About Art Start
Art Start uses the creative process to nurture the voices, hearts, and minds of youth from historically marginalized communities, offering a space for them to imagine, believe, and represent their creative vision for their lives and communities
Through consistent workshops with long-term partners, including youth organizations, schools, alternative sentencing programs, and residences for youth and families experiencing homelessness, art becomes the starting point of a larger life process, and the start of larger conversations about the future of our communities
Creative Connections / Emerging Artist Residency
Art Start’s Creative Connections is a continuum of pathways for Milwaukee youth ages 14-24 from historically marginalized communities to build artistic expertise, personal development and career readiness. Creative Connections provides varying levels of commitment spanning from one workshop to several years to best meet each participant where they are at various stages of their lives and circumstances. Creative Connections combats marginalization often experienced by youth and artists of color and provides access to paid work in the creative economy while building authentic connections to the arts and media industries All participants in Art Start’s Creative Connections have access to mental health and social service support, provided by on-staff Licensed Social Work-Artists
Creative Connections includes the Art Start Emerging Artist residency for young creatives who have exhibited interest and artistic talent, but require more resources and support to turn that talent into concrete career opportunities This 9-month residency provides Emerging Artists with a safe space to explore through a rigorous schedule of coursework, project creation, networking, paid internships, portfolio development, showcase opportunities, career-counseling, and participation and transportation stipends. Emerging Artists continue on as professional creatives, community artists, college graduates, employees, leaders, and responsible citizens with a clear vision and plan for their personal success in the arts.

Jovanny Hernandez Caballero
Art Start is proud to collaborate with industry and community partners like Nō Studios to offer teen and young adult artists safe spaces and public platforms to express their creative voices and visions. Like Jovanny Caballero, who graduated from the Art Start Emerging Artist residency program in 2022, most young artists in Milwaukee are expressing their desire to transform our world. They need to know we are asking, and listening to their courageous replies. We admire Jovanny for all the ways in which he has and will continue to be a creative leader and changemaker in Milwaukee and beyond

The launch event will take place on April 12th both in-person at Nō Studios and online This hybrid experience will showcase the mini-documentary and offer an opportunity for Q&A with the featured artist: Jovanny Hernandez Caballero.
March 27, 2023 – Milwaukee, WI – Lisa Caesar, the COO of Nō Studios announced today, CREATING MILWAUKEE, a mini-documentary series produced by Nō Studios and presented by The American Family Insurance Institute for Corporate and Social Impact. The series explores the stories of Milwaukee area creatives across various disciplines while highlighting their work and its connection to their communities.
The collaboration begins with a film featuring Milwaukee community artist and photographer, Jovanny Hernandez Caballero Caballero’s work explores themes of his cultural heritage and identity, as a first generation American and descendants of Mixtecs Through his photography, he documents the beauty of Milwaukee's South Side and his family's native land of Oaxaca, Mexico
Says Jovanny: "From the first steps of my ancestors in the mountains of Oaxaca, to my parent's first steps in the United States, my family represents who I am. My identity is a mixture of three worlds; the ancient, the modern, and the world my parents left behind in Mexico. I am unable to enter each world completely due to physical and emotional barriers. I can only see my family through the cracks of the fence, unable to grasp their hands. They have become like a photographic exposure; overexposed, blurry, and incomplete.”
"Milwaukee is rich with incredibly diverse local talent. We are very excited to partner with The American Family Insurance Institute for Corporate and Social Impact to bring more attention to these artists, and their unique work, to foster awareness, conversations and collaborations among the city’s many great creative communities," stated John Ridley, founder and CEO, Nō Studios
