Norwood-Fontbonne Academy | A Sponsored Ministry of the Sisters of Saint Joseph since 1920

From the President

Dear Norwood-Fontbonne Academy Community,

As we embark on a new school year, we can also reflect on the past year and all of our success at Norwood-Fontbonne Academy. The 2023–2024 school year was one for the record books, filled with growth, success, love of God, each other, and the Dear Neighbor!

This past year, we celebrated our 50th year of coeducation at the combined Norwood-Fontbonne Academy. Our 103rd graduating class is headed for great success as they continue their academic journey in high school. The Class of 2024 earned $698,000 in scholarships!

It was wonderful to share in all of the celebrations for our 50th Snowball Tournament. We honored many of the outstanding volunteers who have led the tournament, saw the return of the Alumni Game, and saw record-breaking revenue in sponsorships supporting NFA. It was energizing to see everyone celebrating this NFA tradition.

The year also had more than its share of sadness as our community came together to mourn significant losses. Last fall, our community gathered mourning the loss of Valerie Melnick. Valerie was a dedicated and passionate educator, loving parent, and cherished member of our community. This spring, we experienced the devastating loss of Deborah and Stephen Wood, Sr. The outpouring of support from our NFA community to the Wood family was incredible and reflective of the depth of our bonds, and the amazing, impactful lives they both led.

As we begin the new year, we are all excited for the weeks and months ahead of us. We’re looking forward to coming together as a community to celebrate old traditions and to create new ones. We’re thrilled that we’re offering students more opportunities than ever before to grow as learners, from academic offerings to the arts and athletics — and everything in between. We have made incredible strides in our implementation of our Strategic Plan, Directed Toward Tomorrow, and progress continues as we grow and thrive. Norwood-Fontbonne Academy continues to achieve and advance our mission and continue the legacy of the Sisters of Saint Joseph. I hope to see each and every one of you on campus this year. Be on the lookout for more exciting updates in the near future.

In Christ’s Peace,

Dr. Ryan Killeen, Ed.D.

Families can also schedule a private tour by contacting Erin Wallin, Director of Admissions, at ewallin@norfon.org.

On May 9, 2024, students and faculty gathered in Fontbonne Commons for the Solemnity of the Ascension Mass followed by the May Crowning in the Fontbonne Courtyard. During Mass, the NFA community remembered Valerie Melnick, who passed away in October 2023. We were fortunate to have Valerie’s daughter, Alexandra ’06, join us for the May Crowning.

Remembering Debbie & Steve Wood

When you think of Norwood, you think of people like Deborah and Stephen Wood, Sr. “Debbie” proudly served as Admissions Director and then Principal from 1997 until her retirement in 2015, and “Steve” was always along for the ride, known for being a presence at every major event for nearly 30 years, from Dinner Dances to Snowball Tournaments, and often popping in to drop lunch off for Debbie.

The proud parents of Meg ’95, Elizabeth ’99, and Steve ’03, they thoroughly enjoyed watching their children learn and thrive in a community that grew to feel more like a family. They both created belonging everywhere they went: Debbie was known for mentoring and nurturing young teachers, and Steve and his brother, Skip, poured their love into the Philadelphia landmark, Woody’s, and then Knock.

“Debbie and Steve were wholeheartedly committed to children, the NorwoodFontbonne Academy community, the Sisters of Saint Joseph, and Catholic education. They were pivotal in the development of so many programs and traditions at NFA, including the Service-Learning program, the New Parent Welcome, and the meaningful bios that are read about each graduate at commencement every year,” shared Sister Jean Laurich, SSJ, who proudly served alongside Debbie for many years. “So many phrases and lessons I carry with me today originated from Debbie and Steve.”

When you walk the hallways of NFA, you can see the many evident footprints of

Debbie and Steve: the intentionality of the teachers; the strong thread of the Sisters of Saint Joseph charism; and especially, all the laughter you hear coming from the classroom of Steve Wood, Jr., the youngest child of Debbie and Steve and one of Norwood’s most beloved teachers (just ask our students).

During Debbie’s final year at Norwood, in 2015, the community rallied together to make Debbie a video called “Three Words.” Debbie was known for her leadership style and her way with words, so staff and students at the time took to describing Debbie in three words. Some of the highlights included: makes us smile; all around amazing; someone to remember; wealth of knowledge; guidance through stories; and always a leader.

NFA’s Reaching Our Dreams campaign groundbreaking for the new Fontbonne Commons and Sister James Anthony Hall addition. Debbie is joined by Sister Jean Laurich, SSJ, Mr. George Aspen, Mrs. Jackie Woolley, Mrs. Eileen DePaul, student Devlin Carey ’06, Mr. Chuck Seaton and Sister Patricia Kelly, SSJ.

“Let your life be a continuous act of love.” (Maxim 4)

“Debbie was a dynamic, instructional leader at NFA. She led initiatives like professional book studies, teacher evaluations, and curriculum mapping, and there was an understanding that if Debbie was initiating it, it was considered to be best practice in education. I learned how to be an effective teacher under the leadership of Debbie, and there was no doubt that Debbie supported her teachers to make NFA the best it could be,” shared Shannon Craige, NFA’s Director of Curriculum and Innovation.

Our community has been immensely blessed by Debbie and Steve and the beautiful legacy they leave behind. It is with that gratitude and appreciation that we venture into another school year, thankful for the many footprints they have both left on the Norwood family.

All who knew Debbie knew she always dressed with style. These are the shoes she wore to celebrate NFA being named a National Blue Ribbon School, which was one of her proudest achievements at NFA.

Lower School Play

Frozen, Jr. far exceeded our expectations as our elementary students performed for the school, family, and friends in March. The plethora of talent amongst the students was amazing and we were thrilled to have such a robust stage crew unit. Along the way, students made design decisions and took responsibility for the audio and visual aspects of the show.

Middle School Play

Let Freedom Ring!

What can they say except, YOU’RE WELCOME! The NFA middle school drama club treated our community to three undeniably shiny performances of Moana, Jr. this past May. Audiences marveled at the singing, dancing, and mystical ocean-faring put upon the SJAH stage by our talented middle school performers.

Last fall, eighth grade students in Mr. Wood’s English language arts class participated in the American Freedom Essay contest. This national writing competition was won by NFA’s very own Caroline Bender ’24 for her essay “Unshackling Faith: Exploring Religious Freedom in the United States.” By winning the Middle School category, Caroline and her eighth grade classmates were invited on a free field trip with the Constitutional Walking Tour of Philadelphia. Congratulations, Caroline!

Stock Market Game

During the spring of 2024, Thomas Bland ’24, Jack Krzywicki ’24, Ethan Nienhuis ’24, James Simonetti ’24, and Ryan Smith ’24 were honored at the The Stock Market Game Eastern Region Awards Ceremony at Cabrini University.

Students in Mr. Joe Rosowski’s math class participated in the “PA Stock Market Game,” a valued online simulation that instructs students in the stock market with crosscurriculum tools for math, business, and research instruction. Students are teamed up and given $100,000 dollars to invest in the stock market and build portfolios to compete against other students and schools in the region.

Bland and Krzywicki finished second in the region. Nienhuis, Simonetti, and Smith finished first in the region and third in the state!

First Holy Communion

Congratulations to our First Communicants from Norwood-Fontbonne Academy. May their lives be a continuous act of love! First Holy Communion took place on May 4, 2024.

NFA Students Treasure the Earth

Dr. Megan Stotz, NFA’s Media Studies Teacher, along with members of the Class of 2024, spent the school year collecting soft plastics as part of the Trex Company Recycling Challenge. The goal was to spread awareness about the crucial importance of plastic film recycling and to collect more than 1,000 pounds in order to earn the school a Trex bench crafted from recycled plastics.

With 200 pounds to go, Dr. Stotz challenged both campuses and promised that students from the winning campus (Norwood or Fontbonne) could duct tape her to the wall. In the end, the Fontbonne Campus, with a boost from JLB, won the year-end competition and had the honor of seeing Dr. Stotz suspended in duct tape glory!

In total, NFA collected more than 1,000 pounds of soft plastics. Congratulations Dr. Stotz and the 8th grade for a successful marketing campaign!

Knights of Columbus Essay Contest Winners

During the first trimester, eighthgrade students from Mrs. Riviezzo’s religion class at NFA took part in the Knights of Columbus Essay Contest, addressing the topic, “How Should the Church Spread the Faith in the Digital Era?” NFA submitted several outstanding entries, leading to our school claiming both top honors. Madelyn Kolb ’24 was named the Philadelphia Regional 1st District Winner, while James Simonetti ’24 earned the title of PA State Regional District 8th Grade Winner. Congratulations to Maddy and James!

Athletic Accomplishments

The Bears shined during the 2023–2024 school year as the varsity girls’ basketball team, led by head coach Kim Koschineg Stefan ’90 and assistant coach Dominique Rice ’15, were crowned the regular season Catholic Academies League champions. The Bears went on to win the C.A.L. playoff tournament to complete the sweep. The varsity boys’ team finished runnerup at the 50th Snowball Tournament

Led by Mr. Jim Rockenbach ’94 and Corbin Melle ’13, the NFA’s varsity football team captured the C.A.L. title in the fall. The Bears’ JV coed soccer team and JV baseball team also won league titles.

Graduation

Norwood-Fontbonne Academy honored, celebrated, and welcomed the remarkable Class of 2024 into the school’s illustrious alumni body during a special commencement ceremony on June 3 in the Fontbonne Commons. Visit www.norfon.org/2024 for more details and award winners.

Judy Riviezzo Retires

After an extraordinary teaching career spanning 50 years, Mrs. Judy Riviezzo retired at the end of the 2023–2024 school year. Mrs. Riviezzo has been an integral part of our school community since 2003, enriching the lives of countless students and colleagues with her dedication, passion, and expertise. Her journey in education also included teaching at Cecilian Academy, another sponsored ministry of the Sisters of Saint Joseph, before she joined us here at NFA.

During her tenure at NFA, Mrs. Riviezzo taught math for grades 4–6 at the Fontbonne Campus. She then transitioned to the Norwood Campus, where she inspired and guided 7th and 8th graders in English language arts. Over the past year, Mrs. Riviezzo has shared her deep faith and knowledge with students in grades 6–8 as their religion teacher.

Mrs. Riviezzo’s commitment to education extended far beyond the classroom. She was renowned for her enthusiastic promotion of service-learning, the captivating Shakespeare Festival she organized annually, and the rigorous term paper assignment that became a rite of passage for many of our students. She had a great impact on our community and will be dearly missed by students, parents, and colleagues alike. We are grateful for Mrs. Riviezzo’s commitment to NFA and forwarding the mission of the Sisters of Saint Joseph. We wish her all the best in her retirement, filled with joy, relaxation, and the satisfaction of a career well spent in the service of others.

Supporting Our Mission

What an exciting year this has been for the Mission Advancement Team at NFA! Together, our team had the opportunity to officially open our first school store, The Bear Den; celebrate the 50th anniversary of the annual Snowball Tournament; revive our Student Philanthropy Club; and of course, host our two signature fundraising events: Soirée with the Sisters and the NFA Golf Classic.

Looking ahead to this school year, we have some priorities that we’re excited to share.

• Educational Improvement Tax Credit: Would you like to redirect your state tax dollars to NFA? This process sounds too good to be true, but it could not be more simple. You have the option of redirecting your state tax liability to Norwood, and all of these contributions go directly to our financial assistance program. Please reach out to mao@norfon.org to learn more.

• Calling All Alumni: If you’re an NFA alum and looking for a unique way to give back to your alma mater, please consider joining us for Alumni Career Day, our Alumni Induction, or connect with our MAO team to learn more about a “Zooming” into one of our classrooms to teach our students more about your life post-Norwood!

• The NFA Fund: Each year, our annual fund, The NFA Fund, helps our school to make up the gap between tuition and operating expenses. In recent years, we have used these funds to improve our campus safety and security measures, to offer faculty professional development opportunities, and to even send one of our teachers to World Youth Day in Portugal! Please consider making a donation to The NFA Fund.

Thank you for your continued support as our team remains laser focused on offering a one-of-a-kind education to all of our Norwood students!

FREEDOM TO FIND Your Path

There’s something truly magical about growing up on NFA’s beautiful 14-acre campus, from the quaint houses (Carriage, Gate, Stone, White) to the welcoming, interactive learning spaces of the Fontbonne Building to the increased independence our middle school students enjoy on the Norwood Campus; it’s an incredible and joyful 11-year experience that is unlike any other school.

What really makes NFA stand out, though, is that — inspired by our dynamic Student Vision Statement — our students take ownership of their learning, are

actively engaged in the learning process and their own progress, and consistently have opportunities for growth in a curious community of learners. As a result, our students are well equipped to find their path and to become positive leaders in an ever-changing world.

Academic freedom begins at a young age as we offer two education programs, Montessori and Primary, for students age 3 – 3rd grade. We work in partnership with parents to identify the best education path for each student’s learning style. The fundamental educational philosophy of both programs empowers students to be confident and self-aware, make reflective choices, and to take ownership of their learning all within a spiritual environment through a gradual release of responsibility.

Our robust 4th–8th grade elective program gives students at this level the chance to choose where they

“NFA just sparks your desire to learn. It’s really those skills you learn here at NFA — how to be curious, how to ask questions, how to dig a layer deeper.”
— KATHERINE CRAWFORD LUTSCH ’00 P’32

want to lean in and focus their studies. Through the elective program, students are given the opportunity to have choice in their academic experience and pursue their passions to grow in an area of interest. NFA electives are connected to the arts, digital technology and communications, science and engineering, global studies, life skills, physical wellness, and social and emotional wellness.

In addition to academics, we offer our students the chance to engage their learning, passions, and curiosity well beyond the classroom; from athletics to the speech and debate club to drama performances to servicelearning. We also empower students to exhibit their leadership skills by participating in student council and joining the student ambassador team to showcase our school. Students can participate in our extracurricular

clubs from a young age and decide how they want to be involved in school life.

Physically, our historic and expansive 14-acre campus in the heart of Chestnut Hill provides students with an environment that fosters independence, openness, and active experiences. The campus also has unique indoor and outdoor learning spaces that are designed intentionally to support each developmental stage.

When students enter NFA, they embark on their own path of learning within an intentional framework and supportive community. When they graduate, our students leave us as curious, confident, and compassionate leaders that are ready to shine in the next stage of their educational journey.

WHERE IN THE WORLD is Mrs. Croney?

Mrs. Anna Marie Croney joined the NFA staff during the 1987–1988 school year. Her first seven years on campus were spent with 4th, 5th, and 6th grade teaching science and religion. She became the science coordinator and moved to 7th and 8th grade and taught life science, earth science, pre-algebra, and algebra. Mrs. Croney worked hard to bring interesting programs to NFA during her tenure including the Robotics Club, Lego League, participation with the Wissahickon Watershed Testing, and the beloved Whale Watch trip. Mrs. Croney retired from NFA in 2012.

What have you been up to since your well-earned retirement?

My four children, their spouses, and six grandchildren (ages ranging from 7 to 23!) manage to speak for a lot of my time. It doesn’t seem possible, but it has been 12 years since I retired from Norwood! Even after my retirement, me and my husband, Chuck, were still involved at NFA. I taught for a trimester, and Chuck and I led Robotics, and went on the Whale Watch until the pandemic started. With the start of the pandemic, I spent more time with my grandchildren and helping my children. We have also been able to travel more: Alaska, South Africa, Greece, Normandy, and twice to Ireland to celebrate our 50th and 55th Anniversaries with our family.

I started a book club with two friends at Old York Road Country Club with a group that has grown up to 30 ladies meeting once a month. At church I continue to sing in the choir and I am a Eucharistic Minister. Chuck and I tutor kindergarten and first grade students in Kensington and organize Project Santa.

Thinking back on your time at NFA, what was your favorite part of the school day?

I enjoyed having fun with the students and making memories. I miss the lab work, making up math songs to help us remember, and reading angel stories. I simply enjoyed being with the students and hoping that my love of learning would rub off on them.

I also enjoyed sharing my faith with the students and learning to do acts of service for others. We regularly went to St. John’s Hospice with the 7th grade and made scarves and hats for the men.

What is your most cherished NFA memory or memories?

I have so many wonderful memories of my time at NFA, but working with the teachers who cared so much, truly takes the cake. I always loved being encouraged to teach new concepts, like the Coral Reef, the Bruce Hansen Navy Ship, Plate Tectonics in Hawaii and New Zealand, teaching Statistics, and so much more.

I loved the Whale Watch the best

and how it developed over the years from writing papers to creating websites for the students.

What made you want to become a teacher?

I always loved children and always loved math so it seemed like a good match.

What are you looking forward to at the moment?

Traveling to New Zealand and Australia this winter with Chuck. Reading my next book, seeing my friends, going to church, and staying healthy.

Is there any message you would like to share with the NFA community?

I am wishing you all a wonderful new school year. Make the most of your time during the next year. Appreciate what your parents are doing for you by sending you to Norwood. Be kind to the other students and the teachers. Make some new memories!

CATCHING UP WITH Gene Maginnis ’65

1963 was one of the more memorable and tumultuous years in American history. As a bright-eyed new seventh grade student at Norwood Academy, Gene Maginnis ’65 remembers all of it.

“In November, Kennedy got shot,” said Maginnis, who transferred to NFA that autumn along with his brothers: William ’66, Anthony ’72, and Paul ’73. “That really affected the whole school when Kennedy got shot…Catholic school and Catholic president.”

But he also recalls happier milestones in his childhood, including the opportunity to finally play organized school sports.

“There were no sports at St. Gen’s,” said Maginnis. “I went to Norwood and I could play football, basketball, and baseball. The athletic director was Jim Burton and he was a great guy. That really helped make Norwood for me, that I could actually play sports.”

As a seventh grade student, Maginnis helped Norwood go undefeated and wallop St. Philips, 44–10.

Maginnis also recalls what a luxury it was for Norwood to own its own gym.

“Not a lot of schools had gyms; that was a big deal back then,” said Maginnis. “Norwood’s gym always had kids coming from other schools.”

Maginnis attended classes in the Big House on the Norwood Campus and a few of his classmates

were boarders and lived there during the school year. He even slept over in the Big House when his parents were out of town.

“My parents took a two week vacation and made arrangements with the nuns,” said Maginnis. “My brother and I stayed upstairs.”

Norwood, which started out with 48 boarders in 1920, became a day only school in 1969. When Maginnis was a student here, Norwood was still a single-sex school. Around the corner, Maginnis’ older sisters had attended Fontbonne Academy for a few years. In 1973, Norwood Academy and Fontbonne Academy merged under the leadership of Sister James Anthony (Mary) Scanlon, SSJ, forming Norwood-Fontbonne Academy, one school on two campuses.

The Flourtown native fondly remembers Sister James Anthony.

“She was the best,” said Maginnis. “Sister James Anthony was one of the best teachers ever. Everyone loved her. She taught everything in eighth grade. She ran that place and she did it in a way that everyone loved her. She was a wonderful lady. When I think of Norwood, I think of her.”

Maginnis graduated number one in his class here at Norwood and went on to La Salle College High School (1969), Georgetown University (1973), and the Villanova University School of Law (1976).

He is currently practicing law at Dugan Brinkmann Maginnis and Pace.

Fun fact: in 1984, Maginnis captured the inaugural Golf Association of Philadelphia Middle-Amateur Championship on his home course, Whitemarsh Valley Country Club.

Elaine Battaglia Marquardt ’91

Work is extra exciting these days for Elaine Battaglia Marquardt ’91, a commercial real estate consultant, as she and her team find solutions for businesses looking to relocate to Philadelphia in a post-COVID world.

“It’s been really interesting,” said Marquardt, who serves as the Managing Director of Savills’ Philadelphia office. “It’s been the same for so long and we’re now relooking at the way we’ve done things. The year before COVID was the busiest and most successful year we ever had, and we’ve been so busy coming out of the pandemic, and answering questions like ‘how do you redesign the office to meet new needs?’”

Marquardt loves her work and the variety of clients that come with commercial real estate.

In addition to leading the Savills team in Philadelphia, Marquardt co-leads the company’s women’s network. She also volunteers her time in a number of ways, including, but not limited to, serving on the Board of Directors at the Union League and serving on the board for the Sierra Group Foundation, an organization that is dedicated to increasing employment for people with disabilities in America.

There was a time, though, when Marquardt wasn’t always so outgoing or outspoken. When she arrived on the Norwood Campus as a new sixth grade

student, she was quiet and timid.

“I will tell you that my parents sent me to NFA because I was shy and reserved and I wasn’t speaking up,” said Marquardt. “And when they sent me to that school it changed my life. When I left NFA, I was confident and outgoing and was just happy. I believe it because they gave me the ability to express myself, to be creative, and they worked with you more individually. They always made it feel like your ideas mattered.”

The Battalgia family, including Elaine and her younger brother, Raymond ’95, moved from Northeast Philadelphia to Huntingdon Valley and learned about NFA from their neighbors, the Burns Family (Carina ’91 and Michael ’88).

“I remember walking into this bigger space in 6th grade,” said Marquardt. “It was a creative environment to learn in and express yourself.”

Marquardt also recalls her first “taste of freedom” after school as she and her new friends walked up and down Germantown Avenue and stopped in Fiesta Pizza or Mango.

“It was my first experience of being wild and free,” said Marquardt. “I’ll always remember that…going to Rosebuds with my good friend Molly or being at her house.”

In 8th grade, as part of the NFA Invention Convention, Marquardt

“NFA was lifechanging for me.”
— ELAINE BATTAGLIA MARQUARDT ’09

was selected to appear on The Dr. Fad Show, which was a popular children’s invention TV show in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Marquardt not only appeared on the show with her telephone alarm invention that she created with her dad, but won a trip to Florida.

Marquardt continued her education at Mount Saint Joseph Academy before receiving a Bachelor of Science with a dual concentration in marketing and finance from Fordham University and completing the G.L.O.B.E. International Business Program.

“NFA was life-changing for me,” said Marquardt. “I thought it was the most magical place.”
