ACADEMICS
Notre Dame offers an innovative Honors Program for highly qualified students, an overall curriculum designed for the unique learning style of boys, and faculty who know how to teach to their strengths. ND support services empower students to become independent learners. Among Notre Dame’s distinguishing academic advantages are: Trimester Schedule Notre Dame’s academic calendar is based on a trimester system that divides the school year into three equal terms. Each class period is 57 minutes long, and includes traditional instruction and hands-on or group activities that enhance learning. Essential Technology We recognize that technology is a primary “language” for today’s students. ND is committed to remaining at the cutting edge of educational technologies:
• Promethean board projectors with wide screen surfaces designed as an all-inone teaching and learning tool offer multi-touch interactivity, cloud-based software, HD viewing, and more.
Freshman Academic Program
• E-portfolio program lets each ND student digitally document his learning and showcase his accomplishments and academic growth over four years.

Teacher Advisory In addition to having the same guidance counselor all four years, each of our students belongs to a small Teacher Advisory group (4–5 students from each class year) that meets weekly with the same faculty member.

COMMUNITY
Guidance and Counseling Notre Dame’s Guidance and Counseling Department helps students acquire the academic, social, and personal skills needed to live successfully in today’s multicultural world. To ensure continuity and stability, students see the same counselor all four years. Our staff includes three full-time guidance counselors, a social worker, and a special education specialist. Together we work to create an effective learning environment for each student. College Counseling Beginning in the sophomore year, students are introduced to a number of interest assessment exercises as a way of determining areas of study that may be suitable for them. As juniors and seniors, our students participate in both group and individual activities with the guidance staff in order to learn the details of the college application process. Junior meetings are designed to introduce the students to all of the aspects of applying to college. Evening programs for parents offer insight into the college application process. Individual meetings are also planned between our guidance staff, the student, and the student’s parents to offer advice that relates specifically to that student and his family.
STUDENT LIFE
ND Peer Counselors on their August retreat at Fairfield University. Over 60 students are selected for this academic and leadership program. They serve as freshman mentors and role models, meeting weekly with their students in religion classes.
Notre Dame is a place where students form and experience community everywhere. During lunchtime, a class project, a community service activity, or an after-school club, students find many ways to interact with each other. In fact, research has proven that co-curricular activities enhance a student’s academic performance. At Notre Dame, we provide our students with a variety of opportunities to find their niche and be involved.
In the senior year our students participate in group meetings and individual counseling sessions to be sure that all of the details of applying to college are covered. Our counseling staff spends considerable time writing comprehensive college recommendations for our seniors. The senior English teachers review their students’ college essays in the fall. Counselors are available for direction and support during this demanding time. The Skills Center The Notre Dame Skills Center is designed to help students become confident, independent learners with a solid foundation for further success. The Center offers workshops that focus on test preparation, time management, organization, note taking, and study techniques.
Campus Ministry Campus Ministry adds a prayerful, reflective dimension to student life, and coordinates a broad array of programs and projects that engage and inspire students. Worship: Each morning at Notre Dame begins with a student-or faculty-led prayer, as do classes throughout the day. Retreats: An ongoing retreat program provides opportunities for deeper spiritual reflection and is an integral part of the

our students’ high school experience and underscores our Holy Cross mission. Our students combine action with personal reflection as they respond to the needs of others in positive and meaningful ways.
Peer Counseling Program: Selected seniors demonstrate leadership through service as mentors to members of the freshman class. In both classroom discovery and interactions with their students, peer counselors ease the transition for their freshman “mentees” and give them many tips on how to succeed at ND. THE ARTS
In an all-male educational setting, young men are more likely than their counterparts in coed schools to engage in a creative outlet like art, drama, writing, or music. To enhance the drama and music programs for which ND is known, we have a staged auditorium as well as a music suite with separate classroom and practice space. Both areas include the latest technology for lighting, sound, digital editing, and more.
At Notre Dame, the arts weave their way through the curriculum all four years. Not considered “frills” or “extras,” the arts at Notre Dame include academic courses, credit-bearing performance groups, and co-curricular activities that allow our budding artists, musicians, actors, and writers to share their common interests. Courses available include art, studio art, photography, digital photography, music appreciation, concert chorus, concert and marching band, Garage Band, percussion ensemble and guitar. 6
Co-curricular activities result in student art exhibits, annual stage plays, a literary magazine, and a variety of concerts. The following performance groups earn credit for participating, and their collective talent is a source of pride for Notre Dame: Introduction to Band Intermediate Band Concert/Marching Band Concert Chorus Guitar Garage Band I & II Percussion Ensemble

WHY THE ARTS? Through the arts, the strands of character development are strengthened as students learn that patience is a component of progress, that only “practice makes perfect,” and that sharing creative results with others includes both risks and rewards. In the Holy Cross tradition, such avenues to self-expression contribute to the shaping of a well-rounded person.

ATHLETICS
Notre Dame High School takes great pride in its athletics program, which is rich in tradition and known for success. In fact, we’ve won eight state championships in the past six years! For participants, the chance to excel as part of a team is forged through practice, discipline, and sacrifice. Through competition our student athletes learn life lessons that will help them well beyond the playing fields. For students and alumni our teams generate excitement, ignite school spirit, and build a lifetime of loyalty and pride in Notre Dame.

The Notre Dame Green Knights compete in the highly competitive Southern Connecticut Conference. Many Notre Dame graduates have gone on to play in college at the Division I, II, and III levels, and many have earned All-State status on our championship teams. Although the display of championship banners in
our gym is among the most prestigious in Connecticut sports, the credit for Notre Dame’s success is attributed to the hard work and dedication of all our athletes and coaches. We play hard. We are well coached. We display good sportsmanship. We represent the school in a first-class manner. We are proud of our teams’ accomplishments, and are confident that future students who wear the ND uniform will make their own mark on the rich tradition of Notre Dame athletics.
