Charity Coffee Mornings At Charles Booth Centre
Comedians Zoe Lyons, Tom Binns and Lloyd Griffith will headline The Big Weekend in the National Forest shows next year. The popular acts will be coming to North West Leicestershire between 5 and 9 February as part of a satellite event of the hugely successful Leicester Comedy Festival. North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC) has worked with the festival organiser to bring events into the National Forest area during the first weekend of the festival, resulting in a feast of comedy entertainment for all ages. Venues such as Conkers, Coalville’s Century Theatre and the Lyric Rooms in Ashby are also on board along with other smaller venues such as Coalville’s Elite Gaming Lounge and local libraries to ensure a real variety of performances.
In the summer of 2019, Charles Booth Centre took the decision to start at monthly coffee morning to raise money for local and national charities. These coffee mornings have covered a wide range of charities, culminating in the raising of £140 on 13 December for Triangle, a Leicester homeless charity run from Holy Trinity Church in the city. A spokesperson for the centre said ‘Over the 6 months that the centre has been doing these charity coffee mornings, a total of £730.87 has been raised for a wide range of charities, in addition to which several lorry loads of goodies from sleeping bags down to toothpaste have been given to the centre to pass on to the Triangle charity. We are very grateful for the response to these events, and intend to continue them in 2020 starting on 13 January when we will be raising money for Thringstone Primary School’s PTA, then on Valentine’s day, the funds will be given to Thringstone Methodist Chapel. If there are any local charities that would like us to include them in our fund raising coffee mornings, they should contact the office, Monday-Friday between 9am and 12 noon on 01530 222337 or email hello@charlesboothcentre.org.uk and put their names forward’
Highlights include: Tom Binns, creator and star of BBC One’s Hospital People and a favourite on 8 out of 10 Cats Does Countdown, will be at the Lyric Rooms, Ashby on Wednesday 5 February. Zoe Lyons, who has appeared on countless TV shows including BBC’s Live at the Apollo and Mock The Week, will also appear at the Lyric Rooms the following day, Thursday 6 February. A Night with Lee Lard – a Peter Kay tribute act – will be at Conkers on Friday 7 February Funny Folk Tales and Silly Stories for children from Tom the Tale Teller at Coalville Library on Saturday 8 February Former Sky Sports presenter Lloyd Griffith and outstanding Irish funnyman Michael Legge head the billing at The Century Theatre Coalville on Saturday 8 February An interactive comedy quiz for all the family at the Elite Gaming Lounge, Coalville, on Sunday 9 February. There’s lots more happening for children too with the National Forest’s Funniest Kids and a Kids Comedy club both taking place on Saturday 8 February at The Century Theatre and Conkers respectively. Most people hope that their estate will pass on to their children and grandchildren eventually. But this will not happen for many, unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay for care home fees. The solution to help protect your estate is a Will incorporating a Property Protection Trust (PPT). A testamentary PPT can only be executed whilst both partners remain alive. Upon death of the first partner, their Will specifies that their share of the property is placed into trust and names the ultimate beneficiary of this share, normally the children and grandchildren of the deceased. The surviving partner, under the terms of the Trust, has the unequivocal right to remain living in the property for the rest of their life. On the death of the second partner the Trust comes to an end and the property passes to the beneficiaries. As the surviving partner does not own the deceased's share of the property it is fully protected for the beneficiaries, so if the surviving partner requires care, or even remarries, this share of the children's inheritance is protected. This last point can be of particular interest to couples who have come together and have children from different partners. A PPT can help each person in a relationship ensure that their children inherit their share of the property, while giving their surviving partner the ability to live in the property for the rest of their life. If the surviving partner wants to move to another property they can still sell the property and the proceeds be used to purchase a new property; the terms of the Trust remain over the new property. Kornerstone Wealth Protection and Legal services will assess your current circumstances and arrange the trust that will provide the best protection for you, your family and your assets.
If you are OVER 60 it £75 will only COST YOU £75* to make or update your Will.

New Early Spring Plant Hunters’ Fair
Whitwick & District U3A
Article by Janet
Article by Sue Calcutt
As we begin a new year and a new decade, Whitwick and District U3A sends good wishes to all retired and semi-retired people in our locality. U3A members and visitors are invited to attend the first monthly General Meeting of 2020 on Friday 17th January. Details of all the varied Interest Groups, where we learn from each other and from direct experience, will be available at the General Meeting. Our guest speaker will be local poet Delia Bennett who will be reading some of the poems she has written over several years. Delia calls her presentation “Reflections in Rhyme” as her poems are both amusing and somewhat poignant. Her wish is to evoke a little nostalgia whilst entertaining us. To hear Delia’s poems and discover more about Whitwick and District U3A, come along to St. David’s Church Hall, Broom Leys, Coalville LE67 4 RL. Please arrive at 1.45 for a 2.00pm start. As the U3A movement is non-religious and non-political, everyone is welcome. Group Leaders and others will be there to pass on information about the benefits of U3A membership and how to make retirement even more enjoyable. Alternatively, comprehensive details about Whitwick and District U3A can be easily found at www. whitwicku3a.org.uk
Newmarket Transformation To Start In The New Year Article by NW Leicestershire District Council
Work on Coalville’s new indoor market has now started. Planning permission for Newmarket, which will be created within a former pub on Marlborough Square in the town, was granted in December. The work will take around three months and will transform the building into a modern space with food stalls and an eating area, as well as traditional market stalls, pop-up traders and space for events. Newmarket is expected to open in spring 2020, with applications now open for new traders to take stalls. North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC), which owns the current indoor market and is carrying out the transformation work, is looking to attract a range of food and non-food businesses on a range of lease options.
Parking And Traffic Changes In Marlborough Square
Article by NW Leicestershire District Council During the work the parking in Marlborough Square will be removed to allow space for the work compound and a temporary taxi rank. The 24 free parking spaces within the square have already been moved to nearby James Street and Margaret Street car parks. Traffic on the south side of the square will be restricted to taxis while the work is ongoing. Bus stops on the north side of the square will operate as normal. Councillor Andrew Woodman, Portfolio Holder for Community Services at NWLDC, said: “We’re very excited to see work starting to create Newmarket and bring Coalville’s market into the heart of the town. This is part of our regeneration work for Coalville – moving the market and creating a modern, vibrant space that will be exciting for shoppers and traders alike. We appreciate that there will be some disruption while the work is ongoing and we thank people for their patience during this time.” Anyone who would like to apply for a stall at Newmarket can contact markets@nwleicestershire.gov.uk or call 01530 454598 for more information. The current indoor market will stay open until the new one is ready to receive customers. Its trading days are Tuesday 8am to 2pm, and Friday and Saturday 8am to 4pm.

Free Support To Help You Achieve Your New Year Targets Article by Frankie Lee
Too Cold For Comfort? Article by Gary Trickett
Whether you suffer with Raynaud’s or simply ‘feel the cold’, a few simple lifestyle changes can really help to improve your circulation. If you’re a smoker, stop. Stopping smoking is the single most effective way to reduce the symptoms of poor circulation and one of the healthiest decisions you’ll ever make. Keep warm and stay away from the cold, including draughts while you’re indoors. Thermals and gloves should be a wardrobe staple. Regular exercise will also help to boost circulation. Try to exercise three times a week for at least 20 minutes to get the heart racing and the blood flowing around your body. Correct nutrition is also important. Reduce your consumption of circulationslowing saturated fats and cholesterol, and increase your intake of oily fish or plant oils to help reduce blood stickiness. Salt hardens your arteries (which need to be elastic) so make sure you stay within the recommended 6g a day and watch your labels when buying pre-packaged and tinned foods as these often have a high salt content. Foods rich in vitamin C (kiwis, blueberries, cherries and most fruit and veg) are good for your circulation, as are foods rich in rutin (buckwheat, citrus peel and rosehips), which helps to strengthen small blood vessels. As far as herbal remedies are concerned, Ginkgo biloba is a firm favourite. It is recognised for its beneficial action on arterial circulation and is thought to work by relaxing the smallest arteries to allow blood flow to penetrate the extremities, helping to keep fingers and toes nice and warm. Try diluting 15 drops of Ginkgo biloba in a little water three times a day, but do bear in mind it may not be compatible with certain prescription drugs. For further advice, visit Gary and his team at Healthy Route, 18 Silver Street, Leicester.
Robins & Rainbows Update Article by Tracey Brooke
The last few weeks of 2019 were very busy for the Robins & Rainbows team in their final efforts to reach their goal of raising £3500 for Together Against Cancer in memory of Kim Pye. The highlight being a very successful and fabulous Fashion Show held at The Royal Oak in Kirby Muxloe. It was so well attended with over 100 lovely ladies coming together to see a fantastic show case of beautiful clothing and accessories presented by DC Boutique, a gorgeous boutique in Kirby Muxloe. We had such a fun night with some of us hitting the catwalk for the first time ever (and quite possibly the last!) We had a mega raffle and mini auction which was made possible by the generous donations received from friends and local/national businesses. The night raised a massive £1302 which took us over our total target of £3500. Thank you so much to everyone who attended and helped make it such a great night! The Fashion Show was very quickly followed by the team completing the Rutland Water 10k Night Run on a cold but clear night with beautiful lighting to guide the way. Normanton Church lit up provided a wonderous sight to keep us going. And lastly, Sunday 1st December saw us all come together for a Santa Walk & Fundraising Finale. The walk took place at the beautiful Market Bosworth Country Park and was hosted by Market Bosworth Rotary Club. There were Santas everywhere on this beautiful sunny morning! What a great start to the festive season and fantastic end to an incredible year of fundraising. ****OUR FINAL TOTAL STANDS AT A WHOPPING £4120!! **** We have been completely overwhelmed by everyone’s generosity and support and would like to say a huge thank you to every single one of you for supporting our events and challenges. This money means so much to Together Against Cancer who do not receive any government or statutory funding and rely on public donations to continue their important work in supporting cancer patients, their carers and the wider community. More information about Together Against Cancer and their Education and Wellness Centre in Thurmaston can be found at www. togetheragainstcancer.org.uk 2019 was a truly amazing year raising money in memory an amazing and inspirational lady. Wishing you all a very Happy New Year from the Robins & Rainbows.

Have you broken your New Year’s resolution yet? Did you promised to take more exercise? To leave the car at home? Perhaps you were you hoping to shed a few of those Christmas pounds and save the planet at the same time. It isn’t easy is it? Take More Exercise, Why Don’t You? Leicestershire County Council’s Director of Public Health doesn’t think it is easy either. That is why his latest Annual Report has focused on what he calls ‘a whole system approach to improving levels of physical activity’. Nagging people to take more exercise simply doesn’t work. Getting to work on foot or by bike when the A511 is congested with cars is no fun. As for catching a bus? It takes two hours to get from Coalville to Ashby in time to start a 6 o’clock shift. A whole system approach doesn’t lay the blame for inactivity on the individual. It looks at the whole environment. It wants to understand the choices people and families actually have when it comes to travelling to work and schools and what chances they really have to enjoy exercise near their homes. Some medics see physical activity as the one cureall for all ills. They are probably right, but personal ‘choice’ without real opportunity is no choice at all. Telling people to exercise when their circumstances are difficult just makes people feel guilty and get depressed. It’s Time We Made Exercise Easier According to the Director of Public Health, physical inactivity directly contributes to one in six deaths in the UK. That is the same number as smoking. Around a quarter of us don’t even manage the bare minimum 30 minutes of activity a week. How has that come about? There are fewer manual jobs. We have machines at home to do the heavy work. Too many employers expect their staff to sit still all day. North West Leicestershire District Council planners are allowing developers to build homes in one part of the district and employment spaces in another. With poor cycleways and unreliable buses, people end up relying on their car to get to work. We need to build physical activity back into the environment. We need to re-engineer physical activity back into our lives. We need to make physical activity an easier choice for travel and leisure so it can become something that all families can achieve. The Director of Public health wants to work more closely with local planning authorities. He believes that new developments should be designed so that it is easier to cycle and walk than to take the car. He wants to see more free and lowcost family friendly physical activities in the community using outdoor gyms, parks, gardens, tree-lined streets, communal squares, allotments and other green spaces. Get Real Can’t You! Of course, these are the right ambitions. The first plans for the SE Coalville development included cycleways and a railway station. With 2020 vision, it appears that none of these promises have been kept. I have pointed this out to November’s Environment and Transport Committee. They sent me some warm words, but the reality is that County Highways can only advise. While developers and governments care more about private profit than public health, nothing will change. What can we do in the meantime? Hugglescote Parish has already lost much of its green space, but Councillors are trying to save what they can by creating a Neighbourhood Plan. At District level, Councillors need to insist that active design principles are embedded in their revised Local Plan. We need to make it clear to decision makers that things have to change. Healthy principles must be at the heart of planning decisions across North West Leicestershire.

Good News For Coalville - Wyatt Secures £15,000 From Bardon Aggregate To Help Deliver Coalville In Bloom. Last year I put forward Coalville in Bloom which would see hanging baskets and more planters installed in the town. At a recent meeting of the Bardon Aggregate community fund members agreed to support the project with a grant of a whopping £15,000 which is a fantastic contribution to help deliver Coalville in Bloom in 2020. Once again we have proven that we can make a real difference. I really want to see my town become a more greener and cleaner place which everyone can enjoy. This is the first step of many to help improve our town. Hopefully with a little help from local businesses we can increase the footfall within our town, which is so desperately needed, and make our town a place people want to visit. I will be looking at further ways and ideas to gain external funding so the project can be continued over many years to come. Other potential projects we will be looking at in the future is a green wall on various buildings in the town so again we can make our town a much more pleasant place to shop and enjoy.
Thinking of moving? Wyatt Urges Council To Purchase Building Up For Sale In Marlborough Square. I have asked the council to consider purchasing several buildings which are up for sale for £1.2 million in the Marlborough square area. Purchasing these units will add to the already planned regeneration of the area. Investing in property such as this will give confidence to other businesses that the council are serious in helping to regenerate our town. Luckily theres a number of tenants already occupying several units so there is already an income stream which the council can use to repay any taxpayers money being used to purchase the properties in question. Marlborough square development must be done as a whole otherwise the regeneration plans on the new market area will not succeed. Hopefully the council will agree with me that purchasing these units make financial sense.
