NOTED

Hello There!

I've been enamored with the glossy world of magazines since I was a little girl cutting out pictures of early aught Britney-esque 2000's style, pouring over Seventeen's makeup tips and Teen Vogue's left of centre fashion. In a way, magazines played a huge role in raising me. When my friends and I chose to create NOTED there was an excitement buzzing around that's been infectious. I feel so blesed for the opportunity to share my voice with kindred spirits. I hope you love our passion as much as we do!

XX, Bénja Gladden

They say you become like the people you surround yourself with; lucky for me, my best friends are some of the most innovative and driven women I know. There’s truly nothing as powerful as the creative spirit once it meets passion. The idea for NOTED materialized when Bénja, Danielle and I were in need of an outlet to let us express our thoughts outside of the guidelines of our internships. We’ve gathered inspiration from our daily lives at the office to the daring street style looks of New York women to the chaos that is fashion week and from our coveted fashion school classrooms to give you a peak at how we define creativity.

Kendall Becker

There is nothing more I enjoy more than being surrounded by

people that motivate me to be passionate about what I love. Kendall, Bénja, and I feel so strongly about voicing our opinions on female empowerment. It is important to us to share the ways you can feel confident in yourself and your work everyday. NOTED is an inspiration to all women who are ready to make steps towards entering the fashion industry whether it is today, tomorrow or a few months from now. You will be able to grab some tricks of the trade and guidelines on how to stay motivated, prepared, and excited for the future.

With Love, Danielle Casso

Take Our Word For It...

New York City Intern Survival Tips

“The app Transit lets you customize your route to only show you the subway, bus or any option you want.” - Kennedy

“Wearing sneakers isn’t an ‘athleisure trend’, it’s vital to life when you’re spending the day going from the aesthetic walls in Soho to museums in the Upper East.” - Claire “Learn the difference between the local and express subway. It’ll save you from many unwanted trips to Brooklyn.” - Kendall

“Expect to earn your place in the office. Don't show comfortability too fast and be patient.” - Bénja “Although you may want to wear those fun heeled shoes to work, you will regret it when they send you running around the Garment District.” - Emily “Treat every small task as a big one because no matter how small it may seem it's supporting the big picture.” - Danielle

“Keep an ongoing list in the notes on your phone of every Starbucks bathroom code you go to.” - Claire “If you wear heels to work as a design intern, people will secretly judge you.” - Kimberly

Thriving & Surviving By. BĂŠnja Gladden & Kendall Becker

How did you land your current role?

Right after graduation I connected with multiple fashion industry recruiters on linked-in. I walked into an interview at 24/7 recruiting agency and walked out with an interview for a temp to perm Merchandising Assistant role at Tommy Hilfiger the next morning. After being hired and helping with the women's apparel team for about three months. I was hired on full time as an assistant buyer for women's dresses, tees and outerwear.

What factors did you consider when planning for your future?

Chelsea Ives @chelsea_ives Assistant Buyer

I knew I wanted to be able to support myself in NYC. I don't ever want to work at a company that doesn't inspire me or be in a role I don't see myself in for more than a year. After graduation it was pretty clear to me I want to be in the buying department of a well known company or brand. I wouldn't waste time in positions that didn't support my end goal.

How does your current job fit into your career path? Currently I'm an assistant designer at Macy's. I'd like to stay within the company, being promoted to associate designer, to designer, to design director, etc. I love being at a company that promotes growth from within. There's no short supply of opportunities to evolve and develop alongside your career.

Lydia Dallas @lydiadallas Assistant Designer

What's your favorite things to do in the city when you're not working?

Exploring! I love taking time on the weekends to wander around parts of the city I haven't been able to spend much time in. Especially during the summer it's great to take some time to enjoy the nice weather. Sometimes I even take my sketchbook to the park and draw inspiration sketches from the people I see walking around me.

How did you land your current role? I interned at NYLON in college, and stayed in touch with my supervisors. When I was a few weeks out from graduation, I reached out to them to ask for their advice on the industry, and as it turned out they were looking to hire an editorial assistant. I went through two rounds of interviews and submitted pitches that I thought would work well for the brand and got the job. After seven and a half months, I was promoted to my current position as assistant editor and I’ve been in this role since January 2017.

Austen Tosone @jane_aus10 Asistant Editor

Who’s been your most influential mentor over the years?

I think I’d have to say my mom! She was an editor back in the day, and although things are obviously much different from when she was in the industry, she’s a great person to bounce ideas off of, talk about my long-term goals, edit cover letters and resumes, and even let me vent to her when I’m stressed out.

What dreams and goals inspired you to succeed?

I always knew I wanted to be a writer, and that I wanted to do something creative. I guess the stacks and stacks of magazines in my room at home were a pretty clear indication that I would end up working at one! My longterm goals are pretty normal—I want to have a job that I love and make work that I’m proud of in the fashion and publishing industry.

"Some women choose to follow men and some women choose to follow their dreams. If you're wondering which way to go, remember your career will never wake up and tell you that it doesn't love you ahymore." -Lady Gaga

ST. IVES The Mix Bar

The latest and greatest in skincare has been the ability to customize products based on your own specific needs.

This kind of luxury is usually reserved for those who can afford their high price tags. St. Ives scrubs and lotions are a drug store miracle; so when the Mix Bar pop up (located at 577 Broadway in the heart of Soho) was announced, New York women everywhere were buzzing with excitement. Initially, customizable skin care seemed like an unattainable dream for the everyday woman. St. Ives has found a way to provide an experience, service and product all at a price of $12. They were so overwhelming that Princess Leia buns were the only hairstlye my mother could master. Needless to say they were the bane of my excistence. It wasn't until about 3 years ago that I really began to embrace and appreciate them. For my first summer in NYC I knew my curly hair regiment would have to be humidity proof. I started my hunt for my own "bible" products in April.

The Nightmare of Dating in M A N H A T T A N

“I'm at this great bar on the Upper East Side and my date tells me that when he was bored in college he would watch YouTube videos on how to read people’s hands. Next thing I know this man is grabbing my hand and give me a 25 minute palm reading. I faked a call from my mom and called the uber from the bathroom.”

-Ciara, 22

"I was seeing this guy I'd met on tinder. We'd been on a few dates and I'd finally decided to bring him over. We're hanging out and watching tv and I went into the kitchen to grab a drink. I came back to him was profusely rubbing his eyes and crying.

I asked what happened; but with my pink pepper spray in his hand, the idiot tried his best to explain that he sprayed it “to see if it actually worked”. I should've known better than to date a guy from Queens with little to talk about other than his love of weed." -Kylie, 23

"I matched with Sam, a hottie from NYU. For our second date, he took me to a nice spot in Chelsea. Like, $18 drinks nice. I'd been day drinking prior to the date so when he orders dinner, I order a drink, finally he ordered dessert and I order a snickers martini. After walking me back home I proceed to throw up on his shoes and fall to the ground laughing about it. He took me up and left me with my roommates but will still text me to this day. I'm too embarased to text back!" -Anna, 21

“One time my friend and I started talking to this random man who ended up buying us pizza. He talked us into going back to his Penthouse to eat the pizza. The penthouse owner woke up and started talking to me and had me try on his ex-wifeʼs Harry Winston engagement ring. He turned out to be an app developer.

-Diandra, 20
