOMA works within the framework of the International Association of Military Academies (IAMA), which promotes knowledge and competency sharing among member military academies. Norwich University officials launched the “Shoulder-to-Shoulder” initiative, a three-year, $28 million fundraising effort. The initiative is focused on raising funds for five strategic priorities: The Norwich Fund, scholarships, technology endowment, academic enhancement and planned giving. Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Mark Milley delivered Norwich University’s 2021 Commencement address. As the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Milley is the senior-most ranking member of the military and serves as principal advisor to the President, Secretary of Defense, and National Security Council. Norwich University named Dr. Julia Bernard as its first-ever vice president of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, effective July 1. Bernard will develop, implement and monitor programs that promote diversity in compliance with university policies and federal and state regulations, including but not limited to Titles VI and VII of the Civil Rights Act; Title IX; the Americans with Disabilities Act as Amended (ADAA); the Rehabilitation Act; the Clery Act; the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA); the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA); and other state and federal civil rights regulations and guidelines. She will also serve as the university’s Title II/Section 504 Coordinator. Norwich University hosted the Presidential Inauguration for its 24th president, Dr. Mark Anarumo, on Sept. 22, with a formal ceremony. Norwich University was awarded a two-year $18.5 million grant from the National Security Agency as the lead institution to continue to develop the Department of Defense (DoD) Cyber Institutes at the six Senior Military Colleges (SMCs). This grant builds upon the grant awarded in September 2020, designating Norwich University as the lead in establishing the DOD Cyber Institutes to create a pipeline of qualified cyber professionals in current and projected critical work roles. In Fall 2020, the six DoD Cyber Institutes were established at Norwich University, The Citadel, University of North Georgia, Virginia Tech, Texas A&M and Virginia Military Institute. Norwich University welcomed U.S. Army Gen. Paul E. Funk II on Oct. 19, when he presented Norwich University Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) Pioneer Battalion with the Department of Defense ROTC and Educational Institution Partnership Excellence Award for “exceptional performance” in the academic year 2019-20, making it best in nation.


ATHLETIC HIGHLIGHTS

Football had a record 13 student-athletes named to the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) All-Academic team. Manni Romero was the first player in program history to be named a d3football.com Preseason All-American. Men’s Soccer head coach Adam Pfeifer recorded his 50th career coaching victory with two victories in the spring season. Pfeifer has compiled a 50-15-14 record (.722 winning percentage) in his five seasons at the helm of the program. He also moved into sole possession of third place on the all-time Norwich men’s soccer coaching win list. The Volleyball sister trio of Kathryn ’21, Sarah ’23 and Laura Farnum ’24, became the first trio of sisters to compete on a Norwich University women’s athletic team all at the same time in school history. Men’s Hockey extended their NCAA-all levels consecutive minute shutout streak to 730:26, before it was finally snapped late in the third game of the season vs. Castleton. Head coach Cam Ellsworth recorded his 50th career coaching victory. He is 54-8-5 in his career at Norwich for a .843 winning percentage. Felix Brassard was named the Coach Mariano Most Outstanding Male Senior Athlete, while Gabriel Chicoine won the Male Scholar Athlete of the Year. Chicoine was named a CoSIDA Academic All-American for the second year in a row and became the 20th overall honoree in school history. Michael Korol was named the Charles F. Crosby Courage Award winner. Women’s Hockey finished with a 7-1 record, winning seven straight games to close the season. Senior Samantha Benoit became the 12th player in program history to reach the 100-career-point milestone and just the second defenseman. Benoit finished her career with the third-most assists in program history with 84 assists. She also added 16 goals and was named the Coach Mariano Most Outstanding Female Senior Athlete. Wrestling junior Dan Curran and senior Ben Forsman were each named National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Scholar All-Americans. This marked the third straight year Curran achieved the honor. Women’s Swimming & Diving sophomore Nikky Ansley broke the 50-yard breast stroke record, with a 25.76, nearly a full second faster than the previous school record that was held for 32 years by Lynn Kucera. Baseball won six straight games for the first time since 1989. The Cadets finished the season with a 6-3 record, falling 5-2 to Albertus Magnus in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament First Round. Men’s Lacrosse fell in a rematch of the 2019 GNAC Championship game to Lasell University in its bid for back-to-back GNAC titles. The Lasers were a thorn in Norwich’s side all year, handing the Cadets three of their four losses on the year. Norwich finished with a 9-4 record in 2021. Payden Masaracchia was named the GNAC Player of the Week twice, while Nick Kandra earned GNAC Goalie of the Week honors twice. Masaracchia scored 41 goals, which tied for the sixth-most goals in a single season in program history.
