Sending good wishes to all our members as we continue to cope with and adapt to the very different lifestyle which has been brought about by the Coronavirus Covid 19 pandemic. As the days and weeks have blurred into one another, it seems to be a very long time since we met for our last meeting in March, before the lockdown restrictions began. At the present time, despite the easing of some restrictions, it is highly unlikely that we will be able to meet, at least before the autumn, but even then we would still have to be guided by the need to keep everyone safe and well. The strawberry tea, due to be held at the Blue Bell Inn, Rothley, on 13th July, and the meeting scheduled for 10th August have both been cancelled. It would be good if we could look forward to meeting in September, but we will have to await developments regarding possible further lifting of social distancing guidance before we could do so safely. Meanwhile, we move on patiently in the firm hope that we will meet again to enjoy the friendship and camaraderie that is the hallmark of The Monday Club. Take care everyone.

Protecting Your Family’s Inheritance Charnwood District Scouts Article by Stephen Wray
When the lock down hit, Charnwood Scouts had to postpone the planned St Georges activity weekend… or did they? With everyone at home, daily life turned upside down and no one knowing when we can see each other again, Charnwood Scouts decided to bring everyone together for a special event, the St Georges Day Virtual Camp. The camp took place online with nearly 500 young people and Leaders from every group in Charnwood involved, all taking part in the full camp experience from their very own homes. The camp started Friday evening, like any camp, with everyone pitching tents or making dens inside and outside to sleep in for the weekend. Later in the evening the camp was officially opened by the District Commissioner Paul over video followed by a live video quiz! On Saturday the day started with a renewal of the Scout promise followed by a programme of activities for each of the section. The activities ranged from science experiments where they could create lava lamps, volcanoes or rockets to using stationary to make catapults and cross bows. The young people were also encouraged to cook their own meals, and for some of them their family’s meals, during the weekend. Saturday evening saw a campfire with a difference, those who were able built their own fires in the garden and everyone gathered round and sang along to campfire songs and made s’mores. It was stated earlier that nearly 500 young people and Leaders took part, that was not strictly accurate as through out the duration of the camp we saw mums, dads, brothers, sisters and even grandparents get involved with all the activities, be it helping with the crafts, making their own St George Sword and even sleeping outside in the tent. From all the images and videos shared you can see so much enjoyment on the faces of the young people and we saw families come together and share in the memorable experience. The camp didn’t finish there, on Sunday morning Revd Wendy Dalrymple, the rector of All Saints Church in Loughborough, who also joined in the camp all weekend lead us in an all inclusive thought of the day and moment of reflection. Camp may have ended but that isn’t the end of the virtual Scout experience with more virtual events currently being planned, so watch this space!

Article by Klara Hesling
Most people hope that their estate will pass on to their children and grandchildren eventually. But this will not happen for many, unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay for care home fees. The solution to help protect your estate is a Will incorporating a Property Protection Trust (PPT). A testamentary PPT can only be executed whilst both partners remain alive. Upon death of the first partner, their Will specifies that their share of the property is placed into trust and names the ultimate beneficiary of this share, normally the children and grandchildren of the deceased. The surviving partner, under the terms of the Trust, has the unequivocal right to remain living in the property for the rest of their life. On the death of the second partner the Trust comes to an end and the property passes to the beneficiaries. As the surviving partner does not own the deceased's share of the property it is fully protected for the beneficiaries, so if the surviving partner requires care, or even remarries, this share of the children's inheritance is protected. This last point can be of particular interest to couples who have come together and have children from different partners. A PPT can help each person in a relationship ensure that their children inherit their share of the property, while giving their surviving partner the ability to live in the property for the rest of their life. If the surviving partner wants to move to another property they can still sell the property and the proceeds be used to purchase a new property; the terms of the Trust remain over the new property. Kornerstone Wealth Protection and Legal services will assess your current circumstances and arrange the trust that will provide the best protection for you, your family and your assets.

Deborah Taylor Borough Councillor for Anstey
T: 0116 2350126 E: cllr.deborah.taylor@charnwood.gov.uk The country is slowly starting to come out of the lockdown and more shops and services are starting to open their doors. Charnwood Borough Council have been working with local businesses to support them to open safely and ensure social distancing is maintained. You may have seen the markings on the pavements around The Nook to remind shoppers to maintain a twometre distance between each other. The Council’s Southfields offices are beginning to open for key staff who are unable to work from home, but this is being kept to a minimum and most staff continue to work from home. For councillors, we are continuing to work from home and all meetings are remaining on the ‘virtual’ platform. The Council’s annual meeting is being held virtually on Monday 29th June where Cllr Snartt will become the Mayor of Charnwood for the year 2020/2021 and Anstey Councillor Paul Baines will become the Deputy Mayor for the year 2020/2021. It will be the first time all the councillors have been together since we went into lockdown and we hope the technology works! Covid-19 Recovery Covid-19 Recovery is now fully up and running. Charnwood’s Cabinet approved a paper at their meeting on 4th June to agree the approach to take recovery forward. Below is how the recovery plan is organised and is the main focus for the council to bring the community out of this pandemic. The Recovery Group The Recovery Group will have oversight across the whole organisation and will provide leadership and guidance. The Recovery Group is chaired by the Chief Executive, Rob Mitchell and includes other members of the senior leadership team. The aim of the Recovery Group is to oversee the Community, Economic and Organisational Recovery Cells and provide support where required. Below is the remit of the three groups set up to oversee more detailed work: Community Recovery Cell • Building stronger communities • Building safe spaces • Building community connections • Building a lasting legacy Economic Recovery Cell • Building back a better future • Backing our businesses • Managing a safe and welcome return • The Council’s economic resilience Organisational Recovery Cell • Ensure Charnwood Borough Council is a safe place to work and visit • Review the way the council does business going forward • Review the use of Council buildings Council's Garden Waste Service Charnwood Borough Council has returned its garden waste service to its normal fortnightly collections from Monday 15th June. The service has been operating in a limited capacity since the end of April following a period of suspension due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Council and its waste partner Serco are content that

staffing levels will now allow the fortnightly collections to resume. It also means that from 15th June, customers will leave their bins out on their normal garden waste collection day and not a Monday as they have been asked to do over the past few weeks. The schedule can also be found on the Council website at: www. charnwood.gov.uk/gw_returns The first collection for Anstey is Thursday 25th June and then on a fortnightly basis. Please put your garden waste bin out by 6am on the day of collection. Bulky Waste Residents in Charnwood can now apply online for a bulky waste collection. Bookings will be taken on a first come first served basis and residents can book collections using the online form on the website: www.charnwood.gov.uk/pages/special_collections Collections take place every Monday, and the deadline for collections is 3pm on the Friday. Please ensure your items are out for collection from 6am on Mondays. Before you book a collection please consider whether your items could be of use to someone else. Items collected are broken up and not re-homed, so if items are reusable it is much better for them to go to charities/organisations that can find a new home for them. Charities such as SOFA, The British Heart Foundation, Sue Ryder, Loros, Sense and many more can often arrange to collect your items for free, and all donations support their work in the local community. There are also a number of other reuse sites such as: Freecycle, Freegle, EcoBees that enable you to re-home your items. Please note: Some of these charities may not currently be in operation due to the Coronavirus pandemic. For further information and to find the details of other charity organisations please see: www.lesswaste.org.uk The Leicestershire County Council-run refuse and recycling sites are currently closed in Loughborough and Shepshed, but Mountsorrel is open on an appointment-only basis. You can check for updates on: www.leicestershire.gov.uk/waste-and-recycling. Please remember if someone takes your waste away for you and dumps it illegally, you could be the one who lands in court. To help cover the cost of arranging the collections there is a £20 charge for each three items. For example: up to three items = £20, up to 6 items = £40, up to 9 items = £60. Maximum number of items per order is nine. If you have any questions about bulky waste collection charges, head to our the FAQ webpage: www.charnwood.gov.uk/pages/ bulky_waste_charges_faqs Charnwood inBusiness Charnwood has launched a campaign to help local companies connect with their customers as they battle back from the economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic. The Council has teamed up with the Leicester Mercury, Leicestershire Live, Loughborough and Shepshed Echo and Fosse 107 (the advertising places with Fosse 107 are now all full) to offer local companies the chance to take a
free advert and let tens of thousands of people know that they are very much open for business. The Council has also highlighted local businesses, their successes and their stories, on its own social media accounts and website as part of the campaign. The Council are very keen to support businesses as social distancing restrictions continue to ease, supporting local businesses in any way they can and one key issue for local companies will be about reconnecting with their customers. Whilst we still must all follow the latest government advice as we continue to tackle the pandemic, it is also important that we get our economy going again and that means letting people know Charnwood is very much in business. The campaign has also celebrated the successes of local companies and shared their stories as they make their way back to the 'new normal’. Since the start of the pandemic, Charnwood Borough Council has supported businesses in several ways including the rapid distribution of nearly £30 million of government funding to more than 2,400 local companies. The Council has commissioned Love Loughborough to provide business support to companies across the borough.
0116 2505 848
The Charnwood inBusiness offer of a free advert is only open to businesses based in Charnwood. Businesses can apply online before midnight on 1st July and there is a limit to the number of businesses which can be supported. To apply and for the full terms and conditions, please visit: www.charnwood.gov.uk/cib Loughborough Town Deal Residents and businesses are being encouraged to have their say and contribute towards a plan which will shape the future of Loughborough. The Loughborough Town Deal is aiming to secure up to £25 million of government funding to transform the town and has drawn up a draft investment plan which is now out for consultation. The project is being led by the Loughborough Town Deal board involving a range of organisations, including Charnwood Borough Council, Loughborough University, Loughborough College, Love Loughborough, Leicestershire County Council, the Leicester and Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership, Charnwood Together Economy and Skills Group, local businesses and Loughborough MP Jane Hunt.

David Snartt Borough Councillor for Forest Bradgate
T: 01530 244804 - E: cllr.david.snartt@charnwood.gov.uk Annual Meeting Due to the current situation with the coronavirus pandemic the annual meeting of Charnwood Borough Council was delayed. This is the meeting when the Mayor is proposed for the next mayoral year. At the time of writing, all being well, I will become Mayor of Charnwood on the 29th June. I will update you next month on how this virtual meeting progressed, and information on my charities for the year.
June for the Newtown Linford Parish. From now on, residents will need to leave their bins out on their normal garden waste collection days, making sure they are out by 6am on the day of collection.
Flooding After the very heavy downpour during consecutive days of rain during June, this unfortunately caused a large amount of flooding in Newtown Linford. Sadly, flood water entered properties in varying degrees and having a devastating impact for the residents affected.
Protect Yourself From Scams Unfortunately during these unprecedented times, there is an increase of online and doorstep scams. Beware of people offering or selling: Virus testing kits - these are only by the NHS: Vaccines or miracle cures - there are currently no vaccines or cures: Overpriced or fake goods to protect yourself from coronavirus - such as antibacterial products: Fake shopping or medication collection service - if you need help with these things contact Charnwood Community Action 01509 631750: Home cleaning services.
I met with a technician from the County Council to understand more fully the root causes of these latest flood problems with a view to find solutions for a long term solution to the current problems. Two main areas were discussed; Water cascading down the footpath which leads to Tyburn in Bradgate Park. On inspection the source of the water was a newly dug ditch which was filling with water from land above the ditch, which was then unable to discharge sufficiently causing the excess water to flow over into the footpath area down to the Main Street. The other area of concern was the large amount of water coming down from Sharpley Hill area. This seems to be a long outstanding issue which, in my view, appears to be the inadequacy of the drainage system which cannot cope with large amounts of water that enters Main Street from Sharpley Hill and surrounding fields. I was grateful that the technician visited and spoke to many residents affected by this latest flooding. I am sure he has a better understanding of the current issues and hopefully with this information, will make recommendations to overcome the existing problems. I was also grateful to the Parish Clerk Hannah, for the support she gave to residents when help was needed, along with officers from Charnwood Borough Council for supplying the inflatable bags to help protect dwellings. Street Parking Issues Since the re-opening of Bradgate Park, I have received complaints about the amount of vehicles parked sometimes dangerously and inconsiderately around the Newtown Linford Parish, not only in the centre of the village, but on Roecliffe Road and the top of Sharpley Hill. I know this has been a long outstanding issue, but, in my view, has become more of an issue now that people are not taking holidays and may not be for some time to come. Therefore, visits to Bradgate are more likely. I have been working with the Parish Council and County Councillor, Deborah Taylor to put forward a plan which incorporates the findings of the Parish traffic survey that was completed by over 90 residents. These recommendations along with ones outlined by the County Council are now with the County Council to be approved for installation, subject to the finance being raised. I have also received many complaints about problems with social distancing adjacent to the main entrance to Bradgate. This was generally around the attendance of an ice cream van parked in the restricted parking bay area. I understand measures will be in place soon to overcome the difficulties that have recently prevailed. Fortnightly Brown Bin Collection Charnwood Borough Council announced garden waste, brown bins, have returned to the usual fortnightly collections from Monday 15th June. I hope the first ‘back to normal’ collection went smoothly on Wednesday 17th June for Woodhouse Parish and Thursday 25th

Deborah Taylor County Councillor for Bradgate Division
T: 0116 2350126 - E: deborah.taylor@leics.gov.uk Things are beginning to carry on as they were as the lockdown guidance is slowly starting to be eased. I am still working from home, and all my meetings are conducted ‘virtually’. I am slowly getting used to the new ‘normal’ and have bought a new microphone to use in my meetings! I am also continuing to support residents and deal with various issues as they arise. Retail shops are beginning to open and schools are welcoming more children back into class. In the latest data up to the 15th June, there were 16,535 pupils attending schools across Leicestershire, which is 18.12% of the total school population. The Government has announced that they will continue with Free School Meals vouchers through a summer school fund. This will provide a sixweek voucher scheme for children eligible for free school meals. The birth registration process has now been reintroduced at Anstey Frith House Registration Office at County Hall and over 500 requests for an appointment were received within the first week. It is anticipated Loughborough and Coalville Registration offices will be open to receive appointments in the week commencing 22nd June. Parish Councils are starting to get back to some sort of (new) ‘normality’. I am attending as many of my Parish’s Zoom meeting as I can, and I am in contact with my Clerks to deal with any issues arising within their parishes. I have been chasing for dates for outstanding work that needs to be completed, but due to Coronavirus, non-urgent work has been delayed. I am assured that the bus stop relocation from Leicester Road to Stadon Road, Anstey is on the jobs list to be completed as soon as possible and the same with the highway safety bollards outside the Post Office on Bradgate Road, Anstey. On Friday 19th June, I was able to visit John Storer in Loughborough to see the work of Charnwood Community Action. They have delivered over 5000 food parcels to people in need across the whole of Charnwood. They are also making welfare calls and befriending calls and the team will be supporting residents for the foreseeable future. It is a very slick operation, set up very quickly, and I was delighted to be able to visit and thank everyone personally for their hard work over the last 12 weeks. If anyone is in need of support, the team can be contacted at: www. jscharnwood.org.uk Along with the council work, I have been volunteering as a driver for Glenfield Pharmacy, when I can, delivering prescriptions to patients. I have been travelling across local villages and it is nice to get out and about in communities, even through it has rained on most of the days I have volunteered! A personal highlight was during June with the celebration of my Mother-in-Law’s 100th Birthday. I know there are many people in Anstey who know Gladys Taylor. Gladys had a wonderful day at a 1920s Gatsby birthday party, organised by her care home, George Hythe House. We were the only family allowed to attend and due to the rain on the day, the party was held inside, but they opened the garden doors so we could join the party from a social distance in

the garden. Thank you for the many good wishes sent to her on the day, she was very grateful and thoroughly enjoyed the whole day. Leicestershire Trading Standards Scams and doorstep crime are an ongoing issue and unfortunately the current pandemic has resulted in those unscrupulous people trying to take advantage. It was reported to Action Fraud that scams related to Covid-19 increased by 400% in one month alone. Trading Standards are trying to issue scam warnings to as many residents as possible, on as many platforms as they can. Warnings are sent via their Facebook page, Police Neighbourhood Link emails and to local Parish councils. Members of the public should ignore scam products such as supplements and anti-virus kits that falsely claim to cure or prevent COVID-19. In some cases, individuals may be pressurised on their own doorsteps to buy anti-virus kits or persuaded into purchasing products that are advertised on their social media feeds. In addition, some call centres that previously targeted UK consumers with dubious health products are now offering supplements that supposedly prevent COVID-19. While there are genuine groups of volunteers providing help during self-isolation, there have been reports of criminals preying on residents – often older people or people living with long-term health conditions – by cold-calling at their homes and offering to go to the shops for them. The criminals often claim to represent charities to help them appear legitimate before taking the victim’s money. There are genuine charities providing support, so consumers should be vigilant and ask for ID from anyone claiming to represent a charity. COVID-19 scams identified include: • Doorstep crime • Online scams • Refund scams • Counterfeit goods • Telephone scams • Loan sharks More information on all the above scams can be found on the links below. Bradgate Park I have spent a large amount of the last month dealing with the effects of the Bradgate Park re-opening and the huge number of visitors to the village of Newtown Linford. I have been pressing officers from the Highway Department to look at solutions to the many cases of dangerous and obstructive parking on the roads, verges and pavements. We are looking at proposals to have a blanket ban on parking around the whole of Bradgate Park and all three of their entrances. We have received some funding from the County Council, but we need to now look to other areas for funding of the rest of the scheme. These proposals could also affect Anstey and Cropston, so I am having discussions with both of these Parish Councils to ensure they are fully aware of the issues. Once more information is available, I will share in my monthly reports. The County Council has also agreed to temporarily suspend some of the limited parking bays on Main Street, in front of the businesses in that area. This is to safely widen the pavement to ensure these businesses are able to offer a takeaway service while maintaining social distances. This is a very busy area of the village and I welcome this proposals to ensure the safety of residents and businesses. Flooding Newtown Linford has suffered from some flash floods in June, given the week of heavy rain. Over 20 properties were affected and we also had large amounts of debris swept into the roads and drains. Charnwood Borough Council acted very swiftly and delivered sand bags to the properties to protect from further flooding and also to properties at risk. I also contacted the Flood Department at the County Council and an Officer came out the next day to visit all the affected properties. The reasons for some of the flooding was identified and the officers at the County Council will now contact the land owners to ask them to carry out further work on their land to prevent any further flooding. The debris that ended up in the road was thankfully cleared up by a group of volunteering residents, but it has also blocked the main drains. This is affecting the flow of rain water and I have asked for the highway team to attend as a matter of urgency to clear the drain out.
the safety and vitality of residents and businesses. Visitors are encouraged to support our local businesses, but to do so safely by following the guidance. GoLearn classes were suspended in March due to the coronavirus pandemic. But now, with staff working from their homes across Leicestershire, learning is up and running again across many subject areas – this time online. The resources and activities are available to anyone who might like to use the time to learn a new skill or get creative in these uncertain times, as well as to those already enrolled to help them continue their studies. Resources are available on the GoLearn virtual classroom at www.leics-als.ac.uk/course/view.php?id=4296 and classes include: • Learning for Wellbeing • Family Learning • Digital Skills • Languages • Learning for Independence • Employment and Career Support Anyone wishing to request resources can email lals. llddcurriculum@leics.gov.uk, or call the Central Enrolment Line on 0800 988 0308, and a member of the team will be in contact to discuss the best resources available on an individual basis. GoLearn's website will be updated regularly with new courses and skills to enjoy learning, so check back regularly to see the latest. If you have any issues or concerns, I’m here to help.
Flooding is an awful experience for home owners and there is very little that can be done when the floods happen so quickly. I will continue to press the council to ensure that land owners take the action they need to, to prevent this happening again.
Various methods are being employed to help people stay safe. They include: • the installation of floor markings, barriers and signage to support social distancing • addition of hand sanitizer stations in some areas • staff or volunteers being present in some shopping areas in Leicestershire to assist people and monitor the situation • issuing of guidance to traders in some areas to help them protect customers and employees inside their premises • introduction of one-way systems for pedestrians and traffic • suspension of some parking bays to provide more pedestrian space • closure of some streets Town and village centres are reminding shoppers that they must always follow the social distancing rules as this is still one of the fundamental ways the nation is tackling the pandemic. Town and village centres have been redesigning into covid-19 secure shopping areas at a time when rules are constantly changing but businesses continue to be adaptable and flexible to ensure

Anstey Nomads
Article by Adam Etheridge Anstey Nomads are moving ahead with their preparations for the 2020/21 season as they return to training, and there will be a new face in the coaching staff when they do hit the pitch in late June. Kelvin Granger, the former Saffron Dynamo boss, will join Tony Blanchard’s backroom team as the Nomads look to push for the top end of the United Counties League Premier Division when non-league football resumes. “We’re delighted to have Kelvin on board” said Blanchard “I’ve known him for a few years now and think he’ll be a great addition to the coaching staff. He’s enthusiastic and has a great work ethic, he’s also shown that he knows how to win and get the best out of his players.” Granger, whose career in football began playing as a winger, has worked for several clubs throughout the county, steadily progressing up the football pyramid. Whilst playing for Cosby United Reserves Kelvin was asked to take over as Manager, quickly moving on to bigger challenge as the reserve team Manager with Saffron Dynamo. After just a year at Saffron, Granger was put forward for the vacant Barwell Reserves Manager role “I went and met the Chairman and was just blown away by the facilities, I jumped at the opportunity. On reflection, it might have been too big a step for me at that stage of my career, but I did learn a lot from the experience, it definitely made me a better Manager.” After his spell with The Canaries Kelvin had numerous offers, deciding upon Aylestone based St. Andrews. “I took on the Reserves with The Saints, the year they made the semi-final of the FA Vase. It was great to be around Adam Hart, he’s a fantastic coach and someone that was great to learn from. After taking a year off from being on the sidelines, Granger got back to playing, spending a season with Lutterworth Town Reserves before stepping back in to the hotseat as player/manager. “It was an amazing season for the club, the first team won promotion to the UCL, not losing a single match and drawing just the one. My reserve side went one better and won every match in the league and the league cup. It was incredible to be a part of such an achievement across the club.” After that remarkable season, the Saff approached Kelvin to offer him his first opportunity at first team management. “It was a no-brainer for me to go back to Saffron, it was a tremendous step up and a fantastic chance to really test myself.” Dynamo were in the Leicestershire Senior League Premier Division when Granger arrived. “We had a couple of seasons in the prem” recalled Kelvin, “We were runners-up in my second season, earning promotion to the United Counties League Division One.” After leading the Saff to their highest ever league position, Granger decided the time was right to move on. “I’m definitely sad to leave there, there are some fantastic people at the Club and I will miss them all, but it’s the right time to move on to a fresh challenge.” “I’ve known Tony for a few years, he’s a great Manager and I’m really looking forward to learning from him now. Having spoken to the Chairman as well and seeing the plans for the future of Anstey Nomads, I know that this club is heading in the right direction and I’m excited to be a part of that journey.” As well as the return of the senior side, the Nomads junior section is back in full swing. The Club are always looking for new players and can be contacted through their website www.ansteynomads.com

Loughborough Rotary Does It For Rainbows Article by Linda Thompson
Members of Loughborough Rotary Club are walking, running and cycling around Leicestershire during the Lockdown, to raise money for Rainbows, our local children’s hospice. They aim to raise £1,000 by Day 100 of the Lockdown, which also marks the end of the Rotary year. YOU can help by making a donation at https:// justgiving.com/fundraising/loughborough-rotary Dick Howard, 83, started his physical challenge much earlier, and has already completed a million steps, covering a distance of more than 400 miles, all from his home in Newtown Linford. His wife Sue accompanied him on most of these walks, taking the photo of him completing his challenge in the rain at Old John, in Bradgate Park. Rainbows, the hospice for children and young people in the East Midlands, was chosen as the beneficiary charity, given the negative impact the Lockdown will have had on their fundraising income. The hospice accepted children from hospital in the early days of Covid-19, in order to provide them with a safer environment. The rainbow has also become synonymous with the pandemic, particularly for children. Gary Farnfield, a community fundraiser with Rainbows, says “Loughborough Rotary Club has a longstanding relationship with Rainbows, and we are delighted to be the beneficiary of their Lockdown Challenge”.

Anstey Chess Club Article by Ben Vaughan Hello everyone! As I'm sure you're aware, COVID-19 has had a grip over the country and the world over the past couple of months. Chess has very much had to take a back seat. From the bottom of our hearts, we - as Anstey Chess Club - hope that you and your family have managed to stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic. Results There has been no OTB (Over the board) chess over the last few months but the League Management Committee (which I am a part of) did meet via Zoom on 16th June. People are starting to be able to move about etc under Government guidelines so there were decisions to be made about the existing season (which is still incomplete) and the next season and the future. The decision was taken by the LMC - unanimously by those present - to recalculate league positions based on the amount of points per game accrued so far in the season. The net result for Anstey Chess Club is that the first team are now DIVISION 4 CHAMPIONS! Not in the circumstances we would have preferred but an excellent result for us nevertheless. The second team finished in a respectable seventh place out of 9.
Pre Season Training Is Underway And Our AGM Is Next For Anstey RFC
Article by Chris Apperley After finishing the 2019/20 season (albeit early) top of our league your village rugby club is already underway preparing for the 2020/21 season whenever that might start. 100% complying with Government rules training started in mid June with groups of six taking part in non contact fitness and basic routines. Guidelines set out by the Rugby Football Union and Leicestershire Rugby Union were followed and we look forward to when it will be possible to move onto the next stage of preparations moving towards playing the sport again. If you would like to get involved contact either our Club Coach and Chairman Shane Frear on 07725 642525 or Captain Liam Curtiss on 07727 118362 The Anstey RFC Annual General Meeting will take place on 5th July. At the time of writing we are waiting for some further Government announcements to be made in a couple of days time which may allow a physical meeting outdoors of some sort, if not a virtual AGM will be organised via Zoom.
In terms of the future, we simply do not know. There will be a 2020/21 season but when that will be and the amount of participants willing to play OTB chess may dwindle because everybody's safety has to come first. The LMC are meeting at the beginning of August again and we will hopefully know more by then. Website - Reminder We have a NEW website. After much scouring of the internet/looking at other sports clubs and what they do - a considerable amount of research, even if I do say so myself - we have found a new host for our site. www.pitchero.com/clubs/ansteychessclub Feel free to have a browse if you have a spare minute or two. Stay safe and well everybody.

Slimming World Group Update
Article by Sheila Timms
Article by Louise Valk
While Anstey WI has been unable to meet, members have been staying in touch via phone, email and their newly formed WhatsApp group. The last two have been invaluable for keeping spirits up with humorous or inspiring pictures and video clips.
I (Louise Valk) currently run Birstall, Anstey and Groby Slimming
One member became a grandma for the first time, another celebrated her Ruby Wedding, and there have been numerous birthdays. Many of us celebrated the 75th anniversary of VE Day in our gardens. Thank heaven for gardens! Numerous members have been busy crafting, making masks and headbands to make them more comfortable for NHS staff, as well as knitted or crocheted hearts to help patients and their next of kin feel a little closer while no visitors were allowed. Others have been making baby blankets for the Sands charity which helps those whose babies have died. As lockdown is being eased, we are looking forward to being able to meet again, at least in small groups.
World groups. Since we closed the doors of our physical groups in local venues due to COVID 19 lockdown it's been fantastic to see the amazing support not just for weight loss but as friends in such a difficult time for many. We've met weekly on Zoom and members have continued their Slimming World journeys, particularly important through isolation and the caring and sharing is second to none. Members have continued to shine and in May lost an amazing 54 stones between them. We've seen members achieve 4 1/2 stone awards, lose 10 %b of their body weight and also achieved their target dreamweights. It's been heartwarming to see how members as friends continue to support each other with their weight loss journeys and their mental health. I've lost 3 stone with Slimming World before I became the local area consultant. I know that it's not just about the weight you lose but the life you gain. Who would have thought that when our physical groups had to
Too Many Sleepless Nights? Article by Gary Trickett Sleeplessness has become one of society’s biggest problems. From worries about work, money, to your sleeping environment and of course Covid, there are many contributing factors that can result in sleepless nights.
close their doors that the power of community would strive with the connection of social media, and Zoom video platforms plus good old fashioned consultant personal support. Its been fabulous to introduce a weekly raffle and we are proud so far to have raised an average of £29 per week for local charities, to date this has included LOROS and Islastones Foundation. The winner of the weekly Slimming World themed raffle chooses the charity to donate the proceeds to. In this time when charities have been struggling it's been great to help. Amy has lost over 3 stone in 24 weeks and is still moving forward to her target.
It’s as important to have a regular sleep routine as it is to get the hours at rest. This is due to something called circadian rhythm, which is your 24-hour body clock. Interestingly, this will change slightly as you get older, which is why teenagers like to stay up late and an older person may do better with an earlier bedtime. Going to bed and waking up at the same time every day will make the hours that you sleep more productive and will help you establish a sleep routine. Keeping all electronic devices, including mobile phones, out of your bedroom is good sleep hygiene. The blue light that phones and tablets emit inhibit the sleep hormone melatonin, and this can cause insomnia. Too hot? Overheating in bed can disturb your sleep. The ideal temperature for a bedroom is between 16 and 18°C. When your body is cool and rested, it triggers the production of melatonin, the sleep hormone. Chronic stress (stress that is ongoing and long-term) has been linked to many health conditions, including sleep problems. As far as sleep-supportive nutrients are concerned, B vitamins and magnesium can help to support the nervous system during stressful periods. A natural sleep remedy can also help. Dormeasan® Sleep is a fresh herb tincture made of Valerian and Hops. It is non-addictive and fast-acting, and is not known to cause drowsiness. For further advice, visit Gary and his team at Healthy Route, 18 Silver Street, Leicester or call 0116 253 9097.

Kirsty lost 1 1/2 stone in 20 weeks to become a target member on June 2020. Local members and friends Amy Jarvis and Kirsty Varnham have done a brilliant job and between them have lost 4 1/2 stone. Both busy ladies they have changed their lives with their weight loss and both say that not only do they feel and look better but they have more energy and enjoy taking part in Body Magic (Slimming Worlds incentive program to get fit and Active). We don't know when we will be back in our physical venues but until then look forward to welcoming and supporting new members who want to make a difference to themselves and the community. Anstey Parish Council Article by Liz Hawkes
Local Council Award Scheme Anstey Parish Council has been received the highest award possible as part of the Local Council Award Scheme. This achievement recognises that the council achieves good practice in governance, community engagement and council improvement. This award recognises that Anstey PC goes above and beyond their legal obligations, leading their communities and continuously seeking opportunities to improve and develop even further. The Award Scheme report highlighted the council’s particular areas of strength, including its ability to bring forward improvements for residents through projects. The Local Council Award Scheme is a peer assessed programme that has been designed to both provide the tools and encouragement to those councils at the beginning of their improvement journeys, as well as promoting and recognising councils that are at the cutting edge of the sector. Councillor Glyn McAllister Chairman of the Council is pleased with the award and stated ‘The award is once again a reflection on the work that Councillors and staff do throughout the year to help our community and is justly deserved’

Commenting on the news, GCR’s Managing Director, Michael Gough said; “I am so very proud that Nicky has accepted this position – she will bring an entire new level of advice and gravitas to our corporate governance. As the Railway grows in popularity and strength, it will be so useful to have her massive experience and knowledge to hand” Nicky said “I am very excited to be joining the GCR Board. The GCR has a very special place in the hearts of Leicestershire residents and beyond. I’ve worked with and enjoyed the Railway as their MP, as the founding Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Heritage Rail and also as an enthusiastic GCR local member for over 15 years now. I look forward to supporting the Railway’s exciting future and working with all GCR employees and volunteers.”
The Charnwood Gardener Article by Peter Flood
Why do we garden? I read a quote recently by the author Margaret Atwood (of The Handmaid’s Tale fame). It was this: ‘Gardening is not a rational act.’ The quote, simple as it is, struck me quite deeply. Why do we garden? Why do we devote precious hours to a task that will never be completed? Why do we spend hard-earned money to produce ephemeral moments of colour and form that, if we’re entirely honest, mean very little to anyone but us? The whole thing is frankly absurd. Then I thought back to when the gardening bug bit me for the first time. I finally had a tiny patch of ground, mine to do as I pleased with. The possibilities stretched before me. Almost overnight, gardening transformed from just another chore into an activity of infinite potential. I was overcome with a frenzy of seed-sowing, deadheading, weed-identifying, pond-digging, deep-mulching, tool-buying, design-sketching, GQT-listening and composting that has never left me. Eventually I made it the focus of my life and switched careers to pursue horticulture full-time. That was definitely not a rational act, as my bank balance will attest. But there is something about gardening that enraptures the soul. It might be the creativity it allows. It might be the connection to nature it ensures; the way it engages both body and mind. Most likely, it’s all of the above. One thing is certain – life is irrational, and gardening brings us closer to what life is really about than almost anything else. JULY TIP: Pots and planters dry out quickly in hot weather. A glass bottle filled with water and pushed down into the soil (neck first) will give the pot a reservoir of water to draw on, and save you the task of watering every day.

You Can Help Beat Cancer By Supporting The Hope For Life Appeal Article by Alex Peters
Hope Against Cancer is doubling the size of their Clinical Trials Facility at Leicester’s Royal Infirmary - and are calling upon the people of Leicestershire and Rutland to help them do it. Funding research is the only way to beat cancer, and Hope is at the forefront of giving people a better quality of life and a vastly higher chance of surviving the disease. The Hope for Life Appeal is well underway and is your chance to be part of a local movement against cancer - if you don’t want to miss out, you need to get involved. The Hope For Life Appeal is aiming to raise over £1.5 million to totally redevelop and extend the Hope Clinical Trials Facility. Every year, around 5,000 people are diagnosed with cancer in Leicestershire. Thanks to organisations like Hope, of this 5,000, more people than ever are surviving. Hope For Life is the next step in making sure the number of people surviving cancer continues to rise.
A ‘New Normal’ At Rothley Park Golf Club
Hope Against Cancer would like to thank a number of very generous donors across the Leicestershire and Rutland community, which has already raised an impressive £1 million towards the £1.5 million goal. The Charity reached the million-pound mark recently with help from The Randal Charitable Foundation, following a generous donation of £101,000. The Loughborough-based Foundation has a clear, unwavering vision that is to save lives, help the socially disadvantaged and improve the quality of life for those in need in the UK and around the world.
Article by Lou Preedy
Opened in 2012, the Hope Clinical Trials Facility is one of the country’s leading centres for cancer trials in the last few years.
Members of Rothley Park Golf Club are delighted to be back on the course, now following strict social distancing and safe practice rules put in place by the club.
Despite the current challenges we are all facing due to COVID-19, the charity is making great headway with Phase 1, which is happening over at the University of Leicester’s Robert Kilpatrick Clinical Sciences Building, located at the Leicester Royal Infirmary. It is here that much of the life-saving research takes place.
Club Manager, Danny Spillane, says it has been fantastic to welcome members back to the Club. “The Governing Bodies of Golf have given very clear guidelines to clubs to ensure that everyone can "Play safe, Stay safe". We have had to adapt to the 'new normal', with booked tee times, leaving the flag in at all times and lots of other little changes to ensure everyone stays as safe as they can. The staff have done a tremendous job in keeping the course beautifully maintained and the members have adapted quickly to the new regulations."
The objective for this space is to increase its capacity and to bring it to an excellent standard and an environment conducive to the researchers and the work which takes place here. All main construction for phase 1 has now been completed. Phase 2 will happen at the Clinical Trials Facility and the charity and partners are being guided by the government as to when they can commence.
Members are requested to stay in their cars until ten minute before their booked tee time, are only allowed to the tee off area when instructed by the club’s professional team and must practice social distancing at all times. Bunkers have no rakes, you are not allowed to touch the flags and you are encouraged to putt one at a time until your ball is holed.
Research has shown that having clinical research in a hospital providing cancer treatment improves the overall standard of care for patients receiving treatment both in and out of clinical trials. This means a new facility could have a wider impact on all patients being treated for cancer across the system.
Initially players were only allowed to play in twos, but this restriction has now been modified to allow teams of up to four to play, still following all the social distancing rules and competitions have been gradually introduced.
Hope is calling on people to start fundraising and help them achieve their fundraising target. In the past, local people have organised events, sporting challenges, competitions, bake sales, bike rides and a host of other activities to generate cash for the charity’s life-saving work. It is of course a challenging time but the charity has been truly impressed at the innovative way in which their supporters have continued to fundraise.
The clubhouse is closed for the time being so players must leave the course after their round is finished and head straight back to their cars. A one-way system is in place from the car park to the 1st tee and back to the car park from the 18th tee. The system is working really well and members are so pleased to be back on the course. Club Member, Nathan Booth, says: “It is brilliant to be playing golf again. We have all said how safe we feel with the England Golf rules in place and although we’d love to be finishing at the 19th Hole, i.e. the Clubhouse, but it’s fantastic that the course is open again. The green staff and management team had done a terrific job keeping the course in tip-top condition whilst it was temporarily closed. Well done to everyone.”

The money raised by Hope’s supporters will not only go towards doubling the capacity of the Clinical Trials Facility but to purchasing new equipment and will be transformational for local cancer research in the future. Historically, local citizens have always risen to the challenge to ensure Hope Against Cancer delivers its vital research. If you’ve been moved by the charity’s ambition and need to get this done for local cancer patients, you can add your fundraising power to the Hope For Life Appeal by visiting Hope’s social media pages here: Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn or donate through the Hope for Life Appeal website: https://hopeforlife.charity
