A Norwich Graduate A university’s legacy can be measured by the impact of its graduates. Norwich University graduates helped to build our nation. From the chief engineer of the first US transcontinental railroad, to leaders in decisive battles, to the individuals who developed the nation’s banking system, the legacy of Norwich reaches back to the most formative decades of our nation’s History. More recent graduates have included a president of NBC and the Chief of Staff of the Army. Innumerable alumni have made a deep and lasting impact on the world as nurses, engineers, soldiers, police officers, and business executives. These are individuals who have prepared themselves to act as well as to think – to execute as well as to conceive, and to be moral, patriotic, efficient, and useful citizens.
Military College of Vermont (MCV) Diploma Norwich students who are members of the Corps of Cadets in good disciplinary standing qualify for the Military College of Vermont annotation on their diploma by meeting the physical fitness standards, completing cadet training requirements, and participating in at least six semesters of ROTC.
In coming to Norwich, today’s graduates encountered great challenges. By overcoming them, they confirmed in themselves the confidence to persevere in the face of adversity. While studying in a rigorous and disciplined academic environment, they acquired invaluable time management skills as well as practical knowledge and expertise in their chosen fields. They have been encouraged to think deeply about what makes a good leader, to reach their own conclusions based on close observation, and to seize opportunities to practice their own skills. Norwich graduates are men and women of distinction. Today, the legacy of Norwich University passes into the hands of those whose names are listed in this program. We have every faith that they will do great things!
Commissioning Ceremony Each year, the day after Norwich’s Commencement, the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) program commissions officers into the United States Armed Forces. During the Commissioning ceremony, cadets are administered the oath of office and are thus commissioned as Second Lieutenants or Ensigns in the Armed Forces. Our cadets can enter into one of sixteen branches in combat arms, combat support, or combat service support. Following the oath, the new Second Lieutenant or Ensign receives their first salute from a NonCommissioned Officer and an exchange of a silver dollar is made from the Officer to the Non-Commissioned to signify the occasion. This event marks the important transition from cadet to officer. Norwich has had a long history of providing leaders to our nation’s Armed Services.
Air Force Distinguished Graduate Det 867 distinguished students are those graduating Norwich cadets who have demonstrated exceptional achievement as developing Airmen throughout their four years in the AFROTC program, as evidenced by their cumulative academic grade point average, physical fitness tests, and leadership in the Cadet Wing and Norwich Corps of Cadets. Additionally, these distinguished students will compete nationally for the AFROTC Distinguished Graduate award.

Richard W. Schneider, PhD 23rd President of Norwich University and Commencement Speaker One of the longest seated college presidents in the country, Dr. Richard W. Schneider proudly carried on the tradition Norwich University Founder Captain Alden Partridge began 200 years ago of developing “citizen soldiers.” Through his extensive military experience serving in the U.S. Coast Guard and the Coast Guard Reserve, and in academia, Dr. Schneider epitomizes Norwich’s unique position in American higher education. A native of Queens, New York, Dr. Schneider is a 1968 graduate of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. He was commissioned as an ensign in the Coast Guard and served eight years of active duty, including a tour of Vietnam. Dr. Schneider retired from the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve as a Rear Admiral and Senior Reservist in July 1998. In July 1992, Dr. Schneider became the 23rd President of Norwich University, where he championed Norwich’s charge to distinguish the University by educating and preparing students to be global leaders in the private sector, government, and military. Together with the Board of Trustees, Dr. Schneider worked to create a series of comprehensive strategic plans for the University during his tenure. NU2019 articulated the course Norwich is taking in its quest for excellence in academics, student life, improved national brand, and improved financial security. Norwich University After Next, released in 2018, prepares the University to navigate in a methodical and increasingly bold manner the challenges of Norwich’s third century of service to its students and the nation through 2035. During Dr. Schneider’s tenure, Norwich University saw major improvements on multiple fronts, including an increase in total undergraduate enrollment by over 25% and in enrollment in the Corps of Cadets by 50%; increased undergraduate student selectivity; the establishment of the College of Graduate and Continuing Studies; the establishment of Norwich University Applied Research Institute (NUARI), the undergraduate Honors Program and a thriving undergraduate research program; the founding of Norwich’s three Research Centers under the Office of Academic Research; the Center for Civic Engagement and the International Center; the Norwich Military Writers’ Symposium and the William E. Colby Award; as well as substantial additions to the physical plant. These additions included Kreitzberg Library, Bartoletto Hall, Wise Campus Center, Sullivan Museum and History Center, Kreitzberg Arena, Shaw Outdoor Center and Doyle Hall, a biomass plant, Dalrymple and South Halls, Mack Hall, and the CoLaboratory as well as renovations to the Haynes Family Stadium at Sabine Field and several other academic buildings. At the conclusion of the 2019 Forging the Future five-year bicentennial campaign, $121 million was raised on a goal of $100 million, and 96% of all academic space at Norwich University had been renovated or was brand new. Further, under Dr. Schneider’s watch, the University has consistently produced positive financial results and Norwich’s endowment has grown from $40 million to over $217 million. In recognition of and with grateful appreciation for his truly outstanding service, commitment, and unparalleled leadership over the past 28 years, Norwich University bestows upon Richard W. Schneider the honorary degree of Doctor of Higher Education Administration with all the rights and privileges appertaining thereto.

The History of Norwich University Following its bicentennial celebration in 2019, Norwich University now marks its third century of educating and preparing students to be global leaders in business, government and the military. Few schools in America have a legacy as long or as influential as Norwich University’s, whose graduates have forged and shaped our nation through service in many fields. Not all have served in uniform, but all possess the moral foundation upon which they innovate, persevere, succeed, and lead a life of purpose, rising to the immense challenges of our nation as American and global citizens. Founded in 1819, Norwich University is the nation’s first private military college, and it remains one of the foremost institutions for leadership training in the United States. Recognized by the Department of Defense as the birthplace of the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC), the University has earned a much-deserved place in the annals of American history. Captain Alden Partridge, a former superintendent of West Point, founded the institution as the “American Literary, Scientific and Military Academy” in Norwich, Vermont. In 1834, the academy was transformed into “Norwich University” when it received a charter from the State of Vermont. After a disastrous fire in 1866, the University moved to its present location in Northfield. Norwich University has a long-standing commitment to innovation in teaching and learning. Norwich was the first educational institution in the country to teach civil engineering; to organize a regimental band; one of the first U.S. institutions to incorporate physical education into the curriculum; to accept international students; to teach agriculture; to admit African-Americans as military cadets; and to integrate women into a Corps of Cadets. Norwich also was one of the first institutions – and certainly the smallest – to receive the National Security Agency’s designation as a Center of Excellence in Information Security Education. As citizen-soldiers armed with our Guiding Values, Norwich graduates possess remarkable resilience and energy, with an uncommon capacity to weather challenges, to learn from them, to adapt and move forward. Innumerable alumni have made a deep and lasting impact on the world, fulfilling the mission of service to nation before self. These individuals came to Norwich to “act” as well as to “think,” to “execute” as well as to “conceive,” and to be moral, patriotic, efficient and “useful” citizens. Today, a portion of Norwich University’s storied legacy passes into the hands of those listed in this program. We are confident that they are prepared to lead and to accomplish great things!
“It is to the rising generation that we are to look for the future guardians and protectors of the inestimable rights and privileges transmitted to us by the heroes and patriots of the revolution: they are to be the future legislators, political economists, and defenders of our country; and on them is to depend, in a very great degree, the future destinies of our mighty republic.” –Captain Alden Partridge, 1828
A Man of Uncommon Integrity and Deep Compassion Norwich legends are forged out of grit, hard work and determination, and President Emeritus Richard W. Schneider is no exception. Over 28 years ago, Richard W. Schneider arrived in Northfield, Vermont to become the 23rd president of Norwich University. In his nearly three decades of transformational leadership and service, he inspired and executed his strategic vision with extraordinary competence, humility and boundless energy. Ever aware of his obligation to keep the vision of Norwich founder Captain Alden Partridge alive, to champion our mission and to honor and emulate our Guiding Values, President Emeritus Schneider served as the chief executive officer of a complex organization. As an academic leader, he ensured that students from all walks of life were prepared to assume leadership roles in a global society. A fan of student-athletes of every sport, a bridge-builder both within and outside the Norwich community, a story teller and a role-model, his exemplary leadership during the final three months of his tenure in a global pandemic will forever serve as a bookend to an incredible career. “Richard Schneider has been a transformational leader. His decades of service to Norwich will leave a lasting legacy as he asks the best questions, stimulating and deepening the thinking of others. You can always count on him to do the right thing, whether anybody’s looking or not.” – Alan DeForest ’75, Chairman Norwich University, Board of Trustees

Background and History of Baccalaureate Service While the baccalaureate degree originated at the University of Paris in the thirteenth century, the tradition of a sermon delivered to the graduating class began in a much earlier time when all universities were
religious institutions. The baccalaureate service is a long-standing tradition at Norwich University, and distinguished clergy of various faiths have spoken at baccalaureate over the years.
Architecture + Art Awards The Architecture and Art Awards Ceremony honors graduating students with nationally recognized awards of the professional fraternity of Alpha Rho Chi and the American Institute of Architects. Awards are given to
graduates who show promise either by their academic achievements or leadership in the architecture program. The School also confers awards of its own for recognition of strong design skills.
Order of the Engineer The purpose of the Order of the Engineer is to foster a spirit of pride and responsibility in the engineering profession, to bridge the gap between training and practice, and to present the public with a visible symbol of identifying the engineer, Who by reason of education, eminence and experience are deemed worthy of the Order. The Order of the Engineer requires a solemn obligation to oneself “to uphold devotion to the standards and the dignity of (the engineering) profession”. It is an obligation to turn to “practical use, the principles of science and the means of technology… to serve humanity by making the best use of earth’s precious wealth.” It is an independent organization whose
purpose is to foster a feeling of pride in and a dedication to that profession which binds the group of professionals together. The Order is symbolized by the acceptance of an “Obligation” and the wearing of a stainless steel ring on the little finger of the working hand. The “Obligation” is a composite of several creeds. It emphasizes the fact that we, as Engineers, have certain obligations. It promotes honesty and integrity, and recognizes that today’s engineers are dependent on their predecessors to gain their skills. The personal integrity of a member and respect for the good opinion of his/her peers is the discipline expected of all members of the Order.
Nurses Pinning Ceremony The tradition of the Nursing pin, and the ceremonial pinning we know today, originated in the 1860s at the Nightingale School of Nursing at St. Thomas Hospital in London. Having been recently awarded The Red Cross
of St. George for her selfless service to the injured and dying in the Crimean War, Nightingale chose to extend this honor to her most outstanding graduate nurses by presenting each of them with a medal for excellence.
Candle Lighting When the Nursing pinning ceremony was initiated in the 1860s, the lamp was a symbol of the care and devotion the nurse administers to the sick and injured
in the practice of Nursing. After nurses were pinned, Nightingale would light a lamp and pass the flame to each nurse as they said the Pledge.
Original Nightingale Pledge “I solemnly pledge myself before God and in the presence of this assembly: To pass my life in purity and to practice my profession faithfully; I will abstain from whatever is deleterious and mischievous and will not take or knowingly administer any harmful drug; I will do all in my power to maintain and elevate the standard of my profession and will hold in confidence all personal matters committed to my keeping and all family affairs coming to my knowledge in the practice of my calling; With loyalty will I endeavor to aid the physician in his work and devote myself to the welfare of those committed to my care.”
The Spencer Mace The Spencer Memorial Mace, carried by the senior member of the faculty, is the emblem of the academic authority of the University and is rich in symbolism. The wooden staff is fluted to give the appearance of fasces, the ancient Roman symbol of authority, and is bound by silver bands representing restraint. Much of the metal work above the staff is sterling silver, including the University seal, which is surrounded by laurel leaves. On the reverse side is the seal of the State of Vermont. Engraved on one side of the urn supporting the seals is a rendition of a decorative device from an 1867 diploma which depicts Athena, goddess of wisdom, the useful arts, and prudent warfare, surrounded by academic and military paraphernalia. On the opposite side of the urn is a statement of purpose from an 1843 university catalogue:
“To give our youth an education that shall be American in its character – to enable them to act as well as think – to execute as well as to conceive – to tolerate all opinions when reason is left free to combat them – to make moral, patriotic, efficient, and useful citizens, and to quality them for all those high responsibilities resting upon a citizen of this free republic – was the design of the founders of this college.” At the top of the mace is a representation of the head of a whitetail stag, and at the foot of the staff is the cone of a red spruce, the most characteristic Vermont evergreen. The mace was given to the University by Richard S. King ’68 and Dudley H. Willis ’64 as a tribute to Dana Professor of Government Eber Allen Spencer, Jr. It was designed by Professor Gary Lord and fabricated by a group of northern New England artisans working in collaboration with Paul Gross, goldsmith.
Academic Regalia The cap, gown, and hood are prominent symbols in Commencement ceremonies. They date back to the European and British Universities of the Middle Ages. The cap and gown indicated that the wearer has graduated from a university or college. The hood shows the degree the wearer holds.
Down the front, Doctor’s gowns have a velvet facing. The velvet facing and sleeve bars may be either black or the color distinctive of the wearer’s department of learning.
The Intercollegiate Commission has established a code that regulates the academic costume. Bachelor’s gowns have pointed sleeves and are generally worn closed. Master’s gowns have long, oblong sleeves and may be worn open or closed. Doctor’s gowns have bell-shaped sleeves each bearing three horizontal velvet bars.
Hoods are normally black with a colorful lining indicating the color or colors of the college or university conferring the degree. Maroon and gold are the official colors of Norwich University. The hood is bordered with velvet; the color of the velvet represents the department of learning. The colors associated with different subjects appear below.
