JD Samson

JD Samson talk about body, talk about MEN

Interview by Wazid Abdul Photography by Katie Coleslaw

JD Samson is a third of Le Tigre, a half of MEN, and an all round counter-culture hero. Now settling on letting her hair down a bit with MEN, we sat down for a little natter about London, early beginnings, and rubadub-dubstep.

JD Samson Do you like London? Hmm, well I didn’t used to. It can be just so... grey... cold... and expensive. But you know what, when the sun’s out it’s so beautiful. You never really have time to do anything exciting though because you’re so rushed off your feet. Yeah I see you travel a lot, how does your body take it? You must be like superman. Well this week alone, I’m going China then Atlanta, New York and London...all in a week. And usually you’re sat in a room like this (note: it looked a pretty boring room), so you can’t get out much. I was going to go out last night, but I don’t know, just didn’t. Didn’t feel like it. Page 14

When you DJ, what do you usually play? I think I am a crowd pleaser; I play what people want me to play. Which to be honest, tomorrow, I don’t what that is. We love our dubstep here. Well maybe not love, but it’s everywhere. That and Bashment. Dubstep is huge in New York too. It’s like... the biggest thing. I just find it really weird when people play 130 bpm music to dance to. And all these Top 40 dubstep remixes as well, it’s too much - they don’t make sense to me. When I DJed the South they would always ask me if I played dubstep. I’d get in and the promoters would instantly ask if I had any.

JD Samson What would you want in a club then?

Releases

I don’t know, I think disco is pretty cool. Bring it back. Kill the dubstep dragon. Well I tried dubstep to be fair, I’d hear the odd song and think, “this is pretty cool”...actually do you like Magnetic Man? I heard some of that, and I don’t really know what to think, it sounded ok. I used to like Skream like years ago, but it’s just become so watered down.

What did you listen to when you were a kid then? Well I came out when I was 15, and at that time I would listen to anyPage 15

JD Samson thing gay. Before that, I guess I was into pop music. Like Whitney Houston. But that was as a kid, I think now I balance the two. So the music is important too, but also what the people are like. Like I meet certain musicians, and then in my head I think “I can’t listen to you anymore”. There are some bands that I really like, that I just never want to meet to ruin it (laughs) What was your first record as kid? I think was mine a band called California Raisins. It was this American thing, like animated raisins. When did you first getting into “proper” bands? Page 16

Well my first show was Chicago that my sister took me too, this when I was ten, My sister was into them I didn’t really know what I was listening to. I just remember seeing drunk people and it freaked me out.
