FO N R EW 20 18 BEGINNING-TO-READ™

Each book contains resources to assist caregivers and educators in the process of building a child’s literacy and comprehension.

Audio Read-Alongs

Pairing the Read and Discover books with Dear Dragon titles focusing on the same concept allows you to incorporate “Twin Texts” to support the balance of reading nonfiction and fiction. This is an integral goal of the Common Core State Standards. Research cites that twin texts help encourage the enjoyment of reading while capitalizing on students’ fascination with facts. Seasons, Sports, Holidays, Community Places, The Natural World, Character Education — each of these groupings has 4 sets of 2 books.

Learning to read can be lots of fun! With BTR Audio Read-Alongs, emergent readers listen while reading along with some of our most popular books. This audio support helps young readers develop phonemic awareness and fluency by synchronizing the image of a word with the sound of that word, and ultimately, the meaning of that word. In a busy classroom or library setting, BTR Audio Read-Alongs provide an opportunity for young readers to practice independent reading without adult supervision. Each volume contains a CD with 4 audio books and a set of matching paperback print books in a handy clear bag. English and Bilingual sets to choose from.

Pair-It! Twin Texts

16

Pairing the Read and Discover books with Dear Dragon titles focusing on the same concept allows you to incorporate “Twin Texts” to support the balance of reading nonfiction and fiction that is an integral goal of the Common Core State Standards. Research cites that twin texts help encourage the enjoyment of reading while capitalizing on students’ fascination with facts. Educators can begin by reading the nonfiction book to build background, which helps support comprehension of the related fiction. Alternately, starting with the fiction, you can spark your child’s interest and expand his or her knowledge of the topic with the nonfiction text. Book Features

The following features appear in each book in the series.

SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY

iScience Puzzle Each iScience book includes a puzzle to encourage critical thinking skills. Using real-life situations, the puzzle introduces a problem that an understanding of science can help solve. The text takes the reader through science concepts, continually referring to the puzzle while the reader can start to solve the puzzle using reasoning and the process of elimination.

LEVEL B

Discover Activity A hands-on activity that helps the reader connect the puzzle to science by observing science in action. Solve the iScience Puzzle After the necessary concepts have been explained, the reader is encouraged to solve the puzzle. If there is more than one way to solve the puzzle, the reader decides which solution they would choose. Beyond the Puzzle Further challenges await to reinforce the concepts and stretch the imagination. Science at Work Each book contains a section on careers in science that relate to the book’s topic.

Review of World Money

World money is more than dollars, pesos, or yen. Instead, this entry in the How Money Works series takes a broader look at the global economy. It begins with bartering systems, the development of money, and early international trade routes. Accompanied by cartoon illustrations, color photographs, and charts, the accessible text continues with topics related to international banking and markets, such as currency exchange, imports and exports, trade balance, bill of exchange, and gold reserves. The authors add a human element by discussing ways to eliminate world poverty and third-world debt and increase fair trade and aid during global disasters. A thoughtprovoking conclusion encourages students to consider ways to de-emphasize money and wealth and create more equity and well-being around the world. Additional discussion questions provide great debate starters. — Booklist O rder E mail :

CRITICAL THINKING & SOCIAL ISSUES

INDIVISIBLE

America is not easy. It’s a land of high ideals and stirring icons, but it is also a land of harsh realities. We celebrate the incredible achievements of individuals as we turn our gaze from hunger and homelessness in the streets. We have a difficult time matching our words with our deeds. This is where poetry comes in. A poem has the ability to personalize the ideal, to make it tangible in a way that a speech or news report cannot. It can widen the angle through which we view society. It can move us to action. The poems in this anthology do just that: confront, challenge, and inspire. They take us on a journey toward social justice, starting in the shadows and slowly working our way home.

Review of Indivisible “In their introduction to this unique, timely collection, the coeditors write, “These poems have been selected and arranged and offered to the reader as our contributions to living in a more socially just America.” To that end, they have selected 54 previously published works by twentieth-century poets. The work represents a broad variety of races, cultures, and ethnicities and deals with such issues as bigotry and injustice, as well as with freedom, equality, and comity. Divided into five sections, the poems essentially chart a course from outside our culture to an inside where we can celebrate common dreams. The contributors range from the celebrated—Billy Collins, Ishmael Reed, Pat Mora, William Stafford—to the lesser known, and brief biographies of all are included in an appendix. Matthew Thomas Bush’s elegantly decorative line drawings illustrate the pages without overwhelming the selections, and a foreword from rap artist Common will help draw more attention to this thought-provoking anthology for classroom sharing, broad discussion, and individual appreciation.” —BOOKLIST, April 2013

CRITICAL THINKING AND SOCIAL ISSUES CRITICAL THINKING & SOCIAL ISSUES

GREAT DEBATES is an information-packed series that stimulates critical thinking with tough questions. Each book in the series aligns with the Common Core Language Arts Anchor Standards for Reading Informational Text and Speaking and Listening. GREAT DEBATES takes its name from the spirited discourse that surrounds each historical theme in the series. The narrative pauses at defining moments and “drops in” on influential Americans battling over two sides of a key issue. Readers learn how arguments are framed, and make eye-opening connections between great debates from the past and the ones that are taking place today. Text strengthens critical thinking skills with open-ended questions concerning social issues and history. Readers are invited to “find their own voice” and get involved if they find they have an interest in the issue.
