CONFERENCE “ Young girls and Tennis”
During the last few years, we have noticed a marked fall in feminine participation at our various tournaments. As a result of this, we feel it our duty to react. In collaboration with the Paris League of Tennis, we are thus organizing a conference on young girls and tennis on Saturday 2 July from 10h to 12. The aim of this conference is to draft observations with regard to the following question “ How can one keep young girls in tennis clubs?”

SPORT & ATTITUDE
ECO-FRIENDLY
A UNIQUE CONCEPT : SPORT & ATTITUDE A little history : During the last eleven years, we have tried to endow the Tournament with another dimension, Sport & ATTITUDE. The aim is to associate with sporting ambition, an educational, cultural and social perspective for the physical and moral well-being of the young talented athletes. « Champions in tennis, champions in life»
In 2001 the first “ Citizen action” was inaugurated and developed with the Department of Hauts-deSeine. And in the Tournament village, the stand “ Presence 92” invited the young champions and the public to discover numerous activities linked to civics, the environment and fair-play. Later, the game “ Lets talk straight ! Smash your knowledge” increased youth awareness for the major questions of the present day. This was the beginning of the SPORT&ATTITUDE concept. For over 7 years, the ATTITUDE stand anchored in the heart of the Tournament Village shows this unique character which encourages discovery and dialogue between the cultural diversities represented by more than 50 countries. With the concept “ Sport and Attitude” which patterns the whole tournament it thus challenges the athletes on civic and human values.
EDUCATIONAL WORKSHOPS
Within this space, the players, the coaches and the public find various educational workshops treating the different themes of the Tournament.
THE TOURNAMENT ADOPTS THE GREEN ATTITUDE This year, with the support of the Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development, Transport and Housing, the Tournament wishes to be eco-responsible. Various initiatives shall be taken during the competition month. Transport - The tournament shall offer “clean” transport . - The participants for the prequalification matches shall be invited to arrive by Vélib (city bicycles) or by public transport. Waste - The players shall be invited to use their flask rather than plastic bottles. - For the treatment of waste during the tournament, a selective waste sorting system is operating.

(Charte Eco-citoyenne pour le Développement Durable et Recyclage des Enduits PVC). Awareness campaign - A WWF day shall take place on Wednesday June 29 within the framework of « The International Forest Year « For this, educational workshops shall help increase awareness amongst the participants and the public of the importance and the protection of forests, their fauna, flora and inhabitants. At the end of the afternoon, a cleaning of a plot of land in the Parc de Saint Cloud shall be organized with the youth, parents and coaches. - The spectators , participants and guests of this 22nd edition shall be introduced to eco-gestures (waste reduction, energy economy, respect for the environment, reduction in water consumption, etc). with incentive and informative messages.

HONOURING THE HANDICAPPED ! Handisport or Wheelchair Tennis had always its place in the tournament and especially in 2009 when it celebrated its 20 years with M. Jeremiasz as patron and who will be present to sign his book during the International Week of the BNP Paribas Cup 2011. This year once again, the Stade Français honours Handisport - Wheelchair Tennis in welcoming as its patroness Florence Gravellier. A special wheelchair day will take place on June 26 with the participation of the wheelchair players. But this 22th edition does not end here and also proposes an activity “ red thread” during the fortnight : an “obstacle race”. For this, everyone may test the difficulties which people in wheelchairs experience daily. The Association Perce Neige, founded by the former stadium goer Lino Ventura will also make the visitors and participants aware of mental handicap during the afternoon of July 06.
THE TOURNAMENT VECTOR OF VALUES
«Fête le Mur » The Association “ Fête le mur » which was already present during the 20th edition of the tournament shall celebrate with us the 22nd edition of the Tournament. A group of young umpires chosen by the leader Ali El Karmani (“ Fête le Mur” from Pau) shall supervise, along with the umpires of the Paris Tennis League, the international finals. Operation + 500 Deserving youth In the Parc de St. Cloud, from 4 to 8 July, the tournament will receive every day more than a hundred underprivileged Deserving children. A programme of sporting and educational activities shall be proposed during a half-day programme: Tennis, Basket Ball, Football etc. They may also admire the future tennis champions in action.
A chance for everyone… “ La Passerelle” With the help of Paris City Halls and WASHINGTON DC (USA) The tournaments SPORT & ATTITUDE ( Paris, Washington, Beijing, Athens) also give the opportunity to youth coming from underprivileged backgrounds. Thus every capital of the Tour shall nominate young tennis enthusiasts who are considered deserving to participate and discover another capital. Like last year, young Americans shall experience together the activities of the Parisian final at the Stade Français. Then it is the turn of young Parisians to discover Washington D.C.
THE OPEN SLAMS DOPING
As in former years, the 2011 tournament shall be the occasion to inform and make the youth aware of the dangers and consequences resulting from doping, with regard to the health of the players but also for the values of sport. During a session devoted to anti-doping, specialists from the UNESCO program shall propose that the young athletes reflect on the issues of doping and on fair-play, honesty, dignity, team respect and spirit which are the very essence of sport.

A HISTORICAL ENVIRONMENT THE STADE FRANCAIS The Stade Français today is made up of 12 000 members, 21 sporting divisions and 18 sport schools. It also includes, La Faisanderie comprising of 36 tennis courts including 19 clay courts. 4 training walls, min tennis courts, an open heated swimming pool, football and rugby pitches, multisports stadium, musculation, gymnastics and cardio-training rooms, playground for children, table tennis, bridge salon, changing rooms with saunas and relaxation rooms, a club house including a restaurant, a self-service, a bar, reception and conference rooms.
HISTORIC GROUNDS
The Stade Français is situated since 1898 in the heart of the National Domaine of Saint Cloud. This prestigious site called “ La Faisanderie” entered into the annals of tennis history by welcoming the World Championships on Clay Court in 1912, 1913, 1914, 1920, 1923 then the International Championships of France in 1925 and 1927 .. up to their transfer to the Roland-Garros stadium. However, the STADE, the founding club, for Athletics is housed in Roland –Garros since 1943 in land situated behind the Center Court. Every year since 1990, the Stade Français organizes the Youth Tennis Open in its magnificent setting.
2011, the centenary !
This year is historical as we celebrate the centenary of the “ World Hard Court Tennis Championships “. This competition is more or less the ancestor of the Roland Garros tournament. This was entirely due to the American sponsor Duane Williams. He observed that Wimbledon was the only tournament internationally recognized and in playing on grass, it privileged the players used to this surface, the English. In the rest of Europe, the clay court was chosen for maintenance reasons. He thus decided to sponsor a world championship on clay court which the Stade Français welcomed at “La Faisanderie” in the Parc de Saint-Cloud. For the story, Duane Williams never saw his project inaugurated. On April 1st 1912, returning from Paris, he boarded the Titanic and did not survive, unlike his son who later was to become a famous tennis player. These “ World Hard Court Championships” took place during a decade and saw players like Jean Borotra or Suzanne Lenglen before coming to an end and leaving way to the French Open which, in a few years later, moved into the new stadium “ Roland Garros”.
