Les Demoiselles d’Avignon Pablo Picasso 1907 Oil on Canvas

Project Idea As a collective we are planning on highlighting misogyny in the art industry by remaking Picasso’s piece ‘Les Demoiselles d’Avignon’. Throughout history there has been a clear lack of female representation within the art world. We aim to use Picasso as a main example of this as his history with women lead to more female suppression within the art world. For example, one of his mistresses Dora Marr was an artist in her own right but that has been overshadowed by her relationship with Picasso. We want to highlight the continued lack of female representation in the art industry by including current female artists in our remade piece as well as past female artist who have been overshadowed or purposely suppressed by male contemporaries in their respective periods. This will allow us to show the chronology of women in the art industry. We aim to focus on a lack of female representation in art galleries as this ties in with our original artefact: ‘Les Demoiselles d’Avignon’. We will use the composition of ‘Les Demoiselles d’Avignon’ but instead of nude models we will use female artists. The models used in ‘Les Demoiselles d’Avignon’ were prostitutes, which brought into a modern age illustrates the normalised misogyny of the time; Picasso used these models to benefit him with little benefit to the women in the piece.

Elizabeth I really like 70’s clothing/ music, so I like making art that has a bit of a 70’s aesthetic in my own interpretated way to it. If I draw a person, they will have something covering their eyes. The things I draw are usually light-hearted and I don’t usually have a message behind them other than I think it’s silly or I like the way it looks. For this project I have been researching artists who are still alive now that make feminist work or talk about sexism in the art industry (such as Sarah Lucas, Caroline Walker, Jenni Granholm) and also female painters throughout history who were forgotten or overshadowed (such as Artemisia Gentileschi, Adelaide Labille- Guard, Suzanna Valadon). I have also been drawing up sketches of ways the statues could be exhibited.

Lauren As shown in our current project I have great interest in feminism and I often use the topic as a source of inspiration. I also have also really enjoyed portraiture using simple pencil, fineliners and sometimes acrylic and printmaking as my favourite mediums. For this project I contributed by first of all creating our idea for our exhibition during group sessions and tutorials. One our idea was established I have been responsible for creating how Dora Maar and Mina Carlson- Bredberg look in our visual representation. I have also looked into conceptualising our exhibition space through research into materials, scale and some aesthetics surrounding the visual properties of the space.

Jessie For this project I researched into female artists like Yoko Ono and Rose O’Neill who fights for woman’s rights in every aspect, and focus on Yoko Ono because she have a very famous husband John Lennon and fit the concepts perfectly .Also on how woman naked body become a sex image and come up with the idea of not a muse of how artist and scientist use to pray to the nine muse of inspiration. I like working with ink and watercolour and, also interested in make 3D using clay and fabric. I like things colourful but also enjoy working with single gradient colour. My character usually are drawn without a face or a face expression ,since drawing pretty face dose not help the message I am trying to make.I am often inspired by thing around me ,because I believe enjoy small things in life is important and I hope my work could evokes resonance among viewers.

Lydia For this project I researched into female artist such as Yayoi Kusama and Margaret Keane as well as some renaissance painters such as Artemisia Gentileschi. But I finally settled on Rose-Adélaïde Ducreux due to her works being credited to to men for many years. I also did some research into statistics of female representation in art galleries and how art pieces are chosen for exhibition spaces. In the field of illustration, I enjoy printing as well as digital drawing. A lot of time I focus on political pieces, reflecting a lot on current affairs which is why this project was interesting for me as it looks into the current state of female representation. I normally use black and white a lot in my work but when I draw digitally, I tend to incorporate colour which I hope translates my ideas efficiently when looking at this exhibition

Proposal Satement As a group we aim to highlight misogyny in the art industry. We want to use our remade version of Pablo Picasso’s ‘Les Demoiselles d’Avignon’ to do this. For our exhibition piece we want to make a life size 3D sculpture of ‘Les Demoiselles d’Avignon’ made from plaster as that makes them easier to move around. The sculpture would be life size, so it gives a human feel. Instead of nude models like the original piece, our remade sculpture would feature female artist throughout history who have been overshadowed by male contemporaries of their respective time period. In our exhibition space we want to have those male contemporary’s art used as wallpaper behind the female figures and a model picture frame in front, so it allows the audience to look through the picture frame at these women. However, they (now placed in front of the men) are now overshadowing the male artist and taking back the space for themselves. In the original painting two of the figures are wearing tribal masks. For our exhibition we would like the models to be holding those masks to signify the women showing their faces in the rat industry. Our female artist will be depicted with props that give a visual description of their work to again show that they are more than the men who surprised their work. By including women, it is also putting them in a space where they are underrepresented. The floors will be wooden as that is used universally throughout time periods. We want our exhibition to take place in an art gallery as that adds to the groups message of addressing misogyny in the art industry. Looking straight at art galleries’, which are typically male dominated spaces emphasises the collective’s message.

Logistics Our sculpture will be life size and made out of plaster as that is eay to move, Which brings the time to install down. We would want male contemporaries pices to walpaper the space which would be the most time consuming aspect of our exhibition. The floors would just be plain wood flooring as that is universially used across time periods and would still be used in most exhibition spaces, This would save on money. We estimate it would take a day to install the sculpture as that would be mainly lifting them and assmebling them on site. The wallpaper would come already attached to board so would just be screwed to the already existing walls so this may take up to a day as well. The main health and safety concerns would be heavy lifting and climbing up ladders to attach the ‘wallpaper’. This would be solved specielist safety eqipment. The cost over all for our exhibition would be around £45000. this would factor in the cost of materials used including any aramtures and other supporting materials.

Exhibition Venue We want our exhibition to take place in an art gallery as this will highlight the main objective of our piece -putting female artists back into the frame of te art world. We would have it take place in an art gallery taht houses more traditional pieces as many of our female artist are from the past.
