Before folks sat around the TV watching American Horror Story or classic movies like The Shining and Friday the 13th, they gathered around the radio to listen to their favorite weekly programs. Many of them were comedies or dramas, just like today?s television programs, but there were also shows dedicated to the creepy crawly ? that made goosebumps rise and sent shivers down the spine. It?s often said that what you can?t see is scarier than what you can, and radio programs can sweep you up and create a whole spooky world in your imagination. Here are a few of the best! Tur n Lig ht s Of f t hen Cl ick t o List en Dr acul a This was the very first episode of The Mercury Theater on the Air. Although it aired in July, it?s horror is fit for Halloween. Orson Welles plays the roles of both Dr. Seward and Count Dracula. Hear the tale of Jonathan Harker being imprisoned in the Dracula?s decrepit castle. Then follow the cast as they travel to England and try to solve the mystery of this unusual count from Transylvania.1938 The Thing on t he Four bl e Fl oor This episode of Quite Please aired in August of 1948 is widely regarded as the finest piece of radio horror to ever hit the airwaves. It starts fairly slowly, with a man, Porky, describing working on an oil derrick. His friend comes to join him for some pork chops, and they discover ? something ? that?s come up from a mile below the earth. I listened to this during the very middle of the day, and I still got goosebumps. It features perhaps the most chilling ?voice? you?ll ever hear. 1948 The Devil Doct or Created by Alonzo Deen Cole, The Witch?s Tale was the first radio show devoted to horror and the supernatural. Its tales often had a Gothic feel to them, probing into a fantastic past when sorcerers and spirits roamed the earth and made mere mortals their playthings. 1934

Nearly 50 years after its debut, there?s still never been a television series quite like Dark Shadows. The ABC daytime soap opera, which aired from 1966 to 1971, was a charmingly under-budgeted Gothic melodrama about a spooky seaside town in Maine that blended the supernatural (werewolves, witchcraft, and zombies) with parallel universes and time travel; angst-ridden vampire Barnabas Collins (Jonathan Frid) emerged as the show?s breakout star. General Hospital it wasn?t. Usually airing in late afternoons, Dark Shadows acquired a large teenage fan base. Here are fun facts about the show. 1.BARNABAS COLLINS WAS AN AFTERTHOUGHT. Creator Dan Curtis originally had in mind a dramatic series about the strange residents of Collinsport, Maine, as viewed from the perspective of newly-arrived governess Victoria Winters. Though mystical elements? like ghosts? were present, they were subtle and slow to materialize. 2.THE SPECIAL EFFECTS CONSISTED OF SARAN WRAP AND VASELINE. With a roughly $70,000 budget to shoot its five weekly episodes, Dark Shadows had to approach its special effects conservatively. Camera operator Stuart Goodman found that covering his lens with plastic wrap and then dabbing Vaseline at the edges to create a hazy, dreamlike visual was surprisingly effective. To emulate actors being trapped in a blaze, Goodman would simply put a bucket in front of himself and light it on fire. 3.THERE WAS NO TIME TO GO BACK AND FIX MISTAKES. Dark Shadows was live and had to maintain a standard soap schedule that allowed episodes to air daily. Because of the compressed production, actor flubs, focus mistakes, and other gaffes that would normally be re-shot had to remain in the show.
4. BARNABAS DIDN?T TALK MUCH WHILE FANGED. Dampened vocally by the fangs he had to wear, Frid would spit out the fangs, deliver the dialogue, then stuff them back in when the camera returned to him. 5. IT WAS ABC?S FIRST COLOR SOAP. Though soaps had experimented with color before, Dark Shadows became the first daytime serial on ABC to switch to the format in 1967. (It had spent its first year in black and white.) 6. IT?S THE ONLY SOAP TO SPAWN THREE FEATURE FILMS. It?s a testament to Dark Shadows' rabid following that the series birthed two feature films with the original cast? virtually unheard of for a soap opera of any era . Curtis directed 1970?s House of Dark Shadows, which covered much of the same ground as the series and in 1971, Curtis wanted to continue the story with another film. Night of Dark Shadows was released that same year. 7. THERE WAS A COMIC STRIP.

We watch movies in order to experience a roller-coaster ride of emotional responses. Horror movies aim to evoke fear, whose family of tertiary emotions consist of shock, alarm, mortification, panic, hysteria, horror, terror and fright. Whether or not a horror movie is good or bad is subjective. This short article explores those movies which are commonly regarded as the top horror movies; the movies that - for one reason or another - most potently engaged our fears. Lets remember those double features that we looked forward each week with our friends and remembered late at night. The following are just a few of the best horror movies but not inclusive. 1) House On Haunt ed Hil l (1959) Eccentric multimillionaire and his wife invite five unrelated strangers to a huge, isolated mansion. Starring: Vincent Price, Carol Ohmart, Richard Long.
2) 13 Ghost s (1960) Out of all the top horror movies this ghost movie is one of the best. Uncle Zorba, an occultist, wills a huge unusual house to his needy nephew Cyrus and his family. 3) Dracul a (1931) The dashing, mysterious Count Dracula (Bela Lugosi), after hypnotizing a British soldier, Renfield (Dwight Frye), into his mindless slave, travels to London and takes up residence in an old castle. The Martians intend to invade Earth, but cannot strike until they possess the plans for inventor Cyrus Layton's (James Craven) long-range "jet plane" spaceship. The advance scout for the invasion is a strangely garbed being called the Purple Monster (Roy Barcroft), who can take over the identity of any earth man. If Layton's niece Sheila (Linda Sterling) and criminologist Craig Foster (Dennis Moore) fail to stop the threat of the Purple Monster, it's the end of the human race! (1945 - Republic Pictures)
