Welcome to our very first youth program. Inside you will find a year’s worth of development workshops, performances and exhibitions, designed to excite and inspire the budding artists of the Gold Coast. In 2012, The Arts Centre Gold Coast will present for the first time, The Friends of The Arts Centre Gold Coast Youth Arts Academy, a series of workshops and residencies for Gold Coast youth. Focused on providing a diverse range of opportunities and experiences, the program will cater for a breadth of ages encompassing birth to 24 years. Each of the art forms within the program will be presented and conducted by some of the country’s most reputable practitioners and companies. Thanks to our kind sponsors McDonald’s Gold Coast, we will also continue to provide the Gold Coast with quality children’s and youth theatre experiences, including stage renditions of popular children’s books such as The Gruffalo’s Child and moving performances that address the tough issues faced by our young residents, such as drug use (April’s Fool). We have brought some fantastic performances to your door step, so you no longer need to travel to Brisbane for your cultural fix. The Gold Coast City Gallery will continue to celebrate and develop the skills of the city’s fine young artists with the continuation of the annual Energies exhibition, gallery tours and breakout workshops with professional Gold Coast artists. We are pleased to be able to offer these fabulous opportunities for youth to engage and connect with performing and visual arts. We invite you to embrace and support the initiatives on offer and reiterate that the opportunities enclosed are about enriching the lives of our younger population through learning new skills, exploring new concepts, forming new friendships and having fun.

The Friends of The Arts Centre Gold Coast is a not-for-profit organisation supporting The Arts Centre Gold Coast in its promotion of artistic and cultural pursuits. We currently average 1,700 members annually and over the 25 years of The Arts Centre’s existence, we have donated close to $200,000 for items on the Centre’s ‘wish list’ with a more recent focus on supporting the development of young artistic talent. Membership fees are the main source of our funds. A Friends’ Gift Fund was established in 2006 with the assistance of Friends’ Life Members and Arts Centre Platinum Benefactors, Jock and Beverly McIlwain, who, along with other regular donors, have continued to donate to the fund since its launch. Interest on the fund provides scholarships to help aspiring Gold Coast people reach their artistic potential. The Friends are excited to be a key supporter of The Arts Centre’s newest youth venture, to be known as The Friends of The Arts Centre Gold Coast Youth Arts Academy. This program will enable many more talented young people on the Gold Coast to access the expertise and wisdom of a variety of industry professionals. I congratulate The Arts Centre on this initiative of which the Friends are proud to be a part. Applying for Friends of The Arts Centre Gold Coast Scholarship Graduates of The Friends of The Arts Centre Gold Coast Youth Arts Academy and other aspiring Gold Coast artists are invited to apply for Scholarships available from The Friends’ Gift Fund. These scholarships – Friends’ scholarships and a special Beverly McIlwain Scholarship - are intended to assist talented artists in the Gold Coast community who would benefit from additional training but are unable to afford the costs involved. The word ‘artist’ covers all forms of visual and performing arts. Applicants must be residents of Gold Coast City and whilst there is no limitation on age or gender, it is expected that most of the applicants will be young and close to embarking upon their chosen career or are already established and wishing to advance their career. Notification for applications will be posted in the local press from time to time and applicants will be expected to prove their

level of attainment in the field of the arts in which they are seeking to excel. Applicants will be required to give full details, including costs, of the course of study or tutelage they are seeking to attend. This twelve day professional development program aims to create an understanding and appreciation of the art form which is music theatre. It seeks to encourage young talented people aged 15 to 21 to explore, develop and enhance their singing, dancing and acting skills and to foster the integration of those skills to become a ‘triple threat’ music theatre performer. Presented by some of this country’s leading industry educators and practitioners, participants will gain invaluable insight to the professional side of the industry. 60 participants will be chosen through an application and audition process. The residency will focus on skills-based learning in all the areas of performance and tailored specifically to the age group. Masterclasses with leading professional music theatre performers will be included to excite and inspire the participants.

This is a rare opportunity to learn from some of the industry’s leading practitioners and to discover what it takes to be a ‘triple threat’ performer. Through the generous contribution of supporters and sponsors, a limited number of full and/or partial grants will be available for students who would be unable to participate without a level of financial support. Applicants will be required to complete an application form and undertake an informal interview with their parent/guardian. The interview panel will consist of an Arts Centre Board Member, a Friends of the Arts Centre Executive Committee Member and the Arts Centre’s Development Manager.

INTRODUCING... Avigail Herman is well respected in the musical theatre industry and is a passionate advocate for the training of music theatre performers. She was Head of Music at NIDA from 1993 to 1997 leaving that position in 1999 to set up and develop NIDA’s very successful one year music theatre course ‘Singer Dancer Actor’ in association with Keith Bain, which became a Diploma in Music Theatre (2009).

Avigail provides the residency with impeccable industry contacts, the capacity to attract highly qualified and skilled practitioners to the project, a demonstrated passion for musical theatre and experience at a secondary and tertiary level in conducting quality musical theatre programs with high level outcomes – making the residency a truly rare and valuable experience for young Gold Coast performers.

With a holistic vision and professional philosophy, the course trained young people in the art of becoming a ‘triple threat’ practitioner. The course was extremely successful and saw graduates achieve success both nationally and internationally. Following Keith’s retirement, Avigail continued to lead this program until the end of 2010.

Katie Kermond has over 25 years professional experience in the entertainment industry with comprehensive skills as a Producer, Choreographer, Production Coordinator, Performer and Dance Teacher. Katie has appeared in such major musicals as West Side Story, Camelot, La Cage Aux Follies, Guys and Dolls, Evita, Sugar Babies, Grease, Jerry’s Girls, Chicago and Singing in the Rain.

Such is the quality and diversity of Avigail’s teaching and her expertise in the integration of music, text and the art of storytelling through song that she is in constant demand from institutions and organisations both nationally and internationally.

Our lead tutor team will be supported with some key industry professionals including NIDA’s former head of acting, Tony Knight, and music theatre performers Shaun Rennie and Elise McCann.

Some of Avigail’s diverse credits include establishing the music department for David Atkins’ Performing Arts School, working as a syllabus consultant for TAFE’s Music Theatre Certificate, teaching score reading to Sydney Opera House Stage Managers, conducting workshops and master classes (Adelaide Cabaret Festival, Australian Theatre for Young People, Melbourne Cabaret Festival, Noosa Long Weekend and Queensland Performing Arts Trust (QPAT)) and is in demand as a musical theatre, television and cabaret performer.

Bev Kennedy is regarded as one of Australia’s leading Musical Directors, having worked on over 20 professional productions including Billy Elliot, Mamma Mia!, The Producers, We Will Rock You, The Lion King, Priscilla Queen of the Desert and Chicago to name but a few.

The Youth Dance Project will take the form of an intensive five day boot camp to be held in January, 2012. It will cater for two age groups: 12 – 15 years and 16 – 19 years. The program will be available to 50 applicants and places will be issued on a first come, first served basis (there are no auditions required for this project).

INTRODUCING... Most recently Ben won the hearts of many dedicated lovers of dance, who followed his routines on So You Think You Can Dance (2009). Ben was the virtuoso charismatic dancer, able to convey light-hearted playfulness or deep emotion when called for. Ben’s versatility and execution of any dance routine was prized for its elegance, grace, strength, originality and precision. Since completing his commitments as a top four finalist on So You Think You Can Dance, Ben has had the opportunity to choreograph, perform and teach all over Australia. In 2010/2011 Ben was awarded the Artist in Residency here at The Arts Centre Gold Coast. In this role, Ben created and produced Blood, Sweat and Dance – which was received with acclaim by audience members and critics alike. Ben has also performed in live stage productions including the Australian world premiere production of Dirty Dancing, The Boy From Oz (starring Hugh Jackman) and Jupiter’s Casino productions – Hidden Palace and Rhythm of the Night.

Joining Ben for the Youth Dance Residency is guest facilitator Kelley Abbey. For over two decades Kelley Abbey has performed, danced and choreographed for theatre, film and television. In 2010, Kelley was the Choreographer of the Australian tour of Fame The Musical – which won her yet another Helpmann Award. Kelley’s choreography is best recognised from the memorable group routines she created for the So You Think You Can Dance Australia. The beauty of her routines led to her being invited as the only Australian choreographer to create group routines for the So You Think You Can Dance - America. Most recently Kelley has completed works on a new Australian musical film called Goddess, starring Ronan Keating and Magda Szubanski.

The purpose of the Fill This Space Youth Project is to support the presentation of a new and contemporary work produced by a Gold Coast theatre maker, for youth and involving youth.

WHERE WILL THE FILL THIS SPACE PROJECT BE STAGED? In The Space, the new black box theatre. Located on level two of The Arts Centre. It is a 105 seat theatre with a stage area of 8m x 5m, equipped with audio and lighting equipment, dressing room facilities and a bar service area. There is easy access to the venue via stairway or elevator. The Arts Centre Gold Coast in partnership with Inter Urban Arts and Dancenorth, will provide one-on-one mentoring with at-risk youth to create individual stories that reflect each student’s artistic expression. Throughout the five day residency, the students will engage in dance-theatre processes and be supported in exploring their individual stories in a dynamic exchange between the professional dancer and the student.

This program will be divided into two residencies, providing budding young actors aged 8 – 14 years and 15 – 24 years with the opportunity to undertake a five day residency conducted by Queensland Theatre Company. Curriculum for each residency program will be tailored to the skills of the corresponding age group. The Junior Residency will highlight: • Dramatic acting – focusing on scene development • Characterisation – exploring physical comedy techniques and ways to approach comic characterisations • Voice – improving control, range and projection plus promoting better vocal clarity and articulation production • Vital performance and theatrical skills that promote self-worth and build confidence in a safe and professional environment The Youth Residency will take an in-depth look at topics such as: • Approaches to text – analysing narrative structure and exploring style, genre and interpretation

A showcase will be held at the conclusion of each residency to highlight what has been taught and certificates of participation presented. The Youth Theatre Project is a text based work catering for the 16 – 21 year age group. To date, The Arts Centre has presented two Youth Theatre Projects – Oh The Humanity & Other Exclamations! (2010) and The Good Doctor (2011). These Projects have provided young Gold Coast performers with expert guidance from professional directors, Jason Klarwein and Jennifer Flowers.

The Good Doctor, assisted by 2011 Artist in Residence – Monette Lee. This production was masterfully directed with the guidance and support of these experienced women.

The inaugural Youth Theatre Project, Oh the Humanity and Other Exclamations! directed by Jason Klarwein, offered local actors an incredible professional experience. The success of this introductory season saw The Youth Theatre initiative skyrocket, making it one of The Arts Centre’s flagship annual projects.

Through the support of Queensland Theatre Company, The Arts Centre was thrilled to engage Jennifer Flowers as director for the 2011 production of

APRIL’S FOOL BY DAVID BURTON A true story of love, family, strength and the choices we make. In April 2009, two weeks short of his nineteenth birthday, Toowoomba teenager Kristjan Terauds died due to complications from illicit drug use. Inspired by ‘April’s Fool’, an account of his son’s death by Kristjan’s father, the Empire Theatre commissioned awardwinning playwright, David Burton to bring this story to the stage. Using the words of Kristjan’s friends and family interviewed over many months, the result is a powerful mix of sadness, loss and ultimately love, laced with humour. April’s Fool promises to be a thoughtprovoking and ultimately optimistic

reflection on how we all live our lives. Young people, parents, teachers, youth workers and theatre critics have universally praised April’s Fool for its ability to engage them in this story, gently sharing with its audience and at no time seeking to lecture or preach. The result is a theatre experience that reflects Kristjan himself – loving, warm, generous, open, honourable, gentle, complex and provocative. GOLD COAST CITY GALLERY EXHIBITIONS Students from Grade 4 and Grade 6 at Benowa State School worked with the concepts presented in the exhibition Now and When Australian Urbanism over two terms in a partnership developed with their school and the Gold Coast City Gallery and the Queensland Academies Young Scholars Program. Not only do students benefit from looking closely at the texture, detail and materials that make up the art work, they also have the opportunity to discuss, question and comment about what they see. Considering scale, relationships and the physical decisions about display are also learnings that students engage with - things for which looking at art in reproduction just isn’t the same. With two large exhibition spaces, our foyer gallery and the Darkroom for the showing of media works all hosting constantly rotating displays, students have the opportunity to have a varied excursion visit. Their time in the gallery usually involves a general talk about what is on exhibition and these are conducted in a vigorous and often playful question and answer style, tailored to the age of the group. Students are then guided into active looking and are encouraged to use a ‘thinking eye’. Many exhibitions have structured education materials that relate directly to the curriculum and these can be downloaded from our website prior to your visit. Works from the permanent collection are also dsplayed throughout The Arts Centre. A higlight is Willaim Robinsons giant Rainforest painting and we have produced a extensive educaiional resource, Art Unpacked Land and Place which all Gold Coast schools have now received. This provides a whole range of ideas for curriculum related activities to deliver in the classroom setting. Another great activity is simply drawing in the gallery and we can provide the paper, pencils and clip boards for your group. If you require these materials please note this on your booking form. Some students are unfamiliar with visiting art galleries so we also talk to them about the civic role of a public gallery and highlight the extensive art collection that their city owns.

JACARANDA ACQUISITIVE DRAWING AWARD (JADA) 2010 Putting a pencil to paper and drawing is probably the first experience that many students have with art making. Despite this, drawing was regarded as less important than other art forms. Drawing has now very firmly come out of the shadows and many contemporary artists are keen to include it as part of their practice and they often challenge our notions of what a drawing can be. pastel, charcoal, biro, ink and crayon on surfaces such as plastic, wood and many kinds of paper - rolled, flat or in artist books. The centrepiece of JADA 2010 is the drawing, Trees Waterfall Back by Peter Alwast who was the winner of the $15,000 major prize. Peter grew up on the Gold Coast and studied in Brisbane and New York. Peter describes it as a drawing using different signs that are brought together, or held momentarily in the mind, to form a perception of space.

In addition to winning the JADA in 2010 he was the recipient of the Premiers New Media Award in 2008 and his work was acquired in that year by Gold Coast City Gallery from the Gold Coast Art Prize.

JUDY WATSON HERON ISLAND SUITE Judy Watson was born in Mundubbera and belongs to the Waanyi language group and is one of Australia’s most significant practicing artists. Her work is characterized by deeply felt understanding of the visceral connection between land and the people and creatures who have belonged to it. In 2009 she was appointed the first artist-in-residence at The University of Queensland’s Heron Island Research Station and the extended time on the island was perfectly suited to her process of intense observation and research.

The Heron Island Suite of etchings is her response to the time she spent on the island, where she examined worrying signs of the impact of human activity and the onset of global warming on the Great Barrier Reef. On her daily island

walks, she would collect material for visual research, such as coral forms, seaweed, feathers, vegetation and sea pods. The drawings she produced from this material provided the stimulus for these wonderful colourful etchings. The artist has altered a number of plates in the series by re-working and overlaying the prints with research charts developed by the scientists who are based at the research station. These graphs examine how ocean acidification, changes to sea-surface temperature, El Niño and global warming is impacting on coral bleaching and the breeding success of several species of seabirds. MARIAN DREW + ALANA HAMPTON: THE LORIKEET ISLAND PROJECT Marian Drew and Alana Hampton present a multi-channel media and sound installation; creating an immersive environment through the layering of light, sound, light drawing and the projection of still and moving photographic images.

collaboration of the Griffith School of Coastal Management. Visitors will find themselves experiencing moments of darkness, to emulate the experience of being on the water at night – floating in suspension in flux with the tide.

Their work is based around a little visited island in the middle of the Gold Coast Broadwater – which they have named after the multitude of lorikeets that have made it their home. The island is covered with mangroves and at high tide is completely washed through by the sea, creating an environment that is totally transformed by the rhythms of the moon and sea water. The final installation also draws upon historical, scientific, and environmental knowledge with the

SEXUALISING THE CITY Within the popular imagination there is a direct link between the image of the sexualized body and the city image of the Gold Coast. These perceptions are however often limited by cliché and disparaged, leading to a wider dismissal of the Gold Coast as a whole. This exhibition intends to confront and challenge this view and will present important and visually rich images and objects from art, design, fashion, popular culture and architecture from the 1920s’ to the present. It aims to offer a much more layered and diverse view of the way in which the crafting of these types of images grew to contribute to city identity. In doing so the exhibition also intends chart in microcosm, the changes that have occurred in wider Australian society regarding the depiction of women and men. seen the creation of very potent images of women and men. Sexualising the City will bring the background and reasons for this type of imagery to the forefront and will identify the wider culture around the city as a tourist destination and what in effect was actually being promoted to potential visitors. The exhibition will also explore the way that artists have responded to this visual culture and have sought to define their own way of seeing the body within this very particular city environment. The exhibition will also present design elements from the fields of architecture, graphics, commercial photography and fashion and as such acknowledge the work of these creative disciplines in contributing to this broader visual culture. are due a minimum of two weeks prior to the performance date. You have until this time to alter numbers (subject to availability). Please note that although we try our best to avoid it, if group numbers increase they may not be able to seat additional guests with the group.
