BIRSTALL FLOWER CLUB Finals Day at St On 27th November at 7.15pm, we have our “CHRISTMAS OPEN EVENING” in Birstall Village Hall. We have NAFAS demonstrators Kate Russell & Patti Dawson coming to present “Christmas is coming, here we come again”. These two ladies have been to our Club before and we welcome their return. We have seen them in many roles; medieval maids, 18th century country house guests, and who can forget Kate as a Christmas turkey?

Margaret's Bowls Club September is the final month of the outdoor season and this year was marked by a long run of fine sunny weather giving plenty of opportunity for playing the later rounds of any remaining club competitions. Club Finals day was held on 15th of the month which was dry, bright but slightly overcast, recognised to be the perfect weather for bowls. The green was living up to its reputation as one of the best playing surfaces in the county.

You will be sure of a most entertaining and hilarious evening as well as beautiful flowers for lucky people to win and take home. This wonderful evening is open to the public. Tickets are available from Sylvia (0116 2674206) or Mary (07704398017) - £10

On Wednesday 4th December we will be running our every popular Christmas door wreath making workshop. This is held in Birstall Village Hall – 2 sessions (2.30pm and 7pm). The cost of £20 includes all you will need to take home your personalised door wreath. Contact mary.linnett@gmail.com

Put your garden netting away and save wildlife DON’T LEAVE netting out in your garden over the winter – it is killing our hedgehogs. So warns the RSPCA, after reports of dozens of hedgehogs getting entangled in football, badminton and pond nets. Evie Button, a wildlife scientific officer, warns: “Netting can be a particular hazard for wild animals, as they can easily become entangled. As they thrash around trying to escape, the netting can tighten round them and cause terrible suffering.” Since the 1950s, the number of hedgehogs in England has shrunk from 30 million to one million.

Steve Goodger

Several finals were played on the day but the one that really got people talking was the Ladies Maiden Singles between Mary Linnett and Rachel Smith. Both ladies have a good measure of natural ability but it was Rachel who gained the early advantage, at one point establishing a clear lead of 15-7. Mary managed to claw things back to within one point at 20-19. I should explain that in singles the winner is the first to reach 21 so things were very much in the balance. It was Mary who broke through, scoring 2 on the final end. The match was played throughout in a friendly but competitive spirit, with all the ingredients of a great game of bowls, including the knife edged finish! A memorable match, on a memorable day.

Lottery celebrates fantastic first year

25th Annual

Art Ar rtt E Exxhibit xhhiibbitititi itiooonn BIRST TA ALL VILLAGE HALL Saturday 2nd & Sunday 3rd November 2019

Good causes in Charnwood have come together to celebrate the Charnwood Community Lottery’s first birthday. Charnwood Borough Council held the celebration event at Fearon Hall, one of the 50 organisations registered for the lottery.

9.30am to 4.00pm

Since launching last year lottery players have raised over £22,000 for a variety of good causes including village halls, community libraries, swimming clubs, play groups, scout groups, and various charities. Over 37,000 tickets have been sold in the first year, 92 players have won cash prizes and 730 people have won 3 free tickets. Cllr Deborah Taylor, lead member for communities said: “I’d like to thank everyone who has brought tickets and supported good causes through the lottery over the past 12 months. “The lottery was launched to help raise money for good causes in the borough which is exactly what it’s done. “We’ve also had a number of players who have won a variety of cash prizes over the past year, so I’d like to congratulate them and thank everyone who has supported the lottery. I’m looking forward to seeing more groups and organisations signing up to the lottery and more money being raised over the next year.”

SUPPORTING LOROS

For every £1 ticket purchased, 60p goes towards helping good causes in the borough. When a player chooses to support one of the registered good causes, the organisation will receive a 50p donation, with 10p going towards a central community fund. If no charity is chosen, all 60 pence goes to the community fund. The council will use the community fund to continue to support local projects and good causes through its grants scheme. The top prize in the Charnwood Community Lottery is £25,000. Among the many groups to have benefitted from the lottery is the Quorn Local History Group which has received over £450. Dennis Merchant from the group said: “We’d like to thank every player which chooses to support the history group with their lottery ticket. “The lottery is great for those groups which may just a little additional funding and I’d encourage any other community groups in Charnwood to looking at registering as a good cause. “The money raised through the lottery has been put towards the general running costs of the group and has also helped us to fund equipment such as a projector.” To play the Charnwood Community Lottery or to find out more about being one of the good causes, please visit www.charnwoodlottery.co.uk

Our hospitals are full of lonely people TWO IN five hospital patients never have any visitors, according to a recent survey. And a recent poll of 200 hospital nurses by the Royal Voluntary Service found that many nurses believe that the lack of social contact hampered patient recovery. People with no visitors are less likely to be stimulated by conversation, or move away from their beds, or even to follow the medical advice given to them. As one doctor explained: “Human contact is a crucial part of recovery and that’s why we’re so passionate about ensuring everyone has the option of being supported by volunteers.” The Royal Voluntary Service runs several hospital services, including assistance with meals, patient transport, trolley services and volunteer-run cafes and shops. More details at: https://www.royalvoluntaryservice.org.uk/

ST. JAMES MONDAY GROUP Although it rained (and rained) on our first fund-raising coffee morning, £200.00 was raised for Glebe House, Loughborough, our charity for this year. Another of our members is hosting a further fund-raising event in their home in the near further; hopefully free from the rain! And (surely) as successful. We always seem to be fortunate on our 'away-days' though, as our trip to Lincoln was blessed with lovely weather and we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, with many thanks to the organisers of this day out. Medals must be given out to the members who came to our October meeting, battling through the relentless rain which made the roads into rivers. Talk about intrepid! They were rewarded by a most entertaining talk on the 'Story of the music hall' by Felicity Austin, who, with good use of hats, shawls and skirts, and with full audience participation, led us through this most vibrant episode of our history in the singing of the well-known songs of the Edwardian music hall. In November our speaker will be Jo Golby and 'The Laura Ashley Story', so if you enjoy fashion and design, this will be very interesting. We meet, as usual, in the Day Centre rooms of the Village Hall, School Lane, on the 2nd Monday of every month, at 7.30 p.m.

The Charnwood Gardener

Shrubs You Shouldn’t Snub

What’s your favourite plant? I bet your answer falls within two categories. It’s either an annual - those lovely little plants that give their all for one season before popping their clogs – or, it’s a herbaceous perennial – those spreading Choisya x dewitteana 'Aztec Pearl clumps that appear from nowhere each year to give a tremendous display before retreating into the soil once more. There’s enough between the two to utterly mesmerise, and it’s no wonder that many gardeners find time for little else. But what about shrubs? They might quietly get on with it whilst the rest of the garden demands your attention, but if you want a beautiful garden then ignore them at your peril. Shrubs are the back row of the gardener’s chess board, giving structure and strength whilst those tender-stemmed pawns play their silly, short-lived games. Come winter they add height and interest when everything else has been seen off. They can be among the most beautiful plants in the garden, with an almost infinite array of flower and foliage forms. There’s just so much more to them than the tightly-clipped, generic blobs you see lining supermarket car parks. Here’s some unique cultivars of lovely (but often overlooked) shrubs that will bring year-long interest to your garden: • Berberis ‘Pink Queen’ - A spikey brute, it’s true, but add this to a lesstravelled area for a splash of subdued pink. • Choisya ‘Aztec Pearl’ - An unassuming plant. Until it flowers, that is. Beautiful, heavenly-scented flowers everywhere! • Euonymus ‘President Gauthier’ - A striking variegated shrub. Vivid, lush foliage year-round and so easy to grow. • Ceonothus thyrsiflorus var. repens - A little ground-cover Californian Lilac that can brush off colder winters. A haze of blue in May. NOVEMBER TIP: They even sell spring bulbs in petrol stations these days, so you’ve no excuse to forget to get some to plant now. But do think about expanding beyond just daffodils. Snakes Head Fritillary, Lilly of the Valley, Puschkinia – there’s plenty more to consider!

News from the Churches The BIG news from St. James and Our Lady and St. Nicholas, Wanlip, is that we are about to lose our Rector! Not literally, of course, but he is moving on in the Diocese, and in his work, becoming a 'Diocesan Transition Enabler' a new role created by Bishop Martyn Snow and involving short secondments to other parishes within the Diocese. After 9 years in Birstall and Wanlip, this new role will present many challenges both for him and his wife, Sheryl, and for us as a congregation as we await the appointment of a new Rector. Vince's last Sunday with us will be the services on Advent Sunday (1st December). After all these years in Birstall and Wanlip he will be very much missed, but all of our good wishes will go with him and Sheryl in their new venture. Sheryl is continuing as Parish Administrator, though, so will be just as busy as she is now. Our Sunday School has just celebrated its 9th birthday (with a cake, of course) and shared by us all. Shared by many more in our wider community will be the donations of food given at the Harvest 'All Together' service, and much of which will go to the food bank in St. Theresa's Church Hall. Canon Anne Horton now has 90 photographs for the Church album. This will really be an interesting collection for both the church and the village. Anne is also leading a winetasting evening on 15th November in Wanlip Church Hall, to raise funds for the church. She has called it 'Around the World in 7 1/2 grapes' which is rather intriguing! There is a lunch in aid of 'Save the Children' at the White Horse in Birstall on Wednesday 6th November. Details can be found on ajbsavethechildren@gmail.com. The Mother's Union coffee morning in the Methodist coffee shop resulted in the grand sum of £295.25 which will be used in the work of the Mother's Union and other projects. As Christmas is within touching distance, the St. Nicholas Fayre at Wanlip will take place on Saturday 7th December from 2.00 p.m. to 4.00 p.m., so it is a definite date for your diary. The Community Hall and the Church will be in use for this event. Another date to look forward to is St. James Film Night. We will be showing 'Fisherman's Friend' on a Friday evening in January. As always, the entrance is free and there will be light refreshments, and donations will be welcome. Skipping madly ahead of ourselves, to 28th February 2020, we will be having a travel talk by Sue Ablett, well travelled and always interesting. This is another date for your diary, to look forward to, and details of both the film night and the travel talk will be published nearer the date.

Birstall Methodist Monday Women’s Group present two cheques! Birstall Methodist Monday Women’s Group chose to raise funds for two local projects during 2018/2019. It was decided that the money raised would be divided equally between The Day Centre which is held at the Village Hall, and Birstall Food Hub. Our Women’s Group put a lot of time and effort into our chosen Projects: we had a Saturday Coffee Morning, various Garden Parties, an evening of viewing the Christmas lights in a member’s garden, a Thrift Stall and Cake Stalls plus many other fundraising ideas. So we were delighted to present two cheques of £900 each to Gill Chester and Peter Molesdale from Birstall Food Hub and Olwyn Guildford from St James’ Day Centre. Olywyn said that St James’ Day Centre is a lifeline for many Birstall residents and the money raised will be used to fund a gardening project, entertainment and various activities which can be enjoyed by people who may spend hours at home feeling lonely. Birstall Food Hub will also use their donation wisely. Gill explained that on top of the generous donations of food in the Co-op trolley, it costs approximately £10 - £20 per week to buy fresh food such as bread, eggs and milk. They also need money for publicity etc. Both recipients of the cheques expressed their gratitude. Our Monday Group now has a new Project - Take Heart at Glenfield Hospital. We look forward to working together to fund-raise for another local project and we would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support. We meet every Monday evening 7.30pm at Birstall Methodist Coffee Shop; so don’t sit at home feeling lonely, why not come and join us! Thank you

It is full of the usual characters, the goodies and the baddies; I wonder if you can recognise who belongs to each group. I suppose Baroness Hardupp (Cinderella’s step-mother), could be one of the goodies, after all she married Cinderella’s father, gave them a home and access to money. That all sounds very noble of her, however, is she all sweetness and light, or is there another side to her? And what about Cinderella, she finds herself with a step-mother and 2 step-sisters, Asphyxia and Euthanasia. That could be a wonderful experience for her, to be part of a big family, enjoy special times together and have girly nights with her new sisters. Hmmmm, that sounds a bit too good to be true. Is that how you remember the story? The 2 ugly (very ugly) sisters are arguing and fighting over any man they set eyes on, they don’t seem to realise that the men are horrified at being pursued by them. Poor old Buttons, he is besotted by Cinderella, he would do anything for her, but it is not to be, her heart lies with another. The Prince is swept of his feet by Cinderella’s beauty and endeavours to track her down and ask for her hand in marriage. Cinderella is a kind young woman, who opens her heart to her new family and forgives them for all of their nastiness towards her. So, be prepared for lots of hilariously funny moments and some tender romantic gestures from the Prince. Join in with the boo’s, hisses and laughter, and look out for the gentle, kind fairy godmother and the comedy duo who are sure to liven things up. Are you getting in the mood? Want to hear some more. then make sure you book your tickets and come and see our fine cast, in their fine costumes, at our fabulous venue, Birstall Social Club. Dates: Thursday November 28th 2019 and Friday November 29th 2019 at 7.15 p.m. Saturday November 30th 2019 at 2.00 p.m. and 7.00 p.m. Doors open 30 minutes before each performance Venue: Birstall Social Club, 16-18 Wanlip Lane, Birstall LE4 4JS Tickets: £7.00, £6.00 concession, £23 family ticket. Surprise Birthday Gift from Birstall Parish Council Mrs May Goodwin has provided her skilled calligraphy service, free of charge, to Birstall Parish Council since 1984 by recording memoriam messages and species of trees planted in Greengate Lane Cemetery. The Chair of Birstall Parish Council, Councillor Ann Marshall, was made aware that May has recently celebrated her 95th Birthday and of her care and generosity in recording the messages in the Tree Memorial Book for the last 35 years and wished to thank her, an sample of her work can be seen below. May’s friends at the Indoor Bowls club informed the office staff that May had fallen in love with a picture that was displayed in the village hall. The artist, Mr Mick Joyce was contacted and he agreed to sell his picture to the Chair, who then took the opportunity to present it to May as a special birthday gift and to thank her for the long and unique service that she has so generously provided to Birstall Parish Council. May was overwhelmed with the surprise presentation and was delighted to receive the picture that she had long admired.

Happy Birthday May and thank you, From Birstall Parish Council.

Friends of the Charnwood Forest The first meeting of the Friends this season took place on Thursday 26th September at the Woodhouse Eaves village hall, where we were to have heard a talk on ‘Visitors to Charnwood forest’ by David Robinson. Unfortunately this talk had to be postponed for medical reasons, so Marilyn Palmer gave a talk on ‘The Making of the Industrial Landscape in Leicestershire’. ‘Landscape’ is perhaps best connected with Leicestershire through the work of W G Hoskins, late professor of local history at Leicester University. What people may not realise is that he came to dislike Leicestershire, and particularly its industrial landscape, and he retreated to Devon as soon as he was able. So what were the industries that contributed to this landscape? The talk covered the rise, and in some cases the fall, of these industries, from knitting and the boot and shoe industry to iron founding and engineering, and the bricks which made St Pancras station. Weaving was, of course, a very ancient occupation. At first sheep were shorn, the wool either combed or carded, then spun and knitted, all by hand. The first knitting machines may well have orginated in Nottinghamshire, and certainly by the mid

18th century the highest concentrations were in the Nottingham, Leicester and Derby shires. These evolved into power-driven machines which by the 1870’s formed the basis for a factory culture. Here the talk touched on the subject of the role of women in the growth of this industry. Meanwhile boots and shoes were being manufactured chiefly in Northamptonshire, but the industry spread north in the 1860’s, examples being the Wheatsheaf Works and the British United Shoe Machinery Co, both in Leicester city. Charles Bennion, the CEO of British United, was responsible for the presentation of Bradgate Park to the people of Leicester and its shire. Iron works arose at this time; Gimson’s works being a very good example. Its products may still be viewed at the Abbey Pumping station, which originally was designed to pump sewage to Beaumont Leys but is now a museum. To make things involves a source of energy, anything from man or horse power to the introduction of steam, the product of heating water using a coal fire. The next topic in the talk was, logically, about the coal industry. In the north western part of the county the coal measures have a fairly thin overburden and are easily mined. Unfortunately, between

Dr D McNeil

them and their city lies the Charnwood Forest, which makes transport both difficult and expensive. This led on to transport, which is necessary for industrial growth in any case – the bigger the market, the more prosperous the industry. The coming of the canalisation of the river Soar between the Trent and Leicester allowed cheap coal from Derbyshire to flood into Leicester, depriving the Leicestershire coalfield of its market. Its first attempt at retrieving the situation was the Charnwood Forest canal – a disaster in the making. Then came the Leicester and Swannington Railway, well known as the Stephenson line that had to create both the steam whistle and the Glenfield tunnel. The age of steam has come to an end. Factories which once produced enough to give Leicester the title of the richest city in Europe are now blocks of flats, either by conversion or destruction. Smoke no longer hangs over the city. Would Hoskins have approved? We shall never know... The next meeting of the Friends will be at the same venue on 14th October when Martyn Speight will give a talk on ‘The Storey of the Charnwood Water Supply over the last 150 years’.

Good Grief & Climate Cafe Feelgood Farm, Anstey, 25th Oct. The next free monthly cafe event is 2-4pm Friday 25 October.

Birstall Parish Council’s Christmas hamper cheer for senior residents Many years ago, Birstall Parish Council were Trustees of a local charity that has now ceased to exist. The charity was set up to meet the needs of the elderly and needy in the village and when the Charity closed its accounts, the Parish Council decided to continue with this initiative and they honoured the beneficiary list by making sure that they all received the gift of a Christmas Hamper. Over the last few years the beneficiary list has naturally declined, and Parish Councillors decided that this heartwarming initiative should continue. They all agreed that Christmas time is a time for giving and thinking of others and that this gesture captures the very essence of the season, as it spreads joy to some of the most vulnerable people in the Parish.

For bereavement and any other worries, including climate change, future, humanity, etc. It's all connected: Life, change, being human, growth, wellness and community. People and planet. Talk, listen, share feelings, have a cuppa. Smiles and laughter too. Grief and big life changes are normal. It's how we grow stronger and wiser. We're designed to cope and heal, and to help others, in natural ways. Any questions call Alan: 07907 961408 or email: ac@alanchapman.com. Or see FeelgoodFarm.co.uk.

They decided to develop and grow the list up to a maximum of twenty beneficiaries each year and they are asking for your help by seeking nominations from the community to enable them to continue to do this in December 2019. The Parish Council are asking for you to nominate someone who is over 70 years of age that you feel deserves some Christmas Cheer. The nomination form is available to collect from the Parish Council offices or you can download a copy from the Parish Council's website: www.birstallparishcouncil.org.uk Please return your completed nomination forms to the Parish Clerk by post or by hand to the Parish Council Offices on Birstall Road or email: admin@birstallpc.org.uk Receipt will be acknowledged and confirmation given on whether or not your nomination meets the criteria and that it has been included on the Beneficiary List. Nominations will close on 31 October each year to enable the hampers to be ordered and prepared ready for delivery the following December. We look forward to hearing from you
